Father and I waited patiently outside the little church while mother was off searching for good gossip. He's been feeling better for the past few weeks and I'm so happy for it, I couldn't bear the thought of losing him. Anyway he stood tall greeting Mr Lawrence and making little conversations to spare his boredom. Every Sunday is God's day and we come to be forgiven for our sins and to praise him for everything he's given us. Then we have to donate ten per cent of our profit to the church. It seems to me like a running business than a place to come and be comforted by The Lord. All the priests look down at us and sometimes try to spread fear but God is supposed to love all, he knows about forgive and forget but try telling that to a priest. As my father spoke to his friends I was searching for my own. Adam and I have gotten close, I can see him as a trustworthy friend and he's been ever so nice to me. We even tried flirting in public just to see the reactions of the others who always seem to prowl around. Speak of the devil there he was with his father, a tall man who looks so much like him including the dark curly hair but it reaches his shoulders, grey waistcoat and a simple darker grey jacket. He looked almost sinister as he eyed at everyone almost analysing them but I brought my eyes back to Adam who was searching among the crowd of people. Possibly looking for me so I stepped of the church's large stone steps, and strolled through people who one got one glance of me then continued to stare. But I chose to ignore them, since this is happening quite a lot lately.
"Adam," I smiled at him as I stood before him and he smirked back. "You look quite dashing this morning." I complimented then eyed at the collar of his white shirt. He often he takes pride in his appearance... I turned to his father and Adam began to introduce us.
"Father this is her." Adam said him to him but he was smiling at me the entire time. Mr Burkley, that's their last name took my hand and kissed it. And all I can think is 'like father like son'.
"Pleasure to make your acquaintance Miss Allure." His voice is smooth and low, it's almost like he's seducing me and so even if they didn't look alike I'd know they were related anyway.
"Pleasure is all mine and please call Rose." I responded politely starting to blush again.
"Rose excuse me but where about is your father?" Mr Burkley asked me and I pointed him out so then he strolled up the church steps to chat with him. Meanwhile the collar on Adam's shirt is really annoying me.
"Hold on your collar is crooked." I sighed fixing it up as he held his head high allowing me.
"We're not even married yet and already you're dressing me." He kidded and I gave a him small chuckle not really in the mood to come up with a witty remark besides it's what lord Thorne had said to me. He's always making little jokes like these, especially in front of the others. I've kept him as a close friend because I haven't seen Wolfgang in such a long time. Not that I care or miss him or anything but nothing interesting has happened since he finally left without as much as a goodbye. Once fixed I let go and he smiled intently searching for something in my eyes.
"Is there something wrong?" I asked him and his expression turned to confusion.
"Why would you assume something is wrong?"
"It's just the way you're looking at me; it's not the usual look you give me." I smiled and sort of blushed as I leaned closer to whisper. "I often see you undressing me with your eyes." I meant it as a joke but he blushed.
"I... Um... No I don't..." I raised my eyebrows and he finally realised I was joking. So he sighed in relief then glanced sideways to the left. He pulled me closer to him and practically pressed his lips in my ear.
"I move my mouth close to your ear so they think we're plotting something." He whispered and so I glanced sideways to see the other boys watching us then I leaned in my lips to his ear.
"Then I gasp." I whispered then gasped staring at him shocked. "So they believe it." We both giggled and I felt everyone's gaze on us. But we ignored them and I gave him a playful wink. Then I sensed the others walking over to us so I turned them and smiled politely.
"You look lovely today Rose." Malcolm complimented first and I chuckled as Barney, Harry, Jeremy even Manfred is here giving him a little death glare. Then Darwin and Stephan came along and Barney sighed in regret. I haven't spoken to those two in awhile so I was kind of happy to see them. More Darwin than Stephan since I catch him flirting with many girls.
"Hello lovely lady." Stephan flirted reaching for my hand so I whipped it away close to my chest.
"Don't even think about it," I started but continued smiling.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"I know where your mouth has been." I stated seeing him on several occasions kissing ladies hands. Those poor contaminated women I thought. He suddenly leaned in close and smirked deviously but still managed to look like a sex god.
"I know where your mouth has been so don't act all innocent." I blushed and curled my lip in.
"I have no idea what you're implying."
"Liar, I saw it all with my own eyes."
"Rose what is he talking about?" Adam asked me but surprisingly Darwin answered. "Rose kissed someone out in the streets." Darwin said mockingly and I rolled my eyes unable to contain my smile.
"Pardon?" Harry started.
"What no..." Malcolm said unbelievably.
"Rose wouldn't do that." Barney assured his smirking brothers.
"You have brought shame on yourself." Jeremy snapped but I ignored that twat.
"Who exactly did you kiss Rose?" Adam asked me sort of hurt so I assured him, "it was a goodbye kiss on the cheek... For Wolfgang." Everyone stiffened except for Darwin and Stephan who had no clue as to who he was.
"You kissed Wolfgang. You never give me a kiss goodbye." Adam complained and I stared up at him incredulously.
"Because Wolfgang left for good."
"And good riddance." Jeremy stated and the others agreed. I rolled my eyes at them hurt by their words for an unknown reason. I just want to curl up in bed cuddling his shirt, it smells of him... Damn it I do miss him which I am hating myself for it. His scent is comforting, and I'm seeing him in my dreams. But boys are always better in dreams than real life. I shouldn't miss him, I should be mad at him. And I am because he left without a word. He was confusing, infuriating but that's why he stays imprinted in my memory. I hate him for it. The doors swung open and people started moving inside sort of shoving others out of their way so I linked my arm with Adam's and we walked close together side by side. I sensed him look at the others but I couldn't see his face but I knew he was mocking them somehow. But then they followed partly surrounding me like over protective guard dogs.
"Calm yourselves we're at church not at war." I remarked then walked ahead of them to get to my father. What did Mr Burkerly have to say to him? Adam and Malcolm caught up and walked either side of me and I'm beginning to get a bit annoyed.
"Clearly she's a witch." I heard someone whisper but I didn't look in their direction. I didn't need to; from the venomous voice I knew it was Annette. She sends me off to be chased by a witch then she accuses me of being one. I stared up at the roof of the building and my heart skipped a beat when I swear I saw a hooded figure. But in a blink of an eye it disappeared so I assumed it was the trick of the light. We walked in having others nudging and shoving us, Malcolm knocked into me a few times but I think it was on purpose. Meanwhile my arm kept brushing against Adam's, this is unladylike behaviour. Being squashed up against other men... I can just hear my mother thinking that. You know I half expected Lucas, lord Thorne to be here. But I suppose he might go to a much wealthier higher class church if there is one. Everyone was seating themselves down as we walked down the aisle. I've once pictured myself walking down it on future wedding day, I never thought of a groom as such. Just tried to picture myself taking that big step. The church itself is decorated with the story of Jesus Christ and also instructions of what we 'peasants' are meant to do. Suddenly Malcolm gripped my arm tightly that it may have bruised.
"There's a seat here. Rose you can sit with me." He prepared to drag me along with him but Adam then gripped my other arm.
"No Rose sits with me." He then pulled me and they started a tug of war. I'm afraid I might lose my arms if this keeps going on. I have no idea what to do, they shouldn't even be touching my arms unless they are relatives otherwise it's informal. Adam I don't mind, well I sort of don't but this ridiculous. And it hurts.
"Sit with me."
"No with me."
"Oh my..." I bit my tongue and retracted my arms pulling them both in until they smashed heads and groaned in pain. Their grip loosening on me so I slipped between them and rushed to father's side at the second front row on the end. He was chuckling beside me silently staring down at his lap so I elbowed him. "Why didn't you help me?" I whispered at him hoarsely and he looked behind us and I found Adam sitting behind us as well as Stephan, Darwin, Mr Burkley, Mr Lawrence and Barney who remained nervous and staring at me funnily.
"Have you thought about my proposition?" Mr Burkley asked my father and Adam suddenly smiled brightly at his dad then smirked at me. Mr Lawrence leaned forward and glared at Mr Burkley.
"You're proposition? Why Derrick you can't think that his..."
"Gentlemen please we will discuss this at a better time. I'd rather my daughter does not hear about this." My father said and I felt like the lost pup all over again. I wanted to question father but the priest came out in fine white robes with golden symbols embroided onto it, but the man who wore them was very old, very far and completely hairless. He looks like he has three chins and small beady eyes that glared down on us. No wonder it's so easy to be afraid of the church if men like him were running it.
"Scary looking isn't he?" Adam whispered in my ear and I couldn't suppress the shiver that went down my spine. "It's no wonder why priests don't get married." He breathed and I giggled then quickly covered my mouth keeping my posture. As mother, father and a very nosy old woman eyed at me. I just watched ahead as the priest began and as usual he has his back facing us as he spoke in Latin. I just looked up at the ceiling of this timber building and I swear I saw something. Like a black shadow leaping across the wooden podiums holding this building in place. I don't why, but my chest tightened.
~🌹~
After the whole connecting with God act my family and I walked out if the building. I stayed close with my parents avoiding any male attention. Unfortunately Annette has gotten all the women talking, I can hear they're whispers and feel their stares on my back. It's unsettling.
"Head high Rose, no slouching." Mother whispered sternly in my ear and I did so to avoid any more scowls.
"Leave her alone sweetheart." Father said politely and I looked between the two. They have gotten cold towards each other again. Not that there's a real issue, I care not whether they share affection or not. I don't want a repeat if that morning. Mother told me that when you share a bed with a man you get pregnant and stories I've read have not gone far from kissing. They end up in the bedroom but then go straight to the next morning. Not good thoughts to be thinking about on church grounds.
"Father? What did Mr Burkley and Mr Lawrence say to you?" I asked him and his jaw tensed a little as he stared dead ahead.
"Nothing of importance." He responded.
"If it's not important then might as well tell me anyway." I persisted.
"They explained to me that there have been a few marriage proposals." He said and I stopped dead in my tracks.
"By whom and for who?" Mother interjected intrigued by the new gossip she could tell.
"My lips are sealed." He mockingly locked his mouth shut and both mother and I sighed in annoyance.
"Papa!" I pushed and mother scowled at his little smirk. For once mother and I are in agreement, he is a nuisance. Ugh for a split second I thought of mother as a real kind person who could possibly love. Then she held her head high in that snobby way smacking me back to reality.
"Rose!" Someone called out to me and I turned around to search for the voice and I watched as Elena came rushing towards me in a pretty satin blue dress and her hair in a matching bonnet. Who wears something like that to church? "Rose may we talk I wanted to personally..." I interrupted her not wanting to bring that up again, especially in front of my parents. They have been watching a lot closely, like hawks. Well mainly mother has.
"It's alright Elena."
"Uh... But I haven't said..."
"Listen." I grabbed her shoulders and slowly pushed her away from prying ears and further away from the crowd. "What happened has been long forgotten so I bid you farewell."
"Wait, I was hoping we could be friends." She said then looked over at the boys eyeing at Adam. Oh I see what's going on here; she wants to be friends with me now to get closer to them.
"Friends with me? Or friends with them?" I questioned and she hesitated.
"Friends with you... However they're the bonus." She said sarcastically and I rolled eyes but chuckled.
"Have them if you like they're an annoyance."
"But handsome annoyances."
"A few I suppose but Jeremy has a sour tongue. Not mention a sour expression."
"Have you noticed Manfred's wandering eyes?"
"If my breasts were my eyes I'd hate to think where my brain is." I whispered and she gasped and covered her mouth to hold back her fit of giggles.
"Is it true that you kissed a stranger?" She asked abruptly and I sighed.
"On the cheek as a goodbye gift and as a thank you." I assured and her blue eyes widened.
"Really? A thank you for what?"
"My private business I'm afraid. You wouldn't understand."
"Oh... Was he... Your secret lover?" I flushed at that question. I don't why I did. I felt my stomach do a twist and my chest tighten. I can literally hear each beat of my heart in my ears. Thinking of him made me feel a little sick.
"No." I finally spat out. "What would make you say that?"
"That's what Annette is saying. I knew she was causing havoc again." That bloody little trollop. Why can't she leave me alone? What does she want from me? "You know she said that he grabbed your..." She looked left and right in case of keen listeners then leaned forward blushing a little. "Bosom." I burst out laughing then stopped curling my lips in.
"Isn't he a lucky a bastard?" I whispered back and she covered her mouth again.
"What are you two whispering about?" Adam strutted over standing beside us but smiling down at me.
"Why we were discussing on whether Elena should claim you or whether I should have you." I stated then smirked at Elena. "Or there was Elena's suggestion of sharing you." Adam cracked a grin and Elena flushed.
"I like the third option." Adam declared and I rolled my eyes.
"You would wouldn't you." Elena said seductively and I winked at her.
"Do you want to hear the fourth?"
"Love to." He said leaning close into my personal space.
"We thought of chopping you in half." I said humorously and he scrunched his face as Elena perked her brow.
"Don't think I'd appreciate blood on my new dress." She joked and I laughed.
"It's nice." I complimented and she bit her lip. "Brings out your eyes."
"You women and your fashion."
"You men and our bosoms." I remarked and Adam choked on laughter while Elena gasped as her cheeks reddened. It's obvious on her pale skin.
"Rosalie." My father called out so I said my goodbyes to them and retreated back to the cart. "Who's that?"
"Just a friend. Let's head home we've got work to do."
~🌹~
His fingers caressed the brown strands of my hair as he lay on top of me. His eyes admiring my face while my hand goes to cup his cheek. Oh his eyes, where ever they look upon me tingles. I've never seen such eyes... There's a whole secret behind them.
I shook my mind on the faraway fantasy, looking up at the blue sky. Why I yearn for Wolfgang is beyond me. The fierce wolf like expression he has doesn't scare me but interests me. Even though I haven't seen him. Every day I wonder if he would ever think of me. Sometimes I don't mean to think about him, I see visions of us together. Often erotic and sensual but it's not me thinking it. It doesn't make sense but it's what happens, firing desire and ongoing excitement. I don't know where it comes from; it's almost as if I'm watching someone else's thoughts. Peeking into someone else's dreams without meaning to. I sighed staring at the odd shaped clouds floating above. Della my horse came into view, her long face leaning in towards mine and I smiled then gently patted her snout then up along her face.
"Shall we head home?" I asked her and she huffed in my face making me giggle then gag at her horsey breath. "Phew Della what have you been eating?" I joked but she clomped away showing me her large rump. Alright then ignore me... However I do think after a long day of hard work I could spend a few more minutes under the blazing beautiful sun. I am lying on top of the grassy hill that looks down on my home, I'm too afraid to return to that river alone. Thanks to the demon wolf boy.
"Rose!" My father shouted from the bottom of the hill so I sat up flipping my hair away but the wind kept blowing it in my face. I huffed standing grabbing my white ribbon from my pocket and pulled my hair back to tie it up high into a ponytail.
"Father? What's the matter?"
"Your mother wants a word." Even from up here I can see he is giving me curious look and I simply shrugged smiling. Another word... That must mean I've got another package from Lord Thorne. Mother wants me to keep quiet about him around father and I hate keeping secrets from him. But since he's a man I don't even think he's noticing. The packages are usually full of precise expensive gifts. So far it's perfume, the glass slippers and this new scarlet coloured gown that is sleeveless and attached at the back a black bow. Which I decided to try on... Just to see if it fitted... Alright it is the most exquisite dress I've ever really worn that I can breathe in and easily move around in.
"Della." She trotted my way and I jumped up onto her back then she ran down the hill as I held onto her mane. I leaped off my dress almost flying up to my knees so I quickly pulled it down when I landed on my feet. My father crossed his arms over and smiled at me. "What?"
"I don't know how your mother can think you could be become a lady." He teased and I scoffed then stood tall and held my head high as I walked off.
"I could too be a lady." Not that I really want to be one.
"Sure, sure... Who are these packages from? That messenger boy is unsettling."
"How do you mean?"
"He has wondering eyes." I chuckled although I didn't really notice of that boy.
"Mo..."
"Better not call out again. You know how your mother is." Father said resting his arm over my shoulders and I leaned into him and gave him a sideways hug.
We reached the front door of the house and it was wide open with the messenger boy and mother staring at a little wooden chest.
"For you Rosalie." Mother passed me an envelope addressed to me and I gladly accepted it opening it up and immediately recognised Lucas's handwriting.
"There's other news..." The messenger boy began and I forgot the letter and looked at him. "Uh... The whole village is talking about it." He said and father stood next to mother eyeing at the curly freckled brunette.
"They've killed the beast, they're showing him off in the town square." Father said with no keen interest however my chest tightened. But the real beast was driven away by him. Him...
"Wolfgang." I whimper-whispered dropping the unread letter onto the floor. Then I ran past my parents out of the house reacting the same thing in my mind. No, no, no... This can't be... The thought of someone murdering Wolfgang breaks me. This can't be true...
"Rose where are you going?" My father bellowed and my mother screeched. "Rosalie get back here!" However both are just distant murmurs and the world seems to be blurring around me. I whistled loudly and Della ran my way and when she did I leaped up and sat on her back again as she ran down the path. I can hear my heart beating in my ears.
"The village square Della and hurry." I whispered in her large ear and from her determined huff I knew she must have understood my urgency. Especially when she seemed to run at the speed of light. All the while as she ran spinning thoughts were piling up in my head. Wolfgang gone? Dead? That couldn't be possible. He's a wolf man and a warrior. There's no achievable way to hurt him let alone destroy him. Before I knew it Della had frozen to a halt in the village square and I quickly slid off her and stared at the crowding people. All with their backs facing me and I saw a woman scream, her face contorted into disgust. The palms of my hands are sweating and I instinctively clenched my fists as I slipped past people. Trying to get to the middle of what they're surrounding.
"Rose?" Someone called out in question but whoever they were I ignored them. And I gasped when I saw a pool of blood at my feet. I felt my whole body start to tremble... The day is warm but my body is ice cold... I looked up and saw Annette's large pig of a father holding a wolf's hind legs showing off his kill. I slapped my mouth with my hand and glared shockingly at the fat blob that stands before me. Grey hair and wearing hunting gear, his face similar to Annette's but more sour and appalling. I stared at the grey wolf again, then sniffled. Wolfgang's fur is brown and his wolf form is way larger than this wolf.
"I have killed the beast! We are safe!" The fatty bellowed but I stepped forward to try and see the wolf's eyes. I stood really close and kneeled down on one knee to look closely at the head. But the man moved it away from me and glared me down. "Watch it girl! What are you doing leaning in so close like that?" He questioned me loudly and I realised where I was and that now all eyes are on me. But it doesn't matter. Wolfgang it not dead. This is just an ordinary wolf.
"I'm sorry." I said a small smile starting play on my lips. As I backed away standing up.
"It's a little small to be the beast isn't it?" Adam came up beside me suddenly questioning the fat man and I smiled at him. He nodded smiling a little then stepping a little closer to me.
"How dare you question me? I am practically your superior and if I say it's the beast it's the beast." The man spat out and I leaned into Adam's ear.
"Be careful, if he sits on you. You're doomed." I breathed and Adam snickered. Thankfully the fat man hasn't noticed because he's too busy trying to avoid the questions of other suspicious villagers. I shook my head and chuckled for no apparent reason. Other than the thought of my relief... I knew it wasn't possible for him to be gone. "I shall see you later Adam." I said to him ready to head back to Della.
"No wait. Let's take a walk; I haven't really spoken to you in awhile." He quickly said I patted Della's long face. Then I turned to Adam who stood behind me looking at me pleadingly.
"Adam you saw me today at church. In fact you almost tore one of my arms off." I said and he flushed flicking some of his dark hair back.
"Well that wasn't my fault Malcolm is impudent."
"Adam..."
"Do you disagree?" He questioned and I bit my lip then turned back to my horse. Adam made an evil cackle so I rolled my eyes while giggling a little. "Now come along let's walk around." He pushed but I can't. I just ran out on my parents I have to go and explain myself...
"I can't there's so much work I have to do at home."
"Exactly and if you are with me you can avoid it all."
"Adam."
"Rose."
"Don't be difficult."
"I'm not being difficult I just feel lonely... Come on will you please keep me company?" He pleaded and I sighed. He gave me a smug smile thinking that he'd won so I rolled my eyes.
"I can't leave Della here and I don't think I can drag her around town."
"Sure you can."
"Listen today is not the day I have to be back soon or I'll earn a butt whooping from mother." I said sarcastically. "If you want quality time with me then you'll just have to wait until tomorrow night. After all you did invite my family over for dinner."
"Right yes." He said excitedly then held my hands in his. Uh... "I can't wait till then..." He breathed and I curled my lips in. "Come on just for a few minutes. We'll walk around out of town so Della can be left at a field or... yeah." This is time when I used to expect Wolfgang to just randomly intrude appearing completely out of nowhere but... Never again. I turned back to Della holding her large long face in my arms and stared dead straight into her big brown eye.
"What do you think?" I asked her and she huffed turning around and walking off. I chuckled then gazed back at Adam. "Sorry I have to listen to the horse." I simply said innocently but so I don't leave him sulking. I gave him a hug wrapping my arms around his neck and he quickly hugged me back. Then I pulled away giving him a peck on the cheek but cupped his face with my hands. "This is so you don't follow me home moping and whining like a lost pup." I said and then all of a sudden his face darted at my mine and I pushed him back also stepping back. I stared at him wide eyed. "What was that?"
"I tripped a little." He said then shrugged.
"Oh are you ok?" I asked then suddenly Adam was knocked down to the ground. Malcolm had shoved him into the pavement and was boiling with anger.
"You bastard!" Malcolm shouted holding Adam down by his shoulders then lifted his clenched hand ready to cause real chaos. No I am not going to let this happen! I'm not going to just stand around while there's a brawl happening before my eyes. Only this time people walked over to see the action. All the boys and a lot grown adults who did absolutely nothing. I quickly grabbed Malcolm's arm before he punched Adam in the face but he pulled away then badly elbowed me in the gut. I groaned in serious pain and turned around hugging my soon to be bruised belly. I got 'oh's' from people crowding around us and then a few women came to my aid.
"Oh you poor thing."
"Straighten up my girl."
"I'm fine." I breathed but I'm really not that really hurt!
"You idiot you hurt her!" I heard Adam yell behind me.
"Hey it's not my fault if you kept your hands to yourself..."
"Would you make them stop?" I whispered to one of the women who had fair chestnut hair covered in a white bandana and very pretty freckled face. She nodded smiling sympathetically as I bent over again. So the other in a dirty white apron and messy curly brown hair forced me to stand straight again.
"Rose? Oh Rose I am so sorry." Malcolm said as I turned to face the both of them. They're dirtied and yet Adam held a straight face while Malcolm gave me a worried one. "will you ever forgive me?"
"At some point I will... Until then don't talk to me either of you." I snapped venomously which surprised both of them. Adam seemed to want to protest but in the state of mind in at the moment he better not dare. I don't where the sudden anger comes from but it's been happening a lot lately when I'm alone. And now I'm in public ready to vomit and I think I've scared a few people. Then everything went quiet... The people had stop chattering and laughing and were staring at someone. I gasped and then strained a smile, please don't come my way...
