Chapter Thirty One
William was sound asleep beside me and I looked over at the clock, it was just past two. As I tried to move away from him his grip got tighter around my stomach as he clung to me. Spying the long body pillow on the floor besides my bed I tried to reach out but was unable to get it I sighed, not sure how to get up without waking him. I opened my eyes and had to stop the scream that nearly came out as the pillow was above me. Looking behind it, Margaret stood there holding it for me with a small smile on her old face. I took a few deep breaths to calm down and took it from her, shoving it between William and I as his hold shifted from me to the pillow. As soon as I was out of the bed, my skin broke out in goose bumps; the heat from the bed was so intense I had on only a tiny pair of silk shorts and a singlet. Finding my robe I put it on and crept out of my room to where Margaret waited in the hall. She pointed downstairs and I nodded, allowing all my senses to take over as I heard the snores and breaths of those in the house, my steps light and careful.
We ended up in my Grandfathers office. She waved her arms around and muttered something, which had me on edge before she looked at me smiling gently.
"No one will hear us now. Relax" But I couldn't. She pointed at the chair and I shifted it so it faced the sofa she sat down on. Her white hair seemed translucent in the dim light of the room; her face revealed her stress and she seemed smaller than I remembered.
"I haven't been honest with you Beth. I am sorry for all that has happened and all that will. But you need to know a few things" She looked at me to gauge my reaction and I just gave her a simple nod to continue.
"Back in France, your Mum said she was worried about you wanting to go back to London, that it happened near there and if you come back she wasn't sure what is best for you. Do you remember?" Again I just nodded, it had been the second time I had caught her talking to Margaret.
"She lied, she knew you were coming and the whole conversation was staged. When I spoke to you after I sent her to bed I told you your father died in an effort to protect you. You may think it was the old alpha of the pack that did this but while he was a bit on the mad side, he had the utmost respect for your father. He may have been the one to do the deed but it was out of his control. He was weak minded and the grief that consumed him left him open to being influenced." My father's death had never bothered me like it should. Maybe I always knew the circumstances were not true. Margaret had lied to me before, could she be now? She shook her head, I had thought she could read my mind before and this just confirmed it further.
"I told you not to fear me, you are family. While my return to this world allows me some abilities, I am still at the mercy of those who bought me back. It shames me what my family has become, I did not try to keep magic from them for their safety, but for the safety of others they may seek to use it against. Everything in this world has a balance, they would corrupt this. I can not tell you who summoned me, I can not tell you of their plan but you are part of it and you need to be aware" The office door opened and Finn walked in. Margaret did not seem surprised or worried to see him as he sat beside her.
"When William was shot and Margaret saved him, she did more than save his life. She broke the spell he had been placed under and in the wine fed to Penelope there had been a binding spell leaving the witch useless. Once she realized this she sought revenge. She played the part of Lucas's wife and purposefully bore him children. Her mother had not been killed when she was a child as everyone thought. She had been banished to a remote coven. Upon Penelope's death she was able to break free and ensured her grandchildren knew of what they were and kept the magic in the family. When Margaret died, your grandmother gained her power and passed it onto her daughter, to Sarah. Ironically history was repeated and Eileen and Sarah had some deadly enemies. Like Penelope she found herself a 'werewolf mate', your father" My mouth dropped at all he told me. If this was the case how had they been able to get away with it? And I had another grandmother? Mum had always told us she had been adopted and her adoptive parents had died when she was sixteen. But I couldn't comprehend my Mum being this powerful witch. Surely we'd have known something? As if a tag team of information, Margaret spoke up.
"The ones who find out don't live long enough to warm others. Magic is tight around them, they know how to hide themselves. That night when I hid your home from William and the others, it was not to stop them from finding you as Sarah believed. It was to keep them from harm. The fact she has werewolf children makes her believe you will be her protectors after all no child will want harm to come to their mother. Your defiance lately has been troublesome for her, the other night she was testing out your magic power compared to your wolf. If you are weak with magic she can influence you like she did to the old Alpha" Everything I had known, my life so far had been a lie. Did she even love us? Happy memories of my childhood came to mind and I couldn't stop the tears that escaped.
"Children? You told me James wasn't like me" Worry for my brother filled me, he didn't need to be apart of all this. He was innocent.
"I lied. A few weeks before your fathers death she called for me. She had me check you both to see what you possessed. At the time I wasn't aware of what had been going on but I soon worked it out. Your signs were to obvious to hide, but James was not" I believed everything she told me now, Finn being there only added comfort but I wasn't sure if I could handle much more. My world was slowly crumbling around me, as if the werewolf situation wasn't enough to handle, my Mum was some kind of evil witch? I was sobbing now, I had once worried my wolfs influence would drive me mad. She was the least of my worries right now. Finns comforting embrace soon found me and he gently rubbed my back until I managed to pull myself together.
"Do not go with her tomorrow Beth, get James and leave now. I can tell William and we have you somewhere safe before anyone even knows" Finn urged. It made the most sense. I nodded, getting up. He reached out to me and took my arm as I went to walk by him, the touch sending me a vision. My Grandparents house was burning, I sensed they were all inside trapped as something wouldn't allow them to leave the inferno.
"What did you see?" Margaret interrupted my thoughts. I looked at them both worried. What could I say? I felt a jab at my head, like someone poked me and looking at Finn he frowned.
"Why are you blocking me?" he asked, looking at Margaret. Another poke was felt and she soon frowned too. I felt my wolf stir, what ever she was doing wasn't letting them in my mind. Back when Parker left France and Eric and Freddy couldn't find him they mentioned blocking. The wolf wasn't letting them in my mind.
"I don't know what you're talking about? I just saw Mum and I leaving with James tomorrow. We seemed, happy. Maybe your wrong?" I lied. I felt my wolfs presence in my tone and I knew we were on the same page. We didn't want our family, our pack to be hurt because of us. We had to protect them and to take the threat of the witch away would do that. Finn always told me to listen to my wolf, so I was.
"We're not. You're putting yourself at risk" Finn was getting annoyed now and I felt another poke in my head. I ignored it, not letting him know that I did know what was going on.
"I wont be at risk. She is still my Mum and James deserves his family," I snapped back. Finn growled then, I hadn't seen him angry like this before.
"Pack is family! If you go tomorrow I am done helping you. As an Alpha you need to put your pack first and you are just proving how selfish you are!" he glared at me, disappointment clear in his eyes. He looked to Margaret and stormed out.
"Keep the ring on Beth." Margaret spoke up after a few minutes. She gave me a hug and stepped back, still holding onto my shoulders. "He is just mad as you are not letting him protect you. You are already showing signs of being a fine Alpha; William has you for a reason. I will help where I can" and she disappeared leaving me alone. I ended up on the floor, more sobs shaking my body as my mind was breaking down trying to process it all. I sighed heavily, feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders. 'This year is going to be awesome' I thought sarcastically, my wolf urging me to get up. I felt her strength and wished my Dad was still here. What I wouldn't give to see him again, especially knowing what I did now. I eventually headed back upstairs and went to James's room. Climbing into bed with him I found his hand and gently held it. He stirred, surprised to find me but not fully waking up.
"What's wrong Eli?" he mumbled still asleep.
"Just afraid of the monsters tonight Jay" I said softly. He nodded and his grip tightened on my hand.
'Will can keep you safe too Eli, but I don't mind helping" His words hit me with force but in all his innocence he was already sound asleep again. Unable to stop it, I ended up crying myself to sleep, not sure what tomorrow would be bring.
I entered the cottage, the fire blazing strongly, heating up the small room. I sat down my basket on the table in the tiny kitchen and took off my red cloak, laying it over the chair.
'Elizabeth? I'm in my room" the croaky voice of my Grandmother called out. Smiling I walked into her room, the small wooden bed appearing even smaller as her body took up the majority of the space. She looked different too and cautiously I lingered near the end of the bed.
"Why Grandmother, what a different voice you have" I stated curiously.
"It is just a little cold dear" came the reply, a small cough soon breaking out. It didn't sound as terrible as someone with a cold would have so I didn't worry to much about her health. She had a shawl tied around her head yet there were two bulges underneath and I knew they were ears.
"What big ears you have Grandmother" She shifted slightly, pulling the fabric a little looser so the blonde head of hair was revealed and on top her head to large ears appeared.
"It's just so I can hear you better dear" she responded. I walked to the left of the bed, towards the window where the dim glow of the moon filtered through. Seeing the large golden eyes catching the light I gulped nervously. Something wasn't right.
"But Grandmother, what big eyes you have....." Before I could finish she was quick to respond.
"Only so I can you see you better my Elizabeth" Inching closer to the bed her muzzle was open, large white teeth seemed to sparkle in the moonlight.
"What big teeth you have" I wondered, staring at the canines as saliva dripped from them.
"All the better to eat you with!" she snapped, the gold and white wolf leapt from the bed, those sharp teeth sinking into my neck as I felt the beat of my heart begin to slow to nothing and I was unable to move, to fight. The hold was finally released and as the final seconds of life counted down, I looked up one final time from where I had been left on the floor and my mouth dropped open in shock as it was no longer the gold wolf standing there, but Parker.
