Chapter Thirteen

Later on that day I sat in the usual cafe with Derrick and Andrea. The cuteness of their togetherness was starting to disappear, as they seemed to be arguing more lately. Wanting to break the tension that now sat with us as they silenced I let out what was on my mind.

"Do you believe in werewolves?" I asked curiously sipping the latte. Derrick looked at me for a moment before laughing. Andrea looked at him almost hurt before answering.

"Oui. There are many legends and the stories would have to come from somewhere non?" I nodded agreeing, I hadn't actually thought of it like that.

"Like your do not wear red in the woods story?" Derrick teased. Andrea glared at him and I regretted bringing it up now. I didn't want to be behind fight number three of the day.

"Was there not a wolf that came after the girl in the red coat at the bonfire?" She mumbled something in French soon after, obviously annoyed.

"Pure coincidence. These days if something like that existed, we would know with all the technology available. Maybe there is an American werewolf running around Paris?" he laughed at his own joke but neither of us seemed amused.

"Why do you ask?" Andrea ignored Derrick and now we started our own conversation.

"No reason, just thinking" Andrea looked at me oddly; as if she stared at me long enough the truth would come out. Finally giving up we started talking about Christmas which was only weeks away. It made me homesick and I missed my grandparents. They were the last reminder of my Dad and living with them had left us closer than ever before. We had been here for four months and while we had the odd phone call and email, it wasn't the same. They always put up the most amazing Christmas decorations and possibly not seeing that this year hurt.

Somehow in the period of five minutes the anger between them changed, and leaving the once again happy and pro PDA couple I decided to grab a few things for dinner when I spied Eric with Freddy. For once they didn't actually seem to be my personal stalkers and I snuck up on them with ease.

"Freddy!!" I squealed, launching myself at him in a less lady like fashion than I would have liked. Shock and horror was all over his face as Eric laughed at his brother's helplessness.

"What are you guys up to?" I asked, finally letting him go. I felt a little offended he seemed to treat me like I had three heads or something.

"Just checking on something," Eric said, his voice a little to high pitched for my liking.

"Something or someone?" The pair looked at each other doubtfully with my question. "Someone" I said curiously, tapping my finger against my chin as though deep in thought. "Not me obviously otherwise you wouldn't have been so easy to sneak up on" Eric nodded as Freddy punched his arm. He was going to be a hard one to crack. I'd ask Eric about it later. "Who?" I demanded, staring hard at them. Eric gulped and Freddy looked away.

"No one" they both mumbled.

"I think you should tell me" I said a little harsher than I intended. Eric sighed and Freddy rolled his eyes, I smiled at looked at Eric, he was going to tell me.

"Its Parker. We've been trying to keep track of him since last night" Eric confessed. I kind of knew the answer but needed to hear it.

"And you've lost him?" Eric nodded guiltily while Freddy dropped his head to stare at the ground.

"He has moved out. All of his stuff is gone and he is blocking us. We can't find a scent and cause he is blocking us we can't tell if he is nearby" Eric seemed relieved to tell someone; I just wish it hadn't been me now. Parker missing scared me. As I realized that something fought inside, 'my wolf' not liking the fact I was scared.

"Blocking? What is that?" The new term had me interested. Maybe I should start taking notes on all these werewolf things.

"In a pack, you can communicate telepathically with one another and sense when one of your pack is nearby. It helps if there is trouble or an attack or in the old days when we were a bit more territorial to identify rogues and intruders" Eric explained. I had to admit, that is kind of cool.

"Can I do that?" I asked out loud. Both of them looked at me curiously and I realized since Margaret had told me about my 21st birthday present I hadn't told anyone else. Not even William. Did they know about me? Could they sense it?

"No, you're human" Freddy stated as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

"Yeah but I'm..." Eric put his hand over my mouth, and Freddy looked at him in horror. As in touching me could pass on whatever disease he thinks I have.

"....super annoying. We know" He joked; Freddy looked between us and then tilted his head as if to sniff me.

"Eric, are you keeping something from me? Marcus said to watch the girl and I guessed Parker had something to do with it. What do you know?" he demanded, his anger obvious. Eric looked guilty and I decided if I ever had to rely on these two in a lie detection test, we would fail. Maybe we should organize a game of poker; the pair of them were easier to read than a book. But I soon realized Fred didn't know what Eric did and the pair seemed locked in another silent argument.

"Marcus had you watch me?" I asked; I had always presumed it had been William. I thought back to the ball when I had seen Marcus. He looked like he had seen a ghost. Penelope's face appeared in my mind and I knew that's why. He had watched her with William when he died, not leaving like the others. He knew about that night if not more than William or me. I had to see Marcus. Where this urge came from I wasn't sure, Eric could probably fill me in on just as much but something told me to see Marcus.

"Take me to him" It was more of a statement than a question and neither moved. "Now" I commanded and amazingly the hesitantly nodded and started walking. Not sure what would await me, I followed close behind.

Everyone was silent as we headed out of the villages main entrance. "So, are you guys related?" they both looked over their shoulders at me confused, knowing I knew they were. "It's just well, Freddy, you're nothing like Eric. Is it good twin bad twin?" Eric laughed and shut up as his brother glared at him.

"We are not twins. Eric is ten years younger than I" That surprised me.

"But you're like the same, practically. Eric does have blonder hair and knows how to smile and have a laugh," I teased. Freddy rolled his eyes and looked at Eric as if to say 'you deal with her'. Maybe he did say it telepathically.

"We don't age like humans. We reach 21 and then that's it for a few hundred years or so" he said casually, like it was no big deal.

"Huh" I mumbled, instantly wondering how old William was. "What happens after a few hundred years or so?"

Eric shrugged, "We might get a grey hair here and there. If you know a witch they can give you a potion to make you age as a human. People with human mates do this"

Freddy finally laughed, "A witch? There are no witches these days. You and your imagination Eric" he mocked. I raised an eyebrow at him. Parker seemed to know about witches, coming across Margaret hadn't surprised or shocked him. Even if she was dead.

"I think you're wrong" I challenged.

Freddy stopped, turning to look at me and when I finally thought I had managed to get him talking, he pointed behind him. "We're here" I looked at the small cottage. Not what I was expecting. Why aren't they at the castle with William?

"Beth, just quickly. What ever happens in there, I will keep you safe," Eric had his hands on my shoulders and I felt the seriousness of his words. Deep inside I knew he had placed his loyalties to me, why I did not know but I had a suspicion it was also the reason why he always seemed to do as I asked. One thing was for sure though, I trusted him. Nodding he walked just in front of me as if already acting as a shield while Freddy knocked on the door. It soon opened, a man similar to Marcus appearing. He glared at the two before his eyes fell on me, his jaw dropping slightly. 'My wolf' started pacing, not liking how he was looking at me. His brown eyes seemed to lack any life, yet the snarl of a smile that appeared made me wonder if he was in someway thinking of a way to kill me. Scars were visible on his neck and across his left eye, his whole demeanor was threatening. I had no doubt if I was like them I would have growled or ran away with my tail between my legs. Instead I spoke up.

"Is Marcus here?" My words got his attention from where ever his mind had gone, as from inside I heard the scraping of a chair against tiles and someone walking over. The man moved back freeing the entrance.

"He is" Marcus purred entering the doorway, a smug look on his face. "Won't you come in?" He moved his arm motioning for me to enter. I was about to take a step when Eric swiftly went in first, his eyes trained on the other man the whole time, clearly trusting him as much as I did. Eric put his hand out for me to take and sensing his nerves my own started to grow. Doing as he wanted my hand went to his and his fingers curled around it tight, pulling me inside as Freddy followed close behind, also watchful of the other man. There was silence until the slight bang as Marcus closed the door.
