Aftermath: Part 2
Lan Xichen's eyes widened. He had seen a lot of things during his years as a doctor, but the blood splattered wall and the body at its base was a first.
He jerked his attention away, looking for his brother.
"Di-di?" He felt on edge. Afraid the wall might only be the beginning.
"Here, Ge-ge!" Lan Zhan called his brother.
Lan Xichen turned toward the corner to find the two boys curled against Wei Wuxian's right side. Both of them looked exhausted and scared.
Wei Wuxian's shirt was pulled up, and Lan Zhan was putting pressure on his left side.
"Several stitches got pulled out. He's okay. Yu Bin's in the bathroom with Huaisang. The hand looks bad, Ge-ge."
WeiYing nodded his agreement.
"Go take care of Yu Bin. He saved us." He pulled the boys a little closer. "We need to get them out of here soon, please. Conference room, patient room - I don't care. Just away from that." He nodded his head to the blood-stained corner.
"Agreed. I will see what we can do as soon as possible but first , show me your arm, Di-di."
Lan Zhan stood so his brother could quickly examine his bicep.
"The bleeding has almost stopped. It's fairly shallow. A few stitches should do the trick. When we get everyone moved, we'll get Yu Qing to stitch you both up. Don't use it if you can help it."
Lan Zhan nodded and moved so Lan Xichen could peer at Wei Ying's ripped stitches.
"You only ripped out four of the stitches. We'll put them back in and get it cleaned up. Any other pain?" he asked as his gloved hands pressed gently around the incision site.
"Most of me is sore from hitting the floor, but that's okay." Wei Ying jerked slightly at one point. "That one hurt."
"We'll keep an eye on it. Did you hear what I told Lan Zhan?"
"Yes. Thank you for getting us a new room." Wei Ying bowed his head in appreciation.
"A'Yuan? Sizhui? Are you okay?" the doctor asked.
A nod and a sniffle from A'Yuan.
A nod and a shrug from Sizhui.
"Hang on. We'll get you out of here as soon as we can." he said peeling off his gloves then patting both of them on the head.
Lan Xichen turned and entered the bathroom. Yu Bin was seated on the floor with both Nie brothers in front of him.
Huaisang was holding Yu Bin and softly speaking to him. Whispers of how brave he was. How grateful he was to have Yu Bin. That he would be by his side. Together, they would get through all this.
Yu Bin's face was buried in Nie Huaisang's shoulder. Occasionally, a choked sob or a little nod were the only indications he was listening.
Nie Mingjue looked up at Lan Xichen with relief. He didn't say anything. He just moved the towel he had held on the infected left hand.
Dr. Lan was appalled. There was only one solution.
"Yu Bin?" His voice was soothing.
Yu Bin looked up with teary eyes.
"Hurts." He whispered and looked back at his hand.
"I want to take you in for surgery. I'll do it myself. We need to clean the infection out. Flush the whole area before I re-stitch it. In the surgery, it won't hurt so bad. Do you understand?" Lan Xichen asked quietly.
"Yes. Can you tell JieJie? Don't let her see that, please." His voice was the same soft whisper as he nodded his head toward the room. It was like he was afraid to talk any louder.
Yu Bin looked back at Huaisang.
"You'll come with me, A'Sang?"
Huaisang smiled gently and wiped the tears from Yu Bin's face.
"There is no where else for me to be but by your side, baobei. I'll walk down with you and wait for you. I'll be right there when you come out." Huaisang kissed A'Bin's forehead before wiping his own eyes.
"If A'Sang will go with me, I can do it." Yu Bin looked at Xichen again before laying his head back on Huaisang's shoulder.
A quick look at the right forearm and Xichen nodded to himself.
"Mingjue? Keep the towel over the ripped stitches but no pressure. We want it to drain. Huaisang? Can you keep pressure on his forearm?"
Huaisang nodded. "Yes."
"I need to make some calls. Get the emergency surgery staff to prep the operating room. We need a new place for everyone to be and I need to tell Yu Qing." He looked at the three men. "I'll be as fast as possible."
The call to his surgery staff took moments. A call to Steve Chen to find a new room for his patients immediately wasn't much longer.
He called Yu Qing next.
-----
Dr. Yu Qing got off the elevator with a purpose. Before anyone could say anything, she was headed down the hallway with determined speed. The police officer was so startled that it took him a moment to catch up.
A quick burst of speed, and he was ahead of her to give the code knock.
Yu Qing entered the room as if she were entering a fight. The officers inside were surprised, to say the least.
Marching forward, she looked at Wen Chao with narrowed eyes before giving him a resounding slap.
"THAT is for attacking my baby brother." she snarled before turning to treat Wen Chao's leg with professionalism.
The cops had no idea what to think of this little woman who had invaded the room.
"Ma'am, you can't slap the prisoner." one officer said somewhat hesitantly.
"I already did, officer, rendering it a moot point." she said without looking up from the leg she was examining.
Peng Zhan was all smiles.
"I like her." he wheezed.
Wen Chao's mouth was working soundlessly in absolute fury. Stunned that anyone could slap him and apparently get away with it.
He roared "You fucking cu-!"
Wen Chao didn't get to finish the word.
Quick as lightning, her hand was in and out of her pocket. With the surety of years of practice, she stabbed the needle downward into the crook of Wen Chao's neck.
He froze as his face purpled, and his eyes bulged.
"He is fine despite what he thinks. Acupuncture. A very helpful technique when dealing with uncooperative patients." she explained drily.
She decided the officers didn't need to know that particular point was a nerve cluster, making it both very efficient and extremely painful.**
Yu Qing looked at Wen Chao smugly for a moment before turning back to his leg.
"His femoral artery was missed, unfortunately, but it does mean I can fix it here." she mentioned in a clinical tone.
Peng Zhan broke into a gaspy laugh punctuated with painful grunts.
"If I wasn't already married, ma'am, I'd ask you out!" he huffed out.
The right corner of her mouth curled up slightly.
"Be quiet, Officer. Talking is aggravating your ribs." she answered in the most cordial tone she'd used since she entered the room.
"You!" she glanced up at the officer closest to her. "Put on these gloves. The Gods only know what diseases he has. Then I want you to put pressure here."
As soon as the gloves were on, she placed his hand so the heel was where she needed it. She loosened the tourniquet.
"I need you to press hard so I can pull the knife and clean it as fast as possible before stitching. This will be painful for Wen Chao, but we don't have many options since we don't know -" she yanked the knife out and smiled at Wen Chao's strangled groan before continuing. "- how many assassins are in the hospital. I'm sure he has pissed off a large variety of people who would love to be in on the kill, so to speak."
While she was talking, her hands were moving smoothly through the process of cleaning the wound.
"Now comes the fun part." she said with a small, rather sadistic grin. "Well, for me anyway."
Wen Chao had blood vessels standing out on his forehead as sweat began to pour off him.
Six stitches later...
"I want you to slowly release the pressure. We'll know if the stitches are solid if there's no leaking or spurting."
Wen Chao's eyes bulged a bit further.
The officer slowly pulled back.
No leaking. No spurting.
Yu Qing nodded and released the tourniquet fully.
The rush of blood hurt, which surprised Wen Chao. From the look on her face, it didn't surprise Yu Qing in the slightest.
She diligently bandaged the stitches.
She carefully removed her gloves and nodded in approval when the officer copied her motions.
With a new set of gloves, she moved to Peng Zhan.
"Open your mouth for me, please." A quick look but no blood. "This is going to be miserable, but I need you to cough for me."
Peng Zhan nodded, braced himself, and coughed.
He grunted in pain.
"Sorry. Making sure you haven't punctured a lung. If you feel pressure in your chest or feel like you can't breathe, tell someone immediately. Taste any blood?"she asked as she carefully felt his ribs.
"No blood." Peng Zhan said quietly.
He was trying not to groan. Broken ribs were damn painful.
"I'm sorry." she apologized. "I think you have at least two broken ribs, but what I'm most worried about is your sternum. If it's broken, depending on the break, it could require surgery. I want you to get x-rays. I'll go get a wheelchair and you, me and one of these officers will head down to get those. If I'm with you, we should be able to glide in and out. No wait time."
Peng Zhan just nodded.
She patted his hand. "Considering you were shot this close, I seriously expected far more damage. You are lucky. Tomorrow you won't feel like it, but you are."
Her phone went off in her pocket. It was Lan Xichen.
"How bad is it?" she asked as soon as she answered. She moved to the corner of the room away from Wen Chao and the officers.
He was professional in his explanation and his prognosis knowing it would give her a chance to process what was going on.
"You'll be careful with him, Xichen?" Her voice shook slightly before she cleared her throat.
"You've got my word on it."
"Thank you." she answered softly. "I owe you."
"No, you don't. You would do the same for my brother. We'll be in OR 4. When you're done with Wen Chao and the officer, I want you to call Huaisang. He'll be able to tell you where everyone is. We're moving them. You are not to come here. Do you understand?" His voice was firm on the last sentence.
"Understood."
"Bring stitch kits with you. Di-di needs a few stitches as does Wei Wuxian."
"I need to get the officer into x-ray then I'll go wherever they are." her voice was stable again as she answered.
She put the phone back in her pocket then turned to glare at Wen Chao.
If looks could kill, there would have only been scorch marks left on the bedding.
A few steps toward the bed and she punched Wen Chao in the face. She shook her hand as she watched his nose begin to bleed with satisfaction.
"You ever even look at my little brother again, you'll regret it." she hissed.
The officers collectively had gone slack jawed except for Peng Zhan who was laughing again in wheezes punctuated by little cries of "Ow!".
"I will remove the needle now. If you say one word, I'll put two needles there and leave you that way. I'm sure the officers wouldn't mind a break from you." She stared him in the eye. She wasn't afraid of him.
Wen Chao found that unnerving. Anyone who could cause this much pain and didn't give a shit that he was the Wen Chao was a force to be reckoned with.
She reached across and pulled the needle out.
Wen Chao gasped then slumped in relief.
Opening his mouth, he looked up at her and realized she already had two needles in her hand.
He closed his mouth and refused to look at her again.
"I thought so." Her voice was full of contempt. "Give him some tissues before he makes a mess of the linens.
"Officer, I'll get you a wheelchair."
With one more withering look for Wen Chao, she left the room.
