Chapter 2: Maven

I meet the love of my life for the second time

Here's the second chapter. I hope this follows the story today. And I bet all Maven/Mavey lovers are going either to kill me or jump for joy. Oh, well, here it is! 😈

I leave mother's class a little worse for wear. That girl she attacked, she reminds me of Thomas. Thomas, who was tortured by my brother. Thomas, who was in such despair that he killed himself. I let it happen. I WATCHED it happen.

I remember it like yesterday, his short brown hair blowing in the wind. He stands at the top of a tower. And all I can do is watch him fall all the way down, down until he hits pavement and his body shatters.

Mother hated Thomas, just like she hates Cal. Although, I won't deny my hatred for Cal either. He made me lose my Thomas. And that is something I will never forgive.

Mother watches me go, watching the other girl run out as well. I check my schedule, library, Geography, taught by Mr. Jacos. I growl under my breath. Who in the right mind made him my teacher? I loath him. And he loathes me. I arrive early, glaring at Mr. Jacos as I walk in. Cal is already there sitting down in a seat in front of Evangeline Samos. He waves at me.

"Mavey!" I cringe at the nickname. The Samos twins don't contain their laughter as I walk towards the seats. There are three empty seats. One next to Cal, one in between the Samos siblings, or one behind Ptolemus. Hard choice, but I think I'll take the one behind Ptolemus. A blonde Stilts girl barges in looking incredibly disgruntled. She looks at the two remaining seats. She groans and sits between the Samos siblings. They stare at her with murder on their minds. Just as the bell rings the girl mother slapped runs in and sits between me and Cal. I see her curly brown hair cascading down her back, and her ponytail holder on the ground. I'm surprised to see gray ends at the bottom of her hair. The teacher taps his desk with a ruler to gain attention.

"Good morning class. My name is Mr. Jacos and I will be your geography teacher. Today we will be identifying different places on the map." The man says this cheerfully but does not smile. The brown haired girl reaches her hand in the air. Her warm skin looks sallow in the harsh school lighting.

"Excuse me, Mr. Jacos, but I can't read maps." At this point Evangeline and Ptolemus, who were jabbing the blonde haired girl with sisscors that they somehow have in their bags, start laughing at the girl. She flushes red, but stares straight on, daring the teacher to do the same. Jacos does not frown, but smiles. He seems excited. Why?

"Well then Miss?....." he asks, looking for her name on the attendance sheet.

"Barrow," she says. She sends a dirty look toward Evangeline.

"Then study the map and see what you see geographically. Surely you know what the world looks like?" She shrugs, not caring. "Maybe?" The Barrow girl rolls her eyes.

"Yes." The teacher nods in satisfaction.

"Good. Now, everyone I have selected partners you get to be with the rest of the year. Ptolemus Samos, you will be working with Diana Farley." The blonde looks like she wants to tear his eyes out and I suspect Ptolemus feels the same way. Obvious to the clear dislike between the two he continues. "Tiberias Calore will be paired with Evangeline Samos, and Maven Calore will be with Mare Barrow." Cal looks like he'd rather throw up. Ah, yes I forgot mother and father arranged that he and Evangeline are going to get married after college. Pity he has to marry her. Glad I get to pick who I want.

The girl from Stilts, Mare, taps me on the shoulder, standing on her toes in a desperate attempt to reach my height even remotely. This close of a loom takes my breath away. She is beautiful. Her eyes. I could look into those eyes forever. Oh shoot. I already came out as gay to mother. She was not pleased. Now I have to come out as bisexual?!

"Ahem. I said we have to go do some research on a continent. Which do you want?" She glared up at me, the sass clearly visible with her words. God, she is gorgeous. I clear my throat, putting on my mask. I pick and choose which to wear like picking clothes. I decide to wear the high and mighty mask of a rich boy. I look down my nose at her and state my answer haughtily.

"Europe." She rolls her eyes again and diligently looks for Europe. Despite her struggles to find Europe, she just can't find it. It's not hard for me and so I bend down and gently guide her hand to it. She takes her other hand and slaps mine.

"Get off me sliver!" The shout turns the rest of the class toward us. But all they see is me clutching my hand and her glaring up at me. Bored, everyone turns back to their work. Diana and Ptolemus continue to argue over what continent to pick. Each waves their arms wildly and shouts so loudly I can barely tell one from the other. Evangeline and Cal look halfway done with their project already. I glare back at the girl glaring at me.

"I was helping you."

"I don't want your help," she snaps. I sigh and just sit down on the floor.

"Can we please just finish the project?" She nods and turns to the map. She goes to where I attempted to show her before. We write down all sorts of facts about Europe and we finish just before class ends. She looks so beautiful angry at me. Probably why I tried to infuriate her. As the bell rings she quickly leaves. I walk out behind her, but unfortunately for me my mothers there. She can't read minds, but studying human behaviors and the mind means she practically can. She glares at me, her immaculate posture and slicked back ash blonde hair somehow making her more terrifying.

"Maven. You have a crush on that little Stilts girl don't you?" Unable to lie I simply nod my head. She comes closer to me, forcing me towards the wall. "What have I said about chasing down Stilts brats? It never ends well." She remains cold and threatening, yet almost soothing. "So be a good boy, and stay away from those filthy rats. Understood?" Inwardly I disagree. I say no. And I cower while I do it. That is not what I do though. I must obey her. I straighten up. I look in her eye, and respond the way I have been taught to. And how I must if I want to survive.

"Yes, of course, mother."
