Horseshoe Overlook
A few weeks had passed and everyone had quickly settled into the new camp in Horseshoe Overlook. The men would go out to find out jobs to aquire some money while the women would help out with chores in camp.
Although, (y/n) was going a bit stir crazy at the camp as Grimshaw was becoming unbearable. She always went around and ordered the women to do some chores around the camp and even though (y/n) didn't mind to do the chores, it was annoying to hear Grimshaw bark orders at them.
At least she went easy on Abigail and (y/n) as they had kids but to Karen, Mary-Beth and Tilly, she was a terror to them. But all the women agreed that they were annoyed that Molly O'Shea wasn't lifting a damn finger. Part of it, (y/n) figured, was because Dutch was being sweet on her but the other part was that Molly was from a rich family and she had this high and mighty attitude around her. So she thought herself above all of that.
Sadie Adler was another woman Grimshaw went easy on, due to the trauma she just went through. (Y/n) felt sympathy for her as she knows how it feels to have everything taken from you from the O'Driscoll's. She wanted to talk to Sadie but she wanted to give Sadie a bit of space until she decided when would be the right time.
(Y/n) and Arthur hadn't really gotten to talk much as Arthur was always out and doing some sort've jobs. At first this bothered (y/n) not getting to talk to Arthur cause she wanted to talk about this thing between them. She just wanted to make sure this wasn't something she was imagining as she didn't want to be heartbroken again.
But the good thing was that (y/n) did keep herself busy. Not only was she doing chores around the camp and taking care of Annebeth, she also did some drawings of whatever she saw. Drawing was something that always calmed her and kept her mind busy and focused.
After walking through the camp and thinking over the last few weeks, (Y/n) went and grabbed a bowl of stew for her and Annebeth when she noticed Sadie sitting far off by herself. (Y/n) frowns towards her as she sees Sadie sitting on a boulder, looking down at her hands. (Y/n) hands one of the bowl of stew to Annebeth before she walks over to Sadie.
"Hey, Mrs Adler." She greets the blonde woman after she walks up to her. Sadie looks up at her and (y/n) could see her eyes were red and puffy. "Is it okay if I sit here?" She asked Sadie, who nods slightly. (Y/n) slowly sits on the empty spot as Sadie looks back at the ground.
"You want some food?" (Y/n) asked her as she holds out her bowl but Sadie shakes her head. (Y/n) takes a few spoonful of the stew before she sets the bowl down then turns to Sadie. "I just want to say that I'm very sorry for your loss, Mrs Adler. I-I know what it is like to lose people you love to the O'Driscoll's." (Y/n) said and Sadie turns her head to her. "I lost my parents to them. I know it's not the same as losing a husband but...I know how you feel." She said and Sadie sniffles and nods.
"I just miss him so much." She cries. "Course you do...it goes without saying." (Y/n) said, softly. "What am I gonna do?" Sadie asked, tearfully, before she starts to cry harder. "You're gonna suffer. And life's gonna go on...that's the truth of it, I won't lie to ya." (Y/n) said as she places a hand on Sadie's shoulder.
"Oh, Miss (l/n)..." she cried. "I know." (Y/n) said, softly, as she rubs her back, comforting. "Where am I gonna go?" asked Sadie. "Stay here with us...Folk...they ain't so bad. It's nasty out there on your own." (Y/n) tells her. "I know." She said. "You'll be safe here. At least for now...til you're back on your feet properly." (Y/n) said and Sadie looks over at her. "Thank you." Sadie said, appreciatively. "Of course." (Y/n) said as she pats Sadie's shoulder, comforting.
"I'll give you some time. But like I said, you can stay here as long as you like." (Y/n) said and she stands up. Sadie nods then (y/n) walks away as Sadie buries her head in her hands. "Is she okay, Momma?" Annebeth asked her as she points at Sadie once (y/n) walks up to her. "Well, it's complicated, sweetheart. She lost someone very dear to her, so it's gonna take some time for her to be okay." (Y/n) said and Annebeth gives a bit of confused look before she nods.
(Y/n) chuckles before she kisses the top of her head. "Now...I'm gonna go into town and see if I can find a job or something. You stay around Jack and Abigail and be good, okay?" (Y/n) said and Annebeth nods. "I'm always good." Annebeth said, smiling, and (y/n) chuckles before she hugs her. Then she goes to her horse, mounts it and heads out.
After approaching Valentine, (y/n) dismounts from her horse and hitched it on the post near the general store when she heard loud yelling. She looks towards the saloon and then saw someone getting flung out of the saloon through the window.
"Shit." She mutters then she recognized the man that was thrown out, it was Arthur. A bigger guy then walks out of the saloon and shouts. "Come on, pretty boy…" while everyone started to come out on the street. "Pretty boy? You're kidding me? Pretty boy?" Arthur said, offended, then he and the bigger man started fighting, the rain pouring down on them.
(Y/n) walked, fast, toward the crowd just as the bigger guy seemed to have the upper hand on Arthur and had him on the ground in the mud. (Y/n) ran into the crowd, shoved the patrons then got to the bigger man and grabbed his arm. "Stop! Stop! Please!" She said and the man yanks his arm out of her grasp then backhands her, knocking her into the mud.
"Stay out of this woman!" The bigger man yelled just as Charles, Javier and Bill noticed her in the crowd. "Shit! That's (y/n)!" Javier exclaimed. "Son of a bitch." Bill growled as the three men run over to her.
Hearing the boys say her name, Arthur looked over and saw her on the ground as she slowly sits up and holds her face where the man hit her. Anger coursed through his veins, so Arthur got up and started to beat the shit out of the man. Javier and Charles helped (y/n) up to her feet as Arthur had the man pinned down and started to punch him, repeatedly.
"Hey, come on. Stop that. Stop! Stop! Please!" a thinner small man pleaded as he ran into the crowd and towards Arthur, who stops punching and glares at the intruder. "Please, I beg you. You won the fight already, surely that's enough?" The man said.
"He hit a lady. And what business is it of yours?" Arthur asked him, angrily. "No business. No business, sir. And I know he hit her...but, please…" the man pleads and Arthur scoffs then walks away and towards (y/n), who was back on her feet. "You alright?" He asked her, worried. "I'm fine. He just hit me with the back of his hand. Glad it wasn't his fist." (Y/n) said while Arthur places his thumb and pointer finger on her chin and looks her over.
"Making new friends again I see, Arthur." An exaggerated British voice called out. They turn and see Dutch walking up to them with a man that was dressed, impeccably. "Look who we found sniffing about." Dutch said as the man bows. "Josiah Trelawny." Arthur said. "The very same." Dutch said.
"Well, well…I thought you'd gone to New York." (Y/n) said as she folds her arms across her chest. "And miss all this glamour? You must be joking, Miss (L/n)." Trelawny said and (y/n) chuckles a bit. "How are you?" Arthur asked him. "Well. Quite well indeed. I went to Blackwater looking for you gentlemen. You're not very popular there it seems." Trelawny said then he noticed Javier, Charles and Bill.
"Ah Javier and Charles. I've missed you…and Bill looking as well as can be. Gentlemen, always a pleasure." he said to them. "You're right, we ain't too popular in Blackwater." Dutch said. "We left a lot of money there." Arthur said. "And young Sean it seems." Trelawny added and Dutch turns to him, shocked.
"You've found him?" He asked. "Yes, I have. He's being held by some bounty hunters…trying to see how much money the government will pay them. I know he's in Blackwater…but there's talk of them moving." Trelawny said. "Well, if we step foot in Blackwater…well, then we're dead men for sure." Arthur said.
"There'll be Pinkertons all over the place, but…if he's alive we gotta try." Dutch tells him. "Yeah, of course." Arthur said, nodding. "It's you they want, Dutch." Trelawny said. "Always is." Dutch said then he turns to the boys. "Charles, go find out what you can, carefully. Josiah, take Javier." He said then he turns to Arthur and (y/n). "You two, go get yourselves cleaned up. Join them when you're ready." Dutch said.
"Well, what about me?" Bill asked. "Well exactly, what about you?" Dutch asked, angrily. "W-What does that mean?" Bill asked, confused. "Ah, Bill. Come on." Dutch said as Arthur and (y/n) walk over to the trough, filled with water, and wash their faces.
After cleaning their faces, Arthur turns to her and could see the new red mark on (y/n)'s face. He sighs, heavily, at this and said. "I should go back and beat that guy again." (Y/n) chuckles before she looks up at him. "I think he's suffered enough." She said, smiling, as she nods over the spot the man occupied earlier.
Arthur scoffs and he walks over to his horse. "You gonna go to Blackwater?" She asked him. "Yeah, might as well." He said. "Want me to come with you?" (Y/n) asked him and he looks over at her with a judgmental look and she rolls her eyes. "Don't give me that look. I need to get away from the camp a bit." She said and Arthur sighs then looks at her and he couldn't bring himself to say no to her.
"Fine. C'mon." He said and (y/n) smiles then mounts her horse. "Besides, someone has to keep you boys in line." She teases and Arthur chuckles before they take off and head to Blackwater.
After arriving Blackwater, and not getting spotted by the law, they make their way to a hill and see Javier and Charles hiding in bushes. "How many?" Javier asked Charles as Arthur and (y/n) dismount their horses. "A lot. Uniforms everywhere." Charles replied as he looks through his binoculars.
"You see Sean?" Javier asked him. "No, I don't think so." Charles said. "Damn it. Where's Trelawny?" Javier asked. "Who knows?" Charles said as Arthur and (y/n) come up to them and kneel down to them.
"Hey." they greeted. "Hey." Charles greets back. "Where is that little Irish bastard?" Arthur asked them. "I'm not quite sure. Trelawny's off trying to find out." Charles said. "Has anyone been into Blackwater to see how things lie?" (Y/n) asked them. "Place is crawling with Pinkertons…bounty hunters…pictures of Dutch and Hosea." Javier said.
"We got a lot of money sitting in that town." Arthur grumbles. "And that's where it's gonna remain, for now." Javier said as Arthur pulls out his binoculars and looks through them. "Why haven't they hanged Sean, I wonder?" Arthur asked. "I think he's bait…or they want to trial him publicly." Charles said just as Trelawny approaches.
"Gentlemen and lady. Sean is being moved up the Upper Montana…then to a federal prison out west." Trelawny informs them. "Well, we can't be rescuing people from some federal prison." (Y/n) said. "She's right. We either rescue him now or…cut him loose." Arthur adds. "We're not cutting anyone loose." Charles said, firmly. "Of course not." Arthur assures.
"Ike Skelding's boys are moving him to a camp nearby…before handing him over to the government." Trelawny said. "So, I guess…we need to stop them before they get to camp. Charle, why don't you head up on the north side…and then we'll head up on the other side of the valley and meet you...that way we have them either direction. (Y/n), Javier, Josiah, come on. Let's go see." Arthur ordered and Charles gets on his horse and heads off.
"You know, Arthur…the government or people whom the government like, seem to be very angry." Trelawny said. "Sure, well…we'll rescue Sean and then we'll get ourselves lost, good and proper. It's a blg country." Arthur said to him. "I hope so…" Trelawny said as the four of them get on their horses.
"Let's head up river and find this boat." Arthur said. "Keep your eyes open for Pinkertons. They've got patrols out all over this area." Javier informs him as they gallop through the hill. "Yes, south of the river West Elizabeth isn't a very welcoming place right now." Trelawny said. Then they come up to the edge and see a boat in the river down below.
"Down there, reckon those might be our boys." (Y/n) points out. "Alright, gentlemen and lady. Follow me. We'll follow them, nice and easy. Let's make sure it's him first before you go starting another war." Trelawny tells them.
"You think they can see us?" Arthur asked him. "If they can, we're just three fellers and a lady out on the trail. Act natural, we'll be fine." Trelawny assures. "So you've been gone for a while?" Arthur said, curiously. "Much as I love dodging the law and sleeping in the dirt with you derelicts, I do have other business to attend to" Trelawny replied.
"What happened to New York?" (Y/n) asked him. "You know how life is, never a straight road anywhere." Trelawny replied. "Especially with you." Arthur said. "Nice to know I'm missed, though. Have you run out of people to rob?" Trelawny asked him. "Oh, we'll never run out of people to rob." Arthur replied and (y/n) chuckles, softly. "But without me you'll not find the caliber of victim that I find. Come on, let's keep them in sight." Trelawny said and (y/n) turned her head to Javier, who was being quiet.
"You alright, Javier Escuella? You're quiet…" she asked, worried. "He hasn't stopped talking since we left you and Arthur in Valentine. It's the longest ride of my life." Javier replied. "Cute, dear boy, very cute…" Trelawny mutters. "Pick up the pace a bit. Apparently, there's a camp somewhere around here where the bounty hunters meet and transfer before continuing out west. I imagine that's where they're headed…" Trelawny said then he noticed that the boat had stopped.
"Look, they've stopped. Get your binoculars out, let's see what we're dealing with here." He said and everyone pulls out their binoculars. "So who are these bounty hunters?" (Y/n) asked, curiously. "Don't know too much about Ike Skelding's boys, but I hear they're a big crew and wild. Built some reputation in the last year or two." Arthur replied as they look through the binoculars and see some men getting out.
"That looks like Sean to me…" Javier points out as they see a man trying to fight out of the grip of the other men. "Certainly kicking up enough of a fuss. Yep, that's definitely Sean." Arthur said just as the men knocked down Sean and started kicking him.
"Oh, they're giving him a decent kicking." (Y/n) said. "Well, you can only imagine the shit he's been giving them." Arthur said and she nods in agreement. "True." She mutters as the hunters pick Sean up and carry him. "Oh yes. They're taking him up the canyon." Trelawny said while Arthur moves his binoculars up and sees Charles on the other side.
"There's Charles, on the other side. Let’s go." Arthur said as they put away their binoculars. "What about the other two down there?" Javier asked. "I've got an idea, follow me." Trelawny said and they start to follow him as he goes around and makes his way down.
"We should do this quietly if we can." Javier said. "Leave it to me and Miss (l/n), gentlemen. We'll go around and create a distraction, then you two sneak across and do the dirty on them." Trelawny said and (y/n) turns to him. "Excuse me?" She said, confused. "Come with me, Miss (l/n)." Trelawny said and (y/n) follows him.
"Alright, in thirty seconds I need you to act sick and then pass out." Trelawny tells her and (y/n) nods. "Okay." She said and they trot along the bank, getting closer to the hunters. "Isn't this beautiful, darlin'?" Trelawny asked, extending his arm out in a dramatic manner. "Nothing like a wonderful stroll out on this beautiful day." He said and (y/n) starts to wipe away her forehead then starts to breath, heavily.
"Darlin', are you alright?" Trelawny asked, concerned. "I-I...don't...know..." (y/n) said, breathless, then she goes limp and falls off her horse. It wasn't an easy fall as she felt the pain from the impact but she gritted her teeth to keep from screaming and groaning in pain.
"Darlin'?! Oh my Lord!" Trelawny exclaims, fearfully, then he begins to panic and becomes emotional before he turns to the men. "Sirs, please!! Please, help me!!" He exclaims. "What's the problem?" one of the bounty hunters asked. "My-My wife! She-she just passed out! I-I-I don't know what to do!!! Please! Please help!" Trelawny said, frantically. "Oh, calm down, mister." The second hunter said just as Arthur and Javier sneak up behind the hunters and kill them with knives.
"Come on. Let's get up there." Javier said as (y/n) opens her eyes and gets up. "A pleasure as always, gentlemen and Miss (l/n). I think you have it from here." Trelawny said and he begins to walk away while Arthur turns to you. "You alright?" He asked. "Yeah, just hit the ground harder than I realized." She said as she rubs the back of her head.
Arthur was about to say something when Javier speaks up. "Come on. We got two halfway up the canyon to deal with." he shouts and the duo follows him up the canyon. "We're gonna have to shoot our way up there." Javier said and they pull out their guns and began to fire at the hunters.
"Up there, on the cliff! I see Charles up there." (Y/n) said as she and the men shoot a few of the bounty hunters and sees Charles knocking and killing some men out. "Quick…come on, let's get up there." Javier said and they make their way through the canyon and up the hill.
As (y/n) ran through the canyon, a hunter comes up behind her and grabs her. She fights the man by elbowing him in the stomach and the man groaned in pain but was able to wrap an arm around her neck. She struggles in his grip when a gunshot sounds out and the man falls back, his grip loosened.
(y/n) gasps for air then coughs before Arthur comes up to her. "Thank you." She said to him and he nods as Charles comes up to them. "Their camp's up this way, come on." He said. "I'll take the left side, Charles. You go right, okay? Let's take these hijos de putas!" Javier exclaimed and the four of them head up the hill and through a forest to see more bounty hunters.
"A damn army of these bastards. How much is Sean's bounty?" Arthur asked as they continue to open fire at the hunters. "More than he's probably worth." (Y/n) jokes. "Maybe we should turn him in ourselves." Charles said. "Still time." Arthur offers and (Y/n) and Charles chuckle as the shootout continues on.
Moments later, the remaining hunters ran off and the four run up to see Sean hanging upside-down from a tree. "Someone cut this rope, my head's killing me." Sean said. "Come on! Let's get Sean and get outta here!" Javier said and Arthur comes up to Sean and cuts him down.
He falls to the ground and Arthur begins to cut the binds around his ankles. "You know…you're a lot less ugly from that other angle, Arthur." Sean said and Arthur scoffs. "Come on." He grumbles as he helps Sean up, who then noticed (y/n). "Now, Miss (l/n)! She's a beauty from every angle." Sean said before he chuckles. "Tell that to the wolves after I'm done with ya." (Y/n) threatens and the other men start to chuckle.
"Ah...feisty as always. I like that." Sean chuckles once he gets to his feet. "Come on." Arthur grumbles, turning away from Sean. "Do I get a hug, Arthur? A warm embrace for a lost brother, now found?" Sean asked and Arthur turns to him then smirks before placing a hand on Sean's shoulder. "You know…nothing means more to me than this gang. The bond we share…it's the most real thing to me. I would kill for it, I would happily die for it…but in spite of all that…I would have easily left you here to rot…If Charles hadn't stopped me." Arthur tells him and (y/n) giggles a bit.
"I don't believe a word of that, Arthur." Sean said and Arthur shoves him towards Javier. "Get him out of here." He said. "You're a great man, Arthur Morgan…the kind a young whippersnapper can really admire." Sean praises. "Oh shut up. Right, we should split up. Javier, will you escort Mr. Macguire back to camp. Charles, best you ride separately. Be careful, there's patrols everywhere." Arthur tells them.
"What about you and Miss (l/n)?" Javier asked him. "We're gonna see what's worth taking here. We'll meet you back there as soon as we can." Arthur tells them and Javier nods. "Okay, come on." Javier said to Sean as they mount his horse. "Have I got stories for you…" Sean said as he gets on Javier's horse. "Yeah…I can't wait." Javier said, unenthusiastically. "I imagine you all missed me a lot…but fear not, the joy's back in your lives now." Sean said before laughing again as they all take off, leaving Arthur and (y/n) alone.
"Alright, let's look around." Arthur tells her and she nods. "You're the boss." (Y/n) said and Arthur scoffs as she starts to search a nearby body for loot. Arthur starts to go for a different body but he turns his head to glance at her, admiring her a bit. But he quickly turn his head away as she starts to stand up.
"Find anything?" He asked her as he kneels down to a body and searches it. "A few dollars and a pocket watch." (Y/n) said as she holds up the items in her hand. "I'm gonna keep looking." She tells him and he nods as he pulls out a few dollars out of the dead body in front of him.
As he continues to loot the bodies of the dead bounty hunters, the (h/c) woman started to occupy his mind and he tries to figure out the way he feels about her.
In a way, he did care about her but he started to think that he cared about her way more than he should. Like he said, he would do anything for this gang and would die for it but he would go above and beyond for (y/n). And for Annebeth.
Hell, when (y/n) told him that Annebeth's father left her a few months after her daughter was born, he almost had half a mind to track the bastard down and give the guy a piece of his mind. One thing he hates is a man turning his back on his family, especially a sweet little girl like Annebeth. That asshole didn't know how lucky he was.
Part of him want to go ahead and tell (y/n) how he feels whenever he could but he couldn't bring himself to say it. That's why he hadn't really been at the camp much, trying to keep himself busy and figure what he wanted when it came to (y/n).
And after what happened to Eliza and Issac and after the break-up between him and Mary...he just didn't know if he could put his heart on the line again. He believes you can't have good things happen when you live a bad life. But then again, (y/n) and Annebeth were already pulled into this life and (y/n) was here looting bodies with him. So maybe there is a chance...
He started to think over of what to say to (y/n) when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He quickly turns and sees (y/n) standing next to him. "Whoa, easy, cowboy." She teased as she holds her hands up. "We should get outta here before anyone comes by." (Y/n) said and Arthur nods. "You're right. C'mon." He said and they go and mount their horses.
"Hey, last one to camp buys beer for the winner." (Y/n) said and Arthur chuckles. "I'd like to see you try with that horse of yours." He remarks and (y/n) turns to him. "Is that a challenge I hear, Mr Morgan?" She asked, the corner of her lip twitched as she raises her eyebrow at him.
"Maybe." Arthur said, cheekily, and (y/n) smiles. "Okay, cowboy. Now you've gone and done it." She teases as she holds the reigns, tighter. "Alright, since you're so confident." Arthur said. "Okay, when I say go...." she said and she eyes Arthur, who eyes her as well, for a moment before shouting. "GO!"
And the duo snap their reigns and they take off, the sound of hooves stomping the ground fill their ears and the wind blowing through their hairs.
