A Strange Kindness
It had been a few days since the encounter with Agent Milton and Ross. (Y/n) was worried every second that the Pinkertons were gonna show up and arrest everyone, she kept looking around for any signs of things out of the ordinary.
But she did her best to keep her mind off of things and it did work for awhile but the fear that something would happened played in the back of her mind. Doing chores, taking care of Annebeth and Arthur being there to keep her company were the only things that didn't make her go too crazy and paranoid.
She knows that the men in the gang would do anything to keep them all safe but there was this small part of her that something was gonna happen, and it was either gonna end with someone dead or they would have to pack up and move.
But it turns out, her instincts were right.
She was playing with Annebeth and Jack when Dutch and John come back with an injured Strauss. Everyone came towards them, worried, and asked what the hell happened. Dutch told them that after John and Arthur met him and Strauss at the local bar in Valentine, they were ambushed by Leviticus Cornwall and his hired men.
They had John and Strauss as Dutch and Arthur come out and Dutch tried to talk to Cornwall but it ended with a gun fight. They shot and killed a couple of Cornwall’s men and they shot Strauss in the leg.
Luckily they were able to get out, Arthur stayed back to make sure no one followed them. Dutch and Hosea went over to Dutch’s tent to talk while Grimshaw went to go take care of Strauss.
Minutes later, Arthur showed up and (y/n) sighed with relief as she goes over to him. "Oh Arthur." She said, relieved, as she goes to hug him, he hugs her back. She pulls back and looks back at him. "You okay?" She asked him. "Yeah, I'm fine." He said. "Dutch told us what happened." (Y/n) said and Arthur nods. "Yeah, I need to go talk to him. I'll met up with you later." He said and she nods as she goes over to her tent.
Arthur approaches Dutch’s tent where there was already a lively argument going on. "So…We keep heading east. Is that the plan?" Hosea asked Dutch, annoyed. "For now." Dutch replied. "And when do we stop, when we reach Paris?" Hosea asked, angrily.
"Oh that’d be nice, join the Commune?" Dutch asked, sarcastically, and Hosea shakes his head.
"We stop when we find someplace sensible, shake them that’s following us and lie low." Dutch said and Hosea sighs. "This is lying low? We’ve turned into a bunch of killers, I mean it. We ain’t even got the delusion of being anything but a bunch of killers." he said, angrily.
"We are just trying to survive, Hosea. We don’t have a choice. This’ll end soon." Dutch said, trying to assure him. "Damn right it will." Hosea yells and he leaves the tent as Arthur comes in.
"Constipated as usual." Dutch grumbles as he watches Hosea's back. "So, we moving?" Arthur asked him. "Micah told me of a place we can lie low. Look here…Dewberry Creek, he said. Maybe you, (y/n) and Charles can go take a look…clear off anyone you find…before the whole lot of us move in…looking so conspicuous." Dutch said.
"And how we gonna do that?" Arthur asked him, exasperated. "I don’t know. Start dancing?" Dutch suggested with sarcasm. "Looks like I’ve turned into the damn errand boy." Arthur grumbles, annoyed, as he walks out the tent. "You have turned into my son…you worry, because I worry. We are just the same." Dutch tells him as Arthur shakes his head.
He walks over to Charles and said. "Charles, come with me." Charles looks up at him and nods. "Sure, this can wait." Charles said as he stops what he's doing and Arthur goes over to (y/n). "(Y/n), come with us. We got work to do." He said as she turns to him. "Okay, let me go ask Abigail to watch Annebeth and I'll be by the horses." She said and Arthur nods.
After Abigail said she would watch over Annebeth, (y/n) makes it over to Arthur and Charles as they get to their horses. "So where are we going?" (y/n) asked Arthur. "Find a new spot to camp. We’re packing up and moving on." he replied, as they mount their horses and head out.
"Again?" Charles asked, exasperated. "We have to. And fast. We’d already pushed our luck too far before that mess we just made in Valentine." Arthur said. "Ah, that didn’t sound good." Charles said. "Killed a lot of law. Killed a lot of Cornwall’s men. They must know where we are by now." Arthur replied.
"So, we’re heading south?" (y/n) asked him. "Yeah, area called Dewberry Creek. Dutch wants us to give it a look, make sure it’s clear and a good place to lie low for a while." Arthur said. "I’ve only known him a few months, but…the way he talks, I never thought I’d see him wanting to head south." Charles said. "Right…and I know by now, there ain’t no lying low." Arthur said.
"There’s too many of us for that." (Y/n) said and Arthur nods. "And, there ain’t no way Dutch is gonna just…a hut hide away in a cave somewhere. Goes against everything he stands for. That’d be admitting we’re nothing more than low-down criminals." Arthur said. "Which…we are." Charles said. "You don’t have to tell me." Arthur said.
"So where does it end?" Charles asked Arthur. "Where does what end?" Arthur asked, confused. "The moving, the running…" Charles listed. "Dutch don’t see it as running." Arthur said. "Call it what you want." Charles grumbles. "I don’t know. Before, put enough time and distance between you and the problem, eventually it went away." Arthur said when they come up to a dried up creek area.
"Hang on a second…I think that must be it up ahead. The old dried up creek." Arthur said as they looked around. "Seems very open." (y/n) said. "Yeah, it does. Ain’t sure it’d be the best in the rain, neither. Well, let’s take a look around." Arthur said and the trio spread out and look around the area.
"Hey, I see something over there. You see it? Someone on the ground there." Charles pointed out and the three come up to where he was pointing and find a corpse. "He’s been shot. Looks like trouble got here before us." Arthur said and (y/n) looks to her right and saw some tents.
"There’s a camp just up ahead…" she said and Arthur and Charles look over as well. "Sure. Let’s get ready for business. Any issues…shoot first, debate second." Arthur said and Charles looks at Arthur.
"I’m not gonna shoot for the sake of it." Charles said. "Survival’s for the sake of it. Quit talking. Alright, Charles, (y/n), let’s go take a look." Arthur said and they dismount their horses and walk towards the nearby camp.
"Look, here it is. Few tents, but…place looks empty." Arthur said and they look through the tents. "Where is everybody?" (y/n) asked as they kept looking around the empty camp. "Maybe they heard us coming. Be careful." Arthur tells her and the trio come up to a cart to see it was covered in debris.
They start to clear it when they find a woman and two children, all of them shaking with fear. The woman had a rifle in her hand. Arthur, Charles and (y/n) were surprised by this and they back up, holding their hands up.
"It’s okay…you can come outta there. You okay? We don’t mean you no harm." Charles said as the woman and her kids emerge from the cart but they don't say anything. "He said a-are you okay?" Arthur asked her then she finally speaks.
"Do they speak German?" The woman asked in her native language of German. "G-German?" She asked in English. Arthur and Charles look at each other and Arthur was about to say something when (y/n) speaks up. "I do." she said in German.
Arthur and Charles seemed shocked by this as they look at her. The woman smiled and sobbed with relief. "They...they took my husband." she said to (y/n) in German. "Who?" (y/n) asked her as Arthur turned to (y/n), shocked. "Some men came and attack. And they took him, last night." she replied. "Where?" (Y/n) asked and the woman points out the direction then (y/n) turns the boys.
"Some men came by and kidnapped her husband." (Y/n) tells them. "Okay, well can you tell them to get the hell outta here." Arthur said and (y/n) and Charles give him a disapproving look.
"Arthur, we've gotta help these people." (Y/n) said. "Agreed." Charles said. "Ain’t no business of ours. I don’t even speak their language." Arthur said and (y/n) sighs. "You ain’t as tough and dense as all that. Come on, Arthur." Charles said and they get on their horses.
"The woman was pointing this way, let’s see if we can pick up a trail." (Y/n) said as they gallop down the road. "There, tracks. Come on." Charles said. "I don’t see nothing." Arthur grumbles then Charles points at the hoof marks. "Hoof marks, this way." he said and they take off.
"Didn't know you spoke German." Arthur said to (y/n), questioning. "Yeah, my mother was German and she taught me when I was younger." (Y/n) replied to him then Charles looks over at Arthur.
"What’s going on with you?" Charles asked Arthur as they follow the tracks. "What you mean?" Arthur asked him. "You were just gonna send that woman and her children on their way?" Charles asked. "We’re wanted men. We got Pinkertons breathing down our necks. We should be moving camp, not running off on some wild goose chase." Arthur replied.
"Come on, Arthur. That’s not how you are." Charles said. "Well, maybe you don’t know me as well as you think you do." Arthur said but then Charles slows his horse down. "Hold up, let me check this." he said and he looks over the tracks. "Okay, looks like they go down this way." He said and they take off.
"So…what happened with those Pinkertons, anyway? When you two were fishing with the kids?" Charles asked the two. "Said they were onto us. Offered me freedom if I turned Dutch in." Arthur replied. "They picked the wrong man there." Charles chuckled.
"We should have moved right then, if you ask me." (Y/n) said and Arthur nods in agreement. "Bastards told us they’d killed Mac, Said it right in front of Jack and Annebeth." Arthur said and Charles shakes his head. "Those kids… it’s gonna be tough for them." Charles said as they go along the shoreline and see some more tracks.
"Yeah…but they have more folk looking out for them than most of the rest of us had growing up." Arthur said. "John said he was going back to the auction yard to collect the money for those sheep." said Charles. "He’d be a damn idiot going anywhere near that town right now." Arthur said.
"He reckoned he’d be able to slip in and out." Charles said and Arthur chuckles a bit. "Oh, well…if it’s John’s idea, it must be a good one." He said, sarcastically.
"What is with you and him?" Charles asked Arthur. "Well, he disappeared on us for a while when Jack was real young, a long while, a year or more. And we was…family, you know? Guess I still ain’t fully forgiven him for that." Arthur replied and (y/n) looks down.
She remembered she was brought into the group sometime after John left Abigail. When she saw a woman with a child on her own, she asked Arthur about her and Arthur told her how John just up and left her and the gang.
(Y/n) felt sympathy for Abigail but she also took notice how angry Arthur was about John leaving. (Y/n) understood but it seemed that Arthur took this a bit personally and she questioned him about this but he gave her some excuse that she didn't believe. She could tell by the expression on his face that he was hiding something and it might be too personal for him to share it.
And a secret she still hasn't learned about him.
"There’s a camp up ahead." Charles said as he points at some tents up ahead, which pulled (y/n) out of her thoughts. "Be careful." she said to him as he gets ahead. "Seems deserted. Let’s take a look." Charles said and they get off their horses and walk into the camp.
"So where is this guy?" Arthur asked. "I don’t know…but you know something? This is a better camp spot than back there. Much easier to defend." Charles said. "Maybe…" Arthur said and thats when (y/n) sees a tied up man. "This looks like our feller, gentlemen." She said as the man shouts, in German. "Help."
"Quick, cut him free and let’s get outta here." Charles said as Arthur goes over to him and pulls out his knife. (Y/n) kneels down to the man and said. "It's okay, sir. We're here to help." She said as Arthur begins to cut his binds.
"Careful! Careful! It’s a trap! Careful!" The man warns and (y/n) looks over and sees some men coming out. "Take cover!" she shouts and her, Arthur and Charles go duck behind some crates as the men start shooting at them.
The trio began to pull out their respective guns and began to fire at the men until there was none of them left. "That all of ’em?" Arthur asked. "I think so." (Y/n) said as they, cautiously, stand up. "You get him untied and I’ll see what they’ve left behind for us." Charles said as he goes to look around.
"Help me!" The man said and (y/n) and Arthur go over to him and Arthur begins to cut him loose. "It’s okay, we’re getting you out of here." (Y/n) tells him and the man gives a smile of relief. "Thank you, my friend, thank you." he said as she and Arthur help him up once he was untied.
"You wait there a second." Arthur tells (y/n) and the man before he turns to Charles. "Charles, go find Dutch, get the caravan to divert here. This spot should work for us." Arthur said then he turns back to (y/n). "Alright, come on." Arthur said to the man, who looks at him confused then looks at (y/n).
"We're taking you back to your family." She explained. "You’re taking me to my family? Oh thank you…how did they find you?" He asked her. "We were looking for someplace to camp and found them." (y/n) said as she leads him to Arthur’s horse.
Arthur mounts his horse and the man gets on behind him. "What the hell did you do to those fellers?" Arthur asked the man. "What did you say?" The man asked then he looks over at (y/n) as she mounts her horse. "What did he say?" The man asked her. "He was wondering why did those men take you?" (y/n) said and they start to take off.
"Oh...Money. My family has a gold mining business. They wanted to send a ransom." the man said and Arthur looks between them. "How did someone even come up with them words?" Arthur asked and (y/n) laughs. "He said those men took him for ransom since his family owns a mining company. " (Y/n) said and they finally come up to the man's family.
"There they are!" (y/n) said and the man looked over and smiles when he sees his family. Once they stopped, the man jumps off of Arthur’s horse and runs to his family. "Oh, thank God. Darling!" he exclaimed and his wife turns and goes to embrace him as she cries.
"I thought you were dead…" she cried. "I nearly was. My darlings…my precious darlings. Wonderful." the man said as he goes to hug his kids. The woman then comes up to Arthur and (y/n). "Both of you are great people…great people. We are blessed…to have met you. Thanks." she said and (y/n) smiles. "You're welcome. Now you and your family need to get outta here. This place ain’t safe." (Y/n) tells them and the husband and wife nod and they head to their carriage.
"Yes, yes, we’re leaving." The man said and the kids and the woman get on but he goes to the side of the carriage. "I have something for you. Just a second." he said and he pulls out something then turns to the two and hands them a bar of gold. "Thanks a lot. From the bottom of my heart." he said and Arthur takes it, shocked and surprised at this. (Y/n) was shocked as well as the man gets on the carriage and they leave.
"And you just wanted to send her and her kids off on their own without him." (Y/n) said to Arthur, a bit of a gloating smile on her face. Arthur gives out a gruff chuckle as they get back on their horses and head back to that camp area where they saved that man.
Sometime later, the gang arrives and Dutch smiles as he looks around. "You were right. Oh, this place…it’ll be perfect for us." Dutch said, proudly, then he looks over to see Arthur and (y/n) sitting on the ground. "Hello, Arthur and (y/n)." He said. "Dutch." Arthur and (y/n) greet as the carriages stop.
Then Annebeth jumps off of one of the carriages and runs to (y/n). "Momma!" She exclaims and goes to hug her mother's leg. (Y/n) smiles then goes to pick her up and hold her. "Miss Grimshaw, Mr. Pearson…put everyone to work. Make this place a home. Well, I don’t know where the hell we are…but, we are going to make the best of it." Dutch instructs as everyone starts to get out and pull out the supplies.
