Kristof had been taking a leisurely stroll down the sidewalk that morning. It was a calming, peaceful sunrise, and since he didn't have work for a while he wanted to enjoy his free time while it lasted.
Not many people were out so early in the morning, which was a tranquil change of pace. Kristof didn't exactly like too many people crowding him but he had to deal with it. He liked times like these because he could just take a deep breath in, let it out, and unwind without someone breathing down his neck every five minutes.
Kristof took a glance around at his surroundings, lifting up his wrist to check the time; 9:00. He walked over to a nearby bench and sat down, folding his hands on his lap and closing his eyes for just a moment.
Everything was peaceful.
"Kristof...", a familiar voice played out. It sounded almost like a whisper. Kristof shut his eyes tighter. He knew that voice all too well. It was the voice of his wife, Nancy. Kristof loved his wife, he really did. But she knew better than to follow after him during times like these, when he was taking time for himself.
But it sounded off. It sounded like his wife's voice, but more gravelly, as if she were angry at him. He couldn't imagine any reason she would be angry.
He sighed quietly as he began to speak, his eyes still shut as he resumed his relaxed position. "Yes darling?"
"I need you for a moment..."
He opened his eyes, taking a look around. She seemed close by but Kristof couldn't see Nancy, wherever she was. He was becoming confused. "Dear, where are you?"
"That's not important. What is important is that I need you..."
He got up, following after his wife's voice. He couldn't remember anything after that. He couldn't remember the previous minutes that ticked by, he couldn't remember how far he was in the woods, how long he had been walking. All he could focus on was Nancy's voice, calling for him, somewhere.
Eventually, he stopped. He couldn't continue. He dropped to his knees, surrounded by flora in the middle of a clearing. Kristof, with his hands covering his face, sobbed quietly.
"Kristof..."
He shook with his sobs. He tried his best to calm down, wiping away his tears to face his wife. "Y-Yes Nancy?"
A large creature stared down at him, its eyes dead and lifeless as drool dripped down its boney chin. It smiled.
The tears wouldn't stop. He didn't care if they didn't stop. His eyes widened, pupils dilated. He couldn't remember how to breathe at that moment. All senses were frozen as fear took hold of his entire frame.
And in an instant, Kristof had vanished.
All that was left was his wristwatch, forever beeping 11:00.
