Chapter 2

A/N: Please enjoy.  I need more sleep.

With a sigh, an older looking boy rests his head on the back of his comfy looking chair, kicking off of the desk in front of it and spinning in circles.  It's hard not to love swirly chairs.  It's a blessing that most hotels seem to have them.  Finally slowing down after getting a bit dizzy, he pulls a computer out of the messenger bag slouching on the floor and places it on the mahogany desk.  That is, after brushing aside the many pamphlets full of advertisements and resort activities.  That's not what he's here for, anyway.

The web browser is already opened, though he does have to work on getting hooked up to the hotel's wifi.  He glances longingly at the neatly folded bed behind him, the pleasure of camping out at different hotels all of the time.  Shaking his head, he turns back to the computer screen.  It says, "Virtual School Sign In."  Password: exbo.  Student name: Gold.

Gold takes college courses online.  He's too restless to be able sit in classes all day.  Instead, Gold moves across the country, a new place to sleep every night!  Nothing but him, his backpack and computer, and his trusty companion, Exbo.  Well, Gold wishes his story could be as adventerous and crazy sounding as that.  When he first carried out with this plan of his, he had dreamt it would be.  It's not like it's helped with his restlessness at all.

Gold climbs out of the swirly chair, tugging at the cheap fabric curtains to let in the warm afternoon sun.  The light made the baby blue room feel so much more welcoming.  Gold sits back down with a sigh.  If anything, taking online classes has only given him the opportunity to indulge in his restlessness.

He tells himself, just as he does everyday, that he'll sit down for the next few hours and just get the day's work over with.  That being said, if Gold is going to be sitting for a while, he has to find a comfortable position.  Gold wiggles around in his seat, attempting to get comfortable. He kicks his feet up on the desk. Only then does he realize that he's still in his shoes. Wiggling his toes, he realizes they can barely breathe. Gold takes a second to untie his shoelaces, tugging off his sneakers and throws them across the room. They hit the wall with a soft clunk before falling to the ground.

Okay. What's Gold doing again? Oh, right. Getting comfortable. He kicks his feet back up onto the desk. Now Gold is ready to get to work. He shifts his laptop onto his lap. The running motor of the computer kind of burns his legs, even through his baggy black jeans. Now that he thinks about it, the edge of the desk is cutting into his legs uncomfortably, too. Gold ends up spending the next however many minutes looking for a new position. Nothing seems to be working out for him. Not that that's anything new, though.

Gold sighs in agitation, throwing his head back against the seat.  His backwards facing hat nearly pops off at the action.  Gold removes it from his head, holding it in one hand, as he combs his jet black hair with his other.  His fingers in his hair only make it more static-y, clinging to his forehead and sticking up everywhere else.  Gold groans in annoyance.  When will it ever end?  The only way he knows how to fix this particular issue is with a shower, so taking a shower is what he does.

Gold flops into his chair after about an hour of showering and lazily changing up his outfit with the few clothing items he carries with him.  This is his life, filled with nothing but the many struggles that any normal person faces.  What kind of adventure is this?  An adventure should be action packed, filled with all sorts of cool artifacts, heroes, villains, maybe a little romance...

That's when Gold gets yet another distracting idea.  He nearly leaps out of his chair, quickly pacing back and forth, looking at his sock covered feet as they shuffle along the short hotel carpet.  Maybe Gold just needs some romance in his life.  Maybe that will solve all of his issues.  Gold pauses in his pacing, paying careful attention to one crucial detail.  How is he going to find love?

Gold attempts to brainstorm a bunch of possibilities, eventually wandering out onto the patio.  He looks down at the bustling streets below, tiny little bodies swarming around a cute little gray plaza.  Perhaps Gold could just...wander down there, and look for true love?  He did just take a shower, so going into public right now shouldn't be that bad.

He shrugs, walking back inside and closing the door behind him.  It can't go that badly.  Gold slings his messanger bag over his back.  He smiles at the long tipped lighter poking out of his backpack.  It may seem a little weird, but this is his Exbo.  It's the only companion Gold can have that's just about as fiery as he is.  He found Exbo on one of his first adventures.  Gold had been playing something along the lines of hide and seek with no one but himself, climbing in to the back of a big red truck.  There, in the corner of the uncomfortable black trunk, was Exbo, his long black snout and thick red handle.  It had been a fun find for Gold's younger self, but never after has he experienced an adventure quite like that.  Gold sulks.  He hasn't had much of any sort of adventures at all.

Gold shakes it off, hiking his bag up his shoulders. He stares intently at the door, bright honey eyes glowing. He nearly breaks down the door in excitement. This'll be a new kind of adventure of its own! He groans once he gets to the elevator, looking around to find the stairs. Gold nearly flies down them once he does.

Taking a leap outside of the automatic hotel lobby doors, Gold takes a moment to appreciate his surroundings. He breathes in the crisp, cold air, stinging his nose in a refreshing way. He looks excitedly at the gray bricks layed out under his feet, the black metal furniture for people to relax, the large windows revealing the warm inside rooms. Gold then focuses his gaze on the swarms of people. So many people, and so many possibilities.

Gold sees one girl walking by herself, twirling her long brown hair around her finger. Gold runs up to her, trying to push away his awkwardness to boldly tap her on the shoulder. She turns around, blinking large blue eyes in surprise. "Yo, I'm Gold, wassup withchu?" The girl looks at him funny before turning her head away sharply and walking ahead faster. Gold shakes his head, sighing as he looks at his feet in disappointment. He lifts his head, puffing up his cheeks angrily. "You know what? I didn't like it you, anyways!"  He huffs, turning away indignantly.

Gold looks around for his next subject.  Every time he sees another possibility, the girls are holding hands with another guy.  Guess that makes them unavailable, then.  He sighs, realizing that that's never been him.  When Gold thinks about it, maybe he has held a girl's hand once or twice, but he's never really felt attached.  None of the relationships ever last.

Gold is caught slightly off guard by a wind tugging at his back.  He looks up, only just noticing the gray clouds ahead.  A small droplet of rain water lands right between his glowing yellow eyes, making Gold flinch.  He looks around him, noticing the crowds dashing towards cover.  He sighs in defeat, heading back to the hotel.  Gold stands in front of the door for a moment, allowing himself to enjoy the pushing an pulling of the refreshing breezes before stepping inside.

Gold flops back into the plushy spiny chair of his temporary stay.  He stares at his blank computer screen in a moment of defeat before another bad idea gets the better of him.  Why not sign up for online dating?  Gold basically spends his whole life on the computer, anyway.  He finds the first website to come up, figuring this last resort could be his only shot.

After designing a profile about himself that can seem as appealing as possible, Gold starts looking through others.  He gets exhausted just looking at the numbers of pages of profiles.  It's also a bit concerning that some people with different names and profiles have the exact same images, making it painfully obvious that most were pulled off of the Internet.  Finally, Gold sends a request to a handful that don't seem too bad.

Gold prepares for day one, or date one, making sure to shower and clean up nicely.  He takes a last look at the profiles, an image of a cute, pale little blond haired girl on the front.  When he meets her at a cafe nearby, he barely realizes she's the one he was looking for.  Instead of looking anything like the flirtatious online picture, she's skinny as a stick with skin so fake that it's almost orange.  Nope, this isn't going to work.

Date two doesn't end up so bad.  At least, so Gold thinks.  He meets with the girl at a bar, as she had insisted.  She looks exactly like her image, so at least she's honest.  Though, perhaps Gold was a bit too hopeful, seeing as the girl wanted to hear nothing about his personality and was immediately disappointed at Gold's sour reaction to her hand on his leg.

Date three wasn't bad at all.  She's simple, cute, and has a sweet personality.  Gold smiles as they walk through a park together, asking each other simple questions to get to know one another.  This is the kind of date Gold was hoping for.  All had been going well until Gold was the one being interviewed.  The girls asks if he's graduated from college.  Gold hesitates to admit that he's taking virtual school.  She then asks if Gold has a job.  Obviously not.  Cringing at this point, the girl asks Gold where he's getting the money to support himself, then.  Scratching the back of his head, Gold awkwardly explains that he's surviving off of the money he was supposed to use to go to an actual college.  He tries to explain that it's all part of his big adventure, but there's really nothing adventurous about it.  Gold sighs realizing that it's only making him feel worse about himself.

Now Gold's back in the comfort of his messy hotel room.  He sits his computer on his lap, giving it one last shot.  He gets a notification saying that more people have joined the dating sight.  Gold gives it a look.  He clicks the one at the top, blinking in surprising interest.  He thought the image looked a little girly at first, but according to the profile, it's a boy.  His near shoulder length red hair looks soft to the touch, his skin is nice and pale, and even the angry scowl on his face looks somehow appealing.  Gold smiles.  Why not give it a shot?  This could turn out to be very interesting.
