Chapter 3: Dragon's Bane

But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.
———————————————————————
When I woke up, I was laying in a bed that didn't seem familiar. I sat up and looked around, however it didn't help my confusion. My head was throbbing and I couldn't think clearly. Everything from last night was a blur.

I looked to my side and saw Annis laying next to me. She was sleeping pretty soundly. Normally, I wouldn't mind, since she was technically my Guardian Angel and all that. However, the one thing I did mind was the fact she was only in her underwear.

Draco: "The—"

I was about to say the hell? However I remembered what I was told about mentioning it casually here.

I leaned over and shook her shoulder, making sure to have her whole body covered first. I've seen enough anime to know I'm about to get punched in the face or kicked through a wall.

Draco: "Annis, wake up"

She slowly opened her eyes and sat up, making the covers fall off of her upper half. I quickly turned away so my back was to her.

She yawned and stretched.

Annis: "Morning, Draco. It's good to see you're awake"

Draco: "Huh? What do you mean?"

Suddenly, the events of last night came rushing back into my mind. The fight with that weird Demon. What I did...

Draco: "What happened?"

Annis slipped the covers off and walked up to me. I still kept my back to her though.

Annis: "Thank you for your politeness, but as your Guardian Angel, you may look upon me in this state"

I grabbed one of the bathrobes out of my dresser and tossed it at her.

Draco: "Yeah, I've heard that before"

Annis: "You have?"

Draco: "No, I'm being sarcastic. Just put it on"

After she put the bathrobe on, I could finally look at her.

Draco: "Why were you even in my bed?"

Annis: "To help heal you, skin on skin contact is how us Angel's heal. Typically by warm embrace"

Draco: "Yeah, right. What happened last night?"

Annis: "We were attacked by one of the Sins"

Draco: "Sins?"

Annis: "The Sins are an elite group of Demons that serve under The Serpent himself. They are extremely high ranking Demons and are some of the most powerful out there. Some of them can even go toe to toe with Arana"

Draco: "Okay, but that doesn't explain how they found this place. Isn't it, like, protected by some magic or something?"

Annis: "No, in fact, the Demons know exactly where our headquarters are. However this is all holy ground, so no Demons may set foot on this land. It protects us while keeping Demons out"

Draco: "So how did that one Demon get in?"

Annis: "That... I do not know"

I suddenly remembered the burst of energy I had last night. I looked at the back of my hands, however all that remained was an outline of the dragon symbol that was there during the fight.

Draco: "Where were you during the fight? I could've died out there"

Annis: "You would not have died. I have seen the way you die, and then was not when it would've happened. And we Angels are not allowed to interfere unless given strict orders from the Lord"

Draco: "Fine, where is everyone else? Are they okay?"

Annis: "Alive, which is good. Alex and Nozomi had minor injuries, Yuki made it out nearly unscathed"

Draco: "What about Asuka?"

Her face went grim.

Annis: "She was badly injured, more than we thought at first. She's in her room now, resting. She'll survive, however she needs the rest. However, she has been out for nearly a week now"

Draco: "WHAT?!! A week?! How long was I out?!"

Annis: "Same amount as her. You nearly lost your life after what you did"

Draco: "I still don't even know what I did"

Annis: "In any case, you should go out and visit Arana, she has many questions for you"

Draco: "Right, I'll go pay her a visit"

I got dressed, still keeping my purple hoodie on. I never went anywhere without my hoodie, even during the summer. I left the bedroom and made my way down into the group area, which was completely empty. I left the room and walked to Arana's office, which I'm still not sure how I managed to find.

I walked in without knocking, however I honestly didn't care. Arana was standing over her desk, looking at some pretty old looking papers. They were worn and dusty, and probably even older than I was.

Arana: "Ah, Draco— Good to see you're awake. Please, close the door and sit down"

She seemed in a bit of a rush, her eyes looked exhausted from probably no sleep the previous nights. She had her coffee, however I don't think it was doing much for her.

I closed the door and walked over to a chair. Right before I could sit down, Arana suddenly grabbed me by my shirt collar and pinned me up against the wall. She looked extremely pissed off, almost to the point where I saw some murderous intent in her eyes.

Arana: "You aren't human, are you?!"

Draco: "What?! What are you talking about!"

She tightened her grip.

Arana: "Don't lie to me!!! No mortal would have it!!!!"

Draco: "Have what?! What's going on?! Let go of me!!!"

Suddenly, she seemed to calm down a bit. She lowered me back to the ground and backed away.

Arana: "Just— Tell me what you know about what you did"

Draco: "All I know is what Annis told me. That Sin guy came in and attacked everyone. I beat him, somehow"

Arana: "You don't know how? If you're lying to me, I'll send you into the same portal to Hell I did that Sin"

Draco: "I'm being serious! I don't know what I did!"

Arana collapsed into her desk chair and rubbed her eyes.

Arana: "This should not be possible..."

She looked up at me.

Arana: "Forgive me, but... everything that's happened in the past week has been extremely stressful and taxing on me. I've been researching day after day with no sleep"

Draco: "Researching what?"

Arana: "Sit, please"

I was a little wary to sit down.

Arana: "I won't attack you this time"

I sat down.

Arana: "What you did the other night wasn't normal"

I spoke sarcastically.

Draco: "Great, thanks, I hadn't figured that out myself"

Arana: "After the Sin attacked, I was ready to banish it. However you challenged it first. You unleashed a power that may be the death of us all..."

Draco: "What do you mean?"

Arana: "The power you have tapped into is called the Dragon Bane"

She pulled out one of the sheets of paper, which had the same dragon symbol that appeared on the back of my hand.

Arana: "Long ago, there was a war between Heaven and the Fallen Angels. The leader of the Fallen Angel's was named Lucifer, which I'm sure you've heard before. Many stories depict the war lasting maybe a year at most. However this actually went on for eons. Lucifer was ready to claim Heaven for himself, and he got extremely close to his goal. He had gained enough power to become a massive dragon, which burned anything it came across"

She pulled out a few more papers with images of Angels and Demons on them.

Arana: "To combat this, God bestowed upon his greatest warrior, the Dragon Bane. This warrior was named Michael, the Archangel. The power bestowed upon him was designed to overpower Lucifer in his dragon state and cast him down to the pits of Hell, hence the name, Dragon Bane. It's the bane of Lucifer, the sole power that can defeat him"

Draco: "That's... a lot of information"

Arana: "I think that you should spend today training. It's technically your first day, so you should at least learn the basics"

Draco: "Okay, who should I go see?"

Arana: "Well, that depends, have you decided on what you will specialize in?"

I thought for a moment.

Draco: "As cool as Elemental would be, I think I'll go for Combat"

Arana: "Very well, take two lefts down the hall and then a right. You should see the Combat training room. Good luck, Draco"

Draco: "Thanks"

I got up and went back into the halls. I followed her directions and eventually found myself at the Combat training room. There was no door, just the doorframe. I walked inside and was a little surprised on how small the place was, compared to everything else.

It was a small room with a few training dummies and punching bags spread throughout the room. There was an obvious fighting arena for vs battles, and another door which I assumed was the armory.

Standing in the center of the room, I saw Yuki. She was holding twin daggers, the handles wrapped in blue cloth and the blade having symbols of waves branded into them. She was up against another exorcist boy. He had a large staff in his hands. Around them, was about 10 other students.

The boy charged and swung his staff. Yuki leaped into the air with a backflip, landing right on top of the boy's staff, essentially pinning it to the ground. She sheathed her daggers in sheathes on the back of her skirt. She then grabbed him by the collar, pulled upwards, and flung him right over her shoulders. He slammed down onto the ground. Yuki calmly walked over and placed her foot on the back of his head. She was wearing heels, so that definitely wasn't comfortable unless your a masochist. They were a type of combat heels though, so she wouldn't have a hard time walking.

Yuki: "And that, my dear students, is an example of someone getting their ass kicked. Hope you took notes, cause the next person who calls me hot, like this loser, will get the same treatment. Am I clear?"

Everyone nodded.

Yuki: "Good, now one of you take this guy to the nurse"

She got off of him and noticed me by the door. She leaped over a railing of the battle arena and walked over to me.

Yuki: "Good to see you're finally awake, took you long enough"

Draco: "Yeah, wasn't really my intention"

Yuki grinned.

Yuki: "Still, you kicked some ass. I was a little trapped under some rubble, but I saw it all. I'm impressed"

Draco: "You're impressed? Guess I've done something even God can't do"

Yuki: "Oh shut up, come with me"

She brought me into the room I expected to be an armory. Surprisingly, I was right.

The walls were lined with weapons of all kinds. Swords, axes, spears, staff's, daggers, bows, maces, literally anything you can imagine. There were some tables with some other weird objects. However the one thing that stuck out to me was the sword on the far table. It was the same one I used against the Sin.

Yuki walked over to it and picked it up with one hand.

Yuki: "Picked it up after I got free from the rubble. Thought you may want to keep it"

She tossed it to me like she was throwing a pair of car keys. Luckily, I managed to catch it without cutting my fingers off.

Yuki: "Since you're here, I'm assuming you chose to have Combat as your specialty?"

Draco: "Yeah, but it's a little surprising to see you teaching. I thought you specialized in Elemental?"

Yuki: "Yeah, well, come on, who wants to specialize in Combat when you can go for other options like controlling the elements, manipulating holy energy, warping matter, or even just summoning creatures? No one, so there's no one in this place that specializes in Combat. Naturally, I'm the best Combat user, it being my secondary specialty. So I teach it. I mean, seriously, what idiot would specialize in Combat?"

Draco: "This idiot..."

She smiled and patted me on the shoulder.

Yuki: "Right, come on, let's make a fool out of you"

I followed her out of the armory and back onto the arena.

Yuki: "Okay, so today, class, I'm going to show you the power and might of the person who managed to overpower the Sin last week"

She spoke in a heavily sarcastic tone. She then drew her daggers and held them with a downward grip.

Yuki: "Hope you weren't too sick of being in bed, because I'll probably be sending you back"

I held my sword with both hands and held it towards her.

Draco: "What if I accidentally hurt you?"

She laughed a little.

Yuki: "Ha! That's cute"

She suddenly charged me. Before I could react, she swung her dagger diagonally. I was somehow fast enough to react and parry it with my sword. However that left me open to another attack. She swung her other dagger. I wouldn't be able to block it, so I tried to dodge. I just barely managed to avoid getting cut, however she didn't let up. She threw her dagger at me, which I was just barely able to block with the flat of my sword.

Draco: "Woah!! Take it easy! You could've killed me!"

Yuki: "Don't be such a baby! You won't die! It'll hurt like a bitch, but I won't let you die"

She tossed both of her weapons at me, however they were somewhat sloppy. They were slow enough for me to block with my sword, however during the time I was focused on the daggers, Yuki disappeared from sight.

Draco: "Where did—"

I was suddenly tripped from behind, making me land face first on the ground. While I was falling, however, I felt something wrap around my wrists, almost like a liquid. I quickly hardened and froze into ice, binding my hands behind my back. I then felt one of Yuki's heels press against the back of my head.

Yuki: "There you have it, class. Draco, the boy who saved us all"

She rubbed the heel on the back of my head.

Yuki: "Class dismissed, test on Friday, make sure to bring your protection gear tomorrow"

The other students left the room, leaving us alone.

Yuki: "That was fun"

Draco: "Yeah, loads of fun. Now, can you get your foot off my head?"

Yuki: "Oh, right, sorry"

She got off of me and the ice on my wrists melted immediately. I got up and rubbed the back of my head.

Draco: "What was that for?"

Yuki: "Felt like kicking your ass, it was on a whim, really"

Draco: "This is going to be fun..."

Yuki: "Don't worry, Nozomi already made me promise not to hurt you too bad"

I had to thank Nozomi later.

Draco: "So... what's this class?"

Yuki: "You basically just learn to fight. Don't get me wrong, having the others are probably much more helpful, but combat skills is something you always need. And as a bonus, you get weapons that are deadly to Demons, which you can then summon out of thin air and stuff like that"

Draco: "What do you mean?"

Yuki: "All of the weapons here are forged from Holy Steel and cooled in holy water, they're basically the best way to kill a Demon. They have their own variation, though. They have weapons forged from Blood Iron, cooled in the blood of the damned"

Draco: "Right..."

Yuki: "I know, I said that so casually. But when you've been here long enough, it becomes the norm"

She punched me in the arm.

Yuki: "What's your alternate specialty?"

Draco: "I was thinking Elemental"

Yuki: "Good choice, they're down the hall, to the right. I'll see you a dinner tonight"

Draco: "Alright, see you then"

I left the Combat training room, with a bunch of new bruises, and made my way to the elemental room.

When I got there, it was definitely different than the rest.

It was divided into four sections. In front of every door, was the name of an element. It went from left to right. Fire, Wind, Water, and Earth. I peeked into the rooms, first being fire.

The Fire room had a few people holding balls of hot red flames like baseballs. The Wind room had a few students forming gusts of wind and small tornadoes contained inside little jars. The Water room had some students swimming in a large pool, controlling the water around them to move faster. One even turned the water on their fingers to ice, tossing them at the wall like throwing knives. The Earth room was probably the most diverse. There was a few students working on some weird looking plants, making them grow and come to life, like animals. Another set was manipulating rocks into all kinds of shapes. In the far corner, I could see one student with gem stones circling around his hand.

I suddenly heard a voice from behind me.

???: "M-May I help you?"

I quickly turned around and saw a girl standing behind me.

She had a slight tan and long, dark brown hair. She wore a black t-shirt that went up to her elbows. On her hands, were black gloves that left her fingers exposed. She wore a grey hoodie around her waist and a grey scarf around her neck. She had dark grey stockings that went up to her knees. She had a black cap on her head and big circle glasses with a slight tint in them.

Draco: "Oh, yeah, sorry, I'm looking for the person in charge of this class"

She held her hands together and swayed awkwardly.

???: "I-I'm the one in charge of this class. M-My name is May"

I'm not going to lie, this girl was pretty cute. She had this kind of innocence you'd see in a young child.

Draco: "Nice to meet you, I was wondering if I could stick around for a bit. I want to have an element as my alternate specialty"

May: "O-Oh, right this way, then"

She nervously walked past me and I followed. She brought me into a separate room from the rest. It was a dark room with only a table and two chairs in it. She sat down in one and I sat down in the one right across from her. On the table, was a small orb, almost like a fortune teller would have.

May: "To determine what element you will learn, we need to figure out the element of your soul"

Draco: "What do you mean?"

May: "H-How should I explain this... Everyone's soul is a reflection of their personality. And each element resembles said personality. For example, those with a water element can be calm and gentle like a still pond, however they can also be wild and chaotic like a raging waterfall"

Draco: "You just described Yuki's whole personality"

May: "S-Sorry, that's probably not what you meant"

Draco: "No, it's what I meant. Thanks for clearing it up. Now what do I do?"

May: "Place your hand on the orb. The element you correspond with will appear inside. If it's fire, a raging fire will surge through the orb. If it's wind, the sky and clouds will form. If it's water, it will show the sea. And if it's earth, it will show some form of nature"

I placed both hands on the orb. At first, nothing happened.

Draco: "Is it supposed to do that?"

Suddenly, the inside of the orb started to spark, the inside looking like one of those plasma orbs. Purple lightning arched all around inside the orb.

Draco: "W-What does it mean?"

May: "I... I'm not sure. I've never seen this before"

She looked at me with concern.

May: "You should go see Arana, maybe she can answer the questions"

Suddenly, alarms started blaring throughout the building. I looked over at May, however she had vanished into thin air.

I ran out into the halls and saw all of the other exorcists rushing to the dining hall.

After arriving, I saw Yuki and everyone else had already sat down. I rushed over, and the second Nozomi saw me, she tackled me into a hug.

Nozomi: "Don't you ever scare me like that again!!"

She may look sweet and innocent on the outside, but she was seriously strong. I thought she was going to break my ribs.

She finally let go of me.

Alex: "Do you know what's going on?"

Draco: "No clue, maybe another Demon attack"

Alex: "I hope not"

Suddenly, Arana appeared on the large platform in the center of the dining hall. Without saying a word, Arana's presence made the whole dining hall go silent.

Arana: "I'm sorry to call you here so suddenly, however this matter is one we must discuss immediately"

She looked stressed and scared, which definitely didn't seem like her.

Arana: "After the events of this week, and other factors I have weighed tonight, I have determined that the great end time is upon us. Armageddon has arrived"
