Chapter Two: The Knights Comes
It was raining still. It felt like it was always raining outside. But that fact had always been true. The fairy lights in the office made it seem a lot less gloomy as it would be without them. Each one of the little lights lit up with green and red. Great care had been given in putting out the Christmas decorations around the office. Tiny Santas greeted the front windows and small reindeers. All of which hide many different awards and ribbons from the city. The center piece was the dwarf Christmas tree, which was covered over with ordainments and ribbons. Normally, the office kept itself to white walls and the two oak desks. But Miss Caroline made sure to bring up the spirits of the dull place when it came to this time of year. Miss Caroline was putting her finishing touches to the office by placing a few angels in the window. Her brilliant green dress worked well with her chocolate skin. She adjusted her cream scarf around her neck as studied the cheery display. Contently Miss Caroline smoothed out her raven cloud of hair. Miss Caroline was sure her Edwin would adore such a thing. She rested her gloved hands on her hips.
Miss Caroline turned back to the desks of the office. The name placards were on each of the identical desks. But the way each one differed was in their small details. The desk with the name Walus was spotless of any dust. All the files were neatly lined up in alphabetical order. A small framed picture of a young man in a fine robe sat on the desk. It was signed with the name Louis. Louis was such a good husband to Walus. She couldn't wait for Christmas where all the Knight Family would be together. Miss Caroline smiled as she passed Walus's desk and peered down at his calendar. Their last case had ended earlier in the morning. Their celebration had taken the majority of breakfast. Miss Caroline smirked it was not everyday that the Knight Brothers helped solved an international case. She placed down a gift on Walus's desk.
Over on the second desk, Edwin's name was a bit dull. Miss Caroline laughed and cleaned up the desk some and neatened up the files back into order. She chuckled over the small painting of a lizard from Edwin's nephew. It looked more like a strange noddle, but Dustin sure tried to do his best with his crayons. The number of fidget spinners cluttered up the rest of the desk. Miss Caroline shook her head and gathered them up. She gently put them back into his desk drawer with the rest of his odds and ends. Miss Caroline knew how Walus hated when Edwin left a mess about. It seemed like a miracle at time that the two brothers were able to work with each other.
Miss Caroline lingered at Edwin's desk as she slipped out a silver wrapped gift. She had spent a whole lot of time debating about what to get Edwin. But she was sure to leave it to the last moment. A great detective, well two great detectives, were hard to surprise with gifts. So Miss Caroline figured she would wait for them to get really distracted and then spring their gifts on them. This year there would be no early guesses or secretly finding out ahead of time. Miss Caroline giggled just a bit as she peered down at the gift. Suddenly the hologram phone rung from the lobby. Miss Caroline hurried from the offices and back to the front desk.
Her joyful sunflower toy danced about as Miss Caroline hurried along. She hovered her hand over her old fashion dial phone and the display came up. It glowed and the caller's number came up, but no image display came along with it. Miss Caroline would had have thought it ought. Many people nowadays would always have a display image, unless they had something to hide. But Miss Caroline had been working with the Knight Brothers long enough not to be bothered by such a fact. She had been through plenty of rich clients wanting to hide themselves. More disturbing were the death threats to the Knight Brothers. But none of those had come in the last several years since they found the Sunshine Killer.
Cheerfully Miss Caroline answered the line, "Hello, you have reached the Knight Detective Agency. How may I help you?"
The blank screen answered her black in a strange and fragmented voice. Miss Caroline knew very well a voice filter when she heard one. It went on in a deep voice, "I wish to hire the Knight Detectives for a case."
"I can take down your details for your request. The Knight Detectives are away from the office right now," Miss Caroline smiled warmly.
"I have a case which I am willing to pay a high amount for. But I will need them to come tonight to the Glass Slipper over in Old Town in order to get the details. Tell them to ask for Breathless," the voice said in a hurry.
"Okay," Miss Caroline wrote down the details as fast as she could. She paused, "Is there anything else you want me to tell them?"
"Tell them to hurry and now to believe anything they believe about Kid Marshal," It rushed away and the line disconnected.
Miss Caroline peered down at her note. The post it note was on a floral note with her perfect handwriting. She beamed at the note. Miss Caroline picked up her wrist and touched her digital implant. A screen popped up in her hand as Miss Caroline went down to her contacts. She found Edwin's name. She pressed down on it and it begun to dial. Edwin answered it. His imaged showed him tired and yawning. His white hair made him look refined with his couple of scars here and there. He was like a battered angel. Miss Caroline always enjoyed his honey eyes and retro sense of clothing. He looked just like an old timey detective from the old classical films. Edwin widely grinned and jumped at the sight of Miss Caroline. He flushed as he rumbly voice said, "Miss Caroline! So good to hear from you!"
"Hello Edwin!" Miss Caroline beamed.
"Oh brother, you know we are not due back until elven. Come on, Edwin, let's finish our pints and our food first before she tries to get us another case," Walus groaned from the other side.
Miss Caroline huffed a little, "You know just because I am good at managing to get you case! You know without me, Walus, you two would be out on the streets!"
Walus said, "Yes, Miss Caroline, the whole thing would fall apart without our secretary. Our trusty secretary who cleans up our coffee cups and answers our calls. We could just get a robot to do all of the work. But no that would not be personal enough-"
"Hush, Walus! You are clearly too tired from our last case," Edwin rolled his eyes at his brother, "How about I get you home to Louis now?"
"Blah, Miss Caroline is only around for . . ." Walus yawned and went silent.
He turned his attention back to Miss Caroline, "Forgive him. He is still upset about being shot in the arm. It is making him cranky."
"I will say," Miss Caroline laughed.
"What can I do for you this morning, darling? Everything okay?" Edwin said sweetly.
"Oh yes! Everything here is great! I just came in a little early to get the coffee going. Congratulations once again on solving the case! I cannot wait to celebrate together when you get here!"
"Darling, I cannot wait to see you again. Ow-" Edwin paused and turned to his side, "Quit it, Walus!"
"Just get off the line already!"
Edwin shook his head, "Now, Walus-"
"You will have Miss Caroline all to yourself later tonight. If she doesn't work her to get us another case!" Walus moaned.
"Why I have never seen a detective not want to solve cases in all my life!" Miss Caroline crossed her arms, "It sounds like you want to quit Mr. Knight."
"Blah," Walus groaned, "Right now we got business here! It took us weeks to get through the case! I want a good drink and a quiet breakfast. Then I want to go home to my husband. I want to get him and-"
"Walus, the medicine is taking you crude. Just let us pay the bill and get you some rest. I think you just need some time to relax. I mean six weeks undercover as a gang member," Edwin said.
Miss Caroline remembered her reason for calling, "Mr. Knight! Mr. Knight! I have a message for-"
"A good luck charm that Miss Caroline. We have been up into our pits with case since two years ago. I remember the good old days where we were almost out on our lease and we lived day to day with our broke asses," Walus sighed.
"Hush now, Walus! I need to finish speaking with Miss Caroline," Edwin laughed and returned his attention to her, "Miss Caroline, you were saying."
"I have had a mysterious called with a voice filter call for you two. They want to meet you tonight at the Glass Slipper. They said to ask for Breathless. Also, they said not to believe everything that you read about Kid Marshal in the papers," Miss Caroline read from her notepad.
"Hmm, I see. I will be in the next hour to see to the details. Miss Caroline I will need to drop off Walus. He seems to need a break," Edwin smiled, "I will see you in a bit, darling. You will see my brother in a few more hours."
"I bet Louis will have his hands full with him," Miss Caroline laughed.
"Always," Edwin smirked, "See you soon."
"See you soon," Miss Caroline waved and hung up on him.
