Chapter Twenty-Six: Endgame
As the music swells within the opera hall. The curtain full rises on what would be considered the best opera in Watts City history. The audience is glued to their seats, despite the Chief of Police wandering through the rows. Chief Vicky listens to the incoming messages from the bug the police planted in box six. Walus had been right about something fishy going on the mayor candidate and Mr. Parallax. She would have to bear that all mind for further leads. Chief Vicky flashes her eyes to the far side of the opera house. She could not miss the outline of Walus Knight.
"Chief, you heard the man we can't get the civilians out," an office say over the channel of the earpiece.
"I know, George," Chief Vicky pauses, "Walus, can your brother disable it?"
Walus answers, "He will need to get access to the opera security system. I would say it would take him a while to get the hook up to disable it."
George chimes in, "Do you think we could sneak the audience out, Chief?"
"We have well over 400 people here tonight, George. I doubt we can get them to sneakily leave in a quiet and orderly fashion," Walus answers.
George begins, "We just need to make sure the orchestra and the singers keep going. I think if we just flash the theater lights-
"Listen, I trust Walus. So everyone move out. We need to find the source of the device," Chief Vicky holds her earpiece close to her. The Watts City Police officers fan out in the opera house with an eye out for the device. Chief Vicky as she directs the officers, "Team A go and search the upper floors. Team B you are with me. C Team with the head detective. Walus get your brother on the line and do your guys thing."
"Will do, Chief," Walus's voice comes in crystal clear as Walus waves her off. His outline disappears into the shadows.
Chief Vicky watches as the four officers of Team B scan the room with her. She slips on her goggles and searches for signs of any strange nano-technology. Her men drift along with great care among the opera guests. Meanwhile, Walus turns on his heel to face the lobby of the opera house. He pulls up his Palm Planner and contacts Edwin. His swift feet find his way back to the stage backstage doors. Impatiently, Walus curses to himself, "Edwin answer your god damn phone!"
"Do you need help locating the girl? Or the dawning realization they tested it on me, too?" Edwin coldly answers the video was off and they are left on a traditional phone call.
"We have a serious situation here, Edwin. I don't have time for you to be mad at me for anything else. That creep Mr. Parallax has planted a device-"
Edwin sigh, "Has found a way to adjust my technology with mods to more past mere suggestion. I would say he created mind control over sound frequency by attacking the listeners' nervous system through their Palm Planner."
"Hmm, you can tell me about your theory when I get back," Walus nods as he pushes the door open. He slides out a set of techno-goggles as he leans against the door. He looks around and sees no outside signs of illegal items. He hovers his hand on a hidden gun in his belt.
"I haven't made a pact yet for the virus that is . . er. . . in your computer. I have sent Miss Caroline over to have coffee with Louis," Edwin answers.
"We need to find a way to stop him without interrupting the show as it will cause the device to go off earlier."
Edwin pauses with consideration, "Ah, a failsafe. Whoever Rivera and Mr. Parallax are working with move quickly. . . I could possibly crack into the opera's house security cameras and do a scan."
"Can you really do it from this range? Or do you need to get remotely over there?"
"I will have to manage from here. Your friends in black have yet to leave your house. Louis invited them to stay on longer."
Walus says, "Edwin, stay in the study away from them. Just stay out of their way and don't say anything to them."
"We have a lot to discuss when you get back."
"I know."
"When we finish this case you will help me find the girl from my memory-"
"Edwin focus on here and now. We will deal with that as it comes," Walus scans the back hallways of the dressing room. He sees the familiar shape of Igor waiting with the stagehands. Walus tells Edwin, "I gonna go for now. Keep me posted on what you find."
"Later Walus," Edwin bitterly hangs up.
Igor rapidly approaches while twisting his hands nervously together. The barkeeper whispers to Walus, "There have been police officers wandering back here. Have you found the problem?"
"Igor, I will need you to remain calm. Keep on an eye on Miss Breathless. Do not let any stop her from singing until I or one of the police officers give the all clear. There is a major problem here in the opera house. We are searching for a device that uses sound, Mr. Parallax setup to endanger all the people. Do you have any ideas of where it might be?"
"I might have an idea where Mr. Parallax would put it. Have you checked the sound system yet? Or the back in Miss Breathless's room?" Igor asks.
"I will tell the other officers to be on the lookout. I will keep searching," Walus put his hand on Igor's shoulder, "Stay here and wait over her."
"I will always be here at the service of, Miss Breathless. You can count on me," Igor nods.
The opera swells with its instrumental music and the vocals of the other singers starts. Walus slips on his other earpiece as he contacts Chief Vicky, "I have managed to get some tips. Edwin will be scanning the building shortly. Be sure to check the sound system and near box six."
"Copy that," Chief Vicky answers.
Walus goes his scanner away from Igor. The bartender continues to linger at the wings of the backstage. Walus turns away towards the dressing rooms in search of the terrible device. A few of the stagehands leer at Walus as he stops by them. They fidget oddly as Walus holds his scanner and listens to the chatter over his earpiece. A few of them disappear from their spots in by the ropes and hurry over to the shadow. Walus narrows his eyes as another call comes in.
In a hushed voice, Edwin remarks, "I got the connect to the opera house. But getting to the cameras is becoming a real pain remotely. Can you ask Chief Vicky to give me direct access? You know that without some type of sound jamming item you and the police and everyone else will be sitting ducks, right?"
"Do you have something planned?" Walus creeps forward to where the stagehands had been.
"I can use the PA system to counter act it was a sound high pitch. It would only be able to last for a few seconds at the most as it would overload the system."
"And the virus or device?" Walus picks up his gun from his side and goes to the shadows. The shuffling of the stagehands are quick. They start to charge at Walus with their fists. The detective swiftly knocks a few out with the butt of his gun.
Edwin calmly continues, "You would have to break it physically yourself. I can only do so much from here."
"Let me call you back," Walus hangs up on his brother. The remaining four evildoers lurk in the shadows of the backstage. Walus combats them with his gun and his fist. They manage to grapple Walus and make him wince in from his broken arm. He drops his gun and swiftly kicks his attackers. With only one left standing, Walus stares him down. He tries to flee as Walus grabs a stage prop and throws it at his head.
Once the last one is down, Walus ties them up and reports them to the chief. He returns his last call, "Edwin?"
"I am here," Edwin whispers.
"Everything okay with you?"
"Peachy," Edwin pauses, "I got the location of the device. But I don't know if you will be able to get to it."
"Where is it?"
"It is Breathless."
"What?"
"From what I can make out all of Breathless is the device. You will have to pinpoint it further in person. As far as I can tell the device has spread into her nano-tech. So, you will have to stun her," Edwin ruffles some papers and sighs, "If you can bring her over to me, then I can fix her up."
"Can't you make a patch or something?"
"As long as I am over here no. Now hurry you don't have much time," Edwin hangs up again.
Walus runs back over the wings of the stage. Breathless has begun to sing her own aria. The detective searches his belt and pulls out a stun gun. He peers over at Igor who give him a dark look. Walus rushes the stage with the stun gun and set it to the singer. She goes down with a shriek as a deafening sound blasts across the PA. Walus knocks out Breathless just as a bullets shoots over his head. Poor Breathless lays stun on the floor as a device on from her engagement ring shorts out. Walus grabs it and contacts Chief Vicky.
