Chapter Twenty-One

Normally the meetings Butch and Jimmy had with the Boss were held by video calls. But Jimmy seemed to have gotten on the good side of the Boss. Today they had been called into the Boss's office. Jimmy worried about the girl and their plan. But he would have to do his best to follow his idea. Jimmy just hoped he was brighter than the Boss and Jimmy. The bots were busy getting ready for the next safe house for them to go to. Now Jimmy and Butch were busy making their way to the meeting room. Butch fixed himself up smart with his best suit. Jimmy mixed with guilt and stress looked like a sweating mess. Butch stopped mid-way to the Boss's office and turned to Jimmy, "You okay, buddy? You look ill."

"It has been a long time since we meet with the Boss is all. I normally just has to wait for you to come back with the ideas. The Boss normally don't like talking to the likes of people like me," Jimmy wiped the sweat from his head.

Butch grinned at his partner, "You will be fine. I have been telling the boss all the swell thing you have been up too. I cannot think of anyone else who would handle things better."

"Ah, thanks Butch," Jimmy brightened up some.

"Now, keep your chin up and remember to breath. The Boss may seem terrible and arty-farty. But he's got good means of business," Butch nodded.

"Say Butch when we talk to the Boss, we did establish we don't hurt kids like her. Right?"

Butch sighed and patted his shoulder, "Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy. I told you. We are not bad guys. We just do what we need to do. Now you like our mission statement, right?"

"We will protect the environment at all costs," Jimmy muttered.

"Yes, we don't just bloody hug trees. We get in there with our guns and make sure we can protect all those little critters and plants we love. You love all them animals and plants, right Jimmy?" Butch punched his arm lightly.

"I do, Butch. I just have been thinking-"

"No, no my buddy. You don't get paid to think," Butch patted his arm, "You get paid to shoot and do what I say."

"But it isn't right beating up girls. Ma said I was supposed to be good and follow through with being a gentleman. The last assignment with Olivia, it wasn't right," Jimmy slumped his shoulder and lowered his head.

"Olivia was not a good person, Jimmy. She used Teddy to find us. She betrayed her friend to just get a story. No, Olivia got what she got because she earned it. Don't worry about the other girl. Kid will be fine. You have seen the Boss take good care of her. She will be fine," Jimmy patted his arm, "Come on. We have work we need to do. The Boss is waiting after all."

"Yea, Butch," Jimmy nodded his head somberly as they continued down to the Boss's office.

The whole place was not as grand at the guest bedroom that Kid had been trapped in. No the Boss made the rest of his house more understated. It was a simple place of white tan hallways and clean edges. The paintings on the walls were of landscapes done with great care. Butch and Jimmy turned to a door with a golden handle. Butch went to open the door right away as Jimmy took a deep breath behind in.

The office was light and airy with its large window. It was not set to the grand cityscape below of Watts City glimmering with all of its nighttime glory. All the neon signs shimmered between the rain droplets. Nor did the Boss allow for the view of all the endless rain to seen one bit. Instead there was an image on display in the window from the holo-screen. It was a grand image of Watts City before Watts City. It was a large forest with towering redwood trees. The sound of the birds that use to live in Watts City filled the office. A tablet rested on the Boss's table with the blueprints of the city and all the nature reserves. The Boss was turned away from the entrance and faced the holo-screen.

Jimmy looked around the room and saw the Boss had redone the place since his last visit. The bookshelves were perused and covered with old books. There were famed parts of plants labeled and left on the fall. Jimmy tried to not stare at the art the Boss had selected to display. All the reused bits of soda cans and bicycles were hard not to acknowledge. Jimmy jumped a little as the Boss spoke in his power voice, "Boys, good to see you again. How are you?"

Butch grinned and answered right away, "We are good boss. Really good."

"How is our guest doing? Has she been well? No complaints?" the Boss's said from his large chair.

"She hasn't said a thing Boss," Jimmy answered right away.

"Good, good," the Boss waved his hand. The light from the screen casted the Boss in shadow. He really did love his flare for the dramatic. The Boss went on, "I would hate for anyone to be unhappy when they are a guest here in my house."

Butch smiled, "You wanted to talk with us, Boss?"

"Yes, Butch, I did," the Boss rocked back and forth in his chair, "Boys the last job you did with Olivia seemed to have been a bit much. Did you too not realize that she was an important person to the community?"

"Yea, Boss, I told Butch she was an heiress. But Butch said-"

"Hush, Jimmy," Butch hissed as he laughed, "Now, Boss, you know we followed your directions. I have been working on setting up the cops and that one detective you said to use."

"Butch, did I say to slice the girl up to pieces?"

"Well, no Boss, you said to get rid of her in an artistic way. I thought it would be something if-"

"No, Butch, it was not something. You made a butcher out of what could have been a nice and neat kill. You could have made it look like an accident," the Boss sighed.

"But Boss-"

"No, Butch. I don't want buts," the Boss sighed, "Jimmy do you think this whole situation about the media coverage and the girl's death is good for our purposes?"

Jimmy thought really hard about everything he had been hearing. There was not a lot to do with the environment. It all had to do with the death and the missing girl. He knew something to do with a mayor. Jimmy said, "No, Boss."

"Why is that Jimmy?"

"We haven't done anything to save to the environment, Boss," Jimmy said slowly. He bit his lip and quietly found his eyes on the floor. Jimmy's voice dropped to a whisper, "We just killed a girl and took another."

Butch's eyes widened in disbelief, "We have done plenty to save the environment! By doing what we have done we have managed to-"

"Butch, let the man speak," the Boss said coolly. The Boss rocked in his chair and placed his hands on his arm rest. He rolled one hand, "Jimmy, my boy, you are saying we haven't gone and done anything to save the environment. Is what you are saying, Jimmy? Are actions are hollow and counterproductive to our whole mission state."

Jimmy swallowed and put his foot down, "Yes, Boss, I think all our kidnapping and killing rich girls has nothing to do with protecting the Earth."

"You are paid to follow the Boss's word-" Butch was cut off as the Boss stood up.

"I want you to look at something. Just look," His shadowy outline was highlighted by the holo-screen. His tall figure loomed over Butch and Jimmy. He stared right ahead at the holo-screen filled of lovely forest and nature sounds. The Boss snapped his fingers and said, "Macy, turn off the holo-screen and return to the normal window."

The automatic assistant chimed, "Right away, Boss. I am happy to help!"

The holo-screen disappeared from the window. It returned to the view of Watts City in all of its neon glory. All the skyscrapers took up the horizon as the rain continued to pour down on the window. The Boss sighed heavily as he peered out at the city on its many adds. He lifted a heavy finger out the skyline. There were no stars in the sky, just all the false ones on the ground. All the hover cars buzzing about in their chaos. The Boss frowned as he stood near the city lights.

Jimmy rubbed the back of his head as he peered out the city. It looked normal. Sure it was not forest screen or anything. But it was a city what was to be expected. Jimmy shrugged and said, "I don't see anything weird, Boss. It looks like it does normally."

The Boss placed his hands behind his back and shook his head. He puffed up his chest as he stared at the city. It was around then that Butch nudged Jimmy's arm. It was not for several more moments that Jimmy realized his answer was wrong. The Boss spoke, "Boys, what we have out here is not normal. It is a sign of the sin of humanity. This place was once a wonderful forest. It didn't rain here everyday like it does now. The whole area once was grand and beautiful. Do you know how it got like this, Jimmy?"

"Well, you just blamed humanity, Boss."

"Good you listened to me," the Boss nodded his head, "Yes, we have made ourselves comfortable by robbing the plant. We use our technology to make ourselves happy. I commit to this sin too. I made my office in this once beautiful place. I use bots to help around the office. I have my own Palm Planner. I use everything around me that makes my life easier. You do too, right Jimmy?"

"I suppose, Boss," Jimmy turned to Butch. His partner simply shook his head.

The Boss drummed his fingers together for a moment. His voice was firm, "I will not make us out to be heroes here, Jimmy. No, we are not some noble group of men. The work of the Origination is one of a mediator between sides. We are interested in doing what is best for humanity and the environment."

"Boss-" Jimmy begun.

But the Boss went on, "I am sure there are people who could argue about the importance of trying to restore everything back how it once was. But we are not in a magical fantasyland. Oh I wish I had to the knowledge to simply get rid of the whole city and restore it all back. Why in my vaguest memories I can recall when the sun was here more. But weather patterns changed with human influence. It is terrible. . . So terrible . . . If only they had left it all alone. The forest would have still been here."

"Boss?" Jimmy said.

The Boss sighed, "So we have to crack a few heads and bury a few guys to keep the nature reserves. We get our hands bloody to get what we need to ensure things go the way we want. I just think we keep the damages to minimum where we can. It is a reasonable request when we got business to conduct. Right, Butch?"

"Yes, Boss," Butch stiffened up.

"What's her name. . . The girl you snuffed, Olivia. You two did her in for her knowledge about Kid. She needed to be done with her. I do not approve of the methods for cover up. It was suppose to be quick, boys. Quick and quiet," the Boss paced.

Butch took the lead, "Well, Boss. I knew her death would be important to influence the rate of the mayoral race and the Top Idol search. We managed to pull attention over to the docks. People have been talking about it."

"Boys, tell me, what do the docks have to do with the reserves outside of the city?" the Boss sighed.

Jimmy dimly guessed, "Nothing?"

"Hmmm. . ." the Boss waited for a better answer.

"It means since they are taking about the state of the docks, the got to see the waterways. They have to notice how . . . Er. . . Polluted the waters are. The death of the cop helped show how the state of the police force is corrupted," Butch offered.

"No, boys, I thought you knew what you were doing. You had taken Olivia out because she wanted to take Kid's project. She couldn't be a loose end. The girl, Kid, knew about our plans to blackmail both Top Idol and her own family the Marshals. Kid must have realized what we were doing," the Boss took his seat back in his chair.

"Really, Boss!?" Jimmy dropped his jaw.

"My boy, no. Not one bit. I didn't call you both here so I can explain my plans to you both," the Boss laughed. Both Jimmy and Butch joined him in his laughter. Jimmy feeling more and more lost as they carried on. The Boss as last said, "I wanted to really say that you did a fine job with getting rid of Olivia. Now, I have told you told that I don't want my guest hurt even one bit. No, I want you both to keep Miss Kid Marshal perfectly unharmed. We will be returning her shortly back to her family. We just need to clear her mind."

"What do you mean, Boss? We sending her on vacation or something?" Jimmy asked.

The Boss laughed very hard, "Jimmy, you are always good for a laugh. Yea, we are going to make the girl go on holiday. She will never have another worry in the world."

"How are you going to do that Boss?"

"Jimmy, you are asking too many questions!" Butch punched his arm.

Jimmy recoiled and rubbed his arm.

The Boss chuckled, "He is fine, Butch to ask all he wants and more. He won't put it all together. We both know how Jimmy is."

"Boss, I don't know. Jimmy seemed to have been getting ideas lately," Butch muttered.

The Boss turned slightly in is chair, "Butch. . . Jimmy follows my orders. He is fully aware that I watch your guys every move. We don't have camera about for no reason."

"Yeah, Boss. . ." Jimmy answered quietly.

Butch groaned, "It would be faster to just kill her."

"Now, now, I don't want the girl dead. She is too important," the Boss waved his hand, "We are going to get the girl and wipe her memories of everything. A new technology from our friends we have made. They promised nothing of this whole affair will remain in her mind."

"But is it safe, Boss? What if something goes wrong?" Jimmy started to sweat.

"The first test subjects didn't do too well," the Boss sighed, "But I heard the second subject will do much better. No this girl is very important to our friends who are paying for her once we are done with her."

"Boss, we have never been into trafficking before," Jimmy frowned.

"You won't have to worry about it, Jimmy," the Boss seemed to grin in the darkness, "We are putting her right back with her family. It is a win-win for everyone. Everyone but one person here."

The Boss sighed, "I am going to miss you, Jimmy. But I don't think you will remember that."

With that the Boss pressed a button and a trapdoor opened up. It took Jimmy away and it shut tight without Jimmy even saying a word. Butch stood stiffly to the side and tried not to reveal any emotion about his partner. He stood looking right ahead at the Boss and his tall chair. The Boss pressed another button and the holo-screen turned back with the imagery of the forest back on. The Boss said to Butch, "You have done fine Butch with the girl. I will have Jimmy back to you once we test out the memory ease on him. Should he live and be good, I will have him back to you. I mean he survived the first time."

"Okay, Boss," Butch nodded.

"Now get out of here before I decided I need another subject," the Boss chuckled.

Butch left the room with his heart in the pit of his stomach. Hopefully, Jimmy would recover like he did the first few times. Nightfall had come and went. It had been nice over in the Boss's hotel. The girl was being quiet and untouched just like the Boss wanted. They nearly had everything they needed from her. Butch knew very well the next steps of what to do with the girl since it was clear. A mind wipe was not the first thing he would have gone to blank out the memories of the girl. He personally thought a good grave and a gunshot could cure the mess. But his ideas were not the Boss's. Butch smirked at the coming sunrise, he got a ding that Jimmy would be fine in a few more hours. He exhaled in relief.

Butch held his coffee in hand as he allowed for the news to continue to play. The girl sat still in her robe as she was propped up with pillows. He clicked it over to the latest coverage about the missing girl and the murder. It didn't last very long about the report. Butch called out to Kid, "No new leads. Cop dead. They aren't doing good, huh? I would say we did a bang-up job of hiding our tracks. It looks like they hired some detectives to come looking for you."

The girl's face was stone cold. Her chest barely moved as she sat in the bed. Butch walked around the large bed and looked at the clock. The pills were on the counter next to the water. Butch yawned as he peered down at them and then the girl's exposed arm. Her chip had been modified by the Boss. It glowed an angry red under her skin. Butch stretched out, "Eh, girly, it is almost time for your meds. I think soon you might even frame some thought in your head. Don't worry girly, the Boss is almost done with you."

Kid's fingers moved ever so slightly. Butch then laughed and waved the small knife in his hand. He smirked over at Kid as her eyes stated to move. Butch shook his head at Kid, "You will have to sit tight. My friend, Jimmy, won't be able to help you. No sense in leaving until the Boss is finished. Now sit tight the nurse bot will be here to deal with you. I will be waiting around here with you."

Kid eyes narrowed at him as he chuckled. The nurse bot has arrived at the was ready to start the administration of drugs. Butch got up with his coffee as the nurse bot picked up the drugs from the side table. Butch pulled up a message from the Boss. The Boss had sent them opera tickets and orders to meet Rivera Marshal. Butch drank his coffee even slower as he read the second bit on the note about the opera. He turned back to meet Kid's eyes and he chuckled to himself, "So it would seem your little friend will be starting in a show. I cannot wait to meet her face to face."
