Chapter Twenty
Walus left the Glass Slipper in a timely fashion after he spoke with Igor. He needed to head back to his office. Soon the video chat for the police update would begin. Walus again fixed the sling for his arm and made his way over to the hover cab hail. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. The Dark Shadow meeting would be in a few more hours. In a few more hours Edwin would either be out on bail or release. It still didn't look good with the missing officers and everything else. Walus opened his eyes and saw the hover cab had touched down. He got over to it and got it.
Walus watched at the Glass Slipper went away. He leaned his head back on the seat. The false information from Breathless was not settled in fact. The findings from Kid's room were still coming in. Edwin's progress on the data restoration were coming at halfway mark. Walus listened to the insistent rain coming down on the cap as they rolled along to the next stop of the office.
He paid his fee again and hopped off at the office. Walus sighed as he saw the police officers at the door instead of the doorman bot. Ah, now to have an audience for all he wanted was a place to think. He ought to have headed over to his apartment. But it was too late he had come here and everyone else was around too. Walus flashed his badge and headed into as the officers stepped ahead. Walus shook his head and headed over to his own space.
Yes, the lobby was in as bad of shape as Edwin reported. The police tape was still about and officers were all about the place. Leave Chief Vicky and Detective Scott to leave nothing unturned. Walus went in as the other officers were busy taking photos and discussing how it had all been done. Walus paused as he passed the front desk. Ah, the Dark Shadow has been here before the attackers. He could tell it was two separate events just by the sheer level of attack of the place.
The Dark Shadow would have left very little traces. But here, well the person left a huge mess. Walus continued into the back room where three more officers were about and checking out Edwin's desk. Walus puffed out his cheeks as he saw the level of damaged to everything here. Miss Caroline's hard work was now lost. Walus paused as he saw Miss Caroline's gift to Edwin on the floor. His cheeks were rosy in embarrassment and he turned to his own desk. The strangest bit was it was left untouched as the other had told him it had been.
Walus carefully looked at his desk among the chaos. The Dark Shadows had messed with things only a small bit. But the rest was the handy work of a person who like flare and puzzles. It was clear that the person wanted to make a statement. But why not touch his desk? Why leave the rest of the place a mess, but not his space. Walus walked through the chaos and coughed to the other officers, "Would you please mind leaving for a bit? I need to think here."
The other officers nodded and left the door with hushed whispers. Walus listened to the door closed as pulled out his evidence file. He paced about the clear space in the room. So far they had the missing cops who were last seen at the station itself. They were going to report over to a meeting. Yankee was supposed to have been on route to go about traffic duty. Yankee's body had been found in the bombing. The report of the body confirmed it was him from his dental records. But the rest of the remains were too burnt to get a reading from. The video tapes had been clearly messed with from the docks. Walus scrolled through the notes again. He was missing what Miss Caroline had been recording. The Dark Shadows had a hand in matters here.
Walus turned back to his ruined office. He was still missing the reports about Teddy, Olivia's boy. No one had found him yet. Walus lifted up a broken Santa with his foot. He still had the false stories from Breathless and now the information about Mr. Parallax. The report about girl having an arguments. Walus thought over to himself, Who would benefit in putting Edwin out like this? I know the Dark Shadows didn't want me on the case. Yet here we are with me being brought in further. Why?
The media coverage had not gotten full wind of Edwin's role yet. Yankee's death was still overshadowed by the whole missing heiress angle and the mayoral race. Now to mention the whole upcoming season of Top Idol. There was the chance of Mr. Parallax being at the center. But it was hard to say it was his doing alone. Walus closed his eyes and heard a ding. They had found a chip hidden in the girl's room. It was the piece of information that Walus needed.
