Chapter Nine
Jimmy leaned against the wall and sighed. To say he was ugly would have been too kind to describe the face of Jimmy Orangelo. His noise was crooked and hook like. One of his eyes was messing from a fight long since passed. An artificial eye rested in its place now. If Jimmy tried to smile, he would look like he was frowning. Jimmy cobalt eyes flashed back over at the girl. He adjusted his fedora and bushed off his forest green coat of dust. His leather shoes still had dirt on them from the late-night business. Jimmy checked his gun as he reflected on the night's happenings.
She was still pale in her face and blankly looked ahead She had been dumb since she had been stuck on the head. The doc said the girl was suffering from a concussion and would take time to recover. Or maybe it was the drugs that the doc gave her. Nasty things head injuries and drugs. Or even grimmer they might have hacked her nano-tech. Messy business right there. A very dangerous art in messing with someone's nano-tech and their brain. It made Jimmy sick thinking about all the things it could do to a person. But Jimmy wasn't paid for his thoughts.
Butch was paid to think of solutions. The Boss wanted the girl alive and intact. She was intact alright and mostly untouched when they brought her over. But now the girl was trapped in this stupor. The Boss said to keep her quiet and comfortable. She accepted things no better than a bot. The Boss made the orders. The girl was to be put in a gilded cage. Not a literal one. But a nice room with a good view and hard to escape from.
Butch got the girl fine silk robes. She had been easy enough to care for. Kid just sat in her bed of cotton sheets and stood still. Now Jimmy had babysitting to do. The business with Olivia had been just business. The Boss had had enough with the dame anyways. Jimmy took out his gun scanned the stiff girl. Kid had a bandage around her wrist. They had removed her Palm Planner. Bandages covered over her arm. Jimmy shook his head, It is better than what the other girl got in the end.
Jimmy raised an eye brow as he almost thought the girl was dead. But her breathing was very swallow and still. Her face didn't look too hot either. She was ashen and she had sweat forming on her forehead. Jimmy was about to get closer when he heard the door. Butch rubbed his arm as he passed into the door. His red hair was wild as he popped up his collar shirt. He dusted off his sleeves as he toyed with a toothpick in his mouth. Butch stood still as the door slide shut behind him. He pointed to Jimmy, "How is our guest?"
"Well, Butch, she doesn't look good. She looks sick. Should we call a doctor or something?"
"No, the Boss said we should have expected this result. Now I would say leave her like this until later point. I will call the Boss with an update."
" . . . Umm . . . About the other girl. . . I was thinking. . ."
"Listen Jimmy, I have the thoughts around here. We listen to the Boss. You listen to me. There ain't nothing else to deal with here," Butch smiled and scanned the room, "Besides don't worry about the girl. She is favored by the Boos. He won't let anything happened to her."
"But the other girl . . . You were going out with her and then you shot her up," Butch said fiddled around with his fingers.
"I won't lie to you. We do our business here. We have been doing this business for a long time. There is nothing to think about. Butch, don't tell me you are going soft on me," Jimmy grabbed his arm and stared at Butch.
"But I just thought-"
"You are payed to use your muscle. I do the thinking. Now, Butch, don't make me rough you up. You have made the Boss happy. We get paid. You go soft and you're on holiday with Vinci," Jimmy grabbed hard on Butch.
Butch whimpered, "I don't want to end up like Vinci!"
"Then do what I tell you. Watch the girl. Keep it classy. Nothing more, nothing less," Jimmy smiled and let go.
"Yes, Jimmy," Butch rubbed on his arm.
Jimmy nodded and went out the room. He left behind his slow friend and walked down a rich hallway. Jimmy opened a hologram call to the Boss and the door shut and the alarm armed itself. Jimmy waited as the line picked up. The Boss sat in the shadow as the line answered. The Boss's messages appeared in texts down below. It scrolled out, Hello Jimmy. How is my guest doing?
Jimmy grinned, "It is all fine here, Boss. No problems."
I am unhappy with the status of your assignment. You didn't follow my instructions.
"Yes, Boss. I am very sorry for what happened with Olivia. I know you wanted it to be neater. But we have been working on making it all closed up. We got the media covered up and it seems to be taking."
Don't leave any loose ends. I want my guest to be kept well until we have what we need. The you can carry on with the next phrase.
"Yes, Boss. We took of Olivia. She will be no longer will be a problem. I will get it done without any further delays."
Right. Be sure to move the girl soon. I have a feeling someone is going to start looking for her soon. I don't want her to be had. We need her. The decoding program should be doing the trick on her file.
"Yes, sir!"
Don't disappointment me, Jimmy.
The Boss hung up and the screen went down. Jimmy nodded as he headed down the hall to see to the next part of the plan.
