Chapter Fifteen
The debriefing room was one of the rare places in Watts City that the turns were turned down. It was not thought wise to make the whole force of rainbow hues. Instead someone had been sensible and put Earth tones in the place. The desks were even just normal wooden desk, nothing too outrageous as was the fashion. The shades were half-shut as the shark of reports hovered back outside of the office. The same sensible person who clearly lacked any lick of design ensured that all of the office furnishings were dull and practical. Walus would have not forgive such a lack of interior design, if he had not more urgent things to worry about.
Walus moved around in his uncomfortable chair. He sat impatiently as he waited for the debriefing to begin. He had received no further notices from Miss Caroline or Edwin. He scanned outside of the rest of the police station was a buzz. He lifted an eyebrow as Chief Vicky rushed into the room. Her voice thundering about to the other officers to fall in. She marches in with Detective Scott calmly following along with a cup of coffee. The other officers come at last to their spots and find their seats. It was a loud mess of officers hurrying to their spots and board on each wall. Walus kept his Palm Planner closed with the forward information from Edwin and Miss Caroline. He had been hired now and he would wait to present what he had to give them.
Chief Vicky's navy uniform was ironed well and if it weren't for the dampness of the rain, she would be the ideal of a chief. She came to the front and peered out at the whole room. The officers came to attention as Chief Vicky up her hands on her hips. She ran her hand over her face and declared, "We are all here now, right?"
Everyone nodded.
"Good, we have a fucking mess here. I am not going to lie about the happenings of the last twenty four hours. We have one kidnapped girl, Kid Marshal, and one dead one Olivia Wilson. Both heiresses to fabulously rich and powerful people. Kid Marshal is the daughter of the well know Solo Marshal, King of Hot Sauce. Less known about Kid Marshal is her connection of the mayor of our fair town. Olivia Wilson, daughter of the Wilson Company fortune, was found murdered," Chief Vicky closed her eyes as she pointed to the images, "The last known location of the victims was at the University of Manchester and Barden at the student dorms at a party. The time of their last known location was 6:00 P.M. They were in the company of their friends Raja Timothy Hopkins and Peppermint Sunshine."
Detective Scott moved forward to reveal the details. He coughed as he put down his coffee and took out his pen. He pointed to the image, "As you can see from the photos. The victim's body was cut in such a way similar to the Black Dalia. The attention of the stab wounds are in the craving here along the torso. But you will note that the victim was dressed up in unusual clothing for our area. Not to mention a whole different time period. It can be referred back to the 1920s. The motivation of the murder at this time is unknown."
Chief Vicky peered over to Walus as she shuffled through her notes from her pockets. She pointed the image of the docks, "She was found this morning by a warehouse bot on the side of the building. We estimate the time of death was yesterday at 8:00 A.M. There were signs of a struggle in the area-"
Walus shook his head as the chief went on about the evidence at the scene of the crime. He heard his brother's name and listened. There was no way this was a framing. His fingerprints were everywhere. He had left strains of hair behind. They camera were recording the whole thing. Edwin had been with him on an international flight yesterday morning. They had only made it into Watts City proper after 10:00 A.M. There was no way for Edwin to have ducked out at any point as with was an eight-hour trip. It was a strong alibi as they had dozens of witnesses and receipts. There was a whole reward ceremony for their last case. It made international headlines.
Walus rubbed his head as he allowed them to continue to go on about the evidence. The detective put his hands together. He had the conflicting report from his brother's private client. She would be able to start bring to attention how crazy it sounded. If not for the fact that it was clearly a set up. Walus adjusted his sling again.
"We have officers on the ground questioning the girls' families and friends. We have gotten warrants to check out their dorm rooms for further evidence," Chief Vicky turned to everyone, "We need to find the killer. But we first and foremost must find Kid Marshal and bring her back alive. Now I will have Detective Walus Knight come and enlighten us of his latest findings."
Walus stood up with the case file that Edwin and Miss Caroline had sent him. He had it on his holos-screne. The problem was the file started to glitch as Walus held it in his hand. The whole images flickered in and out. Walus stopped as the other officers watched problems. Walus closed his hand as the image shut down. He turned to face everyone. Walus would have to worked with what he skimmed from the notes. Walus begun with, "I had evidence to submit to the case. But it seems my data is corrupt at this time. I will be consulting with Edwin Knight and our sectary, Caroline. They will have the hard copies. Since I have been brought in a hurry, I am afraid I am not fully prepared for presenting a full briefing."
Walus coughed, "I have knowledge that my brother, Edwin Knight, is working on the missing person's case for Kid Marshal since yesterday. He had been hired on at about six in the evening. Before that time, I can attest for the whereabouts of Edwin as we were aboard in Montreal for a case involving the death of Duke George Wilshire. We had been on the case for several weeks. During that time, I was uncover with Walus working research the whole time."
"Yes, yes, Detective Knight. You can spare me the alibis for now, if we were going to charge Edwin we wouldn't have hired you," Chief Vicky waved her hand, "Please just get to the facts of yesterday and your knowledge of the case. We will attempt data recovery shortly."
Chief Vicky whispered over to Detective Scott. He nodded and gathered a few men to task with investigating Walus's information. Walus watched as the small trop of three men were sent away. Walus closed his eyes and sighed. He truly hoped he was not digging Edwin in deeper than what expected. He went on, "Edwin was in the process of gathering information about her whereabouts on behalf of a private party. Edwin has since then received conflicting evidence about Kid Marshal's location. She was reported by the private party as being here in the jail cell. Miss Marshal had be accused of civil disobedience and was brought in."
"Additionally, my brother as he started to investigate has been threatened by an unknow party. Edwin believed they wish to do harm to Caroline and Yankee Smith. He received threatening phone calls. My brother had been going last I heard to check out the university grounds. He then sent me a message in destress that someone was following him. Furthermore, I received messages from Caroline that someone has broken and damaged out office. I theorize that someone is trying to frame by brother, because of their need for revenge," Walus said, "They are most likely highly skilled in hacking and changing data."
The chief gestured to someone else, "Go follow up on the office."
Then to another officer, she said, "You go check records for any Jane Does. I don't care if they don't look like her. Check all the records."
Two officers went off to check on the tasks. Chief Vicky clicked her pen and started to look over the information on the boards. She strode over to Walus and placed her hand on his shoulder. She firmly said, "We know something is not right. We have a few officers missing in action right now. They were sent out to the university to break up a party the night before."
Chief Vicky return to last returning officers. She motioned to Walus, "Help him out. I have to go handle the media circus about the missing heiress."
One officer objected, "But chief what about the other officers? Red? Yankee? Santo? David?"
The officer next to her, quietly pulled up a report. She raised up and showed to Chief Vicky, "W-we have a further complication . . . Oh chief! Yankee Smith has just been reported dead from a bombing near the sight of the Olivia Wilson murder site. His remains were found tied to a chair in Warehouse 9. One Edwin Knight was found in the scene knocked out with second degree burn wounds on his hand. He is over at Watts Medical Hospital. No other traces of any other humans were found on the sight. The Fire Department has put out the warehouse fire before it could spread further."
Chief Vicky whipped around to Walus, "We will do the ground work here. Go over and check on your brother."
