Chapter Eleven
Having searched the police records about Kid's location. There was no trace of her being brought in. Yankee said the police had not been called for anything on the University of Manchester and Barden campus. In fact, the whole evening at the university had been quiet. No drunken parties to break up and no break ins into hover cars. It was too quiet for a place filled of young adults who were well know for having a good time. Yankee said the police station had had to deal with a power outage for several hours. He had promised to give the Knights Detective a ring once he knew anymore details. Miss Caroline was off to the Hall of Records to find anymore information.
Edwin was on the campus of University of Manchester and Barden with the rain pouring as usual. He would be able to meet with Miss Caroline other time in the afternoon in order to get an update. Any signs of clues in the meanwhile would be shared via the web. He held up his umbrella as he scanned at the digital map of the place. It flickered in and out with the droplets of rain. Edwin held onto his umbrella loosely as he thought about the headline. A girl found with in such a fashion was nothing for the faint of heart to discover. Edwin shook the image of Olivia out of his mind as he kept his mind on the current.
Edwin found the direction toward the dorms. He needed to see for himself what Breathless was talking about. The detective went along the university's crowd walkways of students in their highlighter color jackets and umbrellas. There was plenty of the way of the sidewalk art of the school mascot. It was a unicorn jumping around on clouds and lots of rainbows. Edwin never understood the appeal of such things as sidewalk art. But it tended to make people feel better about the whole continues rain in Watts City. Edwin having travelled about the world. He personally liked it better over in New Hampshire. The idea of one kinds of weather besides rain was amazing.
Edwin dwelled up the idea of living else where not very long. No, it lasted no more than three seconds as he hurried along with his information he gathered online. Yankee had give Miss Caroline some tips of what where was Kid's dorm room and all her classes. Edwin looked over at the dorm and did not see it covered in warning signs about termites. Nor did he have any sign of a tent anywhere in sight. Edwin held up his umbrella more to stare at the dorm. It was marked Building C. Edwin found a student passing by and pointed to it, "Excuse me, are the dorms reopened since the termite problem was resolved?"
"What are you talking about, bro?" The young man in his blue rain coat stared at Edwin.
"Was there a termite problem in Building C recently?"
"Bro, you want to talk to the boss of the place. Like Avery knows all the stuff about the dorm here. I don't know shit about this stuff. I gotta go, bro. My classes are starting in the next ten minutes," the young man hurried off.
Edwin waved and turned to the directory to find his way to this Avery person. She appeared to be having office hours soon. Edwin walked on int the puddles toward the source of the awaiting knowledge. Edwin came to another building marked Main Office. He entered inside and came across a desk with the name Avery Sherly Student Housing Service Officer. Edwin looked at the woman with her chucky white sweater and braided black hair. Her eyes were made huge by her glasses as she looked up at Edwin and stopped what she was doing. She smiled, "Hello, sir. How may I help you?"
Edwin pulled out his badge and flashed it to the woman. Avery paused and held up her hands and frowned, "Now see here. I have already told the police we have handed over all the evidence we had. Both Miss Olivia and Miss Kid were last seen before the big party out here in the dorms yesterday. There are no more recordings we can give them."
Edwin started looked at her, "Ma'am I am not a police officer. I am a detective. My name is Edwin Knight. I have been hired by a private party to assistance with the police investigation."
"Huh. . . Wait a moment . . . Your name is familiar . . . Your brother is Walus Knight, world renowned detective. He found the Queen of England's crowd jewels that were missing for half a decade!" Avery's eyes went wide.
"Yes, I am part of the Knight Detective Agency."
"Is you brother going to come by campus and check out this awful thing? They need to find the person who did that to Olivia! Olivia was such a smart and kind girl. She used to volunteer to give campus tours to new students. She even acted like a mentor to freshman in the English department," Avery slide down in her chair, "To think they found her over at the docks like that. . . I can't help but worry how she could have gone over there."
"Miss Avery-"
"Just call me Avery."
"Avery, could you tell me more about this party? And who were the last people to see Olivia and Kid?"
"That party was a celebration of school pride. We were celebrating the school's two year old establishment. Olivia had made up the idea at the last minute. But boy did she have everything in order when she came over to my office on Monday. She was ready and willing to go. She must have spent ages on it. It seemed like she got every campus club on board," Avery sighed as she thought back, "As for the last person to see them both. . . I think that would be R.J. he was talking to both of them at 3 P.M. Kid had been in an argument with Olivia about something to do with owls."
"What can you tell me about Olivia and Kid?"
"Oh those two had been friends as long as they have been on campus. They were really tight. They seemed to always be together. Some people even thought the two of them were dating. But who I am to wonder about those things," Avery shrugged, "But for the most part they were like two peas in a pod. At least they were until the last year."
"What do you mean?"
"Oh. . . Olivia had come to me for some advice a while ago. She was worried that Kid was going in a sour way. She said Kid was getting involved in shady business. But she never explained why. . ."
"Did Olivia or Kid have any other friends I could talk to? Maybe they know more about this business?"
"Well, R.J., Peppermint, and August," Avery searched around her desk and produced a card that read LGBTQ+ Club, "You can most likely find them there."
"Would it be possible for me to see Olivia's or Kid's rooms?"
"You would need a warrant for that. Do you have one?"
"I can request one from the police. Could I seen in a droid to do a scan until then?"
"Sorry . . . I got to follow the rules. You need a warrant for you and your droid to go in. It is still breaking and entering without one."
Edwin was silent as he thought again of what Breathless had told him. He said to Avery, "Have there been any problems with termites? Any other things that might have caused the dorms to be closed?"
"What? No!" Avery shook her head and pushed her glasses up her nose, "We haven't had a problem like in ages. Why do you ask?"
"I must have heard wrong about the dorms," Edwin nodded as he thought things over, " I will be back shortly with a search warrant allowing me access to the building."
"Of course. It shouldn't take you that long to get it come through after all we had the police come on through in the last hour," Avery waved, "Have a nice day."
Edwin exited out of the building and pulled up his contact list on his phone. He set it to private and put it against his ear. It rung up Yankee on the other side. The police officer answered right away, "Hello Eddie, what is up?"
"I need access to the dorms of the subjects at hand," Edwin said.
"Eddie, you know that we love you over here. But you are still not on the case as a consult. Now if Walus were to be offering to help, I could get the police chief to sign on and you would have everything you need," Yankee's voice cracked on the other side of the line.
"You know that Walus has on vacation. He won't be back for two weeks. I have taken this one on my own. I am just starting to pick up the trail."
"Eddie. . . Man, I helped you out yesterday for old time's sake. But I am going to tell you know, this is nothing for you to get tangled up in. You ought to just join your brother on holiday. Take Caroline with you. Stay out of town for a while," Yankee's voice grew tense as a tapping sound came on the phone.
"Yankee, are you okay? You're not making a lot of sense."
"My friend, I want you to trust me. Just stop now. I think that Walus has the right idea. This case is just a waste of time. I am sure if I contact Caroline she would agree with me. You know what you ought to just go. Leave the whole affair to us at the station," There was a long pause and Yankee coughed. Then a tapping nose again. Yankee chuckled, "Yea, all good here, Eddie. No reason to worry. Anything else?"
Edwin finally heard soft tapping on the phone. It sounded like Morris Code. The tapping went on in a pattern: -.. --- -. .----. - / ... - --- .--. .-.-.-. Edwin froze and quietly asked, "Where are you right now Yankee? I would like to take you for coffee at lunch.
Yankee chuckled nervously, "Oh you know I am at my station. Of course, I can have coffee with you. How about that place over at third and fourth? You know."
... .-.-.- --- .-.-.- ... / - .-. .- .--. .--. . -.. The tapping continued on as Yankee swallowed and said, "Welp, I have to go. The chief is all me in. See you later."
Edwin listened as the line went dead. He rang up Miss Caroline, "We have problems! Someone has taken Yankee."
A deep voice calmly answered, "Detective Knight. We are civilized people. We ask for very little, but we don't like to be ignored. We are going to warn you once and only once. Stop digging around in what isn't your business. You and your friends can go about day in peace. No big issues, no questions. You just tell that dame it was all Fake News. Kid Marshal isn't that important. No problems, if you just forget about it."
"What have you done with Miss Caroline and Yankee?" Edwin demanded.
"Consider this your final warning," the voice cut out.
Edwin panicked for a second as Caroline answered the other side of the line. He jumped as Caroline answered. She answered, "Edwin, we are not due to meet up for several more hours. What do you need? Did you find some more evidence?"
"I just got a threat on your line. We have problems, Miss Caroline," Edwin felt faint and said, "Be alert and stick with Plan C."
