Chapter Eight: George Apartments

The research went along well into the night. Soon Miss Caroline and Edwin retired to their own homes. Well after Edwin had walked Miss Caroline home. He headed back to his own home. Edwin kept Miss Caroline's gift for another time closer to the holidays and tuck it away in his jacket. He had made it back outside of his own home on the outskirts of Watts City. Edwin unlike Walus, did not have the luxury of money or credits to make his work any easier. Instead, Edwin depended on the income from the case to keep himself going along. Edwin did not mind Walus being wealthier or more popular. Edwin found it easier for him to conduct his work from the shadows.

Edwin walked slowly over to through the rain to the towering shadows George Apartments. Edwin yawned as he headed into the front doors. He waved to the night watchmen who had his feet kicked up on his desk. Edwin went over to the elevator and pressed for the tenth floor. The detective held his umbrella neatly as he came along to his floor. Edwin walked out of the elevator toward his own room back at 106. Edwin froze in his place as he noticed a note tucked in his door. He held it in the bright light of the hallway. He paused to consider it as he unlocked his door and went in. Edwin pulled open the envelope and found a strange letter. The note only read,

Don't help her. You will only get yourselves into trouble.

Edwin held onto the vague note and locked his front door. He then went over to the kitchen and took out a plastic bag. He slipped the letter inside of it. He was like he not received strange threats before. Edwin looked up as the lights in his apartment flashed on slowly. His house assistant automatically responded in a deep male voice, "Welcome back Eddie!"

"Hey Roger," Edwin scanned his shabby apartment. The sofa bed was half made was not as Edwin had left it earlier in the morning. Miss Caroline must have ordered the A.I. to neaten up the place while he was away. His stack of books no rested near the sofa, but neatly on the bookshelf. His eyes saw the floor had been made spotless by Roger's wood cleaning mood. Edwin smirked just a tad. He walked along the floorboards with steady feet. He saw that Roger must have cleaned the rest of the place spotless with Miss Caroline's instructions.

Roger chimed in, "Eddie, I made sure the place was as requested."

"Hmm, I see Miss Caroline made all the setting to spotless," Edwin chuckled as he put the plastic bag down. He grew serious for half a moment and asked, "Hey Roger, did you get footage of anyone coming to the front door recently?"

"Yes, Eddie, I got a couple recordings. I have records of a neighbor coming by to knock on the door. It would appear to be Ms. Wilson from the eleventh floor. The next visitor was Miss Caroline early in the morning while you were away. She had come to check on the status of the house plants being watered. Around in the evening a person wearing a dark hat and sunglasses came by and dropped off the envelope," Roger had a screen pop of up the different events. The hologram screen appeared near Edwin's vision.

Edwin studied each one and finally came to the last come. He pointed to it the last one and said, "Roger, can you enhance that one any further? It is rather blurry."

"I am sorry, Eddie, I have already made it as best as I can," Roger sadly responded.

"It is fine," Edwin waved his palm over it to play it one more time. He held out his palm and his own digital display came up. He yawned as he walked over to sofa bed. Edwin's house was not fancy in anyway. But it served its purpose and had all the basics. Anything that was a small knickknack like a flower vase or a painting was a gift from Miss Caroline. Otherwise, Edwin kept his fidgets in its own drawer in the kitchen. Heck, Edwin ever really bothered with choosing colors for any of his walls. It was all plain white. The detective kicked off his shoes as the sofa shifted into a bed. A small droid came along and picked up his shoes.

Edwin watched the video once more as his brain went over the facts. He could dust for prints in the morning. He could also run them against the crime base. Edwin rubbed his eyes and called out to Roger, "Make sure to increase safety protocol for the time being. I don't want to take any chances."

"Understood, Eddie. I will revoke all access codes to the house, but for yours. Miss Caroline will no longer be allowed in freely nor any others," Roger's voice pleasantly answered.

Edwin laid back on the bed as the apartment lights dimmed down. He stared at the video again and took note of the limp of the stranger and their height. Edwin rubbed his eyes and yawned again. He would have plenty to work with after he got a nap. The jet lag had yet to wear off. Edwin dozed off for a moment.

It was morning when Roger set off the alarm at seven. The merry tone of beeping filled the apartment as the shades were opened. Edwin groaned as Roger had the coffee pot start up in the kitchen. The sound of the outside rain started to pound on the glass windows. Edwin stiffly got up from the sofa bed with his street clothing on. A new set was waiting over by the wardrobe fresh and pressed. Edwin shook his head and pushed himself out of bed.

Roger happily called out, "Morning Eddie! The weather for Watts City today is city at a lovely 50 degrees. The forecast is calling for heavy showers and chance of lighting. Traffic looks good for hover cabs long the 102-I and 103-I. You schedule appears to have not been synced up here with home base. Would you like me to update everything?"

Edwin pulled off his wrinkled shirt and rubbed his scarred-up face. He answered, "Good morning Roger. . . Yes, sync up data from the Palm Reader."

"Very well," Roger said, "Shall I make you some breakfast? I called in a fresh order of food since you were on holiday. Miss Caroline was kind enough to see everything sorted, although I could have done it."

"No, Roger, it is okay. . . I was planning on eating out," Edwin rubbed some of the bandages from his fight with the tigers. Montreal was a nightmare. He could not blame poor Walus for wanting a break. Edwin was a well-built man for someone who usually worked with research and hacking. Edwin rubbed his wild hair, "Roger, the next time I fall sleep like that do try and wake me up again."

"I will try Eddie," Roger paused, "Your data has been synced up. It appears you have a new case to work on, Eddie. You have a to-do list entered in from Miss Caroline. Would you like me to review it with you?"

"I got it," Edwin answered quickly.

Roger paused as the coffee machine finished. The automatic assistant then had the computer pop open without instruction. Several screens from the current case popped up as Roger pulled up the information that Edwin had gathered. Roger watched from his hub of lens as Edwin got dressed and moved like a zombie. Edwin paused to look up at the cameras and waved. He said, "You know Roger, maybe we ought to get you a housing of some kind. I have thought the dog models were nice. Maybe a parrot or something?"

Roger considered, "I know many Macys and Rogers have been changed to the desire of their users. Many have even been renamed to suite the taste of the user. But you would place me in one of those silly models? I much rather like being part of the home, thank you."

"I am just saying Roger, I just tinkered with your personality setting a little. I gave you a sense of humor and not a need to be cheery all the time."

"Eddie, I enjoy my work as your digital assistant. I understand that Miss Caroline does a lot of work for you at the office. But I will always be here in the house to aide you in your needs," Roger proudly said.

"I know," Edwin dashed over to gather his coffee and returned to the desk. He again watched the video from the front door and tried to find anything he missed. He pulled out the plastic bag and the note and scanned for fingerprints. It was clean. Edwin frowned and kept it for later. He drank down the cup of coffee in silence.

Soon he read about Kid Marshal. The new articles showed the same information that Miss Caroline had told him before. She was the only child of the Hot Sauce King from Texas and the Miss Universe from twenty years ago. Marshal family was on poor terms with each other since the death of Mrs. Marshal due to accident. Edwin went over to the school website and searched for Kid there. He found photos of her with the LGBTQIA Club on campus and the college paper. Everything else was locked up in the records.

Edwin took another slip of coffee as he peered at the pages. He was trying to find this best friend, Olivia. There was no sign of her on either pages. Edwin knew the next part would be social media. It was then he came to realize the major problem that Miss Breathless was fearing. It however, was not in the shape of Kid Marshal being jail. As Edwin typed in the name Olivia and the University. The headline soon popped up, "Olivia Vanderdoes, Heiress to Hover Ford, Found Dead, Kid Marshal, Heiress to the Much Beloved Hot Sauce Chain, Declared Missing."
