Ch. 22: The Walking Dead
Liz had called Damon, Stefan and me to meet her at the hospital.
Damon and I were standing together in the waiting room.
Stefan walked toward us.
"You just missed the doughnuts," I told him.
"Yeah, I was with Elena, burning off a few thousand hate-filled calories," Stefan told us. He looked at Damon. "What happened to you helping me?"
"Help?" Damon asked. "Yes. Prolong the inevitable? Waste of my time."
"Mm, you're avoiding," I told him. "How unexpected."
"I'm not avoiding," Damon told us. "Elena's only goal is to end Katherine's life, and that's not gonna just magically disappear with pilates and a juice cleanse."
Liz approached us. "Hey, guys, thanks for coming."
"Hey," Stefan said.
"Why were we invited?" Damon asked.
"Well, the hospital has kept the blood banks empty ever since they were raided last month," Liz told us. "We thought at the very least it would help keep the vampire population away."
"And it didn't?" I asked.
"See for yourself," Liz told us, leading us into a patient's room where a body lied on a bed, its wrists bloodied.
"Whoa," I said.
"There are four other victims in this wing, each one almost completely drained of blood," Liz told us. "You think it's Silas?"
"Or a doctor with some very questionable bedside manners," Damon told her.
"But five victims?" Liz asked. "That's a lot of blood, and it's not like he can take it with him."
"Unless he's fueling up for something big," I told her, exchanging looks with my brothers.
"Big?" Liz repeated. "Any details would be helpful, considering I'm dealing with five grieving families out there and a psychic killer on the loose."
"Silas wants Bonnie to do a spell to drop the Veil from the Other Side," Damon told her.
"I have no idea what that means," Liz told us.
"It's an invisible wall that separates our plane from the plane of all dead supernatural creatures," Damon explained. "Now, Silas wants that to go away so he can take the Cure, die, and not have to spend an eternity in a supernatural purgatory."
"And when do you suppose Silas plans on doing this?" Liz asked.
"Next full moon," I answered. "Tomorrow night."
****
After dark, the lights had powered off completely.
So, surrounded around a desk, we had flashlights to look at a map in front of us.
Liz markered the places with a marker as she spoke. "The power outages originated at three different places in town: the Young farm, the Lockwood estate, and a blown transformer off Old Miller Road."
I picked up the marker and connected the dots. "Well, these are the locations of the Silas massacres. It's the Expression Triangle. Bonnie must be doing the spell."
"So much for needing a full moon," Damon said.
"And there's something else," Liz said. "One of the power company guys has a daughter who goes to school with Bonnie. He saw her leaving the Young farm an hour ago... with Elena."
"But... Caroline's with Elena," Stefan told us.
"Looks like Bonnie Bennett has a new Doppelgänger friend," I told them.
"So how do we find them?" Liz asked.
"Well, they must be some where in the triangle," Stefan told us. "My guess is that they would be right in the middle."
Stefan drew a point in the middle of the triangle, then circled it.
"And where exactly might that be?" Damon asked.
Stefan, Damon and I exchanged a look, looking at the map.
The school.
****
Stefan, Damon and I drove up and parked outside the school, getting out.
The winds were blowing fiercely.
Elena walked toward us.
We had to shout to be heard over the wind.
"Where's Caroline?" Stefan asked.
"Inside looking for Bonnie," Elena answered. "I think we should split up. Damon and I can look outside while you, Caroline and Kaylin look inside."
"All right, let us know if you find anything," I told them.
Stefan and I walked inside.
****
Stefan and I entered the cafeteria carrying flashlights, finding Caroline.
"Hey, there you are," I told her. "Any luck?"
"I searched the whole school," Caroline told us. "She should be here." The noise of something falling over broke the silence. We turned toward it. "What was that?"
We walked over to the kitchens cautiously.
I approached the freezer and opened it to reveal a bag of ice, which started dripping onto the floor. "Hm. Ice is melting."
I closed the freezer door.
"Ugh," Caroline said. "It just doesn't make any sense. This is the center of the triangle. If she's gonna do the spell, she has to do it here. This is where they should be."
"Actually, I think we're in the right place..." Stefan trailed off, shining his flashlight onto the floor, where the water from the melting ice was flowing down a drain. "...just the wrong elevation."
****
I called Damon.
"If I remember correctly, I think there's an entrance in the basement."
"Well, where's the basement?"
"Off the boiler room," Elena answered.
"You hear that?" Damon asked.
"All right, I'll meet you there."
I hung up.
****
We were in the underground chambers when we heard Bonnie screaming in pain, running inside to see Bonnie kneeling to the floor, her shirt blood-stained like she had been stabbed, her skin sizzling like she was a vampire who had been touched by vervain.
"Bonnie," I said. "Bonnie, what happened?"
"Katherine," Bonnie told us. "Find Katherine. We're linked."
"Then unlink her," Caroline told her. She looked at Stefan and me. "You go, I'll stay with Bonnie."
We stood, leaving.
We followed the sounds of Katherine screaming.
"You have done nothing but suck the happiness out of my life," Elena told her. "Well, now I get to kill you."
"No, wait, please!" Katherine told her.
"Goodbye, Katherine," Elena told her.
We got there just as Elena was about to stake Katherine, who was on the floor beneath her.
Stefan rushed toward them, pushing Elena off of her, pinning her to the floor.
"Stefan!" Elena complained.
Katherine smiled. "Thanks for the save, handsome."
Stefan struggled to restrain Elena.
I pulled Katherine to her feet with vampire speed, pushing her toward the door. "Get the hell out of here before I kill you myself."
"Really?" Katherine asked. "I'm your biggest problem right now?"
"Get her out of here," Stefan told me.
I gestured for Katherine to go, raising my eyebrows impatiently.
Katherine turned to go.
I followed her.
****
Bonnie had immobilized Silas.
Kol had tried to kill Elena. Jeremy and Stefan had saved her.
At the school, Stefan, Damon, Bonnie and I were talking.
"You need to get rid of Silas' body," Bonnie told us.
"Well, there's a slight problem, Medusa," I told her. "Even though you turned him into stone, if he gets one more drop of blood he's back to his old mind tricks."
"All right, so let's do what we should've done to Klaus," Stefan told us. "Let's drop his body in the middle of the ocean."
Elena approached us. "Bonnie?" Bonnie turned to face her. "I don't know what to say."
"You don't have to say anything," Bonnie told her.
"But I was so horrible to you," Elena told her.
"You weren't you," Bonnie told her. "I know what that's like. I wasn't me for a long time. We can talk about that later." She smiled. "You've got some catching up to do."
Bonnie nodded at Jeremy.
Jeremy walked closer to us. "Thank you, Bonnie."
"I'll give you guys as much time as I can," Bonnie told her. Jeremy wrapped his arms around her. They pulled back. "But I have to go put the veil back up."
Bonnie walked away, leaving.
"I should, uh, make sure Kol's body is somewhere safe until the Veil goes back up," I told them, walking away, leaving.
I had to bury Kol.
Again.
