Book #6
Caroline B. Cooney's The Ransom of Mercy Carter
On February 28, 1704, Mercy Carter is kidnapped from her home in Deerfield, Massachusetts. On that freezing cold night, Indians infiltrated the small settlement and Mercy is separated from her family, some of whom do not survive. She and hundreds of other settlers are forced to walk the three hundred miles north to a Kahnawake Indian village in Canada.
At first Mercy's only hope is that the English government in Boston will send ransom for her and the other white settlers. But as time goes by, Mercy thinks less and less of ransom, of Deerfield, and even of her "English" family. As she discovers that the savages are not as savage as she thought and as their ways become her ways, Mercy begins to wonder: If ransom comes, will she take it?
This book is based on the true story of the Deerfield villagers. I had no idea about these stories until my family had to read it for school. Everything is straight to the point; no inncrypted wording, no overly explained scenes; nothing of the sort.
There is no swearing, but their is a moderate amount of violence and mention of violence. Nothing gory but it's still pretty intense stuff. There is mention of sex at one point, but it's not in detail.
No matter how many times I read it, this book keeps pulling me back into it's pages of history and emotion and adventure. Though Mercy may not be your twenty-first century hero, she as good as a hero can get for her time.
If you enjoy history, look no further.
