Chapter Thirty-One
(*) Devin
The cold air wrapped around me like fingers. He pulled me forward. My hair smelt of scorched fire. We stopped to gather ourselves. I spun in a circle and shouted
"We're free!" I shouted into the air. I heard Thomas panting beside me
"I'm so sorry Devin, I-it's all my fault I shouldn't have-"
"Just stop Thomas. You got me out. You saved me. All those bad things you did before don't compare to what you just did. Now, let's get out of here." I took his hand and we began running up the hill and to the front yard. The sky lit up in fire, blowing shards of glass and building material everywhere. We fell to the ground.
"Are you alright?" He said after the last shards rained down.
"Yes, I'm fine. You?"
"Uh huh." He pulled me close and placed a kiss on my forehead.
"I forgive you Tommy." I replied pushing myself to my feet. Then I pulled him up too.
"But how can you forgive me? I just led you to your death."
"Because, It's the right thing to do. And now I know that your life was on the line. You had to deliver me so that you wouldn't die. So that you could keep living your life."
"But- but what if he had killed you?"
"Then he would have, but you would have gotten to live." I told him as I grabbed his hand and squeezed it.
"But I would have to live with the guilt that I killed you."
"Yes, you would have. And maybe that guilt would make you stop being a murderer. Doing other people's deeds. You could have gone into hiding or moved to a different state or country. Started a new life."
"I suppose."
"Now come on, let's stop lallygagging, we need to go before the cops get here." We moved again, heading down the path to the woods. We had no more than stepped one foot into the tree line when.
"Stop right where you are." We froze in our tracks. I jerked my hand out of his. We turned and saw two cops standing there, their guns pointed at us. Thoma's hand squeezed my arm hard, out of fear. We must have looked like quite a sight. My dress was torn, my hair all over the place, I had dried blood on cheek and parts of my dress. My feet were bare and cold in the snow. Thomas's black blazer had several tears in it. He wore black pants with his black Chelsea Boots. His hair was unruly. And the building was burning behind them.
"Is there a problem sir?" I asked, my breath heavy."
"I don't know yet Ma'am. Sir I need you to let go of her." Thomas slowly released me and stepped back a little. The second police officer talked
"Your Devin Driskel correct?"
"Yes I am." The police officer reached up to his walky talkie and said
"We found her. Going to investigate something, but tell her sister we found her." They put their guns back in their holsters.
"My sister?"
"Yes, your sister has been trying to find you, she gave us the tip to come here."
"But how would she know?"
"Apparently someone left her a tip. She doesn't know who." I shook my head trying to put all the pieces together.
Is she here?" I asked hopefully.
"No, i"m afraid not." The first officer spoke again.
"Is this the man that kidnapped you?" I looked up at the second officer
"No sir, this is my husband." I grabbed Thomas' arm. "The man you are looking for is named Thomas." I knew he was staring at me, I could feel it. But I kept my face directed towards the officers.
"What is your husband's name Ma'am." The officer asked writing on a notepad. I looked at Thomas and smiled,
"His name is Quinn Soulstealer."
"Thank you Ma'am, I need to ask you a few questions sir."
"Of course, about what?"
"How you found your wife."
"Oh." The officer started walking with him towards the cop car. I went up to the second officer.
"Could you please take me to my sister?"
"Yes. I can. What about your husband?" Turning towards Thomas I said,
"He'll find his way home."
