Chapter Three
Foster had been exploring the place, taking it easy and slow with his leg and very grateful for the staff, if not worried about damaging it or treating it wrong. Fie seemed chipper and flew excitedly around after deciding that the staff was a good staff for his partner.
The place he seemed quite stuck in was huge. He didn't trust leaving, not after being attacked. As intimidating and terrifying as the people here were he felt more in danger should he leave. After a little while he soon realized he was lost. Didn't bother him much as he was sure he'd make it back eventually. Foster only started to get annoyed when his leg started hurting a bit too much.
It was the large man from earlier that Vy had hugged that found Foster. "It's incredible isn't it? What she's managed to do? Humans were always irritating things, but they do sometimes make exquisite work," he noted, running a finger up and down the stone arch.
Foster started at the voice and looked around to see the large man . Violet eyes wide, he just nodded, intimidated and afraid. Was this one Lucifer? He couldn't quite remember. Keeping his mouth shut as to not say something stupid, foster cast his gaze down and to the side.
"My sister forgot to introduce us in the moment earlier. I am Lucifer, though she has a nasty habit of shortening it to Luci," he added reaching out his hand for Foster to shake. "This is what the humans still do to greet one another, yes?"
Foster nodded and shakily took the hand, deciding it safer not to refuse. Lucifer seemed logical and friendly. He supposed he shouldn't assume he's bad judging by all the rest of everything that had been proven wrong so far. But the fear was a conditioned response, seemingly ingrained into him by countless people and stories in his life. "N-nice ta meet you..."
Lucifer gave a small smile to the man, "To you as well. I think we should address a small issue that I have right now. That's what you think you know about me." The smile slipped from his lips and a stern glare replaced it. "Humans have lied about me for...well...as long as humans have been around, so i'd prefer you ignore their fables and i'd rather you ask what you'd like to know." He glanced down at his fingers as if checking his nails. Rather than moving forward in an intimidating matter like Vyriel would have, Lucifer leaned back, away from the frightened man. He was sure his confrontational manner would frighten the boy a bit, but as long as he kept a distance he figured it would be taken less menacing than it had come out
Foster looked back up at Lucifer, surprised. He had expected intimidation not this. The bluntness took him off guard but he took a deep breath and gave a shaky smile. "My names Foster... if ya don't mind me asking... why do w- ah, humans say such things about you, specifically?" he knew how humans embellish things and lied. Of course he knew. But usually something caused it, either an action of the subject starts it or an excuse for them to lie and slander the person.
"Humans and I did not have the best relationship when I was younger. I thought Adam and Eve were unworthy of all my father's affections. They distrusted me, though I never hid my thoughts from them," Lucifer explained before looking back up at Foster. "I never wanted to cause harm to them until today when I discovered what happened to my sister. I've even taken the cause to help them."
Foster listened closely. It didn't seem like he was lying. Not that he had any reason to lie. Remembering the state he'd seen Vy, their anger seemed more than justified. Scary, but justified. "You all....aren't gonna kill all humans right?"
"Just the ones causing all the trouble. For now it seems like a localized phenomenon and we'd rather keep it that way. I don't know all the details, but we're planning to meet tomorrow to go ever everything. It may be a good idea that you join us," Lucifer added with a nod toward Foster. "You may not have the mind or power for war, but what happens may affect you. If she's planning what I think she's planning then everyone should be able to cast a vote, though...I understand the impossibility of the situation."
"What do you think she's planning?" Lucifer seemed... nice and honest. Not at all what he expected. "Or should I just wait till we all vote?" Everything about the situation he was in was strange and not what he expected. Foster was starting to get a bit used to it.
"I think she plans to take time to walk amongst the humans and announce herself as a god. When she does that though...there are some that will mean to kill her. Humans are not good when they find beings more powerful than themselves." Lucifer looked away from Foster, knowing he'd never be able to hide the concern from his eyes.
When Lucifer turned to Foster again his jaw was set in a stubborn manner, "If they kill her then there is nothing and no one that could stand in the way of humans slaughtering her children."
Violet eyes showed sympathetic and understanding. He knew first hand how they didn't like things that were different and how they will attack what scared them. "That... does sound dangerous. It'll take a lot more then declaring she's a god an' showing her power. A lot more. A blatant power display will peg her as a monster or devil."
"I have no doubt she plans on doing more than a simple display of power. If killing those that have wronged her people is how she plans on starting the journey among man it will only end horribly though. Do you suppose we could walk to the kitchen while we speak? It has been a long time since I could take in the simple pleasures humans have," Lucifer added motioning toward the kitchen. "I also suppose you'd like a few answers about that," He continued and nodded down at Merlin's staff.
"Yeah, we can walk an' talk." Foster smiled a bit at the taller man before starting towards the direction he had pointed.. Thinking of all the chaos that would surely happen with what Vy seemed to be planning planted a seed of worry and stress in his stomach. Talking about the staff he was given seemed like a much nicer topic. "I have a lot of questions... One being, I have no clue why she would intrust me with something like this. Another being, just what all does Merlin's staff do?"
Lucifer sighed, "I think first you should know the two most prominent men who held the one. The first being Merlin of course. I can imagine the tales you've heard about him and I assure you...he was a fantastic warlock. The other being Moses. This is the same staff he used to part the Red Sea...not any sort of divine intervention from Yahweh." Lucifer rolled his eyes at the name before looking back at Foster. "There is an ancient magic that flows in your veins. One my sister prided above all others. The fae was her first creation when she was more...docile than she is now."
Hearing about how such important people held the same staff he held, he wanted to let go of it right that second. THere was no way he was worthy of this thing. No way at all. But to drop it would be rude to such a relic. That, and he needed it to walk. SHifting his gaze away from the other, he frowned. "I really don't know anything about fae or how I could be half that. I can't remember a single moment that might have been a sign." He heaved a sigh before looking back up, "With all that's goin' on, I wouldn't really be surprised if I was part fae...But I just don't know. I'm sure she's not lying."
"Correct me if I'm mistaken, but you weren't raised around fae. How would you know your powers if you don't know they exist much less how to access them?" Lucifer opened the refrigerator open only to find it empty of all contents. He turned to look at Foster in pure astonishment, "Does she eat nothing?"
Vyriel lay in Raegar's cold embrace for a moment before a thought struck her hard. She sat up and covered herself, "May I ask a question. I do ask you to be honest...whatever your answer may be."
Frowning and raising a brow at her behaviour, Raegat sat up, also. "Sure. As long as you don't injure me for my honesty. I'll be blunt with you. What's the question?"
She turned and gave him a weak smile, "I promise. Did you look for me at all when I want missing? I know I didn't tell anyone my plan." After a moment she shook her head and softly added, "I don't know if I want to know the answer or not."
He blinked at the question. It hadn't quiet been the sort of question he expected and her weak smile took him off guard a bit. "Well...You asked for honesty so I'll give it to you..." He held her gaze a moment before looking to the side, almost seeming embarrassed. "I did look. It pissed me off that you left...."
A rosy blush colored her cheeks, but a soft smile curved the corners of her mouth, "I don't know how I should take that." With a sigh she stood up and changed into a nightdress, "It has been a very long time since any man has claimed any sort of affections for me." She chuckled to herself, but it wasn't a happy chuckle. It was forced and her fingers lifted to touch her cheek. "My eyes are leaking..."
Raegar only sat in stunned silence at her actions. She was crying? Why? This woman made no sense! This couldn't be his fault, right? He grimaced as he watched her, unsure of what to do and feeling irked. What an embarrassing situation. "I told you the truth. What do you want from me?"
Vyriel shook her head, "You've done nothing wrong. Now that you've received the reward you wanted you're free to leave for the night if you desire." She looked away and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and drew in a shaky breath. She couldn't remember the last time a man had looked for her out of desire. Anger? Yes. Fear? Yes. Need? Yes. Desire...desire was a foreign concept to her. Part of her wanted to be the object of desire, but it was an irrational longing that would only get in the way of her duty.
Red eyes narrowing suspiciously, he tried to figure out if leaving was really a good choice. Eventually he huffed a sigh and got up to leave. If he stayed he'd have to comfort her or something. Best just leave and let her be. Once at the door he hesitated, waiting for her to say something before opening the door and stepping out. He swore she gave him a headache half the time, but after the good time they just had, he found he wasn't as irritated as normal.
As soon as the door closed and she thought Raegar was gone she allowed herself to curl into a ball on the bed with her pillow to muffle the sound of her sobs. They made her body heave and ache. It was much easier to reign in emotions outside of the flesh of her human form, but that wasn't an option. Not until she finished with the humans. Then she could return to where her loneliness was nothing more than a dull throbbing at the very back of her consciousness.
Raegar hasn't gotten far before hearing her sobs and halting, a look of slight horror on his face. He hesitated a moment, looking back before shaking his head and hurrying away. She probably wanted privacy...right?
Looking into the empty fridge right along side Lucifer, Foster frowned. It may be all good for angels not to eat, he didn't know, but his body needed food. And now that he was standing in front of an empty fridge, he was realizing just how long it had been since he'd eaten. Not that he wasn't used to foodless days.
Lucifer's eyes narrowed and he turned quickly toward the direction of the office. "Why is she crying," he whispered more to himself than Foster. His grip tightened on the counter, making his knuckles go white. Lucifer's mind had quickly switched from food to concern for his sister and the devious man who had gotten him out of his cage.
Foster looked over at where lucifer as glaring, worried. Crying? Was she okay? He watched as Raegar walked away, looking a mixture between confused, horrified, and pissed. Though he couldn't really think of a time yet where that man hadn't at least looked irritated.
"What did you do," Lucifer snapped at Raegar convinced that the man had somehow harmed his sister.
Vyriel heard the commotion and stifled her tears before walking out of the room and into the kitchen. Her eyes were swollen and rimmed in red, the silk nightgown wrinkled from where she had curled up. She could feel her heart in her throat as she stopped in front of the three, "He did nothing to me."
"Then what is wrong," Lucifer inquired softly his eyes filled with worry.
She gave a laugh that sounded more like a sob than she meant it to, "I've been accused of a great many things, brother, but being wanted has never been one of them." She looked away from them and wiped at her eyes again. "I do not blame him for being angry about my sudden departure. He had I had an agreement before I disappeared."
Foster stared at her, frowning and trying to think of things to comfort her with. Half feeling like he didn't know her well enough to be able to say anything truly meaningful. So he instead stood there, fidgeting and searching for words as Raegar stood stick straight only feet away from the puffy eyed woman.
His expression grew more frustrated and pissed as she talked, and conflicted. It seemed like eh was struggling to either hold back his words or to let them out. After several moments of silence, he groaned and spat out, "I wasn't pised you left because of a stupid agreement, damn it. As stupid as it is I fuckin' missed you. Shit. Do I have to spell it out?" Raegar glared at her, pissed and embarrassed, tone not matching what he was trying to say at all.
Lucifer scrunched up his nose at the two, "Foster and I will go get groceries. It seems these two have a lovers quarrel to take care of." Lucifer grabbed Foster's arm quickly and the two disappeared leaving Vyriel alone with the vampire. Her mouth was slack from shock and the announcement had been so sudden that she gripped the wall for support.
Raegar scowled at the other two, wishing he could disappear, too. He couldn't believe what he just sprouted to her and he was trying hard to keep face and lessen the embarrassment. Wasn't she going to say something? Anything? He just wanted her to speak so he could be pissed off at that instead of standing her feeling vulnerable and embarrassed.
"...You said you wanted blunt honesty. So I gave it. So what?"
She looked over at him, eyes swimming with confusion and wonder, "I've never been missed before. Not even by Lucifer. This...this is what it looks like?" Vyriel walked over with furrowed brows and lifted her hand as if to touch his cheek. She pulled her hand away quickly as if it may scald her and dropped it slowly. She looked away from him and crossed her arms as if hugging herself. "Sometimes...during the nights I cried because I never told you I was leaving. It is not a thing I admit to often...caring for another I mean."
For a moment his pissed off expression fell and he was simply baffled that she had cared for him and cried for him before an expression of confusion took place. Wasn't she always throwing stuff at him and yelling at him? Granted he hadn't been much better on his side. "You are a confusing and difficult woman..." But he was glad, strangely.
"I do not know how to express," she admitted waving her arms a bit as if to indicate her emotions. "But I also have to lead and I strongly dislike my orders being questioned." She sighed and sat down, "At every opportunity you...question...everything I do...you question it."
"Because I don't get you and someone needs to get you to think for once." He felt as if she'd run off at any crazy idea she had if everyone only did what she said. "And you piss me off. I don't deal well with holding my tongue when I'm pissed you know."
She chuckled a bit, "Yes. I know. I do hope you understand though...being...like this is not what I'm accustomed to. Yahweh..." Vyriel sighed and refused to look at him. "Yahweh was not one to be questioned. He was quite...well...you saw what he did to Lucifer in his anger. There were many times I tried to defy him only to find myself at his mercy. I am...sorry for misunderstanding though." Vy couldn't bear to look up at him. She didn't know what expression she would find on his face, be it disgust or anger. Neither she wished to see any more of that night.
Should she look up, she'd simply see an expression of confusion. He just could not figure this woman out. "Not sure why you would want to be like him. Especially knowing the things he did... You are nothing like that." And that was good. From all the things he'd heard about Yahweh, he wouldn't be able to stand the guy.
"He was not all bad. He was a strong leader and on his good days...he was very good," she replied. "Of course his good days were often directed at humans more than myself. Most of the time I was merely...a weapon of sorts." She finally looked back up at him with a frown. "I know you're jealous of Foster, but it is not the way you think...when I created the fae I was...younger...softer. I did not believe in war at the time, nor did I believe Lucifer about the cruelty of humans so I gave them powers over nature. I did not make them strong to fight wars or win battles. They were meant to...give the world color. A bit of beauty at the start of the world. Most of them are gone now...in fact he may be the last of his kind. I have not seen another in a very long time." She plucked at the hem of her dress as if it were the most interesting thing in the world. "He is the last reminder that I was not always what I am now. That I was not always bloodstained."
That was a lot of information, nothing less than a confession. For once, at least, she seemed to be making sense, at least partly. "...It'll be hard keeping that boy safe when halflings are being hunted down. But I guess what you are saying makes sense." Though he didn't think she was bad as she was now, nor entirely hardened and blood stained. The fact she wished to protect her creation so much should have been proof of that. "Maybe we'll even find more of his kind."
Her brows furrowed for a moment and her face scrunched in an adorable sort of confusion, the kind humans saw on their children. After a moment she began to giggle and that giggle turned into a small fit of laughter, "Are you being nice without expecting anything in return? If so it is a wonderful change of pace and if not you've pulled a very cruel joke on me." She looked him with a wide innocent smile that cause a small crevice to form on her cheek. A formidable archangel...one of the last two gods in existence had a dimple just above the x shaped scar on her jaw.
The familiar expression of irritation returned and he scowled at her. Well, he had tried at least. Somehow, his scowl didn't seem very serious. Maybe her laughter ment she was feeling better. He'd much rather her go back to pissing him off than crying.
Vyriel pouted at his expression and she reached out to ruffle his hair, "Don't be angry with me Raegar. You'll break my poor heart." Without waiting for him to be more angry with her for messing up his hair she kissed his cheek. "I think instead of being angry you should come back to bed with me and we can sleep through the day."
"Yeah, alright. Whatever. You've exhausted me anyways."
Foster looked around at the produse, reminded of his job and hoping desperately that when all this over he'll still have business. His expert eye easily found what was good, what was bad, and what was damaged by careless delivery. Turning pale eyes towards the tall man next to him, he smiled and asked. "Anything catch your fancy? Anything you really wanna try?"
"I am no expert, i'll let you decide since none of the rest of us have to eat. Though...I am surprised Vy didn't chose to test her palate while here," Lucifer admitted as he looked at the vast display of food.
"It'll be a bit hard to pick out foods you might like if I don't know what flavors yah favor, but I guess we can just find out." He hummed a bit, picking out a small variety of foods to cover a wide range of taste and texture. He knew well how to make a lot out of a little and maybe Vy would want some too. Strange how almost normal this felt.
"Do you think they've gotten out whatever that was," Lucifer questioned with a furrowed brow. "I do not like the idea of him loving my sister." A deep frown of disgust found its way on his face. "From what I've seen the bat is always...angry. No one needs Vyriel's short temper any shorter."
"I don't really know him at all...but sometimes anger and anger works out. I've seen relationships where it's worked. Somehow all the anger seems to cancel out." He shrugged, bagging some veggies and fruit before moving onto meat.
"She used to be someone so soft and fragile," Lucifer admitted with a frown. "I wish I knew what Yahweh did to her to make her change so much. She never would have found happiness with a man like him before." Lucifer's unhappiness was evident as they made their way through the store. Women began to stare as the two moved up and down the aisles causing Foster discomfort, but Lucifer didn't notice.
"I don't know what she used to be like but she still seems to be nice now. Hard at the edges but that's not bad. People change, for better or for worse. I'm sure ya've changed over time, right?" He knew he'd changed, a lot. He kept his gaze on the food he was picking out, debating what price was lowest for the best quality, trying to ignore all of the attention.
"If you had a sister would you want her consorting with the likes of him," Lucifer questioned. He was lost in the conversation when a woman tapped his shoulder gently. "Can I help you," he questioned.
Foster jumped a bit at the woman's arrival, turning towards her, noodles in hand. Lucifer sure did attract attention. He rarely got stopped by random people, let alone stared at. So many women were staring at Lucifer. He found himself feeling a bit irritated, but kept any sign off of his face.
"I was wondering if I could squeeze between you to get something," she inquired sweetly.
"Be my guest. I think we were headed elsewhere anyway, weren't we Foster," Lucifer added, giving the halfling a look of desperate confusion.
"Y-yeah. We are. Excuse us, ma'am an' have a nice day." Foster motioned for Lucifer to follow, feeling irked and confused himself.
"I don't think that was usual human behavior," the angel whispered down at Foster. "Do we need anything else before we go?"
"No. I think we have everything... A lot of folks are staring at you." All women? It seemed so. "We can go check out now and head back."
"Thank you," Lucifer added with a nod. He checked out as quickly as they could before grabbing the bags and disappearing as soon as they made it to the first black alley. "I forgot to tell you, my sister made sure to make your last delivery," Lucifer announced when they arrived back in the kitchen. The couple were gone leaving Lucifer to wonder where they disappeared to.
"Really?" Foster heaved a sigh of relief and smiled at Lucifer. "I'll have to tell her thanks, later." Seeing Lucifer's worried expression, he looked around. The strange quarrel seemed to be over. He was pretty sure it ended well, but he couldn't really know. He couldn't help but feel relieved the vampire wasn't there. He was intimidating. "...Yah wouldn't happen to know if everyone else might want some food, would you? I could make some for everyone?"
"I would. I'll go ask Vyriel of she'd want any food," Lucifer said happily before heading back to her room. He swung the door wide open and paled at the sight. His sister was lying asleep curling into the vampire's arms. Her nightgown had been removed leaving her more exposed than Lucifer had seen her since their creation and her black wings fell over the side of the bed.
Lucifer slammed the door in his hurry to leave and walked stiffly down the hall. "Don't go in there," Lucifer told Foster shortly. He sat down, in a hurry to forget the distressing sight he had just witnessed.
Foster stared at him for a few moments, shocked, before nodding and turning back to the food he was prepping. He had an inkling what Lucifer had walked in on. Really, he should have knocked. In an attempt to take the other's mind off of it, he gave him some cucumber to munch on, snacking on some himself. "Um... So how does it feel to be out and about after so long?"
"I wish it were under different circumstances, but I have missed the taste of freedom," Lucifer replied before glancing back at the room and scrunching his nose. He began mumbling to himself for a few moments. He looked back up at Foster and shook his head, "Disgusting."
Foster simply frowned, not sure how to take the other's mind off of who his sister is sleeping with. He sorta understood the frustration, but he'd never had a sister nor even a family. He wasn't sure he could really sympathize. "W-well...Food should be done in about a half hour. It just needs to cook. It'll be more of a sample sort of meal so you can find out what kinds of food you like."
"What did you fix," Lucifer questioned and leaned forward to smell the array of food.
"Mmmm. Egg rolls, chicken and rice, some perch fish, salad, some pasta, and fruit."
"Sounds good," he admitted before leaning back again. "If it tastes as good as it smells I think we'll be wonderful friends Foster. Much better than that leech back there."
Foster couldn't help but beam at that, smiling wide. "Well, I sure hope it's good. I certainly tried." He chuckled a bit. He really hadn't ever made anything but for himself and Fie. Speaking of Fie, he looked over at his shoulder to see his oddly quiet bird just watching them. "Fie, yer gonna worry me if you stay so quiet. Is everything alright?" He pat the little bird's head, earning a small chirp.
"Fie? Is that his name," he questioned with a smile. "Can I pet him?" Lucifer cocked his head to the side and extended a finger, hoping the bird would fly over.
Fie looked over at Lucifer, staring for a few moments uncharacteristically quiet, before giving a loud chirp and flying right over and landing on his head. Making himself comfortable, he started to chirp a song.
Seeing this, Foster fell into a fit of laughter. "Gu-guess Fie likes ya!" He had to say between giggles and laughter.
Lucifer shot Foster a goofy triumphant smile, "Aren't you just a friendly fellow?"
Vyriel woke up at dusk slightly chilled despite the warmth of the room. She looked up and saw Raegar, a slow lazy smile resting on her face before she laid her head on his chest once more. Quickly she stretched her wings back, happy to feel the muscles flex on their own again.
Raegar was still asleep, face lax and peaceful, a stark difference from when he was awake. He was facing towards her and didn't stir in the slightest when she moved and stretched. Tempting her luck she stretched up and pressed her lips to his own before groaning and standing up to get ready for the meeting.
She hummed softly as she dressed, unable to get the smile to leave her face. Quickly Vy glanced in the mirror and had to do a double take. Her hair fell in all different directions and reminded her a bit of porcupine quills. She cringed at the sight and reached for the comb immediately, forgetting about her need to dress.
Slowly, sensing the sudden space next to him, Raegar woke up, opening his eyes and sitting up immediately. Shit. She saw him asleep. How embarrassing...He had hoped to wake up before her and see her sleeping instead. Looking over, he saw her frantically brushing her hair, nude. "...Nice view."
Vyriel started at the sound of his voice and turned around, "You were asleep," she muttered before looking down at herself. Her face turned bright red and she hurried to grab her clothes.
Raegar gave a slight chuckle and a smirk as he watched her change. He was...in a good mood for once. For now. His expression was a mix of sleepy and satisfied. "No need to rush."
She scrunched her face and gave him a look of disapproval, "We have a meeting to get to and you need to make a call to Lynall." She raised an eyebrow and smirked. Vyriel walked over and kissed him softly before slipping the pants over her waist. "I did have fun though," she whispered in his ear. "I should reward you more often."
Raegar returned the kiss and smirked more. "Yo should definitely reward me more." No way would he turn that down. After a moment, he groaned and started to get dressed himself. "Let's get to this stinking meeting and I'll call that mut for you. And I'll do it without breaking the phone."
"It was broken before I touched it," she told him without looking in his direction. "Do you think you'll be able to handle Lynall? He's always been very flirtatious."
"Flirtatious?" This earned a grimace from him. That would be annoying to deal with. Even more annoying to deal with if this mutt was only flirtatious with her. "We'll just have to see if i can tolerate him at all, then."
Vyriel smiled at him, "I only ask you to play nice. Though he may not be as flirtatious with me as he was the last time. He was quite mad that I turned him into my wolf." She shrugged in reply before pulling a tank top over her head. "Keep in mind that you're the only one I've shared a bed with."
His almost pleasant expression had certainly turned sour now. Today was going to be a massive test in his restraint. Not only would he have to deal with the smell but this mutt might flirt constantly with Vyriel. Groaning, he ran a hand through his curls and straightened his shirt. "Let's just get this over with."
"As you command," she muttered with a bow before going to the kitchen. She rolled her eyes and shook her head. Vyriel glanced at the coffee pot and decided against trying it again. Instead she settled for using the water spout and trying to clear her head. At least she had warned him, right? It would have been worse if she hadn't.
"Hey." Foster greeted the angel with a slight smile. He'd woken up not long before and was snacking on the food he'd made the night before. Having seen her walk in, he'd even brought out the plate he'd saved for her. "...I made this last night fer everyone. Would ya like ta try some?" Fie was chirping as merrily as ever, perched on merlin's staff, which laid against the counter right next to Foster.
Vyriel turned around and gave him a lazy smile, "Thanks," she told him and sat down. "What happened last night? I heard a really loud crash last night."
"You're what happened," Lucifer told her with a disapproving gaze as he walked in the room.
"What did I do," she questioned as she looked between the two men.
Raegar walked in, face stuck in its perpetual half scowl, seeing the glare shot at him from Lucifer, he halted. "What?"
Looking from person to person, Foster smiled awkwardly and nervously, taking out the plate he made for Raegar. "Uh...I made yah some food too...if you want it."
Raegar made a face at the plate before looking at Vyriel, "Thanks, but that's not what I eat."
"No you just seem to have an appetite for my sister," Lucifer snarled back.
Vy's eyes widened to the size of dinner plates and she snatched her plate up, "Why don't we shout it from the damned rooftops. If anyone needs me i'll be in my office." She marched out with an angry scowl on her red face.
"Good going," Lucifer stated in Raegar's direction as if he had somehow caused the outburst.
Foster drew back at the commotion, frowning and feeling flustered. He'd meant to help not start it. Feeling stupid, he put the food back and sat back down, hoping there wouldn't be much more fighting. Was this a normal sibling thing?
Raegar stared at Lucifer in disgusted shock before grimacing. "I'm not the one she got mad at, Idiot. What is your problem with me? She's allowed to make her own decisions without her brother snooping."
"I have a problem with her body being your reward for getting me or did you think I missed that," Lucifer snapped back. "If you had enough decency to just do a job I wouldn't have a problem with you, but she's just a trophy to you isn't she?"
"She makes the first move, every time." Red eyes narrowed at the accusation. "And no. She's not just a trophy to me." He guessed his day of anger restraint started earlier than expected. He wasn't sure if he'd rather deal with the mutt or the nosy brother.
Lucifer glared back at him, "If you leave her broken at all or harm her in any way, Raegar...I will make you wish you had never been born at all." Lucifer stepped so he was looking down at his sister lover. "And if I find out you're lying i'll make sure your torment will be eternal and excruciating." Lucifer stepped away from him and his nose twitched a bit before he looked back at Foster. "You should go see her. I'm sure she'd prefer to see you. I believe you also had a discussion you wanted to have with her?"
Raegar refused to look away or back up as the larger man towered over him, no matter if a feeling of dread settled into his stomach. THis is the sort of shit he didn't want to deal with. "Yeah. Whatever. I'm not going to hurt her."
Foster jumped a bit when the attention was brought to him and he nodded quickly before hurrying to the office, staff clicking on the ground as he left and Fie chirping unhappily. He knocked nervously on the door and waited, listening.
Some sniffling was heard before the sharp sound of her voice, "Come in." Upon entering the office Foster found himself with a woman who wouldn't meet his gaze. Instead she sat staring at the plate of food as she ate. With her hand not occupied by her fork she twisted a finger through her hair, tangling and pulling at a few strands. She was not like the woman he encountered in the alley. This was a different type of broken. Those who didn't know her might think her a vulnerable woman in the state she was currently in.
"A-are ya okay?" How does one comfort an angel? Let alone one that apparently created half of what he was. "Is...Is the food good?" He closed the door behind him and sat in the seat closest to him. Pale eyes stayed on her as she ate, watching and trying to figure out how to get her acting like herself again. Seeing her like this seemed...wrong and it worried him.
"The food is great thank you," she told him before leaning back in her chair. A small smile found its way to her lips, but didn't touch her eyes. "I thought you were afraid of myself, why would you want me to be like that again," she whispered. Her jaw flexed as if she were chewing information.
Honestly, he was still afraid of her now, but he respected her and was grateful to her. Not to mention hoping they could become friends. Foster gave her a shaky smile, "I'm glad ya like the food. And...It doesn't take much for me to be scared of folks. I don't think there's anyone here I'm not at least moderately scared of... It doesn't mean I don't like yah or that I wanna avoid yah."
Her face softened and a small laugh escaped her lips, "This is why I always loved the fae. Would you like me to tell you the story of their creation?"
"If yah don't mind..." He moved to a seat closer to her, Fie singing a soft song on his head now.
"When I was first created light was not as it is now. It did not willingly give its rays to nature or humans. It was a wild thing, like millions of horses, seemingly untamable. Sometimes it would dance around Yaweh, Lucifer, and myself to tease us. A few rays danced too close around me one day allowing me to catch them. I gave the two forms, similar to humans and crafted them to tame the light and allow nature to flourish."
"Fae are made of wild light?" Sounded as logical as anything else he's been hearing. "Does that make me half light? Um...Just how did they tame the light and work with nature?" Foster tilted his head, taking in the information.
"The fae retained the ability to become light itself allowing them to communicate with the other rays. They were also given some magic allowing them to converse with nature. As fae bred their abilities slowly began to split. Some could speak only with birds others with flowers and others had multiple abilities."
This made sense to him. A lot of sense, surprisingly. He'd always thought it would have been more drastic. "Okay....Alright. I can....I can see myself being part fae, I think...."
"The fae were the first beings I ever created. They were the result of innocence and an unfortunate lack of foresight on my behalf. I didn't create them to become battle hardened. Or battle at all for that matter. They were created as beings of peace and harmony." Vyriel set her plate to the side and leaned forward. "I want you to understand that I do not expect you to participate in this war. In fact I don't want you to have anything to do with it. You are to be protected with the utmost care."
That didn't settle quite right with him. "...Can't there be a way I can help, somehow?" The thought of being protected and sheltered instead of out and exploring the world, it was stifling and depressing. He loved his job. He loved traveling from town to town, from city to village.
"I will not lock you up. I do not wish for your captivity only your safety little bird," she whispered gently. "You are free to roam where you'd like. Though I would rather you take someone with you, I know that you know how to call for me." She stood up from the desk and picked up the plate, "I should take this back to the kitchen."
She left, once more donning her sharp edges, though she lacked the darkness that often came at the same time. It was time for her to quit being so soft as preparations for war would soon be underway. She could not afford another moment like last night.
Foster stayed seated, feeling trapped regardless of the freedom she assured him. According to what she was saying, he'd have to be a burden to everyone and no help at all. Even the thought of that made him anxious. THis must mean he was likely to be targeted. Groaning, he pat Fie for comfort.
The kitchen, Vyriel found, made things no easier for her as Raegar and Lucifer were still glaring at one another as if the first to blink would be the loser. "Enough," she snapped at them her nerves frayed. She felt exposed, as if she had dropped all pretenses as a leader.
Given her experience so far she scoffed at the idea that she was a true leader. Instead it felt like a feeble game of King on the Hill. She crossed her arms as of hugging herself.
Raegar looked over at her, looking pissed off. "Ah, Great. Now I have to go call that mutt after dealing with this guy." He just wanted to get away from Lucifer at this point. He'd just woken up and he was exhausted already.
She shook her head at both of them before pushing herself away from the counter her face screwed up in sadness and irritation, "Don't bother. I'll go find him myself do whatever you want." She walked away from the two men. She wasn't sure if she wanted to cry again or just be alone. Not even her little bird could understand her at the moment.
Raegar frowned, watching her leave. He was clueless as to how to help her when she was upset. How was he supposed to do that? What did she want from him? How could he give it if she was always so damn confusing? His attention was no longer on Lucifer but instead where his lover had stormed out.
Lucifer leaned back in his seat, "You could do without the snide remarks and possibly going after her. In fact i'd definitely go after her this time. Wouldn't want Lynall taking advantage of her broken heart."
At the mere mention of Lynall, he glowered and stormed after her. He had no clue what to say to her and was afraid he'd likely make it worse, but there was no way he'd let Lynall make his moves.
Foster returned to the kitchen not long after Raegar had left, looking sad and worried. Had him talking to her help in the slightest at least? He'd seen her upset, still, seemingly on a mission.
Vyriel turned when she heard the sound of Raegar's footsteps behind her, "What do you want from me?" Her tone was exasperated, as if a million things weighed on her mind.
He was silent several moments, trying to figure out what she wanted and what to do. Finally, he muttered, "I'm sorry, okay? He just....Ugh. It doesn't matter what he was doing. I'm just sorry."
She crossed her arms, "I don't know what to say right now Rae. Sometimes you act sweet and other times I think you'd be happier if I never came back here. I've got all this..." she waved her arms around as if looking for a word she couldn't place. "I've got all this stuff and I feel it and I don't know what it means." She sighed, "As stupid as it sounds I don't want your jobs from me to make you miserable, so i'll do them myself."
"Dammit. I don't get you. I don't even get myself, honestly." He struggled to think of a way to say what he was trying to say. "I don't know what to say around you or to you. I'm just bad at this...this caring stuff. But I'm trying! I...don't mind doing things for you. Or rather I do but I don't mind doing them for you, specifically."
"All I want from you is honesty. Even if you think it will make me angry. Even if you think it will hurt me. I'm trying to learn here Raegar but I don't even know what I need right now." She let out a heavy sigh, "You and my brother hate each other, and he's being stupid, and my little bird wants to fly away because he was never meant to be locked in a cage and I...I have to find a way to protect everyone." She wrapped her arms around herself tighter than ever.
"Okay. I can do honesty. Stop trying to do things all on your own. That's what I think. Stop thinking you are alone. Cause you aren't and it's pissing me off so much......to think that you are trying to be what you don't want to be and that you might go out and do stupid ass shit cause of it." Raegar told her bluntly, staring her down as if doing so would make this less awkward and painful to say. "Stop trying to do stupid shit and stop thinking you're alone in this."
A slow clap sounded from the woods behind Vyriel, making her turn and ready herself for a fight. Lynall stood, tall and dark against the tree line, lean and imposing. The flash of a wide toothy smile could be seen by both of them. "A fantastic way to make a beautiful distressed woman feel better when all she needs is an embrace. Really...i've never seen you speak better in your life Raegar."
Raegar glared at Lynall, fuming with rage and embarrassment. This day just kept getting worse. How was he supposed to keep his temper in check when for one, he kept losing it, and two shit like this kept happening.
"Leave him alone, Lynall. I didn't bring you here so you could give him a hard time," Vyriel snapped before looking at him in an almost pleading manner.
"I was hoping you brought me to trade him in. After all, what kind of lover lets a woman like you hug herself?"
Lynall made his way over and tried to wrap his arms around her, earning a slap, "I told you to knock it off."
Raegar didn't bother hiding his smile at the slap. Almost made up for the stench of mutt. "Lay off her, do what she tells you, and just get out of here." He growled. Faster he did his stuff the quicker he leaves.
"Did I ask your opinion, leech," Lynall snarled back.
"It doesn't matter what you asked Lynall. It's about what I'm commanding. It's a dangerous job, but I need you and as many packs as you can round up to track down the men that are hunting supernatural beings. I need all of you to meet back here on Saturday for a meeting to discuss some...important business."
Lynall scowled at Raegar, before dropping his gaze to Vyriel. "As you command," he muttered before swooping down and kissing her forehead.
Raegar scowled right and hissed with restrained anger. If this mutt kept on like this, he was going to snap in no time at all.
Lynall swept away from her with a triumphant grin and left while Vyriel looked as if she had been deflated as soon as he was gone, she looked over at Raegar and slumped a bit, "I am sorry. I didn't know he was going to do that."
"Ugh. I hate how he just... touches you like you're his property." Raegar snarled. "Why do we have to work with this mutt again?"
She shook her head and stepped toward him, "He can smell what you can't. If we can track them it will be eas.." Vyriel trailed off and felt her gut wrench hard enough to drop her to her knees. "I have to find them," she whispered as she struggled to stand back up. She could feel it as if it were happening to her. The way the men slowly cut open the skin and pulled them apart bit by bit. Vy couldn't tell what type of child they were killing, or even where. Only that someone she loved was dying a horrible death.
Raegar's eyes widened when she dropped to her knees. "W-wait. What? What's going on? Find who? Are you okay?" What every this was, it was serious. Vy looked so grim, serious, and in pain. "...Take me with you. I'll help."
Vyriel reached desperately for her neck, as if trying to stop an injury from bleeding. She could feel blood pooling in her lungs and bubbling out her mouth, but nothing actually happened. "It's too late," she choked out, falling to her knees. She shook with sorrow and rage and the ground beneath them trembled as her tears began to fall. A scream ripped through Vyriel's throat like the sound of a wounded animal.
Still in the kitchen, Lucifer and Foster heard the scream. Eyes widening, their heads whipped the direction of the sound and Lucifer disappeared, only to reappear next to his screaming sister and stunned Raegar. Foster scrambled to make his way over, staff clicking frantically.
Dracul stopped beside Foster before rolling his eyes and grabbing the boy's hand. In an instant the two were near enough to see the woman and hear what was going on, "You had best stay back here," Dracul advised as he took in her face.
Once again she appeared sharp and severe. Her copper hair had turned a nasty shade of blackish red, like old blood. Vyriel scrambled to launch herself into the air, only to fall again as if weighted down by something. "They're killing them," she screamed. The angel choked on her sobs as she tried once more to launch herself into the air.
"Who's killing who?"Raegar questioned, looking distressed and trying to get close to her to help, not an easy task when she kept trying to launch. Foster stared in worry and confusion. Killing? Did she mean the halflings? Why did Vy look to be in such pain? He looked at the others before looking back at Vy, hands clutching merlin's staff hard.
"We saw this with Yahweh sometimes when one of his creatures was killed," Lucifer answered Raegar sadly. "Though...he was never this troubled by it." Lucifer caught Vyriel as she tried desperately to get to whatever was dying. Instead he held her close, "There's nothing we can do for them now." It didn't stop Vyriel from struggling to get free, or change the look of desperation on her face.
Seeing Vy like this nearly broke Foster's heart. This...She could feel her creations die. Did that mean she felt him get stabbed? No wonder she wanted to keep him safe. Pale eyes watched her struggle and scream in her brother's arms, a deep worried frown on his face. How terrible. How cruel. Fie stayed silent on his shoulder, watching the scene before them. A few moments later Fie took off and started to fly around the two angels before singing a sorrowful song to try and ease her pain and his companions worry.
Eventually Vyriel collapsed, sobbing on the ground. She didn't want to be touched by Lucifer, his touch felt like it was scalding her. Each time her brother would reach out to her she would slap his hand away leaving the man to look at her, lost. "Come inside Vyriel. Lynall will be back with your information soon," he whispered to her desperately.
Raegar watched the two of them, expression one of worry, not a shred of irritation to be seen. "Yeah. He'll be back and we'll all figure out how to save them, okay?"
Fie continued to sing, softer now, perched on a rock not far away, occasionally ruffling his wings and and hopping around. Foster cautiously drew near, violet eyes still on Vy and filled with worry and sympathy. He didn't know what to say but he was glad his little bird was trying to help.
Vyriel held out a hand to Raegar and allowed him to help her to her feet. "I want them to pay for what they've done to those poor souls," she whispered before holding a hand out to the little songbird. Her tears had become red, like blood during her transformation, but her features had softened once more, leaving bright red trails smeared along her innocent porcelain cheeks.
Fie fluttered immediately to her, resting on her hand, fluffing up to become softer. Still singing, he looked up at her before pressing his little head against her hand to comfort her. His own way of saying, "We are here for you in your time of grief."
Vyriel allowed Raegar and the others to lead her back into the house. "You should take her back to her room," Lucifer told Raegar. He only nodded awkwardly and led her away. She motioned for the little bird to go back to Foster.
When they reached the room Vyriel crawled into bed. "Please don't leave me," she whispered from the bed. The chill of his touch had been a comfort that her brother's touch had not.
"I won't leave." He sat on the bed next to her, close, not sure if she wanted to be touched or not, but close enough for her to reach out to, if not closer. "You aren't still in pain are you? Um, are you feeling better? Okay at least?" Being so worried was nauseating, stressful. Why did she have to go and be so vulnerable looking? What was he supposed to do? He felt like he was faking and forcing this kindness, even though his worry and care were real.
Vyriel shook her head at him and laid it in his lap, "It just aches now and I feel...empty." She reached for his hand and pulled it to her head, using her own hand to curl his fingers, tangling them in her hair. "I know you don't like doing this stuff, but...please? This once is all I ask. I just need to feel better, but I can't alone. Not this time." Her lip trembled and she tried to hide her face so he wouldn't see how broken she felt.
"...Alright." His hand gently ran through her hair, fumbling a bit, and he laid down next to her, close. His expression was a mix of nervous, worried, and his attempt at hiding both of those. "Don't blame me if I mess up, or something..."
Vyriel shook her head, "I don't think anything you could say or do could make this worse." She glanced up at him shyly for a moment before looking at the wall, thankful for his embrace. "I want them to know what I am. I want...I want them to fear me for what they've done," she finally whispered, cringing when she knew he'd yell at her. It wasn't going to make him happy...or make anything better, but she wanted to feel those people beg beneath her as she drained the life from them.
He wanted to yell at her...only he didn't want to. Not when she was so upset. It was fine to yell when he knew she would yell right back, but now? He couldn't. "....We'll get this all figured out and your creations saved. I'm sure you'll get your revenge in time... Just...." Ugh, how was he supposed to word this nicely?
She opened her mouth, ready to fight with him, but decided she didn't want to drive away his comfort. Instead she began to hum. It was a sad sort of melody and in it Raegar could feel all the sorrow she held, "Did you know that the world was once entirely dark? I thought the light would make things...better...I was wrong."
