Ch. 9: Map of Moments
Kol and Davina were working on a spell to counter-act the possession spell that Esther had placed on Cami, dipping a doll representing the target into a mixture in a cauldron, placed in a circle of salt, with yellow flowers and herbs scattered around as a power source.
Kol chanted something else other than Davina. "Pwoteje sa. Scandalum subsisto... subsisto venenatis. Impedit l'ecoulement. Pwoteje sa. Scandalum subsisto... subsisto venenatis. Impedit l'ecoulement."
Davina chanted as Kol chanted his incantation. "Se pa toi... Subsisto... Inquia l'ecoulement. Se pa toi... Subsisto... Inquia l'ecoulement. Se pa toi... Subsisto... Inquia l'ecoulement."
They stopped chanting.
"It's finished," Davina told him. "But I'm worried that it's not enough to protect Cami's body from Esther's magic."
"I might know a way to distract you from your troubled mind," Kol told her.
Davina smiled, shaking her head, looking away.
I approached, looking at Kol. "You can take this seriously, or I can lock you in your coffin like your brother Finn, if you'd prefer."
"No," Kol told me, looking from me to Marcel. "No, I'd prefer you two to booger off. This spell needs time to cook in peace."
"Cami doesn't have time," Marcel told him. "Esther can jump anybody into her body right now."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Kol said. "But she's not going to jump anybody, is she? She's going to jump Rebekah, who just happens to be miles away. But, fair dues, Marcel. Think I'd be a bit testy, too, if my old ex was about to jump into my new ex. I think that would be a bit, uh..."
Cami walked in. "Awkward?"
"I was going to say kinky, but..." Kol trailed off.
Marcel rushed up to Kol, gripping his shirt.
"I appreciate the shivarly, Marcel, but he'll have an easier time protecting me if he's alive," Cami told him.
Marcel let Kol go. "Keep working."
Marcel walked away.
Cami followed him.
I scoffed, shaking my head, walking away in the opposite direction.
**
Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah and Hayley had a plan to stop Esther.
They wanted to use Rebekah, lying about the fact that she wanted to take Esther's deal about taking a mortal body, but it was only so that they could take her down, and for Rebekah to stay in her own body. But if it went wrong, then we had to put Rebekah into someone unknown so that she could disappear.
But we needed Kol's help.
Marcel and I were talking to him in the courtyard now, standing on the balcony.
"I'd be happy to help," Kol told me.
"In exchange for what?" I asked. "From all the sneaking around today, you're clearly in need of something."
Kol looked at Marcel. "If you want me to find a new body for Rebekah, I want the Fauline diamond you stole from me back in 1914."
Marcel chuckled without humor. "What do you plan to do with it?"
"Does it matter?" Kol asked.
"Well, it will matter to Klaus," Marcel told him.
"You see, I could fib here," Kol told us. "But I want to be on the up about it. I need a weapon I can use to protect myself against Klaus, and the diamond helps me make it. It's not to kill him, simply a matter of self defense only to be used out of absolute necessity. It's a fair trade. I get free of the whackadoodle mum, I acquire the means by which to defend myself against the volatile brother should the need arise, and, uh, well, if all goes well, perhaps you'll let me near Davina without bodily harm. So should I call him back, or should one of you?"
**
Marcel, Davina and I stood or sat around in the courtyard.
Kol walked in. "Done! A per request. Miss Angelica Barker. Good cheek bones and a tummy you could bounce a quarter off." Cami walked downstairs. "She will be Rebekah's new body, instead of Cami."
"Who's Angelica Barker?" Davina asked.
"One of the vampire pontentials," I answered. "Had to turn her down. She was too lost."
"Does she know what's about to happen to her?" Cami asked.
"It's better when they don't know, love," Kol told her.
"Hopefully, we won't have to use her," Marcel told us.
"Hopefully," Kol repeated. "My mother is a wily and vindictive woman." He looked at Marcel. "Which is why I want something else for you."
"You're already getting the diamond," Marcel told him.
"Which I'm thrilled about," Kol told him. "But if I am to help you, I need access to my mother's hour glass, which is in the lycee. With my mother."
"So?" I asked.
"Well, I haven't been back in a while," Kol told us. "And the only way she won't suspect me is if I bring back the thing I was sent to find."
"And that thing is?" I asked.
"The white oak stake," Kol answered.
"Are you out of your mind?" I asked.
"Kaleb," Davina said.
Kol looked between us. "Look, it's the only way she's gonna trust me. She doesn't want to kill them, she just wants to make sure that the weapon doesn't fall into the wrong hands." No one was happy about this. "I swear, as soon as she's gone, I'll give it right back to Klaus."
"Like hell you will," Marcel told him. "Deal's off."
Klaus walked into the room. "Kol. Whatever grudges you hold against me, we are doing this for the good of our family. Do I have your word that, for once, you will honor that?"
Kol nodded. "You have my word, Nik. I swear on the fate of us all."
"I'll get the stake," Klaus told us, turning to leave.
Kol watched him go expressionlessly.
**
Davina, Marcel, Cami and I stood around a table, pouring salt around an hourglass.
"Kaleb will link this hourglass to Esther's," Davina told us. "Ours will mirror hers."
"When the last sand falls, Esther will try to jump Rebekah into you," I explained.
"That's when I will direct the spell from you to Esther," Davina explained. "It's meant to jam the signal just long enough to keep that kind of magic from working against anyone."
"If it works," Cami told us.
"It'll work," Marcel told her. "When Rebekah attacks, Esther won't be able to jump her into you or anyone else."
"And we're sure Kaleb is on board?" Cami asked.
"He's on board," Marcel answered. "He's a theif and a liar, but like Elijah, he doesn't give his word lightly."
**
The sand started to fall in the hourglass.
"It's working," I told them.
Cami stood, watching the sand fall.
**
The sand continued to fall.
"Now?" I asked.
Davina shook her head. "Not yet."
**
The last of the sand fell.
"Now," Marcel told her.
Davina started to chant, eyes closed in concentration. "Scen ta lum ves victa per vatis imparret." Cami started to shake, convulsing violently. "Scen ta lum ves victa per vatis imparret."
"Cami," Marcel said worriedly.
Cami continued to shake.
**
The hourglass exploded.
Cami fell into Marcel's arms, unconscious.
**
I looked at Davina. "Did it work?"
Davina was scared and confused. "I have no idea."
**
I was in the room where we had kept Finn locked away in the coffin, holding the broken padlock in my hand, looking up at the open coffin with no Finn inside.
Finn was gone.
I walked into the living room.
Cami was lying unconscious in a chair.
Davina was kneeling next to her worriedly, stroking her hair back. Marcel stood nearby.
Klaus walked into the room, carrying an unconscious Rebekah to the couch opposite of them, lying her down.
"Cami's not awake, either," Davina told him.
"When she's up, we need to get her out of the Quarter," Marcel told us. "She's not safe here."
"Somebody busted Finn out," I told them.
"My mother is using Mikael to do her dirty work," Klaus told us. Cami gasped awake, looking around. Klaus stepped closer. "Camille?"
Cami exhaled in relief. "I suddenly love that stupid name."
Davina smiled, wrapping her arms around Cami.
Marcel looked relieved, turning to Rebekah worriedly, kneeling next to her.
Klaus looked at Rebekah in slight worry. "I couldn't stop the spell."
Klaus started to walk away.
"Please tell me that your mother's dead," Marcel told him.
"Rebekah and I took extra precautions," Klaus told us. "Esther is exactly where she needs to be."
Klaus turned around, walking out of the room.
**
Esther had died with vampire in her system. You couldn't be both witch and vampire. So she couldn't body-jump. She could just either die or become another vampire.
Klaus, Marcel, Kol and I stood around Rebekah in her coffin.
Kol handed Klaus the white oak stake. "A promise is a promise."
Klaus took the white oka stake from him.
We looked at Rebekah's unconscious form.
If she wasn't in her own body, and if she wasn't in Angelica Barker, then where the hell was she?
