Rebound, But Newfound {16}

“Ayo,” I greeted as I slid into Zeke’s car.

Zeke smiled. “Hi Tommy,” he said and leaned over, giving me a rough kiss. He pulled out of my driveway and took off down the street. He reached over and took my hand in his.

“So I don’t even get a little hint as to where it is that we’re going?” I asked. Zeke smirked and shook his head.

“Surprise means surprise, Tommy. Have some patience.”

“I hate surprises,” I grumbled, pouting. I hated to be surprised. I was one of those people that always liked to know what was going on.

“I love when you pout. You look so damn cute,” Zeke said, leaning over and kissing me a quick kiss at a stop sign. He continued on down the road, and I watched our surroundings carefully to see if I could guess where he was taking me.

“Tommy, why don’t you pick a CD? I picked a few mixes. Check the backs on them for what songs they have,” Zeke said casually, a smug look in his eyes.

“You’re evil,” I whined, grabbing the CDs and taking my eyes off our surroundings to check the backs. I picked the one that had songs I liked the most and put it in. I looked out the window and groaned. Zeke was taking back roads, and I had no idea where we were anymore. Zeke had that smug look in his eyes still.

“We’re not friends anymore,” I grumbled.

“Are we still boyfriends?” he asked curiously. I nodded and he smirked. “Good. Then I don’t care if we’re friends or not.” He squeezed my hand.

I rolled my eyes and relaxed against the seat as the music played. Since I was already lost as to where we were, I just shut my eyes and listened to the song playing.

“It’s alright you’ll be fine baby I’m in control. Take the pain, take the pleasure, I’m a master of both. Closer your eyes, not your mind, let me into your soul. Imma work it ‘til you’re totally blown.”

Hm…I wonder what Zeke is like in bed. He seemed like he’d be so shy, but I knew that boy could get a little wild. Oh, how I knew.

“You have a small smile on your face. What are you thinking about?” Zeke asked suspiciously, glancing the radio and then back to me.

I opened my eyes and grinned at him. “You know what I’m thinking about. I’m thinking about you, me, and the back room in the library,” I said with a shrug. Zeke blushed and changed the song.

I grinned wider. “Aw, someone is getting awful red,” I teased.

“Shut up,” Zeke mumbled, blushing harder.

“Do I make you blush that hard Zeke?” I asked, shifting closer to him and letting my breath blow on his neck. Zeke shivered and his hands tightened on the steering wheel.

“Well? Do I?” I asked, nibbling at his ear a little.

Zeke swerved on the road a little and straightened the car out. He playfully elbowed me, his face so red I thought his head my freaking blow up.

“Tommy stop! I’m driving!” he whined and laughed a little.

“Sorry, was I distracting you?” I asked. Zeke rolled his eyes and nodded.

“Just a little,” he said sarcastically.

“Maybe I’ll stop if you tell me where we’re going.”

“In that case…” He bent his head so that I had better access to bite his ear. I pouted again and Zeke got the smug look back in his eyes as his face cooled down to its normal color.

“We’re almost there. Just hang in a little longer Tommy. You can make it,” he said and laughed, taking my hand again.

I leaned back against the seat as Audacity Of Dope by Let’s Get It played out of the speakers. I closed my eyes again and rested my head on the window.

                                                                                                ***

                “Tommy!”

I groaned lightly and cracked my eyes open as Zeke shook me. I rubbed my eyes sleepily and blinked a few times as Zeke watched me in amusement.

“Hey sleepyhead. We have officially arrived at part one of our date,” he said, getting out of the car. He opened my door for me a minute later and held his hand out to me.

I took it and he pulled me out of the car, shutting the door for me and locking the car. I stretched a little, cracking my neck and popping my shoulders.

I looked up and saw we were at a small, familiar restaurant. I glanced at Zeke and raised an eyebrow. “Cliché?” I asked.

Zeke glanced at me nervously. “Is it? Do you not like it? We can go somewhere else,” he said, dropping his eyes to his feet.

I squeezed his hand reassuringly. “I love it Zeke. This is where we met each other,” I said, cracking a small smile as we entered. I nodded at one of the tables. “That table. I was only two, but I remember this place.”

The soccer team ate here every year after the tournament. The team had been doing that ever since Mikey and Sammy had been on it when they were 5 and 4. The first dinner they’d ever had here, when I was 2, my parents had brought me to. I remember only a little, but I did remember Zeke whacking me in the head with the menu. I had kicked him in the shin and he had laughed at me.

                Good times, good times.

The waiter came over. “Do you have a reservation?” he asked us.

Zeke nodded. “Baker,” he said. The waiter checked a list before nodding at us to follow him. He took us to a small table and gave us our menus. He took our drink orders before leaving us alone to go over the menus.

I rubbed my head and Zeke glanced at me curiously. “I can almost feel you whacking me in the head with the menu,” I grumbled, realizing how thick the menus here were. Jeez, Zeke could’ve cracked my skull open.

Zeke blushed. “I was 4. I didn’t know any better. You were just Mikey and Sammy’s little brother, and you took my fork,” he said and frowned. “Fork stealer.”

“I was two. It was shiny. Do the math,” I grumbled.

Zeke reached across the table and took my hand, smiling. “And 13 years later, we’re dating. Maybe it was a love tap.”

I rolled my eyes. “I remember my mom freaked out a little,” I said, remembering how she had gasped and moved to get me away from the violent 4 year old Zeke.

“And then you kicked me in the shin and I laughed at you because you thought you were so tough,” Zeke said and laughed at the memory.

“I was tough for a 2 year old. And apparently smart enough to remember that day. I think I secretly plotted revenge against you for, like, 5 years,” I said with a shrug.

Zeke laughed. “Well, you never took revenge on me, but you took revenge for me. Remember when I was 11 and you were 9? That kid broke my nose during a game, and you ended up tripping him and spraining his ankle right after. You were a pissed little kid,” he said, smiling fondly at that memory.

I smirked, remembering that day and how pissed I had been that someone had hurt Zeke. I think even back then, at 9 years old, I was starting to get feelings for him. I looked at Zeke, suddenly startled at how much I really loved him.

I leaned over the table and kissed him deeply. “I love you Zeke,” I said quietly when I pulled away from him. I picked up my menu and pretended to be interested in that so that he wouldn’t have to respond.

The waiter came back and we placed our orders. I sipped my soda, not having my menu to break the awkwardness. I tried to think of something to say to put Zeke at ease. I didn’t want him to feel awkward when we were supposed to be feeling better about our relationship.

“Zeke,” I said, deciding I needed to get this out of the way first. “I don’t want you to feel like you have to love me just because of what we did. That wasn’t my intention at all. I shouldn’t have let things get that far, but I wanted you and I was being selfish. Don’t feel like you have to love me and stay with me just because of that.”

Zeke gave me a weak smile. “I wasn’t feeling like that Tommy. No offense. If I knew I was going to feel like I had to love you and stay with you because of it, I wouldn’t have let it get that far. But I knew I wanted it, and I already knew I wanted to be with you. So calm down.” He leaned over and kissed me gently.

I smiled softly at him. I really did love him. I would fight for Zeke. I would fight for him even if he gave up on me. It would hurt, but I would do it because I knew I was falling deeply in love with Zeke.

The waiter brought our food and we ate in comfortable silence for a while. “So you said this was part one?” I asked, wanting to know what else I was in for tonight. Gah, I hated surprises. They drove me crazy and Zeke knew it.

Zeke smirked and nodded. “Yes, I did say that. There’s more to our date than just dinner. But you’re just going to have to learn how to be patient and wait for the rest of the date Tommy,” he said, his smirk getting wider when I pouted.

“Tommy, you need some patience,” Zeke said, laughing as we watched me.

“I have patience. I just hate surprises,” I grumbled.

“Well, get eating and stop worrying about it. Jesus you must hate Christmas,” he said.

I shrugged. “You’re right. I do. Because I hate surprises, and everyone knows it,” I said in annoyance. Even when I was a little kid, my parents wouldn’t make us wait very long to go down and open presents on Christmas mornings. I got impatient and when I got impatient, I got irritable. Irritable Tommy was the last thing anyone wanted to deal with.

We finished eating and Zeke paid for the both of us before we left. Zeke took my hand and pulled me away from the car with a wink.

He led me down the street for a while. I looked around, trying to guess where we were going but couldn’t figure it out.

“Tommy, stop trying to guess your surprise,” Zeke said and laughed.

I sighed but stopped. Zeke’s laugh was so damn cute. I loved when he laughed, and he did it a lot. Zeke was such a happy person. He got extremely violent when provoked, but he was just an optimistic person the majority of the time. A cute boy who loved to laugh. I loved it.

                “We’re here,” Zeke said, stopping.

I looked up and rolled my eyes, giving Zeke a small smile. “Mini golfing and ice cream?” Zeke nodded and blushed.

I bent on my tip toes and pressed my lips to his, pulling my hand away so I could wrap my arms around his neck. He placed his hands on my hips and kissed me firmly and lovingly.

He took my hand and paid for us before we started on the golf course. I smirked at Zeke. “Help me,” I said.

Zeke came over and wrapped his arms around me. He kissed my neck before taking my hands and pulling my arms back. He guided my swing and I watched as the ball sailed effortlessly for a hole in one.

“You know Tommy, I think I recall you being incredible at mini golf when we went last summer,” he breathed in my ear, a grin on his face.

“I think I recall you shutting the fuck up and kissing me,” I mumbled, turning my head and pressing my lips to his.

We continued to go through the mini gold course like that. Neither of us seemed to remember that our relationship was constantly under strain and question as we had fun together. We joked around, talked, kissed, and just had a damn good time.

When we had finished golfing, we grabbed ice cream. We ate, Zeke’s arm around me lovingly the whole time. When we had finished, we held hands and began to walk towards the car again, the sun beginning to set.

“Tommy, come here,” Zeke said, pulling me over to a building. I followed him curiously as we went behind the building.

It led off to a set of rocks that went down to a beach. Zeke pulled me onto the rocks and we carefully made our way until we found a smooth one to sit on together to watch the sunset.

“Look at that sunset,” Zeke said as the sun began to disappear behind the water. I nodded and Zeke wrapped his arms around me.

He dug in his pocket and pulled out his phone. He turned on the camera smiled at me. “A nice cliché kissing picture to finish off this nice cliché night?” he offered. I rolled my eyes and nodded.

We positioned ourselves against the sunset and shared a kiss as Zeke took a picture. We looked at it and I smiled softly. It had come out amazing. Zeke sent it to me and wrapped his arms back around me, kissing my forehead.

“I love you Tommy,” he whispered.

And in that moment, I knew he was telling the truth.
