"I..." I swallowed drily, Ray's hands wrapped around mine were as cold as ice, tightly gripping onto my hands as if to prevent my escape. '2 hours...' I gulped. 'Can I make it? Will I even be able to leave without him?' "Okay, Ray. I'll leave it to you." I smiled and the ravenhead's eyes widened in relief, his grasp on my hands lessening, giving me a little leeway to move.
Taking my chance I grinned, and acting on impulse, leaned forward and planted a quick kiss on the ravenhead's cheek. I then turned on my heels and ran while he was distracted, slamming the library door open. "SIKE, *SSHOLE!" I yelled, flipping him off as I turned to face him from the doorway before running down the hallway like satan was on my heels to grab my things.
-----
Ray watched Y/N go, his eyes wide, hand touching his cheek gently in shock before snapping back to reality. His grey-green eyes went wide and he cussed. "Sh*t-!!" He yelled, with a loud sigh. "WAIT UP Y/N, YOU BUTT-!!" He roared, slamming the library door back open and chasing after the albino girl.
He ran down the halls in a flurry, quickly turning down hallway after hallway to reach Y/N's room. "Y/N-!!" He shouted, reaching for the door handle, just as his shirt collar was grabbed by and yanked away from the door. "Let go-!!" The ravenhead shouted, reaching behind his head to grab the hand clutched onto his shirt that kept him from moving forward.
"Can't do that, Ray." The adult behind him muttered, his grip on the ravenhead's white collar tightening.
"Yuugo, you b*stard, let go of me-!!" Ray yelled, spinning on the adult, a deadly expression on his face, his hands gripping the arm of the adult which clutched onto his shirt tightly. But when he saw the expression on the adult's face his own anger faltered, hie voice catching in his throat. "Y-You don't want Y/N to make it either, do you? So let me stop her-!!" Ray yelled, eyes blurring slightly in tears.
Yuugo pursed his lips. "As much as I'd like to let you go in there and stop her... you and I both know that'd only make things worse-"
"I don't care!!" Ray yelled, his tears finally falling as he boiled in rage. "Let me go!!" He shouted, fists slamming into the adult's chest. Yuugo's eyes crinkled at the ravenhead's sight as he switched his grip to the ravenhead's wrist.
"Let go-!!" The black-haired boy yelled, trying to pry Yuugo's grip off of his arm. Yuugo's grip faltered for a moment as Ray appeared to him much like a desperate child throwing a tantrum. The ravenhead spun, ripping his wrist from Yuugo's grip and reaching towards the handle, fingertips brushing against the cold metal-
"It's you who needs to let go, Ray." The adult's voice was low and pained and the ravenhead paused, his hand hovering over the handle, trembling slightly. "If you really lo- care about Y/N, you'll let her go." Yuugo repeated, pushing as he watched his ravenhead's actions with a fatherly eye.
Ray stared at the door, his glance shifting between the floor to his hand hovering above the handle. "I... can't..." He murmured, but despite his words, he made no move to open the door, even after minutes had gone by. After the timeframe where he could stop Y/N passed, he began to tremble, tears falling down his face. "I failed..." He muttered, staring at the ground, his eyes wide as his hand fell to his side.
Yuugo swallowed before hugging the ravenhead, who turned towards him slowly, resting his head against the adult's chest as he stared to the ground, peering through the tears which blurred his eyes. "Why does it always have to be her?" He whispered, his voice heavily resembling a normal teenager as it cracked under the immense pressure of his emotions.
Yuugo swallowed his own tears, looking up to the ceiling as he placed his hand gently on the ravenhead's head in a comforting manner, albeit patting it awkwardly. "I don't know..." He answered Ray's question with a sigh, blinking any tears that sprung from hiding away rapidly.
Lucas, emerging from hiding along with the other children, placed a hand reassuringly on his friends shoulder. "It's manly to cry." He hummed with a small smile.
"Shut up." Yuugo muttered, but he allowed a few silent tears to fall down his cheek.
-----
I blinked in surprise as I slammed my door open, out of breath, and saw Emma standing ready in my bedroom along with Anna, Poppy, and Reina. Anna closed the door quickly and Reina brought over an extra jar of golden water, sticking it into my bag before handing it to me while Poppy handed me an unbloomed Vida flower.
"Eh?" I murmured, looking at them in surprise. My eyes widened as I watched Emma wave to me from outside the open glass pane, which sent a cool breeze in my direction. I waked towards her curiously, grabbing my bag from Reina's hands and slinging it over my shoulder.
"Good luck." Poppy smiled, handing me the vampiric flower and closing my hands around it tightly.
Gilda emerged from the side room and handed me a clean knife before pushing me towards the window. "No drugs." She smiled with a hint of sarcasm.
"At least not counting weed." I grinned, taking the knife from her readily while Reina sighed and Gilda facepalmed.
Emma smiled. "We're counting on you, Y/N." She rested her hand on my shoulder, tilting her head slightly with a closed-eyed smile. "Come back safe. And please, for the love of god, don't joke about being zooted while making the promise. Or else I might really pull a Ray."
"Yeah, don't do that please." I snorted before grabbing the knife from Emma's hands and waving goodbye, quickly exiting the tree-hideout, riding my rope shortcut down to the bottom.
I hopped off of the rope and dashed outside, checking my watch. "10:10 pm..." I found a smaller clearing closer to the base where the still-barely full moon was visible from up above in the cloudless sky.
Setting down the jar of golden water and cracking open the lid, I pulled out the knife from my pocket, dragging it across the closed wound on my palm, letting my warm blood drip into the golden water, the red colour mingling with the golden. I then inserted the Vida flower and my heartbeat slowed as I waited anxiously for it to bloom.
At last, the flowers spread, absorbing my blood and turning a bright red colour. I touched a flower hesitantly, the petals soft in my hands.
And then, in an instant, the golden doors lay in front of me, on the other side of the small clearing. I walked towards it hesitantly, my heels gently scuffing against the ground.
I touched the doors gently before pushing it open slowly, the doors swinging open surprisingly easily despite their heavy look.

I found myself laying down in an empty room of blinding white. "What...?" I murmured, sitting up. "So this is what was generated by my subconsciousness...?" I murmured, looking around into the endless nothing. Can it really be called a room if the empty walls go on forever? "Damn. My brain must be empty after all-"
"Quite on the contrary, Y/N." A voice echoed throughout the room, seemingly without a source. I blinked, shivers cascading down my spine at the familiar sound of 'him'.
"What do you mean?" I asked as the voice bounced around in my head, a faint echo repeating itself.
"Rather... this place is...struggling to generate the contents of your subconsciousness, likely because, in my assumption... it is rooted elsewhere."
I blinked. 'Elsewhere? Gee, I wonder why.' I snorted. "Great. So all I need to do is change that?" I asked the disembodied voice of 'him'. 'Why not show yourself, you little pr*ck. I've still got a bone to pick, hmm?'
"You catch on quick. Yes. Your test is to... switch the root of your subconsciousness. Although I don't know how you could do that... or rather, how you're in the situation you are in in the first place..."
I sighed. "This may take a while." I muttered, taking a seat on the ground. 'Then, I suppose some part of me is still holding onto my old life as...me... even though I already died. So, I suppose I need to give myself a vibe-check and realize that that me is...dead.' I blew out my cheeks. 'Jesus f*ck, that's pretty dark. Always serves as a plus, though.'
I took a comfortable position seated on the ground and closed my eyes, slowing my breaths and calming myself. 'Ok... so, for starters... maybe stop talking to yourself. If "he" can hear your thoughts, he probably thinks you're crazy.' I thought, opening one eye slowly, expecting a response from the demon as he was likely listening to my internal dialogue. 'Jesus. Ok, so step one, stop getting distracted. Deep breaths, Y/N.'
I closed my eyes and began trying to transfer my "roots". Instead of thinking about reading and watching The Promised Neverland, I thought about my real experiences in this reality thus far. The amount I found myself settling on thoughts of Ray was...somewhat flustering, but I soon got used to it. I had to let go of all sorts of things- the hardest ones being unfinished Manga, Anime, maybe Webtoons, Manhwua, and the like. Because who needs family and friends, y'know? Just kidding. No matter how much I fought with them... it was hard to let go those ones too in the end.
And at last, I felt it click. Just a small change that barely went noticible. I opened my eyes slowly, brushing a tear away that had formed in the corner of my eye. 'Oh, man. I'm really going to miss all those animes...' As I opened my eyes slowly they focused on completely different surroundings.
"Congratulations, Y/N. Then, I leave the rest to you. Good luck~"
My surroundings where... I blinked as the bright sun shone above me, my eyes squinting. Grass swayed at my feet. "A field?" I wondered, standing up and looking around. "No way... these surroundings... it's plant 3 at Gracefield??" I blinked, walking towards the massive house as it loomed in the distance. I was wearing those white clothes and the wind blew around me, sending a chill down my spine from the bitter breeze. I turned my eyes towards the chill, catching sight of the gate of horrors in the distance. I began to walk towards it, giving in to my curiosity, finding myself there in only 3 steps. I shook my head a little as the gate opened, beckoning me inside.
I swallowed dryly, walking on the wet bricks as water dripped down from leaky pipes. "Yeah, Y/N. Good idea. Walk right into the scary place of horrors your conscious and subconscious self decided was necessary to see. Knowing my own mind... this is a bad idea..." My heart thudded in my ears despite my nonchalant attitude. I shivered at the sight of the truck parked up ahead. 'It's not real, Y/N.' I scolded myself, but curiosity got the better of me and I reached towards the curtain, my hand ice cold as I drew it back gently, squeezing my eyes shut, expecting the sight of a dead body.
But there was none. There was a sudden thud behind me and I spun, glancing behind me to see nothing but an empty hallway, a puddle of water gathering on the brick as water continued dripping to it. I exhaled, turning back to the truck slowly, rubbing the side of my head with a sigh.
"F*CK!!" I yelled at the sight of the body, clad in clean white clothes, a blooming vida flower speared through the heart. The s/c skin, hair/type h/c hair, the familiar e/c eyes wide open in shock. I took a step back at the sight of my old body, laying dead in the back of the truck. "What the hell-"I took another step back and my foot was stopped by something below my heel. I flinched then turned slowly, gazing down at the sight that I had nearly stepped on, then falling onto my butt.
"Emma?" I asked, reaching a trembling hand towards the motionless ginger girl, laying on the ground, a vida flower piercing her heart unbloomed, her eyes staring openly into space, no life behind them. "Emma?" I asked again, shaking the ginger's shoulder slightly. Her bright green eyes suddenly widened, life sparking in them and she let out a gasp. Those dull eyes slid to me, gazing into mine as her eyebrows scrunched together.
"Sorry..." She murmured, reaching a hand up to my face. "Who are you?"
My blood ran cold. "E-Emma, it's me! You didn't forget, did you-" I choked, grasping her hand. It was cold. As I looked back into the green eyes they fell lifeless, my heart choking my words. I couldn't breathe. 'It's not real. She didn't make the promise. It's not real, Y/N. Focus.' I scolded myself, holding my hands over my ears as I tried to push the image of my dead friend out of my head.
"Get down!!" A shout ripped through my focus as a body slammed me into the ground. I winced and opened my eyes as Yuugo bent down and grabbed onto my hand, pulling me up then leading me through a dark tunnel.
"What-" I stuttered as Yuugo suddenly flung me behind him, throwing his arms out protectively, raising his gun at the enemy who stood before him. "Who-" I flinched at the sight of Andrew as he levelled his gun at his redhead captive, Lucas wincing as the gun the other man held jammed into his head roughly.
"Y/N, run-!!" Yuugo yelled, whipping his head around to me, blood gushing down a wound on his forehead.
"Yuugo, what's going on-" I forced out, staring at the bloodied adult as he bled out of several wounds in his torso and his legs.
"Get out of here!" The man roared once again and I flinched at his tone, turning on my heel in fright and escaping through the backup entrance for the shelter. 'What... just what exactly is this...?!'
As soon as I got a 10 meters away from the entrance to the shelter there was a rumble as the ground blew behind me, the area where Yuugo and Lucas were caving in as smoke rose from the fissure. I fell back onto my butt again and stared at the explosion site. "No..." I murmured, my throat turning dry. I stared to my hands where a bomb trigger lay, my thumb pressing down on the button. "No... I killed them... I failed again!" I sobbed, hands trembling as I grasped my white locks in my hands. 'It's not real. It's not real! Snap out of-!!'
"Y/N, we're counting on you!!" Cheerful voices chorused and I released my hands from my ears and turned to the noise, seeing a group of all the children I had saved, smiling at me brightly as we stood in the middle of the house back at the hideout. "We counted on you!!" They cheered again, all happy smiles.
But my heart dropped to my feet as I watched their happy, smiling faces melt off, dripping off of their skulls like sludge. "We counted on you-" They repeated again, Emma, only with a horrific, dripping frown gripping my by the shoulders as she leaned in close to my face. "So how could you fail us again?"
I blinked, staring into her soulless eyes as her grip on my arms tightened so much it began to hurt. "I- I didn't-"
"We would've done just fine without you." A voice behind gurgled and I spun to it as Norman spoke- or a terrifying creature that resembled him spoke, stooping to my level make level eye contact with the soulless pits of his eyes. "So why'd you need to interfere?"
I swallowed, frozen in place. 'It's not real, Y/N...' I tried to tell myself again as the children I'd been trying to save continued to approach, closer, and closer, until it felt like they were going to suffocate me. 'But it may as well be...-'
"Snap out of it-!!" A clear voice yelled, cutting through the chaos, gripping onto my wrist and dragging me out of the crowd of bodies. "What the hell are you doing, dumb*ss?!" Ray yelled as he dragged me away from the ghoul-like children, dashing in a fast sprint, dust flying out behind us. He spun to look at me, an angry expression on his face. "I chose to leave it to you in the end, and this is what you're doing? C'mon, Y/N!! You even already knew the trick beforehand!! Get your sh*t together!!" He yelled as we ran through countless doors that lead to the same place repeatedly.
I blinked before snorting, coming to a stop in the middle of a room resembling the library. "Of course, even here, you're my lifeline." I muttered, staring up at the cloudless sky as the army of children- if you can call them that, advanced.
I took a deep breath, gripping onto the ravenhead's hand as I closed my eyes. 'This place is affected by both my subconsciousness and consciousness. As Emma said, all I need to do is become my childlike self, right? Become the person I could be when I could imagine... when I could do anything. I suppose that time would be whenever... I was reading this manga in the old world, right? Thinking what it would be like... back when everything was new and special, when everything was fascinating, the line between possible and impossible were blurred...
Rewind, isn't that what Emma said? Go back to those times when I wasn't restricted by my desire to save everyone... Hey... I wonder... Am I really okay with... do I really want to leave them all behind... to make the promise..?'
Before I could finish that thought, my surroundings finally changed. My eyes opened to a cube with sides 10 ri long. I sighed, a small smile spreading over my face. "Damn, those goop faces where scary as f*ck- almost as scary as my subconscious mind, but at least I somehow made it out of there." I began walking towards the hypercube with a spherical black hole inside. "Now, we're just going to approach this with the mindset of 'I've managed to survive this long without losing a single other life, which should be admittedly impossible, therefore anything, even something breaking every law of physics is, possible.' After all, as far as Gilda and the others are concerned, I'm an existence that denies their original perception of the universe." I nodded with a shrug, reaching my hand to touch the black hole, my eyes sparkling in amazement at the bone-chilling sight, my fingers grazing the pure black at last...
I blinked and was suddenly standing in another place, staring into the sun as it set over the horizon of night and day. "Take that, Ray!! I made it on time-" I spun around in search of 'him', finally catching sight of him in his old man form to my left. "Right???" I squeaked nervously, as the time on my watch read "00:00"..
"Indeed. Mere minutes before the deadline, but you did make it." He hummed in amusement.
I let out a loud sigh of relief, taking a seat on the floor of night underneath me. "Then you'll let me make the promise?" I asked quickly, my stomach flip-flopping with nerves.
If I could see 'his' face I'm certain he'd be smiling a grin that would me make every single decision that lead me here. "Of course." He responded with a smile. "So, what is it a girl with an 'invisible past' like you going to wish for?" The demon, in child form, asked curiously. For only a moment I saw the fleeting image of human curiosity in his demeanour, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared. "A reminder that I will be asking for a reward on equal terms."
I raised my eyebrow. "I know. And as for what I wish for... It's the same promise Emma was going to make. I want all cattle children to cross over to the human world. And after that, I want it to be completely impossible for anyone to pass from the demon world."
He leaned back, staring at the sky. "Alright. Of course, then there's the matter of the reward. Are you ready to hear it, Y/N?"
'He' asked, turning back to face me. Now into his adult form, he towered above me and caused me to crane my neck to look up to him.
I swallowed dryly, my heart thudding in my chest. "Yes. Hit me with your best shot." I hummed, attempting to prepare myself for his request...
Although his request would turn out to be nothing like I possibly could've imagined.
I blinked as he finished his explanation. "You...want...what?" I asked, my throat dry as paper. 'But that's...not anything like...'
'He' morphed into an old man, floating in open air as several glowing koi fish continued to surround him. "Allow me to continue explaining a little further for your understanding then, Y/N." He spoke with an excited giggle, unfitting of his old and solemn appearance.
"...oh." I murmured, eyes wide. I stuttered after I finished listening in silence, frozen in place even minutes after. For even after his 'further explanation', I couldn't say I understood the reasoning of the demon any further.
"I see." I swallowed, my hands trembling. I stuffed them into my pockets, giving him a small smile. "Well then, I suppose there's nothing for me to do but accept."
'He' let out a childish giggle, lacing his fingers together. "Excellent. Then, see you later, Y/N.
