III
"Hey Poe?" My voice quiet, still shocked up from our previous conversation with the General and Luke.
He stopped and turned around, "Yeah, whats up?"
I looked down and played with my hands, "Could we go for a ride?"
"Uh yeah sure let me ask if we can borrow a transport car."
He went to turn around but I grabbed his arm and he looked at me again, this time confused, "I mean in a ship. I want to see something other than trees."
Instantly his face lit up, "Of course!"
"Poe!" I laughed as he grabbed my arm tightly and ran to his X-Wing. The metal surface felt cool against my fingers, every little scratch and dent showed just how many battles he has been apart of. I walked around to where Poe was getting things ready and I heard BB-8's beeps from the distance and turned to greet the orange and white droid.
"Hey buddy, ready to go for a ride?"
He beeped once more and went into position to get raised into the ship. I laughed and wrapped my arms around Poe, placing my head on his shoulder.
"I'm excited and nervous."
Poe turned to face me, "You'll be fine. I'm the best pilot in the Resistance. Plus you should trust me, I am your boyfriend and all."
I stuck my tongue out and he reciprocated that action. He hooked the fueling nozzle and did a few more checks before helping me into the small space behind that pilots chair. It was meant for baggage but I seemed to fit perfectly. I fastened some random safety straps into something like a seatbelt, and waited for Poe to climb in as well. Soon enough his face popped up and his body followed, two helmets in hand.
Handing me one he smiled, "One for you."
We both pulled the helmets over our heads and before long he had prepared everything for takeoff.
"It may be a little bumpy back there for a minute. Sorry there isn't an actual seat, these ships weren't made for two." He apologized.
I put my hand on his shoulder, "I'm fine don't worry, it's nice and cozy."
My gaze turned to the windows and I watched as the trees disappeared and the sky changed colours. My heart was pounding but I had always wanted to fly with Poe, even if I got to see what lay beyond the atmosphere from a baggage storage. Before long the ship flew smoothly and we left the vicinity of the planet.
"Wow." Space was even better than I had pictured. In the distance there were twinkling stars and the idea of other plants excited me.
Poe laughed and flicked some switches, "It never gets old. We can't be out long but I promise I'll take you out again sometime."
"I'd like that."
We rode around and Poe showed off some of the tricks he learned from his mother when he was younger. To say I was tired was an understatement. From the beauty of space to the heated conversation in the control room, I was ready to rest.
I yawned and moved away from the window, "I'm getting kinda tired."
"Black Leader to base, preparing for landing."
I felt myself drifting in and out of consciousness. Until finally my body shut down, exhausted from the day.
I wake up in a panic, where am I? Scanning my surroundings I realize I'm in my room and I calm down. But Poe is not in the bed with me.
"Poe?" I call into the darkness.
My feet hit the floor and I turn on a lamp, "Poe?"
Again, no answer. I put on my boots and leave the room. The night air pierced my skin, but I had to find Poe. I wandered around the base looking everywhere. I walked past the door to the control room only to notice it was slightly ajar, voices coming from inside.
"You can't be serious." Poe!
"It's for the better, I know you don't like the thought but she must train." I could only assume the voice belonged to Leia.
"I won't allow it. She can't just leave, not when she's perfectly happy. When I'm perfectly happy."
A loud sigh was heard, "I understand but we can't just ignore the threat of Smoke finding our base."
Poe's footsteps were loud as he paced the room, "Leia, I know how the Resistance feels about her. A majority still don't trust her. But she means so much to me, without her here I would be a mess."
"I'll try to talk to Luke but I can't make any promises."
I sensed Poe's internal excitement, "Thank you so much Leia."
His footsteps got louder and I instantly ran back to our room as fast as I could hoping Poe didn't see or hear me. Once inside the room and threw my boots to the closet and sat at the edge of the bed. Within five minutes the door opened and Poe stepped inside.
"Couldn't sleep?"
I shook my head.
He sighed, "Anything I can do?"
My arms wrapped around him and I buried my face in his chest. I just wanted to feel the warmth from his body, to feel safe in his embrace. He hugged me back and soon pulled me away a little.
"Let's get you under the blankets, you're shivering like crazy."
I didn't argue as he lifted me up and put me on my side of the bed, climbing in right after. Poe grabbed my waist and pulled me towards him. I turned to face him and almost instantly our lips were connected. He was determined, like his mind wanted to mess with me. My hands made their way to his hair and began to play with it a bit, never breaking the kiss.
He pulled away and smiled, "I'm so lucky to have you."
"And I am so lucky to have you."
It wasn't long before we rekindled the kiss. Glad to be in each others arms.
"I love you Poe Dameron." I murmured in between small kisses.
He smiled, "I love you too Lark."
With that we fell into a peaceful slumber. Our breaths matched one another. everything was perfect. But the attack alarms blared and we were awoken and forced to prepare for battle...
The First Order finally came for me.
