Cover and Title:
I find that the cover choice is appropriate for the story. The picture is a good choice. I like the font that is used for it too.
The title is definitely catching and invokes a desire to read what this story is about. When searching for it on WattPad, only one other story contained these exact words. That title
included many other words, which makes this title unique. So, I would say that this is a wonderful title choice. It fits with what the story seems to be about, as well.
Summary/Synopsis:
The description tells me what the story is about. This is true. However, I might suggest breaking it up into more than one sentence. It would help the idea flow better, and might make a reader have more interest in the story.
(Current)Paris Dayton, a novice writer finds herself flung into the land that she created, face to face with her own characters, slowly starting to fall for one of them.
Grammar/Sentence Structure:
I have heard before that writing in the present tense rarely works for fiction stories. However, I am pleased to note that it seemed to work well for this story.
In chapter one, there is a sentence that reads, "I reach at the same time as the bus and sit at an empty seat at the back." This sentence left me wondering what she reached at the same time as the bus. I am sure it was the bus stop, however it was missing from the sentence. There are also times throughout the story where other words seem to have been forgotten.
However, the grammar throughout the story is good. The story reads well and it kept me reading.
Vocabulary/Descriptions:
The vocabulary choices make me feel like this is actually the main character writing it, and I liked that about the vocabulary choices in this book. While there were a few words misspelled or misused, the overall vocabulary fit with the age of the narrator.
The scenery and setting of the various places throughout the story so far were well described. I was able to picture the places with ease. The author does well in describing the beach and the houses in the other dimension.
Pace/Character Development:
The story starts with Paris/Elaine writing a story. But, I wasn't told this by the narrator, and honestly, it confused me until we got on the bus with Paris. I would suggest the narrator let us know the main character is writing those words that get broken up by her mom yelling at her.
Once I figured out that was what was going on, however, I really liked the idea of two stories mixing together.
Paris' feelings about life and her outlook on life and people, in general, is well portrayed. It is believable, and good character development, in my opinion. The further I read, the more clear it is to me how negative Paris' outlook on life is. It is portrayed well. It caused me to imagine how
Paris must have had bad experiences with people in her life.
Paris reacted very well to the sudden transportation to another world, I think. It speaks to her seeming ability to remain poised in adverse situations.
Everleigh seemed very accepting of Paris and her sudden appearance. Paris and Everleigh became friends quickly. I would have expected more direct discussion on where Paris is from, however.
The pacing of the story is very quick. The story felt rushed. I am not necessarily saying this is a bad thing, for I like the idea of the story. However, things seemed to happen very quickly. Things seemed to be accepted very soon.
I believe the plot of the story is somewhat unique. Being able to travel, at seeming will, to other worlds would be neat. Those worlds having been created by me would be interesting, for sure.
What I Liked Most:
The idea of written character's having more back story than the author writes. The character's in the world Paris created had more story than even she, the author, knew about. This idea was portrayed nicely.
Concluding thoughts:
I thought this story was unique. It appears it is still being written, and I would be interested to know where the story would ultimately take us. I didn't get an idea about the overall plot of the story from the 5 chapters I had the pleasure of reading. The author has a good idea with this story, and I hope it does well, in the end.
Note: The review book offers several options. To review only grammar and sentence structure. To review only character development and plot. To review only vocabulary and descriptions. Or, the requester can ask for all of this to be reviewed. There are two options when making this request – for it to be sugar-coated or not.
This review is for it all to be touched on, but sugar coated. Keep in mind that all of the previously expressed views are my opinion and should be taken as such.
