Amber Pearl was your typical sweet yet sarcastic girl. She was reserved, never wanting to share her feelings with anyone besides one person. She grew up with a younger brother, which was always fun for her, but it never felt like it was just the two of them.

She, her mother, and her brother would always go to her mother's best friend's beach house for the summer. And without fail, her father would join on the Fourth of July, just as all the other dads did. This meant that she grew up with four other kids, her mother's best friends' kids.

Steven, Belly, Jeremiah, and Conrad were their names. Those four were the best things that had ever happened to Amber and her brother. Belly and Amber were inseparable since the first day they met when they were just little babies, and the same was true of Jeremiah and Amber. Steven was Belly's older brother, which meant that he liked to tease his sister, and since Amber was her best friend, that privilege also fell upon her as well.

Conrad, on the other hand, was something entirely different. Conrad was something so much more for Amber. From the first time she could comprehend feelings, hers swelled for him. She knew he was her soulmate; it was as obvious as the pain you feel when someone punches you in the gut. And that's what it felt like—a punch to the gut. She didn't know it, but Conrad felt the same. Though neither one of them ever acted on it, well, until...

Each summer they spent at Cousins, their feelings grew stronger and stronger. He was the one she wanted to be around all the time, and vice versa. They would surf, dance, sing, sit on the beach and watch the waves or the stars; they would do anything and everything that would make the other happy.

And then finally, one summer (the summer Amber turned fourteen years old), everything changed. It started with little hand touches, little moments where they would stare into each other's eyes, not saying a word but saying a million with their eyes at the same time, and then it progressed to spending more and more time together, just them, until their feelings became too much for them and they burst out like a bad pipe.

And after that, they became even more inseparable, but now they were in love. Or so everyone thought. That summer, to say the least, ended very badly, resulting in Amber and Conrad's short-lived relationship coming to a tragic end.

Now, it was two years later, and Amber was finally returning to Cousins. She hadn't talked to Conrad or Jeremiah over her time away, and she only spoke to Belly and Steven when she saw them at school, so things were destined to be a little awkward.

This summer, Amber was hoping it was going to be the same as it had always been, but when her mother told her that she wouldn't be going back with her children, Amber was crushed. She soon realized that nothing was going to be the same, not even her, and she was an idiot for believing otherwise.

But she could've never imagined just how different it was going to be. She could've never imagined all of the feelings that were going to resurface like lost treasure, and she couldn't have predicted the absolute and utter heartbreak, anger, confusion, fun, and sadness she was going to experience over the course of the next couple of months.

She didn't expect herself to fall so hard (again) for her ex-boyfriend, aka the boy she now hates, aka Conrad Fisher.

And she didn't expect him to fall for her either.
