Strum.

"First I open my eye-e-e-es..."

Strum.

The wind softly blew past me. I smiled.

"Then I felt such a stra-ange breeze..."

Strum.

I looked around at the city. It was full of people who were carrying on with their lives that I knew nothing about. I was just a stranger on the street to them.

"I had traveled to a world made of blocks..."

Strum.

"Totally unbeknownst to me..."

I opened my mouth, but I couldn't think of any more words. I wrote down what I sang already in my notebook, and continued strumming the guitar with a nonsense beat.

A guy walking by me tossed an emerald in my bucket. I grinned at him, but he had already turned his head away.

Life in the big city was rough, but I was on my way to becoming a real musician.

It's not like I could ever go back to who I was before. I used to be one of Jeb's best bounty hunters, with many allies that I could call friends. I hunted, captured, killed, tortured. All for money and recognition from Jeb. But I left that life to pursue my true calling— music. I even left all of the emeralds that I had collected. Well, most of them.

That was two weeks earlier. Since then I had bought a guitar and rented a cheap apartment. It wasn't ideal, but no one said becoming a famous musician was easy.

For the fifth time that day, I collected my stuff and moved my position down a few city blocks. Not because I assumed a new area could get me more money.

But because I was being watched.

There were alleyways everywhere in the city; easy places for people to hide. I was noticing figures in the alley entrances. At first I assumed they were just glowstone dealers, but after the fourth time, it was obviously the same people.

The fifth place I chose was a bench in front of the city park. Many escape routes. Very open. Plenty of witnesses, so if they were amateur muggers, they wouldn't come for me.

However, I had a feeling they weren't amateur muggers.

My suspicion was confirmed when an old friend sat down next to me peacefully.

"Jason." I fiddled with my guitar's tuning, not even needing to look up to know it was him.

"Sky." I could barely hear him say my name. "You're looking well. Still the same sunglasses, I see."

I finally glanced at him. He wasn't wearing his helmet. He must've assumed I was no threat anymore. "Is that a new blue suit? Looks shinier than before."

"It's amazing what two million emeralds can buy a whole troop."

A corner of my mouth twitched upward. "I'm assuming you're not here to listen to my godly music."

"Adam," Jason said. His calm manner was gone; he seemed more urgent. "Jeb made you our next target immediately after you left."

I raised an eyebrow. "Two weeks ago? And you've just now found me? You guys really don't do well without me."

"You don't understand. He doesn't want us to take you alive."

I knew it was coming, but the sentence still made my heart drop to my stomach. The man that I had looked up to for years, the closest father figure I had, wanted me dead. "I see. And I assume you're still going to listen to what he says?"

Jason was quick to answer. "We can bring you back to him alive. Convince him to let you back in. We can all be friends again."

"I don't want to come back in." I snapped. "I'm done with the killing and the capturing. Do you remember when I murdered an innocent man? He had a family."

"He was part of the job."

"Just because you say that doesn't make it right. I want to have a nice life. No more blood on my hands. Is that too much to ask?"

Jason was quiet for too long. "So that's it, huh?"

I hesitated. "I guess so."

"Then I'm sorry, Adam, but—"

Before he could finish his sentence, I swung my guitar at him. Just as it hit his uncovered face, I lunged over the back of the bench, tucked my landing into a roll, and sprinted into the park.

Rule number twenty-three of being a bounty hunter is you never look back when you're being chased, especially when you have cover. But I looked back, and saw Jason getting out of his daze, and four other people running out of the city and towards me.

Deadlox, Captainsparklez, JeromeASF, and BajanCanadian. Or Ty, Jordan, Jerome, and Mitch.

I shouldn't have looked back. My friends became my hunters. That really put a damper on our relationship.

I turned my head to see where I was going, and just barely dodged a tree. I wove in and out of trees, jumping over bushes and ducking under branches. I hadn't run like that in weeks, so my breath was already starting to become heavy and uneven. But I kept pushing myself.

An arrow whizzed by my face and hit the trunk of a tree I was about to run past.

Great. Jason had his bow.

I broke the tree arrow in half as I went by it. The small stick provided me at least some sort of weapon. Rule twelve of being a bounty hunter is you can make a weapon out of anything.

I made it into a clearing, where there was a large pond. Two bridges went over thinner strips of the pond. People were spread out around the water, peacefully having picnics, fishing, and playing games.

I sprinted through, dodging and weaving through families having a lovely time. As I ran over a bridge, I bumped into a guy who unfortunately lost his balance and fell into the water.

When I made it out of the clearing and back into the trees, I was exhausted. I slowed my breathing and tried not to think about my old friends trying to kill me.

The trees stopped, and I was nearing the city's edge. I was running on a big cobblestone street with shabby-looking houses on either side of me. About two hundred blocks in front of me was the railroad— the division between the city and the forest.

As if on cue, a loud whistle blew, and the train appeared, rolling on by.

My only chance.

With newfound motivation, I darted toward the train. Another arrow flew past me.

One hundred blocks.

A figure appeared from in between the houses and stepped in between me and the train. Setosorcerer was in his purple and gray suit, donning a new violet cape.

"You guys... really treat yourselves." I said loud enough for him to hear.

He pulled out a regular diamond sword in response. I charged at him.

When I was close enough, he swung his sword at my head. I ducked under, but his leg caught me, and I went down. Before he could do anything, I kicked up at his stomach. He doubled over, and I used my other foot to swipe under him and knock him down. I stabbed the broken arrow down into his cape, lodging the stick in between the stones underneath. It would hold him for a quick second.

Another whistle. The train was still there.

I got up and sprinted the last fifty feet. When I was fifteen blocks away, the end of the last cart appeared— a small viewing place with a railing. I followed the train to the left, and lunged for the railing. I felt the iron under my hand, and grabbed on for dear life. I hauled myself over and onto the train, my chest heaving.

Just as I got up and turned around, an arrow lodged itself into the wall behind me, just barely missing me. I ducked under the railing for protection, but still looked through the iron bars.

All of my old group were there now. Jason, Seto, Ty, Jordan, Mitch, Jerome, Pat, Jen, Dan, Stampy, and Squid. They were just standing there, looking at me with solemn expressions on their faces. Jason had his bow raised with an arrow no longer in it.

I stared back at my hunters with confusion. I had realized they wanted me to escape. Seto could have used his magic, but he used a regular sword. The other members of the group were most likely waiting to ambush me, but they didn't. And if Jason wanted to hit me, he would've.

As I turned away from them, I reminded myself that this was only the beginning of the hunt. There was still more to come, and eventually they would have to do what Jeb says.

They were my family... we had been through so much together...

But now they were the hunters, and I was the hunted.

And I couldn't look back.
