Chapter 28: Discovery
I made my way back to the Syndicate management building. My mind was a mix between a screaming banshee and an ice cube. I would run a few steps only to slow to a stop and stand still for a moment, eyes glossing over as my mind wanders back.
I must have walked myself back to the Syndicate management building eventually, and made my way down to the labs because I walked right into Isabelle. She stood in front of me with her arms crossed, an amused look on her face. "You okay there, Amelia?" She asked, her eyebrows raised.
I opened my mouth to answer but closed it as I tugged on the ends of my hair in embarrassment. Isabelle leaned in and whispered, "does it have something to do with Christopher?"
I felt my cheeks immediately flame up and I bowed my head down so that my hair would fall in front of my face to hide it. I heard Isabelle chuckle before she moved behind me to push me towards my room.
She sat me down on my bed and sat beside me. "Tell me, what happened."
I stayed silent, but my fingers automatically found its way to my lips. This seemed to have revealed everything to Isabelle as she gasped dramatically. "No way."
I snuck a look at her through the strands of my hair. She looked strangely proud. "Huh, who knew he had it in him." My face scrunched up in confusion and I leaned backwards and parted my hair, sliding it back over my shoulders.
"Well," She gave me a nudge, "how do you feel about him?"
I looked down at my fingers. "I... I don't know." I whispered. I curled up into a ball, wrapping my arms around my legs. "I've never felt like this before."
Isabelle gave me a small smile as she smoothed a hand over my hair. "I'm sure you'll figure it out soon."
I looked at her before looking away. "It wouldn't have happened if I hadn't gone out of control earlier."
I could feel Isabelle tense up beside me. I turned to look at her. "Did you hear about that?"
"I know that the remaining criminals were found in one of the smaller alleys bloodied and beat up... I just hoped it wasn't you who did it." Isabelle had whispered the last part in a quiet voice but I managed to pick up on it.
"Isabelle." I prompted her to look at me. "What's happening to me."
Silence reigned in the air around us.
"My dizzy spells, my headaches, and the recent incidences when I went out of control. What's going on?"
Still no reply from Isabelle. She heaved a huge breath before she stood up and shot me a distracted smile. "I don't think I've added your fingerprints on every access door yet. I should go do that. Get some sleep."
"Wait, wha – Isabelle!" She closed the door behind her as she left the room. Confused, I laid down on my bed.
I let out a sigh before I slipped under my blankets and drifted off to sleep.
And of course, the first person I meet the next day was Christopher. I stood in front of him twitching slightly in awkwardness. He stood in his spot, running through his hand through his hair in equal awkwardness.
"So, um..." Christopher attempted to start a conversation.
I began to rock back on forth on my feet. "Thanks for helping me last night." I muttered quietly, sneaking glances at him before looking away.
Christopher seemed to be startled by this, "you're welcome. And, um, sorry about... the other thing."
I could already feel the fire building in my cheeks and hunched over. "It's okay." I mumbled in a barely audible voice.
I don't know if he heard me or not but I heard one of the scientists call me over to the virtual training room and I began to make my way there, walking past Christopher. As I passed him, it was as if all thinking in my mind turned off, I turned my foot sharply to turn to Christopher and pressed my lips on his cheek before pulling away and continuing to walk.
I didn't realize I had done this until I was nearly at the virtual training room. I could feel my face heat up even more as I sat down in the seat. I hit myself on the head several times with my palm to clear my head before I started my virtual training.
Like many times before, the virtual training was over before I knew it. Isabelle was by my side when I had returned to reality.
She smiled, "Doing okay?"
I nodded slowly, shooting her a strange look. Isabelle returned the look, flickering her eyes towards one of the doors occasionally.
I furrowed my eyebrows. Was she trying to tell me something?
As if sensing my confusion, Isabelle walked towards one of the doors, placed her hand on it and pushed it open. Before walking in, she looked backwards and tilted her head towards the direction she was walking in, as if beckoning me to walk through the door as well.
I stood up slowly and made my way there as well. I looked around me to make sure there was no one else in the room or aware of this. The fact that Isabelle was being quiet about it must mean that no one else must know. I pushed the door open, feeling a slight vibration beneath my palm as the biometric lock on the door recognized my hand print.
It was a dimly lit hallway on the other side of the door, and Isabelle was already nowhere to be scene. I stepped in and the door closed behind me. I stood in the middle of the hallway and looked around.
There were two other doors in that hallway. One of them was slightly open. I walked towards that door and entered the room with caution. The lights weren't turned on inside but my eyes had adjusted enough to the lack of lighting, and there was some light bleeding into the room from the hallway as well.
It seemed like a work room. There were several desks and cupboards. The desks were scattered with loose papers. I frowned, it was pretty rare to see people using this much paper now. I leaned forwards to get a better look at the papers on the desks.
On one of the papers, I recognized my name and pulled it out of the mess to take a closer look. But before I could, I heard the click of a door opening come from outside and I ducked down and hid in a small space beneath the table.
Thank God I was wearing all black with a black hoodie. I pulled the hood over my head to hide my hair and quickly read through the paper. What I read made my blood turn cold as goosebumps spread across my body.
My heart began to beat erratically, only beating faster when I hear the footsteps nearing the door to this room. I made my way closer to the door and hid beneath another desk that was the closest to the door.
The door opened as a female walked in, humming a quiet tune as her heels clicked on the floor. I didn't care to see who it was as I slipped out as soon as I made sure she wasn't looking in my direction and wasn't aware of what was happening behind her as the door began to close.
The moment I left the room, I realized I was still holding the piece of paper. I folded it with shaky hands and reentered the room I did my virtual training in.
My eyes were wide open, and I was shaking. I began to sprint back towards my room, half dazed. I crashed into Christopher along the way and shakily pulled him along with me, any words he said to me completely went over my head.
"Amelia, what's wrong?" His words finally entered my brain when we finally got to my room. He stood near the center of the room as I paced back and forth.
"How did I not see this? I was so stupid. Oh my God." I muttered to myself as I paced with shaking legs.
"What?" Christopher shot me a confused look.
I stopped my pacing for a moment to face him, unconsciously tapping my toes on the floor. "Isabelle indicated for me to follow her but she was gone when I did and there was this one door that was left open and I went in to see what it was but then I found a bunch of papers scattered and –"
"Remember to breathe," Christopher placed his hands on my shoulders in an attempt to calm me down.
I took a large breath and continued talking, "I saw my name on one of the papers so I decided to look at it and..."
I took another deep breath, "My training sessions. They're experiments. And I'm the test subject."
I took the paper out from my hoodie's pocket and shoved it into his hands as I resumed my pacing. "That was the only paper I saw. I only know these have been experiments but I still don't know what for. I'm going back later to find more information. There's no way I'm going to my session tonight."
Christopher nodded in agreement. "Did you say that Isabelle lead you to that room?"
I nodded and slowed down my pacing, "she did. But if she was a part of these experiments that have been top secret, why would she tell me. She definitely wanted me to find out. Otherwise, she wouldn't have shown me the room... or added my handprints to the extra security systems."
"What do you plan on doing tonight?" Christopher asked, handing back the piece of paper.
I shook my head, "I'm not sure yet. I know I absolutely can't go to the sessions anymore... they MUST be the cause of my headaches and dizziness too!" I let out a frustrated groan and slapped my palm against my forehead.
I take in another deep breath. "I'm going to wait a bit before I go back and find out more information about the experiments they were doing to me. I'll decide what to do then, before it's time for the session."
I turned to Christopher, "pretend you know nothing. Just go about your normal day. I'll find you later if I find more information."
I sighed, rubbing my forehead slightly. Christopher wrapped his arms around me and held me close to him. "You'll be okay. Don't worry."
I nodded.
"I got to go but I'll see you later." He said before he let me go and left the room.
I watched the door closed behind him before I began to dig through my closet to look for a flashlight. I couldn't find a flashlight but I decided to use my tablet instead. I could also use it to take pictures. I checked the time. It was almost noon, and most people would be having their lunch soon. The room and the surrounding areas should be empty.
I placed the tablet in my pocket, along with the paper that I had grabbed earlier, and left my room again. I made my way back to the virtual training room calmly. Hands in my pockets, and acting like I was just taking a small stroll.
I entered the room and looked around to make sure no one was looking in and made my way to the private hallway and the room I was in before.
Before I entered the room, I pressed my ear against the door to see if I can hear anyone inside. Taking extra caution, I pushed the door open the slightest bit to see if there's any reaction from inside the room. Nothing.
I pushed it open a little more and peeked inside. There was no one in there.
I looked back to make sure there was no one behind me and slipped into the room. I placed the paper I had grabbed earlier under a pile of papers and switched on the tablet and began to look through the other papers on the table. Every time I found some new information regarding me or the experiment in general, I took a picture.
I stayed in that room, flipping through the papers for almost 6 hours. I skimmed through most of the pieces of papers that were displayed on the desks, many of which I had taken photos of with my tablet. Adrenaline was pumping through my system and with every piece of new information I found, I had to pause for a bit to let the information register in my mind.
By the time I thought I was done with the majority, I was at the far end of the room. I turned around to make my way back to the front and heard the shuffle of paper. I looked down and saw I stepped on some pieces of paper as well. I crouched down and shone the light onto the papers.
After what I had read sank into my head, I nearly dropped my tablet. I snapped a picture of it and stood up, more determined to leave and run out of the building. Before I could take another step, I heard the echoes of footsteps outside in the hallway.
Panicking, I looked around the room. There was a large air vent right above me on the wall. I climbed onto the desk in one of the space that wasn't covered in paper and yanked off the cover and pulled myself into the vents. It was large enough that I could crouch in there.
The moment I pulled the cover back into space, I heard the door to the room open. I breathed a quiet sigh of relief and began to crawl through the vents.
I followed the path and looked through each exit I saw to see which rooms they lead to. Somehow, I found my way to a vent that lead to outside the building. Peeking through the gaps in the cover to make sure there was no one there, I pushed the cover off and jumped out onto the ground before replacing the cover.
I was at the back of the Syndicate building. The sun had already set but there were still remnants of fire in the sky. Taking out my tablet, I sent a message to Christopher, telling him to get outside of the building.
I made my way to the front and stood amongst the trees on the street across from the front entrance of the building. Christopher soon walked out and looked around in front of him to look for me.
I waited until he was looking in my direction before motioning with his hand to make his way to me. Once I was sure that he saw me and was walking towards me, I turned around and began to jog away as well.
Once he had caught up, I broke into a faster run while making sure that he could still keep up with me.
"Where are we going?" Christopher asked.
"Syndicate 45's home. I found something that they need to know about too."
