Chapter 25: Guardian Angel

The next day, I walked over to the labs to do my virtual training for the day while still thinking about the plan I had concocted the day before. I went through the usual procedure in silence and pushed the thoughts out of my head as I prepared to dive into the virtual world.

From the start of the training, I realized that something was different. As I entered the virtual simulation, I felt a static charge run through my entire body. I could feel my head begin to throb and my heart beating against my ribcage.

All my sensations became extremely amplified and I felt my body jerking in a spontaneous manner. Once I had calmed down, I could hear my own heavy breathing.

Am I in the virtual world right now? My thoughts rang loud and clear in my mind.

I opened my eyes and was shocked at what I saw. I was in the room that I was usually in for my physical fights except my vision was different. The lights were brighter and there were neon blue lines spreading across the room outlining the dimensions of the room. It was as if my eyes were breaking down the room into smaller components for calculations sake.

I tried moving around. I felt a lot lighter. I heard footsteps with my advanced hearing and looked towards the other side of the room. I watched the door slide open as the same muscular person that I had yet to defeat, walked in.

The moment he walked in, neon blue circles appeared in my vision and focused on certain parts of his body. I just barely stopped my jaw from dropping. I blinked my eyes but it didn't do anything to my vision.

Before long, I heard the signaling beep for the start of the fight and I began to rush towards my opponent without even realizing what I was doing. I aimed my fist for his arm, which he caught, but immediately used the force to swing my leg towards his side and delivered a strong kick there.

To my surprise, my kick managed to deal pain to him and threw him off balance. I then realized that I had kicked in one of the spots that the neon circles had zeroed in at. Something in the reasonable side of my mind clicked as I rushed towards him again and delivered another kick to his back, knocking him forwards.

Without thinking, I grabbed onto his shirt and jerked him backwards so that he was now falling backwards. One hand reached behind me and grabbed onto a sheathed dagger and the other found its way to his neck. I pinned him down by the neck and aimed the edge of the dagger at his forehead, stopping myself just as the tip touched him.

Not a second later, the ending bell sounded. Soon the paramedics came in and took my opponent away, leaving me in the room.

The static feeling returned and my head began to feel extremely constricted within my skull. I gritted my teeth in pain, refusing the urge to scream. As the feeling began to fade away, I jerked my eyes open and looked around me. I was back in the room I always go to for my virtual trainings. The various wires were still connected to me. I released a heavy breath and relaxed into my seat as Isabelle came in to remove the equipment from me.

"How are you feeling?" She asked softly, placing a tray with a cup on it on a table beside me. She began to detach me from the chair. I sat up straight and grabbed the cup and downed it in seconds.

"Okay, I suppose." I replied, beginning to feel better from the virtual training. I thought I was getting used to it, but I guess they had to change it up sometimes. I stood up on shaking legs and stretched. I took a few deep breaths to calm my heart down.

"Well, you're free for the rest of the day. Just make sure you're back down here for the physical training tonight." Isabelle picked up the tray, placed my cup in it, gave me a soft smile and walked away.

I left for my room immediately. In my room, I pulled on a hoodie and grabbed all the things I needed for my plan before leaving the building. I climbed onto the next nearest building's roof and looked around for the hoverboard I had hidden here the night before.

"Activate. Release camouflage mode."

Syndicate 45 has a day off today, so that means the three of them would be wandering around the city together. I jumped onto the hoverboard and began to head towards Syndicate 11, looking for the man that Kyle and I had bumped into.

I flew over the alleyways in Syndicate 11 until I found the man, wandering around the small alleys with a beer bottle in one hand. I steadied myself on the hoverboard and took out a small handgun.

Instead of a bullet, I had loaded it with a tracking chip. I took aim and shot, my tracking device beeping as the chip reached its target. As soon as I heard the beep I flew away and back towards Sector 3 to look for Kyle, Vanessa and Hugh.

I saw the three of them walking along the road. I recognized the direction they were walking in as the direction to the arcade in the Sector. Taking my chances that the arcade was where they will be going to, I flew over to the arcade and the hoverboard down on the building opposite to it.

I pulled out my tracking device to pinpoint the general location of the man and then checked to see what route I needed to take to lure Kyle to the man. I noticed that the three of them were walking closer, and I pocketed the device. I set the hoverboard to camouflage mode before I made my way down the building and hid in the alleyway right beside it.

As the three of them walked pass the alleyway, I kicked over a trashcan to attract their attention. They all turned to look at the alleyway that I was in. I kept my hood down so it was still eye-catching even if I was standing in a darker part of the alleyway. I caught Kyle's eyes, turned slowly and walked off into the alleyway. I continued to walk until I had to make another turn and stood there, facing the direction I had come from.

As I had hoped, the three of them came running after me and were soon catching up. Hiding a smile, I ran off again and stopped at the next turn. I did this until I knew we were close to the man. I checked the device quickly and identified which route to take. At the last turn, I stood there, waiting for them to see me. As they did, I ran towards the alleyway that the man would stumble into in a few seconds.

The moment I was out of sight of the other three, I climbed up the building right beside me and hit myself on the roof.

Kyle and the others arrived to the destination first.

"Amelia?" Vanessa yelled.

"Amelia, where did you go?" Hugh joined in on the yelling.

"Guys." Kyle warned silently. The other two quietened down. Kyle was already on high alert. He knew that something was wrong. I smiled slightly.

The man walked into the alleyway not a few seconds later. He turned to face the three of them and downed the rest of his beer before throwing the bottle to one side.

I could begin to feel the anger radiate from Kyle. Vanessa and Hugh both took a stance in front of Kyle as if protecting him. This seemed to have snapped him out of his rage, even if it was in the slightest bit.

I took my gun back out, this time it was loaded with tranquilizer bullets. I kept it ready in my hand, just in case they needed some help.

As I had expected, Kyle made the first attack. But he was deflected easily by the man, as if he was just an annoying fly. Hugh made the next move, moving quickly to find a weak spot. As his kick attempt was stopped by the man, Kyle delivered a punch to the man's face. This managed to knock him backwards only slightly but otherwise had no impact.

I heard the crack of a whip and saw the Vanessa had taken out one of her smaller whips that she carries around with her. She wrapped the tail of the whip around the man's arm in an attempt to pull him off balance, but he grabbed onto it and yanked on it, throwing her against the wall instead.

Kyle and Hugh continued to try to find the man's weak spots with punches and kicks and Vanessa continued her attacks but with a lot more caution.

I watched in silence, the worry within me increasing every time I saw one of them get injured. Soon, the three of them were much more injured than the man and I couldn't stop myself from getting involved in the fight. I pressed a button on the tracking device before releasing the safety on my gun.

From my spot, I took aim at the ankle of the man and shot a tranquilizer bullet. It took effect as soon as the bullet wedged itself in and the man collapsed onto one knee.

Taking this opportunity, Vanessa managed to wrap the tail of her whip around the body of the man and yanked it tight to keep him in place. He yelled in frustration as he jerked around trying to break free. Kyle and Hugh stepped up their attacks and began their assault one after the other until the man coughed up blood and collapsed in the alleyway floor.

A couple police cars and sleek black cars belonging to the Syndicate management team showed up soon after. I had alerted them that something was happening when I pressed the button on the tracking device.

Happy with the outcome, I glanced back down at the three of them who were currently being talked to by Mrs. Miller and a few paramedics, I pulled the hood over my head and sprinted away from the scene.

I went to retrieve my hoverboard first, before I began to head back to the Syndicate Management building. As I arrived at the building, I noticed that the three of them were walking into the building with Mrs. Miller, as they were driven back from Sector 11. I followed them in from a distance and waited until they were all in Mrs. Miller's office before I hurried to the back and made my way down to the labs and my room.

As I entered my room, I threw my hoodie onto the bed before falling down onto my blankets as well. I glanced sideways to look at the time and saw that I had a few hours left before my physical training. Crawling under the blankets, I decided to take a nap.

The sun had already set when I woke up again. I sat up quickly and checked the time. I still had some time before my training. I stood up and stretched, hearing the satisfying cracks as I did so. Letting out a sigh, I walked towards the kitchen area and grabbed a small brownie to snack on before making my way to the labs.

The scientists greeted me as I walked, already used to me wandering about the area. It had taken them some time to get used to someone walking around the labs every day since it was hidden from the rest of the world.

Christopher was in the usual lab when I entered. He turned to face me as I walked in and shot me a large smile before walking over.

"Hey! Great job on that fight earlier today! You finally managed to beat him!" He said, the wide grin unwavering on his face.

I frowned, "What fight?"

Christopher raised his eyebrows at me, "You know, the fight with that guy you haven't managed to defeat until today? The fight from this morning?"

My frown deepened.

"I was doing my virtual training this morning."
