Hunter(Carl)

I jolt awake. This isn't my hammock. The memory of the girl rushes back to me. She saved me from the mutant, checked for any breaks, but that's all I can recall. I sit up. Big mistake. My shoulders and ribs hurt sore up. I groan from the enormous effort. I look around to see if the girl is around. But all I can see is another smaller, younger girl sleeping two beds down from one I slept in. I watch the blanket rise and fall as she breathes.

I do this for a few minutes until another girl walks in. She disregards me and walks over to where the smaller girl is. I watch as she pulls the blanket over shoulders and wakes her up. But she fails. Once she realizes her failure she looks up at me.

She puts a hand on her chest. "Oh my god," she says, surprised.

"Hi."

She lifts one eyebrow, "Were you watching this whole time?"

"Pretty much," I answer.

She rolls her eyes and sighs, "Great. I'll let Korra know that you're awake." She continues on, "I'm Margo." With that, she leaves the room to go find Korra.

Korra. More memories about last night cloud my thoughts. I remember the girl saying that was her name yesterday. I remember her explaining that my ankle was okay when I was sleeping. But that's all I can recall for now.

"Hey, Carl."

I snap out of my daze and look up to find the Korra at the foot of the bed. "What did you call me?" I ask.

"Carl. I gave you that name last night. Only because you failed to tell me your name," she explains.

I raise my eyebrows. I remember when she named me that. "Carl. I remember that."

"Great. So I wasn't talking to myself. I tend to do that sometimes. Okay I tend to do that a lot. I also think out loud a lot. It comes out like word vomit," she pauses to make a vomiting gesture. "I normally can't control it. It happens at the wor-"

I cut her off by raising my head. "Duly noted. Also, you're doing it again."

Her cheeks glow a bright red, "Sorry."

"It happens."

She rubs the back of her neck. "So... Carl. Are you going to tell me your actual name? Or is it really Carl? That would be really cool if it was. I mean, you kind of look like a Carl."

"I don't look like a Carl. I look like a Hunter."

The corners of her mouth tilt up slightly, "Are you saying that your name is Hunter?"

I nod.

She walks next to the bed, "You will forever look like a Carl to me."

I shrug, "Whatever you think then."

"Can you stand?"

I swing my legs over to the side of the bed. My legs burn like I've been running for hours. I grunt in effort. "A little help?" I ask. Korra extends a hand. I grab on to her as I slide off the bed.

"Thanks."

She nods and lets go, "Anytime."

A small voice calls out, "Korra?"

Korra walks to where the other little girl is. "I guess it's time that I introduce you to everybody." The little girl climbs out of her bed with a small bear inside of her hand. Her height up to Korra's waist. She has auburn hair, with deep blue eyes. Like the ocean. Or the sky. "Who's that?" she points up at me.

"His name is Carl."

I shoot her an irritated glare, "Seriously?"

"His name is Hunter." The girl seems confused at first by my name, but quickly shrugs it off. I smile for her benefit.

The girl hides her bear behind her back, "Like the ones that shoot animals?"

Korra shakes her head, "No Annie. He's nice, see?" Korra stops to gesture me. I do the same with a small wave. Then she continues on, "Are you going to introduce yourself?"

Korra gently pushes Annie forward. Annie's cheeks flush a deep scarlet as she looks down. "Umm... I'm Annie." She holds out her bear. "And this is Mr. Bear."

I smile at her innocence. "Hi Annie." She shakes Mr. Bear as if to remind me to acknowledge her bear. I bend down to the bear's level. "I would never forget about you Mr. Bear! My name is Hunter. Now, don't worry. I won't shoot you. I promise."

Annie pulls her bear back and glares at me. "Do you pinkie swear?" For her own amusement, I walk over to her and hold out my pinkie. Annie holds out her pinkie on Mr. Bear's behalf. I lock my pinkie with her own. "I pinkie swear."

"That's right," Annie looks me up and down. I smile. After a few seconds, she finally trusts me. She hugs my waist. I put my arms around her as she stiffens.

Korra bends down to Annie's level. "Go find Margo, Annie. Hunter will play with you and Mr. Bear later, okay?"

Annie nods, and goes to leave the room. I watch her go.

"How old is she?"

Korra sighs, "She's too young. She's seven. You could tell."

She's really young. Too young to be living in this part of the Chain. "Where did you find her?"

"We found her on the streets. This was when her bear had the other eye. She was five. My brother and I were sixteen."

As if on cue, someone new walks in. A boy, he looks so much like Korra. Twins. At least they're not identical. He's wearing a Unit patrol uniform. I've seen him before. On the streets. I've seen him the night I first met Korra. He was holding the mutants back, killing them off. She walks over to him. "Hunter, this is my brother. Kade, Hunter. Hunter, Kade."

Kade holds out a hand, "Hunter." I extend my own hand and clap it together with his. His hands are hard, rough. "Korra, I have patrol duty."

"Okay." Korra leans in to hug Kade, "please be careful."

Kade returns the hug. "Don't do anything stupid."

Korra pulls back first and gives her brother a devilish grin, "When would I ever?" Was that meant to be answered?

"You know what I mean. As for you," Kade turns his attention to me. "Keep my sister safe."

"Yes sir."
