Hunter
Yo!
This chapter is dedicated to TheWorldWasQuiet
for the awesome cover he made me!
Thank you!
"Kade."
That was the only word Korra said before running deeper into the square. "Korra! Where are you-" I say. But she's too far away to hear me. I look up at the Graphs again. The same message shows across the screen. "Damn it, Korra!" I sprint into the square.
People crowd around me. Mostly teenagers my age. I can't be here. But I can't leave her. "Korra!" I scream. It doesn't do any good because my voice mixes in with everybody else's.
I see a glimpse of a girl running frantically around the square. From far away, she looks a lot like Korra. I sprint in her direction. I finally reach her and pull her shoulder. She whirls around, "Help me look for him!" I've never felt so relieved.
"Korra."
"Don't stand there. Help me!" She looks like she's on the verge of crying.
I grab her hand and run out of the square. She tries resisting me, but I'm too strong for her. "He's probably deeper into the square."
"Why the hell are you taking me farther away from my brother, you idiot?" She screams, just loud enough for me to hear her over the crowds.
"We need to get a good look," I say as I stop at a rundown apartment building. "Come on!"
She's not resisting anymore. Not pulling back. She's quicker than me to scale the building. We get about two stories high. Just high enough so we can see the mess of people crowding the Graphs. I look on in search for Kade. Korra beats me to it. "There," she says pointing across the square. I squint to get a better look. I can't see him.
"Let's go!" Korra jumps off the building and whizzes past everybody, nearly running into them. I follow a few seconds later just as soon as I see where she's running. Kade is perched on top of an old phone booth. As I get closer, I call out Korra's name a few times. But it doesn't do any good. No matter what I say, or how loud I scream, she still sprints to her twin brother. I finally catch up to her. She turns her head but keeps running. I look up where Kade sits. He's watching everybody scramble. His face jerks in our direction as he stands up.
He jumps down from the phone booth and runs to us. "What the hell are you two doing?"
Korra embraces him in a hug, but Kade pulls her off immediately. "Kade, I heard something going on, so I asked Hunter if I could-"
"No, Korra!" Kade snaps. "You need to leave now."
I chime in, "What's going on?"
Kade jerks his head violently in my direction, "Can't you read, you stupid idiot?" Wow. I am actually offended. "You were supposed to keep Korra safe from danger!"
"Hey! I'm sorry that I can't be her bodyguard, but I'm pretty sure that I tried my best."
Before Kade or Korra could reply, a helicopter rushes in and lands. "You guys need to leave now," Kade says.
Korra shakes her head, "No! I'm not leaving you."
"You're going to have to if you want to stay in this part of the Chain. This place is soon going to be filled with Government soldiers."
I pull on Korra's sweatshirt sleeve, "Korra. This is no joke. We need to go."
Kade at me with astonishment and surprise, "That is probably the first good idea you've had since I met you." Korra looks at me and Kade with a look of betrayal. But Kade continues speaking, "Korra. This is for your own good."
"Okay. I'll go."
We turn to leave but Kade stops me, "Hunter. I need you to watch my sister. She's the only thing that's important to me."
"I promise that nothing will happen to her."
"I don't need your protection," Korra says. We've found a small tunnel just under the train tracks. It's been about thirty minutes since we escaped the square. I can only imagine how many Government soldiers must be congested into the Square.
"Look, I promised your brother that I would do this. I don't intend in breaking this promise. He has a gun, you know."
"Fine," she says. A comfortable silence fills the air. That is, until she breaks it. "How's your leg?"
"My leg?" I've completely forgot about my gash.
She raises one eyebrow, "The thing that ruined my socks."
"Oh yeah! That leg!"
Korra rolls her eyes. "By the way, you owe me socks."
"Yeah... Sorry about that," I say while pulling my pant leg up. I examine my wound. "Interesting."
"What?"
I lean in to get a closer look at my ankle. "It looks like it healed." I look at her and flash her a warm but crooked smile, "You have magic socks."
She returns my smile with a beautiful one, "Well my socks were pretty amazing." It makes my smile grow wider. Korra gives me a sideways look, "What are you smiling about?"
"Hmm?" I shrug. "Nothing... and everything at the same time. Does that make sense?"
Korra looks confused at first but then shrugs it off, "Not really. But I'll take your word for it."
I look around. This is the first time I've seen... noticed this tunnel. "I think I've been here before."
"Really? When?"
"Yup. I have definitely been here." I look at Korra, she stares at me not saying anything. "I've been here with my brother when we were kids. He used to always want to go on adventures."
She laughs once and says, "This is new. What's his name?"
"His name was Stryker."
"Okay, your family has the best names ever."
"Yeah. I guess." My voice changed. I didn't mean for that to happen. "You would've liked him."
Korra noticed my change in tone. She holds her hand up and covers her mouth. "Hunter, I'm so sorry," she says through her fingers.
"What do you have to be sorry for?"
"I shouldn't have pressed on about your brother."
I shake my head. "Whatever. It's nothing to be sorry about. He's a thing of the past." I glance at her. I notice that her hand is still covering her mouth. "Korra. You have nothing to be sorry about."
Slowly, she lowers her hand. "Hunter I-" she starts. But sirens interrupt her. I jerk my head towards the mouth of the tunnel and turn back. Korra and I exchange looks. "Government soldiers," we both say at the same time.
I bring a finger to my mouth and look at Korra. She nods. I scoot over to the edge of the tunnel until the shadow of the roof can no longer hide us from the light. I peer over and strain my neck to see what's going on. A troop of Government soldiers stands outside waiting for orders from their commander. Every single one of them looks intimidating. The commander shouts an order, "Spread out!" The soldiers obediently follow and spread out orderly in three groups of five. They all go in separate directions. One of the groups start jogging in the direction of the tunnel.
Crap! I stand and sprint over to Korra. "We have to go!" I whisper, frantically. She stands as I start sprinting to the other end of the tunnel. Korra catches up immediately. I stop as soon as we reach the end of the tunnel. Korra runs into me. I shoot her an irritated look. She responds with an apologetic look of her own. My gaze shifts over to the shadows of soldiers coming up behind us. "There!"
Korra's face turns pale. My own face doesn't have much more color than hers. "On your knees!" Korra is the first to follow the order. She holds her hands up and drops onto her knees, I do the same. I glance at Korra. She dares not to look at the soldier directly in the eyes. I watch as one soldier comes out from behind the leading soldier and pull something from his pocket. It sparks as he presses a button.
"Hunter that's a-" She didn't finish. The soldier aimed the taser at her as soon as she spoke. I close my eyes as I hear Korra's body fall to the ground, hard. I open my eyes and see Korra's crumpled body on the dirt. Her hair covers her face, but not her half open eye. I turn my attention back onto the soldier where he has the taser pointed at me. He pushes the button and in a simple millisecond, I can feel the electricity pulsing through my veins.
I'm sorry, Kade. I broke your promise.
