Chapter: Six
I pulled up in front of the diner and flicked my cigarette out the window before exiting the car.
I walked through the doors and looked around for Rebecca, but didn't see her. I tried to follow her last night, but lost her.
"Is Rebecca here?" I asked another waitress standing behind the counter.
"Sorry, she called in sick today, should I tell her you stopped by?"
I sighed. "No, that's ok. Thanks anyway."
The waitress nodded me off as I made it out the doors and back to my car...
I pulled into the garage next to the Corvette my best friend gave me. As I looked at it, memories of last night came flooding back.
"I ran out on her..." I whispered to myself.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed her number. It rang a few times before I got her voicemail.
"You've reached Wendy, leave a message and I'll get back to you." Then the beep.
"Wendy, it's Skylar, I'm so sorry about last night. I wanna talk to you, please call back."
I hung up and put my phone back in my pocket as I made my way inside and into my room, flopping down on my bed as the tears started to fall.
"How could everything go to shit in just one night..?"
-------
I spent the last couple weeks ignoring everyone. I haven't talked to Wendy or Rebecca since the night of the party. I haven't even been to Twist.
I mostly just sat in my room listening to music or smoking my life away.
Sure, I was used to being alone, but even when I hit rock bottom, Wendy was there for me... Now, it was just me.
My phone suddenly rang and I answered quickly.
"Wendy?"
"No, it's Blake?"
My shoulders slumped. "Oh, hey Blake."
"You alright?"
I laid back on my bed. "Not really, my life's turning to shit..."
"Why don't you come down to Twist? Drinks are on me."
"Not today, I kinda just wanna be alone..."
She sighed. "Alright, well I'm closing early today if you change your mind."
"Ok, I'll talk to you later, Blake."
"Sure thing, kiddo."
I smiled to myself slightly before hanging up. At least one person still cared.
I stood up and made my way downstairs.
"You ok?" I heard Beth ask from the living room.
I looked over and saw her, Stephanie and a boy sitting on the couch.
"Yeah, just a bad day..."
"More like a bad week."
I chuckled. "Yeah, maybe you're right."
"I usually am." She replied.
"Who's the new kid?" I asked, even though I really didn't care.
"Oh, Steven, nice to meet you." He answered.
"Skylar, nice to meet you to."
I shook his hand and walked into the kitchen to grab a beer.
I returned to my room after that and threw some music on, taking a seat on the edge of my bed, downing the rest of my beer before laying down...
I awoke to the sound of knocking on my door.
I looked out the window and realized it was night time. 'Jesus, how long was I out?'
"Come in!" I shouted.
My mom opened the door and leaned against the frame. "How're you doing?"
I sat up. "Why does everyone keep asking me that?"
"Because, you've been moping around for the last two weeks."
"I'm not moping, I'm fine." I said before laying back down.
"No, you're not."
"And what makes you think that?"
She gestured to the sea of empty beer bottles and cigarette packs lining my floor.
"What does that prove?"
She rolled her eyes. "C'mon, Skylar, just talk to me."
I shook my head, unable to hold back the sadness anymore. Tears starting spilling down my cheeks as I rubbed my eyes.
My mom walked over and sat next to me, putting a comforting arm around my shoulders. "What's wrong, honey?"
I shook my head. "My life's turning to shit."
"Why's that?" She asked, rubbing my back.
"Everyone I care about is slowly walking out of my life. First dad, now Wendy-"
"What happened with Wendy?" She cut off.
I sighed. "She had a house party the other night and I went up to her room to get my jacket. But, when I walked in, she was crying. So, I asked her what was wrong and she told me she loved me. Then, me being the fuckup I am, I ran out on her..."
She was quiet for a second. "Well, that explains the car."
I gave her a confused glance. "What do you mean?"
"She gave you the car because she loves you."
"No she didn't, she gave me the car because I liked it."
She gave me a look and I thought about it for a second. That car goes for a hundred-twenty grand easy, if it wasn't her style she could've sold it. Not give it to me because I liked it.
I closed my eyes. "Dammit."
"Makes sense, huh?"
"I have to give it back."
"That's a good start. But, what you really need to do is talk to her."
"I tried, she won't answer my calls. I ran out on her mom, when she confessed her love for me."
"And sitting here moping isn't gonna help. She's obviously hurt and right now, you're the only one who can fix that."
I contemplated what she said for a minute before looking up at her. "I hate it when you're right."
"Well, get used to it because I'm always right."
I smiled despite my feelings. "Thanks, mom."
"Anytime, sweetheart."
"Love you, mom."
"Love you to." She said before leaving me alone with my thoughts.
If she wouldn't answer my calls, then I'd have to drive down there and talk to her in person. I decided I'd leave early the next morning...
I woke up early, as planned, and hopped in the shower.
After I was ready for the day, I ran downstairs, grabbed a Red Bull and made my way to the garage.
I hopped in the Corvette and thought of Wendy. The look on her face when I walked out that night was stuck in my head ever since and I was determined to change that...
I pulled into her driveway shortly after and took a deep breath.
"You can do this, she's been your best friend since grade school." I pep talked myself in the mirror before exiting the car and making my way to the door.
I hesitated before I knocked, but decided I needed to go through with this.
She answered the door with a stunned look.
"We need to talk." I said.
"Uh, sure, come in."
I walked in and sat on the couch, patting the seat next to me for her to sit.
She did so before glancing at me. "Skylar-"
I raised my hand. "I just wanna start by saying sorry. I shouldn't have ran out on you, but having to tell you that I couldn't return the feelings you have for me seemed harder than not dealing with it. But, that was wrong and I feel like shit."
"It's ok, Skylar, I shouldn't have said what I said, I-"
"No, no... I appreciate what you said and I understand the bravery it took. I love you, Wendy. But, I love you like a sister. I can never give you what you want and it hurts me to put you through that, but..."
A warm smile spread on her lips. "I know... and it's ok. I forgive you."
I looked at her in disbelief. "You do?"
"Of course, like you said, we're like sisters and I could never be mad at you for not loving me. That's just not right..."
I leaned over and hugged her close. "I'm sorry."
She patted my back. "It's ok."
I broke the embrace and stuck my hand out with her keys in it.
"What's this for?"
"Your car, I realize now why you gave it to me and well, I can't accept it."
"But, I want you to have it."
I sighed. "Wendy, I can't. Please just take it back."
She saw the pained look in my eyes, but accepted the keys anyway.
"You're more than welcome to drive it whenever you like."
I smiled. "Thanks."
She returned it. "Don't mention it."
We sat there in silence, but not awkward silence which was a relief. I had my best friend back and I couldn't be happier.
"Let me take you home." She finally said.
"Thanks, I didn't really think that far ahead."
We laughed as we made our way to her car...
Now that I had her back in my life, it was time to get Rebecca back. No matter what...
