Chapter: Five
I pulled my new Corvette into the garage as Wendy pulled up behind me in my 'Cuda. A wide smile spread across my lips at the realization of what I owned.
I walked out towards my old car as Wendy got out.
"I still can't thank you enough." I said.
"You really don't have to, consider it a gift for being an awesome person." She replied.
"No, seriously, I will find a way to pay you back."
"You're so stubborn." She said with a smile.
"You got that right."
She shook her head and chuckled. "I'll tell you what, how about you help me throw the best housewarming party ever, and I'll consider us even."
I smiled." You're on."
We hopped in my 'Cuda and headed back towards Twist...
"Back so soon?" Blake asked as we walked through the doors.
"Yeah, I agreed to throw Wendy a house warming party, you in?"
She nodded. "Sounds like a good time, count me in."
Wendy smiled before responding, "You think you could pass the word around?"
"Sure thing, what time?"
"Seven, tonight."
Blake nodded and we waved her off as we headed out to make a few more stops...
"Why are we going to the diner..? Wait, you're not thinking of inviting Rebecca are you?" Wendy asked.
"It wouldn't hurt to ask." I replied as I stepped out of the car.
I looked back and saw a disappointed look on her face, but shrugged it off and made my way into the diner.
"Hey, Rebecca." I greeted.
"Oh, hey Skylar, what's up?" She replied.
"I'm throwing a house warming party for Wendy tonight at seven, you in?"
"Uh, yeah, sure, why not? What's the address?"
"Oh, don't worry about it, I'll be back to pick you up when your shift ends."
She smiled. "I'll see you at five then."
I returned it. "Great, you can help us set up."
She nodded and we said our goodbyes as I made my way back to my car, passing that same familiar redhead on the way out.
"Hey again, you going to Wendy's party?" She asked.
"Uh..." Was all I could say.
"I invited her, hope you don't mind." Came Wendy's response from the passenger seat.
"Oh, yeah, that's cool... um... see you there."
She waved goodbye as she made her way into the diner. I pulled my cigarettes from my leather jacket and lit one, getting into the car.
I stared out the windshield, my mind racing.
"Ok, I know that look, what's the problem?"
"Rebecca and Jen are gonna be there."
"And?"
"And, I'm trying to get with Rebecca and after the flirting I did with Jen, I can't tell if she's still interested."
"Oh..."
I let out a heavy sigh."It's ok..."
"You sure? Because I can just un-invite her."
"No, it's fine, really. All is forgiven." I said with a small smile. "You're lucky you're hot." I added with a smirk as I pulled out of the parking lot.
So, maybe I kinda hit on everyone. But, hey, flirting was like second nature to me, it was hard to control it sometimes.
After making a few more stops, I made my way back to the diner to get Rebecca.
She walked out and got in the passenger seat.
"How was work?" I asked.
"Not as fun as partying all night." She replied.
I chuckled. "Can't argue with that."
She returned my laugh and with that we were off, heading towards Wendy's house...
"This place is awesome..." Rebecca said, taking in the mansion.
"I know, now stop gawking, we only have an hour to prepare." Wendy replied.
Before we knew it, everyone started showing up and the party was officially under way.
People were laughing, drinking, and dancing as I made my way to answer the door.
"Blake, took you long enough." I said playfully.
She waved me off before making her way to the makeshift bar in the kitchen.
As I was closing the door, though, I heard a quick knock. I opened it back up and saw that damn redhead standing on the porch.
"Oh, hey, glad you could make it." I lied.
"Yep, wouldn't miss an awesome party for the world." She said with a giggle.
"Well, come on in, alcohol's in the kitchen and dancing's in the living room."
"Thanks." She said before making her way to the kitchen.
I made myself scarce after she walked into the kitchen.
Loud music pumped through Wendy's speakers as I made my way around, mingling.
Then, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around, coming face to face with Rebecca.
"This party's so cool, thanks again for the invite." She said.
"Anytime." I replied with a wink.
She gave me a small smile before I heard our names over the music. I turned to see Wendy waving us over.
We shared a quick smile before walking into the kitchen.
"Blake and I are challenging you guys to beer pong." She said.
I turned to Rebecca, who nodded her approval.
"Game on, losers."
-------
"C'mon, Rebecca, last shot and we got this." I encouraged.
She lined up the shot and sunk it, causing me and the crowd to erupt into cheers.
Blake downed the shot and walked back towards the makeshift bar.
Wendy rolled her eyes. "Do you ever lose at anything?"
"Nope. Never have, never will." I replied confidently.
She folded her arms over her chest. "Cocky much?"
I patted her shoulder. "I prefer girls, but hey, whatever floats your boat."
"Whatever. Nice job, Rebecca." She said before walking off.
"Thanks." Rebecca replied.
And with that, it was just her and I again.
I leaned over to whisper in her ear, "Wanna dance?"
She nodded and I took her hand, leading her into the living room.
Some upbeat party music blasted through the speakers. It wasn't really my style, but for Rebecca's sake, I tried not to look like to much of an idiot.
I watched Rebecca sway her hips to the music, that little yellow skirt swaying with her.
'Damn...' I thought, swallowing hard.
"This is the second time I've caught you checking me out. What's the deal?" She asked with a giggle.
I froze, my mind racing for an answer. "Oh... it's jut that, um... well... you're really... uh, hot."
'Jesus Christ, what the hell is wrong with you? You sound like an idiot.'
Normally I was good with words, but with her, it seemed harder than it should be.
She giggled, a blush growing on her cheeks. "Well, thanks... You're not so bad yourself."
"Really..? I mean... uh, thank you."
She giggled again. "No problem. Now, if we could only teach you how to dance."
I let out a small laugh. "This music isn't really my style."
"I can tell." She replied with a humorous smile.
I gave her a playful nudge. "Hey, you wanna go for a ride?"
"Sure."
'Wait, did she really just agree to that?'
"Ok, cool, um, I gotta grab my keys, I'll meet you outside."
She flashed me a smirk before making her way outside.
I shook my head in disbelief and made my way to my jacket in Wendy's room.
When I walked in, I saw her sitting on her bed, crying.
"Hey, what's wrong?" I asked softly.
"Nothing..." She mumbled, clearly drunk.
"Was this because I beat you at beer pong?" I joked, trying to lighten the mood.
"No... it's just that..." She released a heavy sigh. "Nothing..."
I sat next to her on the bed. "Hey, c'mon, we're best friends. You can tell me anything, you know that."
She lowered her head. "That's the problem."
"What do you mean?"
She met my gaze. "Skylar..."
"What..?"
She suddenly stood, throwing her arms in the air with an angry groan.
"What? Tell me..."
She shook her head and sighed. "Dammit... Fine... Skylar, I love you."
I nodded. "I know, I love you to."
Her shoulders slumped. "Ugh... not like that... I mean I... love you, love you..."
I just stared at her for a second, mouth hanging open. "Uh..."
Before she could respond, I stood, grabbed my jacket, and exited her room, letting my feet take me as far away from her as possible.
"Shit, SHIT, SHIT!!"
I leaned against the wall and put my head in my hands.
I shouldn't have ran out on her, but I didn't know what else to do.
"Skylar, you alright?"
I heard the familiar voice before I saw her.
"Yeah, I'm fine, Jen."
"Are you sure? You don't look fine to me..." She replied, stepping closer to me.
I put my hand up. "Really, I'm ok."
"But, you don't look ok..."
Before I could respond, she leaned in and kissed me passionately on the lips.
'What the hell was going on around here?' I thought, throwing my arms up, defeated.
Before I could push her away, though, I heard the last voice I wanted to hear in this moment.
"Skylar wh-"
I looked over and saw Rebecca standing there, a sad look in her eyes.
"Rebecca, it's not what it looks like..." I defended.
"Well, it looks like you're kissing some girl after you asked me to go for a ride."
Ok, so it was exactly what it looked like, but it wasn't supposed to happen.
"Rebecca, this wasn't supposed to happen. I only came up to get my keys, but I saw Wendy crying and then she told me she loved me so, I ran away. But, then Jen here grabbed me and kissed me and now... you're here..."
"Sounds like I was a backup to your backup..." She replied, tears forming in her eyes.
"It's not like that, Rebecca, I promise, this was all a mistake. You're the only one I want..." I said, taking a hesitant step towards her.
"Well, maybe you should've told them that... And to think, I was actually starting to like you. I thought you were different, but you're exactly what everyone says you are." She said before storming out.
I pushed past Jen and tried to stop Rebecca, but she wouldn't listen to me.
"Dammit... Rebecca! Wait!" I called out.
I ran down the stairs, but she was already walking out the door... walking out of my life...
