Chapter 10

"Guys." Abi said as two more space whales and a hell of a lot more Chitauri came through the portal.

"Call it, Captain." Tony said.

"All right, listen up." Steve started. "Until we can close that portal, our priority is containment. "Barton, I want you on that roof, eyes on everything. Call out patterns and strays. Stark, you got the perimeter. Anything gets more than three blocks out, you turn it back or you turn it to ash."

"Can you give me a lift?" Barton asked Stark.

"Right. Better clench up, Legolas." Tony said as he gripped Barton's quiver and flew them both off.

"Thor, you've gotta try and bottleneck that portal. Slow them down. You've got the lightning. Light the bastards up." Steve said and Thor took off. "Abi you deal with any strays, bring down their speeders." Abi took off and Steve turned to Natasha. "You and me, we stay here on the ground, keep the fighting here. And Hulk. Smash." The hulk grinned and set off smashing any aliens in his path.

Thor began to use the Chrysler building as an electrical conductor. Once he had enough power he shot it at the portal; incinerating the speeders and forcing a few more space whales back up through it. Everyone was doing their own thing. Tony was flying round shooting at them and crashing them into tight corners; the hulk was hunting down anything he could find and taking on the space whales; Thor was incinerating everything; Barton was shooting anything that came within his reach; Abi was smashing them all into the ground; Steve was fighting everything hand to hand and Natasha had hitched a lift on one of the speeders to get to Stark tower.

The army finally arrived but did little to help out. Steve had gone to help out some people trapped in a building. He got the people to safety but a Chitauri threw a grenade at him which blasted him out of the window onto a car.

"Steve!" Abi yelled as she flew to him. She helped him off the car. "You good?"

He nodded. "Yeah. You?"

"For the time being." She muttered as she crashed a few speeders.

They went back to fighting.

"Jarvis? You ever hear the tale of Jonah?" Tony asked as he came up to one of the space whales.

"I wouldn't consider him a role model." The AI replied.

Tony flew straight at the ting and went straight into its mouth. Abi watched as it began to sort of internally explode and Tony came flying out the other end.

"Now I really have seen it all." She muttered to herself as she carried on fighting.

They were beginning to get out numbered and overwhelmed. But they continued to fight; they sure as hell were not about to go down without one. When they didn't think anything could get worse Fury radioed Tony to warn him of a nuke headed straight for the city.

"Abi?" Stark radioed.

"Yeah." She said with a grunt as she pushed a Chitauri off her.

"How big of a blast can your powers contain?" He asked.

"Why?" She replied.

"I've got a nuke headed straight for the city." He told her.

"I can't contain a blast radius of that size." She told him. "But I can clear you a path to the portal."

"That sounds good."

They carried on fighting and Abi cleared a way to the tower.

"I can close it." Natasha said over the comms. "Does anyone copy? I can shut the portal down."

"Do it!" Steve replied.

"No! Wait" Stark warned.

"Stark these thigs are still coming." Steve said.

"We've got a nuke coming in." Abi replied.

"It's going to blow in less than a minute." Stark added. "And I know just where to put it." Stark caught up to the thing and began to direct it towards the portal. "Roger's, we clear?" He asked.

"Yes. Yes, we are." She said as she crashed the last few speeders in that area.

"Stark, you know that's a one-way trip." Steve stated.

Abi made sure it was clear before landing near Steve and Thor and watching as Tony disappeared into the portal. They all held their breath and waited for Stark to reappear. All of a sudden all the Chitauri collapsed as if they were all connected to the same mother ship. Abi guessed they were and Tony had just destroyed it.

"Come on, Stark." Natasha muttered as she waited to close the portal.

"Close it." Steve muttered when he didn't reappear.

So she did. She disconnected its power source and the beam of light disappeared. The portal began to collapse in on its self. At the last minute Tony began to fall back through.

"Son of a gun." Steve muttered.

Abi could tell something was wrong as Stark began to free fall. "He's not slowing down." She said.

Both Abi and Thor prepared to take off. But before they could the hulk came hurtling across and grabbed him out of the air before crashing next to the other three. They ran across and Thor flipped him over and ripped off his mask.

"Is he breathing?" Steve asked.

Abi shook her head and the four of them stood looking glum. Until the hulk roared and somehow managed to scare Tony back to life. He started breathing fast.

"What the hell?" Tony muttered. "What just happened? Please tell me nobody kissed me."

"We won." Steve said with a smile.

"Alright, yay." Tony said as he laid his head back with a sigh of relief. "Hurray. Good job, guys. Let's not come in tomorrow. Let's just take a day. Have you ever tried shawarma? There's a shawarma joint about two blocks from here. I don't know what it is, but I wanna try it." Stark rambled.

"We're not finished yet." Thor said looking up to the tower where Loki was.

"And then Shawarma after?" Tony asked.

Loki was trying to climb the stairs but turned to face all of the Avengers.

"If it's all the same to you, I'll have that drink now." Loki said.
