Chapter 10
"Take a good look Cale-kun, this is the life your father has been living" Safe and cozy in his father's arms, Cale opened his eyes, brownish-red irises greeting the world. Immediately his eyes were feasted by the sight of his father's crew firing at the attacking sea monsters without breaking the bubbles lining the Red Force. How?
'..What the hell...' Shanks smiled broadly at the similar lightning in his son's eyes.
That's right, the lightning that showed determination, the lightning that showed gluttony, the lightning that showed aspiration and an obvious thirst. Cale had inherited his love for freedom and his determination to explore the ocean. Cale was his bloodline, so it was no surprise that the beautiful baby would grow up to be a young man with a great love for freedom.
Hours later the crew gathered on the main deck after Building Snake shouted that they would be arriving in a few minutes. As usual, Shanks was ahead of all his friends, of course Cale was safe and cozy in his arms. Shanks had no intention of letting go of his son after Hongo said their sweet baby was running a small fever as his weak body was shocked by the extreme temperature change.
Cale had just finished his bath, he was wearing a red t-shirt covered by a thick white jacket with a fluffy head, his father dressed him in comfortable sweatshirt pants and a pair of fashionable shoes that were very soft, Cale felt perfect and to be honest he was a little sleepy but the euphoria of the adventure kept him refreshed despite the fever.
How could he not? This island was the third island he visited after Maru and Sabaody. Cale felt very excited, his heart wondered if this was the feeling his father felt every time their ship landed? How long had his father been a pirate? Would he also be able to enjoy this refreshing feeling of freedom if he followed in his father's footsteps as a pirate?.
Of course, all of that would remain an unreachable wishful thinking if Cale's body condition was still this weak. He was sure he would die a horrible death within hours or even minutes of setting sail on his own.
However, Cale had already realized that the world was crazy, a fickle ocean that was willing to slap you with extreme weather as a joke, sea monsters as big as castles hiding behind the waves, fruits that gave you superpowers (this made Cale remember the earth), strange powers that came from inner beliefs, various unique races that were ready to destroy your body and an absolute world government. Cale is reborn in an unpredictable world.
Not to mention a broken society, ruthless pirates who are free to destroy every island for trivial reasons, slavery is taught and the world government turns a blind eye to the atrocities that occur everywhere. The laws of humanity seem meaningless on some islands while another island prosper by extorting the rights of others. Such an horrible world huh? Yes it is, that's why Cale doesn't want to die miserably without doing anything that make him happy.
The world was too bad to fix and Cale didn't intend to go through the hassle of being an oversleeping hero and fixing it, after all his comrades weren't here, Cale was reluctant to sacrifice anything anymore. In this life Cale just wanted to live according to his wishes, his mission and purpose was 'to live according to his heart' and it seemed that his father, Akagami no Shanks also lived by the same principle.
One of his biggest desires now is to be able to stand on his own two feet and start walking.
Cale couldn't wait to be able to walk, he couldn't wait to feel the softness of the sand on his feet, the cool breeze that brushed his hair and the small waves that tickled the soles of his small feet. Let's not forget the beautiful shells that shone in the sunlight and the fresh seafood that was enough to fulfill his daily protein intake.
Cale wanted to walk beside his father, enjoy the sunrise, run around on the beach, hunt for crabs, and spend the rest of the afternoon drinking the coconut water his father got by climbing the tree. Laughing together at silly things, eating grilled fish with salt for dinner, singing strange songs together and resting comfortably in his father's arms while watching the sparkling stars in the sky.
All of that may sound silly and childish for a baby with a soul age of over a hundred years like himself, but both the original Cale and Rok-soo always kept that desire deep in their hearts. The parental affection that they haven't felt and gotten right in a long time might have dulled their love detection senses, the insensitivity of both of them unknowingly causing misunderstanding parties here and there.
But that doesn't mean they are unaware of their own deepest desires, both of them are mature men physically as well as in mind and soul. Both of them just always try to divert those painful feelings and choose to do something that they think is more useful than satisfying their inner child. But deep, deep in their hearts, the thirst was still there, the debt of nurture tangible, burning their throats and ravaging their feelings.
Cale no longer felt denial or pretended not to know, living more than a hundred years was enough to make him understand that no matter how great he was in the eyes of his colleagues as captain of team one, deep inside, Rok-soo was still a poor boy who had difficulty trusting. No matter how far his feet go, no matter how many monster heads he slashes, no matter how exciting it feels when he drives his boss crazy, no matter how loyal the team is to him, it's not enough to make Rok-soo feel comfortable and relax his guard.
The daggers are always under his pillow, one is in his pants pocket while the others are scattered in important corners of his room. Rok-soo never slept more than three hours, his brain automatically made him think that staying up late and doing work in a warning state of depression was the perfect solution to distract his bitter memories, well not that anyone could help him anyway. In short, Rok-soo is a heavy workaholic.
His habits were still going on when the war broke out in the Roan Empire, which was still a Kingdom at that time. Cale likes to give his family almost a heart attack every day with his actions that are always beyond reason. Wounded all the time, blood splattered everywhere, lack of rest and the highlight was almost dying because he stabbed himself in the heart.
The toxic habits were reduced little by little after Cale managed to kill White Star and solve all the problems caused by the gripping war. Cale learned to trust his comrades and relax his vigilance. Cale lived a quiet life and managed to spend his old age surrounded by the people he loved.
Cale was happy that he could attend Alberu's coronation ceremony as the new emperor, see the children he adopted grow up to be great people, accompany his two younger siblings from adolescence to marriage, spoil his nephews and nieces as a wealthy single uncle and live as the most beloved person on two continents.
Just as the original Cale now inhabits Rok-soo's body, the man learns to forgive and love himself. His life during wartime was harsh and his childhood through adolescence as a lonely, ostracized scum of society was anything but pleasant. Cale did not regret it, really, even though his decision caused him really hard mental damage when all his family members died horribly without him being able to take revenge.
And after reuniting with his mother's reincarnation who is now his adopted nephew, Rok-soo (Og Cale) learns that he was too dependent on himself, assuming everyone else wouldn't understand his plight when in fact it was he who closed himself off and prevented others from entering his heart.
From team one Rok-soo learns the importance of cooperation and complementarity to survive, from the reincarnation of his mother Rok-soo learns to show his love and care for others, from Cale (Og Rok-soo) Rok-soo learns to use his strength to protect the people he loves as a sign of his deepest love.
Cale and Rok-soo are constantly reminded that they are still humans who need other humans, not priests or gods. Both of them never tire of learning something new every day, about the great art of letting go and the beauty of life once the burden is lifted from the mind. Both of them are not perfect figures without impenetrable gaps, no. Slowly both of them will continue to grow and matured. Slowly, both of them will continue to grow and bloom in the place where they live.
"Captain! We will enter the ship's path now!
"Yosha! Prepare yourselves!"
"Aye aye Captain!"
And Cale would continue to open a new page in the special book in his heart to write the story of his present and future adventure.
..........................................................................
"Oyaji, did you feel that yoi?" Marco, Shirohige's first mate and first son turned his wings back into arms after landing safely on his father's shoulders.
Moby dick, their giant ship was parked perfectly at the Fishman kingdom shipyard along with a line of allied small ships. They were forced to stop to replenish their supplies before lifting anchor and setting sail for the New World.
"Gurarararara! I feel it son, I didn't think we'd meet my grandson so soon" Shirohige's laughter shook Marco a bit, but it didn't matter to the pineapple-haired man, he chuckled along with his father.
"Cale-kun is it? It's a pity that we didn't have a chance to get to know him better back then" said a beautiful man to whom Marco and Shirohige nodded.
"I want to meet him! I'm sure he's mega adorable! Do I need to prepare a welcome cake and buy him a present? Is a teddy bear good enough? Or maybe a knit hat? Ah ah how about a big cat pillow? Will he drown-"
Their brother with the unique hairdo, the chatty chef Thatch excitedly interrupted his two brothers and started to describe what he wanted to do with their new nephew, his curiosity about Cale was justified as the man was on a mission when Cale and Akagami arrived.
"Stop Thatch, you'll scare Cale-kun with that behavior" Namur, a fish-man taunted Thatch as he smacked him lightly on the head.
"I'm just being curious!" Thatch swatted Namur's hand away and cleaned up his hair that was messed up by his brother.
"Nu uh, and all that usually ends up being a bad situation" Namur continued.
"Oh come on, it's not that bad right?" Thatch tried to seek sympathy from his two brothers and his father, but all he got was super flat stares from Marco and Izou plus a faint chuckle from his father.
"It's unfair! You guys are big meanie" Thatch puffed out his cheeks while everyone laughed at his ugly expression.
............................................................................
'Woah... This is so unexpected' A pair of beautiful red eyelids protecting reddish-brown pupils were now wide open. Red force was parked perfectly next to Moby dick, Cale didn't know why his father and Akagami's crew were laughing when they saw the big ship.
Cale was currently under Hongo's care because the ship's doctor was afraid that their beloved stupid captain would accidentally make Cale's condition worse with his unpredictable absurd behavior. Why would Hongo think that? Of course so, anyone would forbid Shanks from holding his baby when a grown man with the mental capacity of half a child was jumping for joy, running around like a toddler at the age of thirty.
"I can't wait to meet all the beautiful mermaids," Howling gab said as he scratched his neck.
"I heard there's a new three-star restaurant open to humans around here, want to take a look?" Lime Juice put on an ignorant expression with a strange grin on his face.
"Oi Hongo! Want to come with us? We're sure you'll like it" Lucky who couldn't resist the invitation to eat good food tried to invite the doctor.
"Heck no, keep your ass away from Cale-kun, you'll only poison the air he breathes with your decomposed dirty brain cells" Hongo said in a fierce tone, both of his hands trying to cover the ears of Cale who was sitting on the stroller.
"Rude" Lime Juice said.
"Introverted bastard" continued Yassop.
"No, not just 'introvert', he has social anxiety, the man is also an insomniac jerk" mocked Lucky, as usual the man could cook anywhere.
"Bitch, get lost" Hongo raised his middle finger.
"See? He doesnt even try to deny it" Lucky responded with a fierce gaze.
Hongo and Lucky stuck out their tongues at each other before finally separating.
They all scattered after being given directions by Shanks. Shanks asked Building Snake and Bonk Punch to buy some ship maintenance supplies along with their shipmen, Lucky, Lime Juice and Howling Gab would go get their food suply while Yassop and Benn would walk straight to the legal or illegal weapons shop to finish off their stock of gunpowder.
And the last there were Hongo and Monster who walked towards the central city to buy medical supplies and look for a medical drug store to buy a medicine for Cale's fever because Hongo happened to run out of medicine for his captain's son. And Hongo couldn't just entrust Cale's treatment to a fish-man doctor who clearly hated humans.
As usual, the view in the city center of this island is very pleasing to the eye, colorful coral in various shapes, a variety of unique plants, clear sea water that is not contaminated by anything, children's laughter echoing in every corner of the street, and of course the sadistic looks from many passing fishmen and mermaid.
Well at least they won't attack a baby in any race as soon they see it. Even though the view was as beautiful as that, Cale couldn't see it, because unfortunately Cale didn't have the strength to keep his eyes open. The eleven month old baby actually didn't want to sleep but his body couldn't, because he was dizzy and tired, Cale finally fell asleep in his special high quality stroller.
"Hei look, a human"
"Why are there humans here? Aren't all Whitebeard's crew who visiting us now near the palace?"
"I Can't believe that guy brought his demon spawn here"
"It's a shame that we are prohibited from harming children of any race."
Whispers like that filled Hongo's ears, the thread of his forehead throbbed with annoyance. Gosh, if they really intended to gossip, could they not make such a big noise? They thought Hongo couldn't hear him? What a coward, too bad that Hongo could hear it as clear as the roar of the wind.
'Those bitch! Haaah can't do, I can't do that' Hongo let out a long sigh, trying to draw out all the emotions that were coming his way. Ah damn, he wanted to beat up whoever said that nonsense about his captain's son.
Not that Hongo wanted to sound good or anything, if the situation was normal maybe those people wouldn't be able to breathe easily without feeling pain because Hongo likes to kick the backs of people he doesn't like, in any form and from any origin, Hongo is not picky in attacking opponents.
It's just that this time his little patient is struggling with a fever and Hongo doesn't want the baby's head to get dizzy because of the vibrations he produces when fighting, plus the fish man island is Shirohige's territory. Well even though Hongo knew Shanks always didn't care who the enemy he fought was and fought without question when it came to the people the red head cared about, but still the young doctor wanted to minimize the number of enemies that were difficult and sounded impossible to defeat for several reasons, hence Hongo chose to remain silent.
'Patience Hongo-kun, patience...' He thought to himself.
After walking for several minutes, Hongo finally managed to arrive at the large medical drugstore in the city center. The painful glance remained and intensified as he entered the store and selected some medicines. Hongo bought a lot of medicine considering he was a doctor on a ship full of idiot men who couldn't take care of themselves and acted like uncontrollable toddlers.
In the middle of choosing, Hongo realized that the medicine for fever and herbs to relieve lungs that were safe for babies were not in the main display case where he was standing. The blonde-haired man turned his gaze in a rather quick motion and sighed in relief when his eyes caught the items he needed. It turned out that the two items he was looking for were in the glass cabinet behind the shop owner, it seemed that theft had occurred here and the Owner tried to minimize theft by putting expensive ingredients in a glass cabinet that was locked tightly.
Hongo walked to the cashier to pay for everything he took as well as to ask for two items in the glass cabinet.
"Excuse me, can I get that special medicine and the herbs next to it?" He asked politely while pointing at the items he wanted with the thumb of his right hand.
"No way, those two items are too valuable to sell" said the shop owner who was a fish man with a disgusted expression. Hongo held back the business smile on his face, trying not to raise his foot onto the head of the bastard fish-man.
"But my son needs them and I think this is the only place that sells them, so could you be so kind and sell them to me? Whatever the price is I'll pay" Hongo tried to lower his tone so as not to be conspicuous.
"No I won't, I don't even care if the useless thing that breathes there dies right now" Oh ho that's it, that's it. To hell with the fish man who had a heartache for humans, to hell with the enmity between the two Yonkou that might happen later, Hongo wanted to teach this foolish man who dared to insult a child, especially the son of the man Hongo admired, the captain of the Akagami Pirate Crew, a lesson.
"You really want this huh? Ah shit... Well... Captain will allow this right? After all, he loves Joshua-kun so much" Hongo moved Cale's stroller aside and told Monster to take care of him, handing the gun into the hands of the smart monkey, trust me Hongo knew what he was doing right now.
Bam!
The loud sound of wood table splitting received great attention from passersby and customers inside the shop. Smoke was recognized from the scattered piles of powdered medicine that came from the jars shattered by the impact of Hongo's kick. After the smoke cleared, everyone subconsciously held their breath as their two (or more) eyes caught sight of the shopkeeper's body lying on his stomach with Hongo's legs on his back. All of that shitty revenge drama was happen in the three second.
"Asshole! What the hell?!" The fish-shaped man tried to get up but couldn't, Hongo's power was stronger than his own.
"Still dare to ask? Why do you think it is, huh? Acting like an total jerk even though I asked nicely" Hongo continued to press his foot, causing the fish man to scream in pain.
The place started to get crowded, the foul whispers turned into screams full of curses directed straight at Hongo, calling him crazy and ordering him to stop his desperate actions. Well not that Hongo cared, after all most of the fishmen and mermaids always hated humans no matter what, not that Hongo could blame them for that, because he admitted that often humans slapped demons with their greed and cruelty.
But mocking the life of a child was not something anyone should do. Hongo believes that all children are born pure, it is the environment and parental upbringing factors that shape a child's mindset and personality. According to him, no one should play with a child because Hongo understands very well what it feels like to be a child who is unwanted, a child who bears a mental wound from his mother that never heals.
Let's say Hongo overreacted, let's say Hongo got too carried away, But Hongo had already made it his life principle after his mother died in her own hands, that he would not let anything bad happen to the innocent children before his eyes.
"Despising the life of an innocent child, do you think you deserve to breathe clean air? Your existence only taints the air my son's breathes" Hongo's glare made several fishmen step back from Cale's stroller.
"What do I care about that demon spawn! A useless thing that carries the evil of its parents, the cruelty of its species, you're the one who should stay away from us you crazy human!" One of the mermaids shouted with an index finger pointing at Cale who was fast asleep without showing any sign of disturbance, Cale would not know how much Hongo was grateful for the sleeping ability of his captain's son.
"He's right!"
"Go away scum!"
"We don't welcome you here! You and that little devil should get out!
The commotion intensified, more and more citizen were shouting at Cale even saying that Cale didn't deserve to live because he was a human baby. Hongo held his fist until it bled, his teeth chattered loudly and veins appeared on his neck. He was really going to explode in a few seconds.
"Bastard-" Hongo was about to raise the air pistol in his pants pocket.
"Oi oi what's going on?!" A voice Hongo recognized made the Akagami ship's doctor lower the air pistol he was about to pick up.
"Hongo! What the- Yassop, hold Hongo!" The shout apparently came from the vice captain of the Akagami Crew, Benn Beckman. Next to Benn was the man who liked to wear kimonos, the 16th division commander of the Shirohige pirates, Izou. It seems that Benn and Yassop met the fellow gun user at a weapon shop.
Benn immediately mobilized Yassop to calm Hongo down after seeing the great anger on the always calm and collected doctor's face.
"Hongo, what's going on? Why is it like this huh? It's not like you!" Yassop held Hongo's shoulders by wrapping one arm around him.
"This bastard..." Benn and Yassop listened to Hongo's every word spoken with emphasis and a harsh tone.
"Saying that our Joshua is a spawn of evil who doesn't deserve to live" Hongo's anger-filled words made the cigarettes in Benn and Izou's mouths drop instantly.
"What did you say? He did what?" The three man asked at the same time.
Hongo swatted away Yassop's arm and removed his foot from the shopkeeper's back. The man walked over to the glass cabinet and grabbed the two items he wanted then left the large sum of money his captain gave him as compensation for the table he smashed and others on the shopkeeper's headhead and that fish man pass out when the bag of coins hit his head.
"No wonder this normally calm boy is throwing a big tantrum" Yassop whispered softly, everyone on board the Red Force knew that Hongo was always sensitive to children conditions.
"I'm sorry Hongo-san, I promise something like this won't happen again" Izou apologized with a rather tense face. The smooth-faced man was afraid that Shanks would take action against his father's territory on this one considering it was his biological son who was being belittled here. After all, Fishman Island was Shirohige's territory and Izou knew his father's pride would be tarnished by this incident.
"No, it's my fault too, I was consumed by my emotions, I'm sorry Benn-san" Hongo bowed in front of his vice-captain but his face showed no guilt at all. Benn sighed harshly, although he seemed calm, Hongo was indeed as crazy as almost everyone on board the Red Force, acting according to instinct and belief.
"Haaah, as long as you apologize as well as compensate" Hongo nodded slowly and walked over to Cale, checking on the baby and sighed as he realized his fever had dropped a little thanks to his sleep.
"Izou and Yassop, I hope this incident doesn't come to our captain's ears." Benn continued, this matter would definitely get long if his childish captain heard this.
"I agree, Oyaji doesn't need to know about this" Izou nodded in agreement.
"Right, I agree too" Yassop also nodded his head.
"Izou-san! Why are you defending that crazy man!" A mermaid shouted at him followed by another shout saying the same thing.
"Why do you say that? Do you know whose baby you are depriving of life?" Izou said in a fierce tone, gosh why is everything so complicated like this?.
Everyone was silent, each individual fearing commander Shirohige's anger, especially Izou who never looked angry.
"That baby's name is Joshua, one of the children of the Akagami pirate crew, do you think Akagami Shanks will just stand by when his friend's son is threatened? Are you trying to create a war between the fish-man island and Yonkou Akagami?" Izou's words silenced all the fishmen and mermaids present.
Akagami no Shanks was known as a Yonkou who was not bound by anything and was always free to do anything because of his power and free spirit, including destroying a region because they did not like him. Although fish humans are famous for their strength, they still cannot fight Yonkou so easily. The anger directed at the innocent baby simply disappeared.
"A-Akagami? Damn it."
The whispers died away and the assembled group of fishmen islanders began to disperse, leaving only four men and a stroller with a baby and a monkey hanging from it.
"Benn-san, we need to get back to the ship as soon as possible, we don't know when Joshua's condition will worsen" Hongo opened Cale's thick jacket as a form of first aid.
"How about we head to the Mini moby? One of those is nearby" Izou gave a suggestion as an apology and Hongo nodded his head, he needed a medical room as soon as possible.
And the four men left the medicine store without saying anything.
...........................................................................
