Plot:

Queen Astrid, a young woman, is the sole ruler of a prestigious kingdom that overlooks the largest lake in existence.

After the death of her husband King Indulf III, she has been bitter, ferocious, and unpredictable. She has waged wars with surrounding kingdoms at the drop of a hat many times and has been successful in her endeavors.

A petty feud over a resource that Queen Astrid already has brings on a massive war that leads to multiple casualties on both sides.

As a bargaining tool Queen Astrid has taken the only son and heir to the throne, Prince Munro, and is keeping him prisoner. Planning to use him to gain control over his father, King Augustus.

King Augustus won't bargain with her for the life of his son, which infuriates Queen Astrid. She interrogates Prince Munro for secrets, which she can use to destroy his father. Prince Munro, though a bit younger than she, is wise and loyal to his kingdom.

Astrid takes on more extreme measures and sends an attack on the neighboring kingdom, slaughtering innocent people as well as their military. She claims the battle a success and once again tries to use Prince Munro as a bargaining tool.

The war becomes about more than just petty resources and other kingdoms become involved. Astrid tries again to get the son to turn on his father and spends weeks trying to seduce him, manipulate him.

As she works her way into the heart of Prince Munro she finds herself falling for him. She sneaks away frequently to spend time with him and starts to become reckless with her trust.

Prince Munro finally agrees to help her and they devise a strategy to take over the kingdom.

Astrid spends time with Munro, allowing him into the castle, while her army is away, and there is no one to reprimand her. They enjoy the night together, but it ends in tragedy when Munro is killed and Astrid is taken hostage by his father's men.

Queen Astrid is kept imprisoned in King Augustus' kingdom and he has taken over her kingdom as well, subjecting her people to terrible things.

Queen Astrid has time to reflect on all of her mistakes, to mourn the death of her new love, and of the lives she took as she is held in the small cell. She awaits her death, hoping that it will come soon, and refuses any food that is given to her.

Just when she is about to give in to the thoughts of taking her own life she is visited by Prince Munro himself. He explains to her the plan he and his fathered had come up with to take over her kingdom, which included him getting captured on purpose.

She is livid that she fell for their plan even with Munro's apology. Munro visits her quite often and tells that he couldn't help but to have fallen in love with her.

Astrid plays along as though she is too in love with him, that she wants to run away with him. To give the ultimate slap in the face to his father.

It takes time, but Munro agrees to run away with her. Munro sneaks her away in the wee hours of the night, but not without some conflict.

When they are safely away from the kingdom, Astrid requests that they go back to a place she needs to go before they leave. Munro agrees and they go.

Once they reach the forest Astrid asked him to go to she knocks him out. She takes him to her kingdom and visits her army. They are grateful for her return.

She puts Munro back into a prison cell and she and her knights burn down King Augustus' entire kingdom.
