Part III: Chapter 11
The idea was to make this the longest chapter in the book but I don't think that will happen. It is one of the longest though.
Here we are. The last chapter of the main story.
I won't speak anymore. Let's just go onwards with the story.
............
Seven-thousand years.
That's how long it had been.
7,000 years of peace, of unity, of solidarity as one realm. Since the Emperor of Soleria stepped down and retreated to who knows where. Since negotiations between Soleria and Luneith came into play and the animosity and prejudice between the people slowly started to disappear.
7,000 years since they had been gone.
He remembered it like it was yesterday. The vivid image of the large and powerful force of Creation erupting at the centre of his brother's final destruction. It had pushed away everyone, from either side of the bridge. Had driven everyone out of the Celestial planes so that all that could be seen was a mix of red green and black. Not even the exquisite and endless celestial sky could be seen.
No one could go through the planes for close to one thousand years. Portals between both realms had been constructed in order to manage peace negotiations and the continuing progress into becoming one. Even with the restrictions and reservations that the people had, Felix and the others were determined to do as Creation declared. With the help of the many who were there to witness her declaration and stand by her and her allies- the six appointed by her to guide the realms into the peace she desired- it made things easier.
Six thousand years ago, the magic cleared up.
That was when things truly began to change.
What used to be the vast planes which never ended, became a small piece of land, each and every part of it visible for all to see. In the middle, lay two bodies, peaceful and undisturbed, as if they belonged there.
............
The bodies lay on a slab of stone, raised from the ground like a pedestal. Upon closer look, there seemed to be inscriptions written on it, what was later confirmed as not a language, but the magic of Creation in a more visible form of communication.
Felix was the first one to go towards them, and he gently trudged amongst the grass and flowers and vines which sprouted around to reach the two.
"Is it them?" Someone from behind him, part of the entourage which was picked to follow the 'Order of the Guardians' (as the people had dubbed the six of them who were entrusted with the safekeeping of the realms) to investigate the phenomenon at the Celestial planes.
Without even a glance at their faces, Felix already knew. But he still went right up to them to check, only to find that the stone was surrounded by a magical barrier to protect the two figures which lay there. From what he could see, they were side by side, both faces expressing their peace as their hands connected and they stayed in each other's presence. It was a far cry from the torment they both had dealt with for many years.
For that, Felix felt relieved.
Even though he couldn't get close to them, he could still see their faces and so he answered, "It is."
"Are they dead?"
He was unsure. How would he be able to tell when he couldn't get closer? He couldn't even tell if they were breathing, but the thing with immortals was that they didn't necessarily show they were breathing at all times. There was no need to. And that made it harder to deliberate whether or not they were alive from where he was standing.
"The answer to that is yes and no."
Felix turned and greeted the newcomer, "Master Fu. You made it."
As another ally of the princess, Master Fu would sometimes join the Order in advising their work. So Felix had gotten to know a lot about him through working together. Privately, they would exchange stories of Adrien and Marinette- Felix had been surprised that Master Fu had met Adrien once before the war when he was young- and they would reminisce about the days in which the two seemed the happiest as well as when they had been at their worst.
He nodded before holding his hand to his chest and bowing his head, "I greet the Guardians and their people," he lifted his head, "I apologise for being late."
Felix shook his head, "Not at all. You're just in time," he gestured to the resting place of his brother and sister, "What do you mean by yes and no?"
"The Goddess of Creation had shown to be more powerful than ever. She had used her knowledge of the past and gained greater strength in order to do what she did that day. And for that to be possible, she had to die."
She already did it twice before. She knew it would likely work once again.
"But why?"
"Look around you," he lifted his hand in the air, the other holding onto his staff which never seemed to leave him, "The prophecy has almost been fulfilled."
"What makes you say that?" Luka asked as she and the others began to walk to where Felix- who was looking around upon Master Fu's instruction- was.
"Because the Celestial lands were never meant to part the two realms forever. Soon the final bit of magic will clear and Soleria will be seen from Luneith. Luneith will be seen from Soleria."
Alya gasped, her hands coming up to cover her mouth, "Are you saying-"
Alix patted her shoulder and grinned, "Everything is finally becoming one. Like it should have been from the beginning."
"And what about them?" Kagami intervened, "How can they be dead and alive at the same time? Because is that not what you were implying?"
"As I said, Creation took her knowledge of the past and enhanced it, creating a barrier for herself and Destruction as their spiritual forms rebuild. It needed to be big to contain all of their energy and the Celestial lands were the perfect area for that. After all, it had been quite vast until now. It seems that now, Creation and Destruction are in a state of rest. In between life and death."
"But they will come back?" Nino asked hopefully as he went to hold onto Alya's hand.
Master Fu stared at the two bodies and gave a wistful smile, "They will. Though it could take many years before they do. Only when the barrier breaks will there be a sign of their return."
Felix let out a small sigh as he turned to look at them again, wishing to them, 'Come back soon.'
............
In the next two thousand years, once the people had gotten to know their saviours could very well be alive, they had decided to build a palace around Creation and Destruction, as big as the remainder of the Celestial planes. As it had been built there, it had been officially named the Celeste Palace upon completion and it had become the base of operations for the entirety of the two realms. The Order was centred there, along with the main council that would form in the coming years.
Within those years new paths and buildings had been built all around the palace and even replaced many of Soleria and Luneith's previous streets. Shops and homes were upgraded everywhere whilst the most historical and important buildings were preserved.
Soon, just as the construction of new and improved routes and buildings had been completed, Soleria and Luneith became more integrated thanks to there being no border between them anymore.
People started noticing a phenomenon they had never thought they would witness before.
The sun and the moon had started to move from their fixed positions in the sky. Like in the mortal realm, both Soleria and Luneith were seeing day and night.
"The reason why time was so different between us and the mortal realm was because we had no regulation. The never-ending warmth of the sun and the chilling air from the lonely moon. The realms began to lose their very concept of time. Of course, our time will always flow faster than the mortals, but it will be slower than before. And now we can have an exact measure of how long we would spend in the mortal realm compared to this one."
One. Not two.
Just as Alix had said, everything was becoming one.
This wasn't Soleria and Luneith anymore. This wasn't two separate realms. Just as the prophecy had probably wanted to happen, just as Marinette most likely knew what would happen, there was only one immortal realm.
And it didn't take long to come up with a name for this new realm. Because even if it was one, people would never forget how they became one, from what they became one of.
Soleith. The Immortal Realm.
That was what the people had decided on.
And as the years passed, people became more and more accepting of each other.
Communities supported each other. And for those that didn't, there were forces in place to prevent and resolve fighting, especially if people showed certain prejudice to each other. But there was always going to be those who would hate. Those who hurt. Those who attacked. There was always going to be the vulnerable and weak. But the Order wanted to build a world where everyone had a chance to say their piece.
What was a good thing was that under Felix and the other five, there was barely anyone with enough power or status who was like that anymore- though not to mean there would never be people who would be like that.
Many of the Solerian council under the last Emperor's rule had been stripped of their godly status if they opposed the big changes. Felix found it rather cruel, but it was necessary if they didn't want any of the partition supporters to have any power. Because what really was the use of their protest if not to stir up hatred once again? Regardless, they wouldn't be able to restore the magical barrier which had once separated the two realms.
The history books were corrected and children were taught what truly happened in the past, albeit it was quite watered down for the comprehension of the children. Felix worked with various scholars on both sides to create new books on the wars, with added information on the biases of both sides. Many who had witnessed or been part of the war had even given their own written accounts of their experiences, all of which were put in a large record open to the public to read. They didn't sugar-coat anything.
Then the Order of the Guardians, along with Master Fu created various volumes of books on their accounts of Marinette and Adrien's story. From what they were told and what they saw, they detailed everything they knew of the two. How they met, how they got together, how they broke up and how it affected the war. How Marinette came back without remembering that she was the Goddess and everything that happened after that. Including their adventures in the mortal realm- the section was written mostly by Alya, Nino and Luka, with Felix adding small bits here and there and Kagami including her experience of being in a coma- all the way to the first time they discovered the two together in the Celestial planes (or what was left of it) again.
Whilst not all people bothered to read the history books, a lot more were interested in these books and they had been far spread around the realm, the books immediately showed some change in people's minds, even bigger than the previous efforts of the Order and the Soleith council. The money collected from the books was inputted into the infrastructure of the entire realm when it was still being rebuilt, as well as various other areas Felix and the team wanted to provide and invest in for the peace of their new home. Plays and songs adapted from the books were also quite common and many adaptations were created. Overall, the books helped incredibly and many people were wishing for the return of Creation and Destruction.
When the palace was being built the people- without a prompt from Felix or anyone else- had added things in preparation for Creation and Destruction's return. A throne room for the two had even been built and it was clear what the people's intentions were.
They wanted the two who saved the lands to be rewarded with the right to rule over them. They wanted to strive under the courage of the two and be proud of their new home and the people who ruled over them. An entire nation praying for Creation and Destruction to come back to them and accept the title bestowed upon them, not by the Fates or the Deities or the prophecies.
An Emperor and Empress chosen by the people.
"Wake up," the realm cried, "Wake up!"
............
Felix looked around the table, nodding as the others discussed the new strategy for helping the people adjust to the varying weather that occurred as a result of the Sun and moon now moving in sync with each other. It was a discussion which took place and got improved every year for the last 7,000 years but there was always something new to add until every one of their people could live as comfortably as possible.
His eyes quickly darted to the two empty seats, larger and more extravagant than the one he and the others sat on, as his mind went back to the 7,000 years without the two the seats were meant for.
He used to frown when he looked at those seats, but these days he seemed to genuinely smile as he knew each day, they took a breath closer to the time the two would come back. Master Fu had given an update recently: The barrier was becoming weaker.
He didn't realise just how close.
He wondered how they would look sitting there, as they discussed the worries and desires of an entire realm. Would they be tense and strict as they gave orders just as Adrien had done so before? But Felix felt that with Marinette's presence, perhaps his brother would be much more relaxed as he would discuss matters of this realm. He knew that with the whole team and the Soleith council, also known as the Soleith Parliament (established after the realm had completely had its makeover and the officials of Soleria and Luneith were sorted out) behind them, it was easier to figure things out.
But things would be even livelier with Marinette and Adrien, he just knew it. They were the foundation of this entire realm, the reason for peace. Moreover, they were the reason for the people in front of him interacting together as comrades, work partners and friends. Kagami, Alya, Nino, Luka, Alix. All of them who were close to Marinette and Adrien had become like a new family to him.
All that was missing was the flowery laugh of Marinette accompanied by the bright and amused eyes of his brother which always followed her.
The sound of feet heavily hitting the cool marble floor as whoever came closer interrupted Felix's thoughts and caused him to turn his head to the large doors. They opened only a few moments later to reveal a guard heavily breathing as he attempted to catch his breath from running a long distance.
"My- my Lord," he spoke through his breaths.
Felix recognised the guard and, instantly, he stood up and ran to the guard, holding onto both of his armoured shoulders, "What's wrong- what happened? Tell me!"
Kagami came from behind and placed her hand on Felix's arm, "Calm down Felix. Give him some space. I don't think he is here to give us bad news but you seem to have scared him a bit."
Felix realised she was right as when he looked at the guard's wide expression, he had accidentally scared him, "I apologise," he dropped his hands, "I was too hasty as I know you were one of the guards watching over them today."
The guard shook his head and broke out into a smile almost as if nothing had happened, "None of that matters my Lord. It is a time to rejoice! For the Emperor has awoken!"
Before the guard knew it, he was left alone in the large room as all six of the members who had been residing there rushed passed him with only one destination in mind.
............
'It's too bright.'
That was his first thought when he opened his eyes. The sunlight streamed through the glass placed all around them and filtered through the leaves and vines and flowers which had grown all over them. It wasn't something his body was used to and he knew it would take some time for his eyes to properly adjust.
"Of course it is, my love. You have been asleep for 7,000 years after all. The last time you saw daylight with your physical eyes was quite long ago."
"Ah," his voice was raspy after not being used for so long, but he cleared it a bit before saying his next remark aloud this time, "I don't want to sleep ever again."
Her laugh echoed in his mind like a sweet melody that could become stuck in someone's head, "Don't be silly Kitty. You have to sleep even if you are a God."
He didn't acknowledge as the guard who had been standing at the entrance of the room they were in gasped and ran in shock, as he responded, "That doesn't mean I want to."
"I can already sense this becoming a problem."
He shrugged and he turned his body to finally look at her now that his eyes were adjusted better. She was still asleep but she was most definitely breathing. His hand automatically reached for her face, brushing the hair which was covering some of her face and letting it fall into a frame around her head. The smile on her face was peaceful.
"You're so beautiful," he whispered, smiling at the faint warmth radiating from her body.
Another laugh entered his mind, "And you seem to have become cheesier since you have woken. And to think I'd hear the last of it before your awakening. I was a fool."
He didn't deny that he had become cheesier, "Maybe it's because I feel lighter than ever. I don't have to refrain myself anymore."
"I like it."
"I love you."
She snorted, "Ah I'm going to have to get used to this. You weren't this bad when we were drifting around."
"You still are, technically," he pointed out, mumbling under his breath. After all, she was still clearly asleep.
"Don't worry. I'll be sticking right next to you."
"I know."
"I don't even need to move away from you to complete the last steps."
"And for that, I am grateful," he sighed, brushing his fingertips against her eyelashes. They didn't even twitch.
"You aren't mad at me, are you?" Her voice grew slightly weary, "I mean, about the fact that I told you to go back first."
He shook his head, "Of course not. I understand why you asked me to. It's not something to be mad about M'lady. Even if I am a bit sad that we couldn't come back together. You know I'll always wait for you."
"I love you too," she belatedly replied, "Anyways, here comes the ones who have been worrying to death"
He rolled his eyes at her teasing, "Like you didn't worry your pretty head off as we watched all of them. Remove the barrier properly, will you?"
She did as asked and the shield around them dissipated in an instant.
Slowly, he sat up and his eyes rested on the door the guard left open. He could already see their silhouettes inching closer and closer so he lifted his legs and turned his body so it was dangling over the edge of their resting place. He still kept one of his hands on her, this time though, he had clasped their hands together and held it tight. He rubbed the back of her hand with his thumb as he waited for them, his legs swaying back and forth in a restless manner.
"You're anxious love."
She was right, as always, "I'm fine."
"You're afraid. That they won't accept- no- that's not it. You're afraid of yourself and how they will react to seeing you. You're wondering whether or not they will see you as same or different."
Right again, "I don't know."
"Why do you think that?" She asked him.
"I... I'm not sure."
She hummed in response and he could almost see the way she would raise her eyebrows, deep in thought until she could conclude, "You think the worst because you always have done. Even when you know deep down that there's no need, you can't help it. Considering how long you have been like that, it isn't something you will unlearn easily. But I know you, my love. You can overcome anything. And I know, no matter how much you have changed or stayed the same, you are a better person than you were before."
He smiled at her reassurance and words of encouragement. Her words may have seemed a bit too brutally honest, but he knew she wasn't saying it to hurt him. Whilst they were in their spiritual forms, they had begun to work out a system to help each other figure out confusing feelings- though she helped him more than the other way- and it worked significantly for them. They each understood each other, sometimes more than they understood themselves, and telling each other straight what they believed the other was feeling helped to put those feelings into a verbal description which made sense. For Adrien especially, figuring out his emotions was more important than ever and he was relearning how to take control of them once again.
"Thanks, darling."
"You're-"
"Adrien!"
"-Welcome. Hah, I am so going to tease him about his face when I get back."
Felix was finally in view, his face scrunched so full of worry, excitement and expectation, that it was hard for Adrien not to laugh at his brother who was brimming with delight, especially when their eyes eventually met. It was hilariously sweet. And Adrien just felt an unfathomable joy when he watched his brother running up to him.
It reminded him of when they were younger, when Adrien would do something seen as wrong in the eyes of their father and Felix would prompt him to run somewhere to avoid his wrath. Later, Felix would come running to him with a similar look on his face, only this time his excitement overshadowed the worry that he undoubtedly had been feeling for the last 7,000 years, and constantly even before that (admittedly, Adrien was the troublemaker out of the two).
"Adrien!"
He was right in front of him, hands on his knees as he caught his breath, but he was looking up with a beaming smile on his face.
"Awww..."
Adrien let go of Marinette's hand and jumped off, landing right in front of his brother, "You didn't have to run so hard," he patted Felix's back lightly, "You could have just teleported, you know?"
"Hah!" Felix let out a laugh as he stood up straight. His face was exquisitely bright as he laughed with joy after hearing Adrien speak again, and he brought his younger brother into his arms "By the sun and the moon, I have missed you!"
"You weren't like this last time and I wasn't even gone for as long this time around."
"Can you blame me? At least I knew you were alive in that prison. This time no one was sure when you would wake up."
Adrien took a step back and looked, not just at Felix, but the whole group, "We could hear you guys and see the people praying for us to wake up. It made us even more determined. Now that everything is mostly settled, I was able to come back."
"What do you mean Adrien? Settle what?"
"This new realm. The reason it has become one. Marinette and I have been just about everywhere just to destroy the opposing energies of the two realms still in the atmosphere and then create a new one to replace them. Not only that, but we had to go around and make sure none of Father's energy was around anymore. So now no one has to be concerned with akumatisations anymore."
"Then," Luka stepped up, glancing behind Adrien with a frown on his face, "Why isn't she awake yet?"
"Tell him not to worry about me, will you?"
Adrien looked behind him and smiled, "Don't worry about her. She just needs to replenish her energy from bringing me back to life after I had completely and utterly destroyed myself."
"Yeah, it was a real struggle you know?" She joked though he knew she would do it again and again if she had to.
"But I knew you would be able to do it," he mumbled, putting his head down, "So just take your time and come back safely."
"Did you say something?" Felix asked.
Adrien turned back to face them, "Other than that, she has a few more things to do than I did in her spiritual form, so I came back first. She'll come back. She always does."
"If it's for you, I can do anything."
............
He was dreaming, he knew he was. But it still felt so real, especially when it was induced by thoughts of her.
He always dreamed of her, it was only natural. Snippets of what their life could be like in the future, conversations- some he remembered, some he didn't- intimate encounters, dancing in the most random of places, playing and play-fighting. These dreams always had a small tinge of realness to them.
Today, however, it was like that had been amplified tenfold.
It was like he was actually able to touch her almost as if it was real. Alas, he knew this was a dream.
Still, he savoured the time he had with her, regardless of whether or not this was his dream. He had his arm wrapped around her, who was breathtakingly beautiful. For some reason, even more today. He held her in his dream as they looked over the scenery, a rendition of the prison he had been stuck in for so long- a representation of their souls. It was more beautiful than the last time he had seen it now there was no crazy, evil father there to disrupt the ethereal value the scenery erupted.
"It's been a while since I've seen this place," he said, his arms wrapped around her midsection from behind as they admired the chaotic charm this place had.
She hummed in agreement, "It's been what? Seven-thousand-five-hundred years?"
"Exactly on the mark."
"As much as I want to continue to look, we need to go to a few other places."
He raised an eyebrow, moving his arms so his hands were on either side of her waist, and he turned her around. Without the need to say anything, she understood his confusion and just smiled, beckoning him to follow her wherever she wanted to go.
He responded sincerely, "I would follow you to the highest mountain peak and the deepest depths of the ocean. I would follow you even if my legs became numb and my body became weak. Even if the realm was plunged into darkness I would follow you. Because you are my only light and love."
"Even now you know how to make me blush," she shyly replied, keeping her head facing forward as she led him to their new destination. In the blink of an eye, they were in a new but familiar place.
"This is Old Fu's house."
They were in the middle of the room where she had done most of her work as Marinette, the fairy. It was just as he had remembered in the sense that it was quite messy with books, potions, random pieces of material and ingredients scattered around. But it wasn't something he was disgusted at. All he felt when seeing it was a slight bit of nostalgia as he remembered the days they had spent there together.
Now though, it didn't look like that. Master Fu had cleaned the place a lot over the years but he had never completely moved back in, preferring the place he had retired to during the years Marinette had come back.
She tutted at him, "Don't call him that."
"Why are we here?" He ignored her.
"To sightsee. To have fun. I just felt the urge to see these places again," she answered, shrugging her shoulders carelessly, "You know. I've been thinking. This house is in a central place where travellers and anyone from both sides of the realm come through. The forest is one of the things which remained quite the same, after all. It could be a good thing to turn it into a proper medical centre."
He nodded, "I wonder why we haven't thought of that before. I'll bring it up to everyone else at our next meeting."
She turned to him again with an unreadable look on her face, "Uh, maybe wait. Don't tell them yet. I'll tell you when to do so."
Again, he looked at her, confusion written all over his face. Nonetheless, he didn't deny her request. She probably had a plan she wouldn't tell just yet but he knew she would disclose as soon as she was ready to.
They went to a few places after that. All of which were part of their memories together. The lightning field- which no longer functioned the way it used to due to the sun and moon changing entire species of plants and animals within the years they had begun to work together rather than apart. Yet the field still exuded static and was still hard to touch, despite the lightning there occurring less over time. They had gone to parts of both castles/ palaces where they had snuck around, to the places which didn't even exist anymore because of the transformation of two realms into one. They had even gone to their image of the battlefield they had spent so much of their time, emotion and effort on, remembering those who passed, those who fought, and those whom they fought for. They couldn't help but remember their worst moments had been in the Celestial lands.
Silently, they agreed that it was all in the past. It was the present they should focus on.
That didn't mean they stopped sightseeing. Marinette had a few more places on her mind where she wanted to take him. The next place they went to was the old arena- of which the only thing that remained was the bridge between their realm and the deities in real life, but it looked just as it did before it had been destroyed all those years ago. Big, spacious, echoey, overwhelming.
Slightly painful when she recalled her last memories of this place.
"I recently remembered a small detail of this place in my childhood. I used to run around this place when no one was here. My little self found this place so amusingly large and I had wanted to explore all of the areas. I ended up in the portal but it had tried to push me out as I wasn't meant to be there," she was now walking towards the pillars of the portal, and once she was close, her fingers grazed over it lightly, "But when they pushed me out, something went wrong."
"What was it?"
She looked at him, biting her lip to come up with an explanation, "Uh. How do I put this? No one really notices, but portals have an element of time to them, just as they have the other four elements. But it's not visible, so no one knows it is there, yet it is probably the most fundamental part of a portal. Without time, how can anything grow and nurture? When they pushed me, I accidentally slipped through the essence of time in the portal. It wasn't long, just for a small second. But I was exposed to it and that's what mattered. Nothing happened, or at least I thought nothing would. And then I started getting visions."
He gasped, as was the natural reaction for a statement like this. He had never known how exactly she had come to have these visions. Now he understood, "That small bit of time you were exposed to was enough to give you small snippets of the passage of time as you grew."
"Mhmm. Sometimes of things which would definitely happen. Others, of things which I was able to prevent or change," she reached her hand out to him, "Come on, love. We have one more place to go."
He took her hand and followed her to a familiar place, the most nostalgic of them all.
"This is one of the places which remain the same you know."
Knowingly, she smiled, "I'm glad it is. Shall I continue my story?" She asked him.
Flabbergasted, he pulled another face, "There's more?"
She walked to a patch of overgrown grass, the exact same spot he had seen her all those years ago and it was then that he realised why her outfit had been so alluring since the beginning of the dream.
All this time they had been going from place to place and his focus on the dress, other than the fact that it made her look like a precious stone he yearned to keep hold of, was distant, like an afterthought that was quickly dismissed as she kept his mind on the several places she took him to. And if he wasn't looking at what she was showing, he was looking at her face, noticing her subtle expressions, taking delightful observations of her thoughts which were expressed so clearly for him to see. He may have also noticed her delectable-looking blood-red lips on more than one occasion, never resisting the urge to claim them for his own.
Her lips didn't feel like the ghastly softness of her mirage which would always appear in his dreams. It felt more like when she was awake. The pressure was most definitely there during this dream.
(He wasn't complaining though.)
She was wearing a dress- not an uncommon thing to see her in, as it would have been in their early days. It was as rouge as her lips and was shaped so the skirt wasn't stiffly in place, only moving relatively small. Instead, the fabric was light, as thin as a leaf, and it blew in the imaginary wind in the dream, creating water-like ripples amongst the skirt which reached the ground and formed a trail behind her. The top, in contrast, was quite tight-fitted. It clung to her skin daringly, showing off just the right amount, in his opinion, to make her seem so exquisitely sensual yet at the same time so purely uncorrupted. The sleeves started off her shoulder, having the same design and function that her skirt had: it flowed effortlessly. The entire dress was covered in black beads and, much like before her eyes had similar black beads placed strategically around them.
To finish off the dress, a sparkly blue, almost transparent cape with a triangle-like shape cut in the middle to give the illusion of wings, was attached to the back of her dress. It was shorter than the dress itself, but it flowed just as powerfully, as the light caught each sparkle from different angles causing her to glimmer in the natural light.
But the real finish was her earrings: black pearl and ruby. The same ones he bought for her years before the war she first lost her life in had ended.
He reached out to lightly touch one of her earrings, murmuring, "You weren't wearing these before."
"You noticed," her smile grew wider than it had been, "Do you like them? More importantly, do you like the outfit altogether?"
"I'm greatly enamoured by your appearance," he playfully spoke. "I bet you can tell just by looking into my eyes."
She giggled, in a pleasant mood, before sitting down on the grass. She patted the spot next to her, "Come here, Kitty. Let me finish my story."
"Okay," he obliged, always ready to obey any order she would give him. He sat next to her and she turned a bit to face him.
She cleared her throat a bit, "You must have always wondered about that night, seeing me here. Why would I want to talk to you? Why had I been so calm around you? In truth, seeing visions, fluctuate. But at that time, I had seen a vision, a few actually. Even more than I have ever, possibly because I was only beginning to learn how to have a semblance of control over it. Regardless, it led me to this spot, right here, on that day."
"You saw us talking on that day?"
She shook her head, "Rather, I saw a future of us together. Though at that time I thought they were merely dreams. But it had me curious, you know?" She reached her hand out and he gladly clasped their hands together, "There are some temptations I will never win against, one of them being my belief that if I could dream of a future with us together, I could make it a reality. It was only after the things that happened in those dreams also happened in my reality that I realised they were my visions happening in real time. And soon I was able to create the system in my mind which would alert me of visions."
"The black eyes," he said, nodding to himself as she did the same.
"Yeah. And what I want to say is this. At first, I was resentful of these visions. I couldn't use them a lot of the time to prevent something I knew was gonna happen from happening. And when I did, things would go wrong. But I am grateful for it now. Since it led me to you. It kept on doing so. It kept me optimistic for our future, and because of it, I was able to know you would be okay. That is more than I could ever ask for. But whilst they helped a lot, even without it, as long as I would be with you, I could feel content. A life without you would be dull and depressing. Even if you just sit here, I would be excited because I love you."
"It's the same for me. If you weren't able to talk to me still, or if I couldn't at least see you in my dreams, I think I would go insane. Even though I know, eventually, you will come back to me. The thought of you is what keeps me going. Having some sort of your presence around me makes everything easier. It always has."
She grinned, "Oh, I know. Which is why the next place I will see you will be the best one yet," he looked at her weirdly, uncertain about her phrasing. There was something wrong with it but he couldn't quite place his finger on it. She quickly switched the subject, "Hmm, but first, this."
She moved forward before dropping herself in his lap. It was like second nature that he wrapped his arms around her and brought her body as close to his as possible. She wrapped her hands around his neck to give her a steady support and she lifted herself slightly so their lips would meet.
Two mouths opened in an instant, used to the contact but always incessantly hungry for the same feeling, time and time again. They melded easily together, and even in a dream, Adrien could feel the loving and steamy warmth of their embrace. Almost like it wasn't a dream at all. Yet he felt so deliriously blissful that it was making everything feel distorted. All he could see, all he could touch, all of his focus was only on her.
Adrien, wanting to satiate his never-ending hunger for her, couldn't help but move them abruptly onto the ground so he was lying on top of her. She didn't even notice, however, too caught up in the way his body was pressed so closely against him and his tongue was unashamedly exploring every bit of her mouth without any attempt to stop soon. She didn't want to stop him either.
But she could feel it. She could feel herself being pulled back. She knew that soon, this enveloping dream would come to an end.
And so she eventually tapped his strong arms which had trapped her in, causing him to stop and move up a bit, his eyebrows quirked as he wondered why she was signalling for them not to go on like they usually would.
She stared at him, serious for a few moments, making him believe that something was wrong. All of a sudden, her face morphed into a pleasant smile, her eyes shining brightly as she opened her mouth to become the bearer of good news, "Adrien. It's time."
"Time for what?" He blurted out.
"Open your eyes, Adrien."
"But they are open."
Shaking her head she replied, "You know this is a dream, my love. And I said the next place we will see each other will be the best one. So hurry. Open your eyes and come to me. Wake up! Adrien, wake..."
WAKE UP!!!
His eyes burst open.
............
"Where is she? She's going to be late," Alya complained as she held onto a small hand whose other hand was holding onto Nino's.
It was their first child, a little girl named Rania. After everything had settled and peace was restored, she and Nino finally had the courage to try for a baby again. Though it was hard, with a little help, they were able to create their beautiful little girl. The same little girl who had begged for her parents and her uncles and aunts to all go to The Night and Day Festival. Rather than the usual celebrating at the palace, she had convinced them all to join in the festivities amongst the people.
The Night and Day Festival came right before the biggest anniversary of the realm (the anniversary of the marriage of the Emperor and Empress), happening on the same day as the end of the war. It was the most important festival to the people and celebrations could last anywhere from a day to a whole month (whether that was before or after the actual date, it didn't matter). The people took their celebrations seriously.
And the results were always incredible!
The streets would be packed with vendors and stalls selling their best moon and sun-themed products. From clothes to mugs to books and paintings depicting the final moments of Adrien and Marinette before their sacrifice, or at least symbols of it. The food was always mouth-watering to look at and eating it never disappointed. Everything was delicious. And no matter where, if there were people, the place was bustling with liveliness.
Currently, it was night, but the lights hung up on every corner, every stall, every house and every structure causing it to look like the day had never left.
"She's been late for a lot of things lately," Luka commented, Alix nodding next to him as she linked arms with him (Adrien wanted to ask what was going on with them, but he was too afraid).
"Adrien," Felix turned to him, "Is everything okay with her? Out of everyone, you would know."
Adrien bit his lip to suppress his smile as he looked at the energetic and hectic scene around them- made even more eager due to their presence- and he just said, "She just needs a little more time these days. Just wait- actually, look."
He could see her coming- no- running towards them and once she spotted them, she paused and waved, "Adrien!"
The crowd went quiet when they heard someone say the Emperor's name, but when they looked to see who it was, they shrugged it off and went on about their fun day. Who else would call him that way other than the Empress herself? She wasn't hard to recognise when she was wearing an elegant but flowy outfit that matched the festivities perfectly. And people couldn't help but comment on her beauty as they passed by her in order to enjoy the day themselves.
Adrien began to run towards her, the others following behind and once he reached her, he checked over her with worry, "I told you not to run in your condition, love. It's okay if you are a little late."
She was breathing a little heavily as his hand came up to her cheek, and she leaned into it as she responded, "I know, I know. But it is almost time and I didn't want to be too late."
Little hands shook her clothes causing her to look down at the wide, adorable amber eyes belonging to Rania, "Why were you late Aunty Nette?"
Smiling, Marinette petted Rania's head, "I was helping your grandpa Fu with the automatic weather system for the farmers," she said even though she knew the little girl wouldn't understand. She giggled when said girl ran back to her parents to ask them a neverending array of questions regarding what she had just heard.
"You know you don't have to do it this time if you don't have the energy to," Adrien looked at her, concerned, "I did ask for the firework-makers to have extra just in case."
She shook her head, placing her hand on her stomach, "I have more than enough energy for the both of us, my love."
"What!" Alya screamed from behind them, making Rania huff at the noise.
"I knew it!" Alix exclaimed (Of course she would know).
"Marinette," Kagami looked at her excitedly, "Are you-"
Adrien wrapped his arm around Marinette's waist, grinning as he stroked her stomach lovingly, "We are."
"Woah dude! Congrats!"
"It's about time," Luka added.
"Felix," Marinette shifted her eyes to her brother-in-law as she pouted, "Are you crying?" Looking at him trying to hold back his tears made her want to cry too.
He sniffled and came up to the both of them, bringing them into his arms, "I'm just- I'm so happy."
Half an hour later, after they finally got Felix, and then subsequently Marinette, to stop crying. After they had a large group hug and everyone kept on offering their congratulations for the happy news, it was finally time.
Suddenly, the lights were going out one by one. The bustling stopped. The group came to a standstill as well. Felix and Kagami held hands. Nino picked Rania up, holding her close to him whilst Alya placed her arm around her husband's waist. Luka and Alix stood side by side, their arms linked again and everyone watched and waited for the last of the lights to be turned off so the only light that could be seen was the shining moon and the glittering stars. Adrien smiled as he held Marinette and stared at the moon, the same moon which had guided him since he was born. The one thing which had watched over him from the beginning of his time to now.
It looked back at him and shone brighter.
The final light turned off and silence followed. The people waited with bated breath as they admired the dark sky which was once so feared by some. Yet under it, they were all now united, standing together.
Adrien let go of Marinette and she stepped forward, using her heel to prep her for a jump. She launched herself into the air and soon she was high up in the sky, her arms wide out and her eyes closed.
She took a deep breath.
And then, there was light.
-End of Part III-
............
The end.
Well, for the most part. But here we are. No more sadness. No more angst. Just happiness. Alya and Nino had a child. Marinette and Adrien are having one. Something is happening with Luka and Alix but even I don't know what. And Felix and Kagami are the same as always- though Felix has become a little more emotional and sentimental. I love him lol.
And actually, I think this did become the longest chapter.
Now we just have the epilogue and the A/N and then part 4 won't be too long. Just a few extras. I will talk more in the A/n.
Let's go to the epilogue, shall we?
See you in a bit Lovelies <3
