Chapter 1

"The female tracts include fallopian tubes, uterus and a vagina. And the male tracts include-"

Muffled giggles rose in the class.

" Uhrmm", assistant professor, Manoj cleared his throat as he continued with the class.

"Millions of sperm enters the vagina, but only one fuse with the ovule-"

"Yeah, men always have these competitional issues. Be it impressing a girl or getting her pregnant", someone yelled, and fits of laughter erupted in the class and, Aadhira bit her inner cheeks, stifling the laughter.

Cursing his fate, Manoj took the pointer to explain the diagrams presented on the board.

"Sir, what is that?" a student asked, pointing at a diagram in which the process of an erected penis enters the vagina.

'Human Reproduction system', the only time students are curious, and the teachers show no involvement.

Sweat beads rolled down his forehead as his body turned warm in embarrassment. Wiping them with his palm, he fisted the pointer in his hand, wondering what he should do.

'Tringggggg', the bell rang, indicating the end of the hour.

"Aandava, Thank you", Manoj hurried out of the class, tossing the notes into his bag.

"Such a poor soul", Aadhira giggled, packing her stuff.

The golden rays of the sun tore open the dull clouds, colouring them in the shades of bright yellow and mild-orange. The gentle breeze blew across, wakening the young residents of the peepal tree.

"Thendral vanthu ennai thodum", the romantic number played at a distance, makes the atmosphere romantic for Aadhira. She sat on the bench under the peepal tree of her college campus. Under the shady tree, the fog in her mind cleared, and she closed her eyes, inhaling the humid air.

"Move your ass off there, already", Shilpi pulled her, irritated. Aadhira rolled her eyes, swatting her hands away. Shilpi sat near, scrunching her nose at the dried droppings all over the place.

"The intricacies of nature are found in abundance around you. Each carries millions of secrets and mysteries, weaved together with magnificent beauty. Listen to the trees around. They sing the hymns of the hidden realms. Learn to untangle them, one by one, and you will find a beautiful reality hidden in it", Aadhira leaned to the trunk of the peepal tree, looking at the fresh blossoms. The young residents of the tree chirped happily, spreading their wings as the cold wind made their little bodies shudder.

"If you are done, let's leave. This place is nasty", Shilpi shook her head in disgust. Laughing at her friend, Aadhira rested her head on the trunk, listening to the orchestra played by the cuckoo residing on the peepal tree.

Shilpi nudged her, "Let's leave", she pleaded and let out a sigh in relief as Aadhira stood up to leave.

"Screw the traffic", Aadhira muttered, irritated at the heavy traffic. People clung to each other at the sudden movement of the bus. Aadhira groaned as the sweaty scent of people hit her nostrils.

'Why the hell is it crowded all day?'

Anger flared up her nostrils when she heard a woman behind her say, "Why do these people carry the bags behind their shoulders? It is suffocating"

She glanced at the lady who carried two jute bags and one placed on her leg. Clutching the handle above, she pushed the bag off her leg and muttered a 'sorry' when the lady yelled.

'Now, that's very comfortable.'

Travelling in public transport at peak hours is everything but comfort and peace. Pushing the people ahead, she jumped off the bus with Shilpi behind as it halted at their bus stop.

"Why would you do that?" Shilpi glared at her.

"She is so noisy", Aadhira scoffed, shrugging her shoulders.

They headed to the library and took their usual seats in the 'Biology' section. Unclasping the documents of their thesis paper, they resumed their work. Aadhira sat near the window, playing with the droplets clinging on the railings of the window as it started to drizzle.

"Take your hands off it, Aadhira. It's dirty", Shilpi swatted her hand away, irritated.

"You're such a spoilsport", she scoffed, shrugging off Shilpi's hands and resumed playing. Sighing at the nuisance of her friend, Shilpi moved to the adjacent bench, muttering, "Such a pain in my ass."

The wet air flowed through the windows as she deterred the pages from turning. The pleasant petrichor made her heart gleam in joy as she drew a deep breath.

'Life without these magics is not pleasant.'

Her lips curled into a smile as the birds took shelter near the windowpane, wiggling their little tail draining water from their fragile bodies.

Aadhira felt a scrutinizing gaze on her from the other end of the library. She lifted her eyes with a knowing look as a faint blush appeared on her cheeks. As her pair of eyes caught the other, she narrowed hers, and the other snapped away from her. She bit her lips, killing the giggles in her throat.

She felt a little prick on her shoulder. As she found what it was, her eyes darted out of the window. Unable to find anything, she looked at the four-leaved clover in her hand.

'When will I get to see you, my little friend?' she stared at the sky as the flock of birds travelled towards their nests.
