chapter 40

Late that very same evening, Gwen and Trinity were  working on their spell books before bed. Gwen looked up from her book of shadows to see what Trinity was working on. Trinity had a look of shock, as if she had seen a poltergeist or seriously harmful creature of darkness. It had taken Gwen nearly fifteen minutes to get a response from her. It had frightened her more than anything else. Even though it was only minutes that she couldn't get a response from her new friend, it felt like an eternity. Trinity was just frozen, as if her mind was lost. Gwen was filled with a sense of dread, something she was not used to. For the first time in her life Gwen didn't know how to help, she couldn't just fix it. Gwen had become panic stricken with worry; she was starting to think this would be permanent. She had a look of terror on her normally happy face when Trinity just seemed to snap out of it, whatever it was.

"Gwen are you okay, you look as if you've had a nervous breakdown?"

"What's a nervous breakdown?"

"Oh never mind It's not important right now, what is important is what happened to you?"

"I'm not exactly sure. It was like I went somewhere else but I never left the room."

"Do you mean like shamanic travel?" Gwen asked a little confused.

"What is that?" Trinity asked unsure if they were talking about the same thing or not.

"It's like magic visions."

"I think that might be what happened." Trinity replied, in an almost comatose state of being.

"Well what did you see? Tell me everything, in as much detail as you can remember."

Taking a long deep breath, she nodded before telling Gwen all that she could.

"I saw the dark sorceress trapped by fallen rocks behind a waterfall."

"Did you see anything else?"

"I think there was a mountain, and it was during the night, outside." Trinity fell silent for a moment, trying to remember if there was anything else to her magic vision.

"I think that's all I can remember, I'm sorry."

"No don't be sorry, that is an incredible gift. You see truth, not easy for many witches."

"Are you serious?" Trinity asked as her eyes lit up with excitement.

"I get visions in dreams only but never when I'm awake."

"Oh wow that must be something."

"The real question is why you had a vision like that, is it a symbolic of some deeper meaning?" Gwen asked out loud, hoping to figure it out.

"Hey Gwen, what if it was like a cry for help, what if she's really in danger?" Trinity pointed out with a little fear in her trailing voice.

"If Veronica is in trouble she wouldn't want our help, trust me." Gwen glared at Trinity who knew she was probably right.

"Wouldn't you feel horrible if something really did happen to her and we could have helped?" Trinity asked glaring right back at Gwen.

Gwen just shook her head. She knew where this was going, and she didn't like it one bit. She really did not want to go on this really screwed up rescue mission of the spoiled sorceress. She just grabbed her knap sack and began to fill it with a few necessities.

"Get ready, we're going to have to make sure. We need to sneak out of the house." Gwen instructed her friend.

Trinity nodded and just followed her lead, packing up supplies in her book bag and sneaking out of the cottage behind her new best friend. The two of them walked down the steep hill until they made it to the square in the dead of night. Seeing the village so quiet, completely still was a strange sight for Gwen. It was a good type of quiet, serene and soothing. Gwen and Trinity walked on through the forest, it was a little creepy for them. They were not used to the night, the tree branches rustling in the breeze, strange noises coming from the back trails of the forest. Trinity began to shudder in fear

. She wasn't used to the dark feel of the magic forest at night. Gwen on the other hand was like a warrior, she wanted to get this rescue adventure over with as soon as possible. She knew this was going to end in disaster. She just wanted to get the entire thing over with. The sooner the two of them got to the mountains, the sooner they could go back home. Gwen couldn't understand it, if she were helping anyone else except Veronica she would do her best to hurry up and care about the person in danger.

The last thing she wanted to do is help the most immature and rude witch in all of the worlds. She didn't want to be there, she knew it was a pointless mission. However she refused to let Trinity go alone through these woods in the middle of the night. If something were to happen to her new friend, it would be devastating.

After a good hour of carefully making it through the forest in the middle of the night, Trinity could barely make out the silhouette of the mountain. She listened, hearing the faint sound of the waterfall far off in the distance. She knew it would not be much longer now. Her legs were aching from all of the walking since she arrived in this realm. She loved living there, and had been adjusting quite well for the last couple of weeks. She loved the area and the people of Galderia. It was home.

"It looks like we're almost there; I can see the mountain, just barely over there." Trinity explained, pointing to the east.

"Good, I'm really getting spooked out here." Gwen admitted, slightly embarrassed by her childish fears.

"You aren't the only one; this place is so creepy in the night." Trinity remarked, agreeing with her.

The two of them continued on through the thick dark forest until they finally found the mountain trail. The two climbed it until they reached the caves behind the colossal sized waterfall. On instinct alone Trinity began pulling rocks away from a cave to the left side of her, Gwen began helping her clear the fallen rocks blocking the cave. She hoped Trinity knew what the heck she was doing. After a half an hour of clearing the rubble, there was Veronica. The dark sorceress really had been trapped, and the vision Trinity had been the truth. Gwen couldn't believe it with her own eyes.

"Veronica, are you hurt?" Trinity asked hoping the sorceress was okay.

"I don't believe so." She replied, a little surprised to see Gwen's little side kick helping her out of the cave. She rolled her eyes when she saw Gwen had been there as well.

Once they were out of the caves, Veronica just looked at the two of them for a long while before she finally spoke to them.

"Thank you for saving my life, I am forever in your debt and I hate you for it." She then turned and walked off from the other two.

"Wait a minute; is that what you call a thank you? What the heck were you doing climbing a mountain in the middle of the night?" Gwen demanded glaring at the dark sorceress.

"Who are you, my mother?" Veronica snapped back.

"No just someone dumb enough to care." Gwen shot right back, glaring at her.

Trinity panicked, she feared where this little tiff would lead to. Without even meaning to, her protective magic took over. All of the sudden she had placed a magical protective circle over each of them. The other two turned to look at Trinity, both were very confused.

"Why did you do that to us?" Gwen asked changing her tone completely.

"I needed to protect the both of you from each other."

"The prophecy has come true." Veronica spoke as if she were in some kind of trance.

"What are you talking about? What prophecy?" Gwen asked, curious to find out.

Veronica gave her a dirty look before she told them what little she had heard about it.

"The way I understand it, the prophecy states there will be a sorceress of balance between the light and dark witches, one who is sort of a peace keeper between good and evil."

"You think that is Trinity?" Gwen asked, feeling that she missed something.

"The prophecy also said it would be an outsider." Veronica explained with what patience she had left for when it came to the light witch.

"I see what you mean." Gwen commented. That was when Trinity released them from their magic circle of protection. Veronica nodded to them before heading back to her castle as fast as she possibly could go. Gwen watched the dark sorceress run off through the forest. Gwen shrugged her shoulders and turned to her best friend.

"If I live to be a thousand years old, I still don't think I'd ever understand her." Gwen admitted to her best friend.

Trinity laughed at the joke. "Come on let's get back home and out of this place, it's a long walk back."

"Definitely, I'm ready to get out of here." Gwen admitted to her friend.

The two of them climbed slowly back down the steep mountain until  the bottom. The two rested only a few minutes before heading back through the forest. It was a little faster heading home this time. It didn't seem near as frightening on the way back. It didn't take them half as long to get to the village. When the two of them reached the square the two sat together and looked at what stars were in the sky on that strange evening. It had been a rather interesting turn of events that night. Events that Gwen hoped would not be happening again anytime soon. The two sat there looking at the stars for a few more minutes.

"We have got to get going, I'm sure it is well past two in the morning by now." Gwen commented.

"I think you're right about that." Trinity added with a soft smile. She was ready to get back just as much as her friend.

By the time the two witches had made it through the village and back up the steep hill to their cottage, it was  past two in the morning. Lucky for them neither of Gwen's parents had waked in the night. Gwen and her new friend crept back to their shared room and got settled, both of them were exhausted from walking that far and for that long. It didn't take long for either of them to give in to the comforts of sleep.
