chapter 36

amulet

Once she left the dense forest, she headed straight for the castle to her chamber tower. Veronica breathed a sigh of relief; she was back in the comfort of her sanctuary. She settled on her huge fluffy bed, and found herself focused on the amulet. The events of the evening came flooding back to her, of Ludwig's warning to get rid of the talisman. It was just a piece of jewelry, nothing more. It made her curious as to why this little jewel had made Ludwig so nervous. She instinctively grabbed her spell book and began to leaf through it.

Veronica had a feeling that maybe she would be able to figure it out with a bit of magical help. She flipped through the standard sections of spells, potions and herbs. Then she found a section that looked promising. She found a few interesting second sight incantations, a couple of dream magic meditations and an underworld retrieving chant. Her eyes sparkled at the thought of retrieving someone from the underworld. It just sounded like an idea she may use in the near future. The trouble was she didn't write it in her book, someone else did. She had no clue as to who could have written it. There were no others that magically inclined who would have access to her chamber.

She needed to concentrate on the spell she needed to find, the pull to discovering the secret behind the amulet was too strong. She didn't just need to know, it was like a deep rooted driving force to find out the truth.

After searching through half the book she found one that looked like it would be of use with this. It was an object charm, to find out what it had been used for. According to the notes the spell would inspire a vision of the said talisman. She read the entire thing until it was memorized. She mentally prepared herself, draining her thoughts from her mind. She altered her awareness and began to cast the spell, hoping to find out why the amulet had made her gargoyle so spooked. Kneeling in front of her altar with proper candles in place, Veronica began to raise her dark energy. Waiting only momentarily, she began the chant with talisman in her receiving hand.

"Dark creatures of second sight show me the unseen properties of this device.

As it is spoken, it shall be true.

I shall find what this amulet can do."

Veronica instantly felt a surge of empowerment like she had never felt before in her entire young life. It startled her, but sparked her over curious nature at the same instant. She felt a spark of energy that made her feel like she could conquer the world. She began to giggle and Dance in her room, before finally settling down with her book of shadows. She left the candles burning for ambiance. It seemed to help, she began to write about Ludwig, and the spell she had just cast into the universe. Then, just to make a note of it she wrote down the names of the spells she found that she didn't write. It might make sense to her later on.

Wondering to herself when the visions would take place, she stared outside through the window watching the moon. She loved the powerful lunar glow, especially after the witching hour. It seemed to boost her magical abilities. It was the nocturnal pull, the night essence that seemed to make her body and mind fill with magical potential. Even though veronica was beginning to study high magic, a more advanced skill requirement, she couldn't explain what was going on. She had assumed all of these unexplainable events would lead up to something, but what? She quickly added that to her dark book of secrets, she had a feeling this would be the start of something very difficult. Are these the premonitions? She shook her head; Veronica knew that she was thinking too much again. It gave her enchanted headaches, like migraines in the human realm.

It had not happened for months now, but she knew the best thing was for her to do a dream chant before going to sleep. The visions could be better received during that state of awareness. It was easier for the dark ones to communicate during a person's sleep state. She got up to extinguish the three black candles burning on her altar. She added a few impressions she felt about the amulet before putting her spell book away for the night. Rolling over into a comfortable position, she drifted into dream land as soon as her head was nestled on her burgundy pillow. When sleep had truly taken over, the premonitions began to invade her thoughts.

Walking through the forest, yet it wasn't the one she knew, it was the same but it didn't feel the same to her. She wasn't sure what to expect. She wandered through the thick dark wooded area, then she noticed a fog begin to seep in. it had covered her feet up to her shins. It was a purple- silver mist, one like she had never seen before. As she walked further on she saw someone else in the woods. She called to the stranger, who turned to look at Veronica.

"Hello, who are you?"

She asked the strange older woman in a shimmering silver ritual robe, it was tied with a black velvet belt with little silver stars on a chain. It was surreal to her. The woman had to be in her sixties, with salt and pepper hair down to her waist. Her eyes were dark blue; you could almost see the elder was of magical blood.

"You confuse thy enemies with thy friend's young one."

The woman spoke clear and direct before dissipating into the purple-silver mist. Veronica tried to chase her in the dream, causing her to fall out of the bed and return to waking consciousness.

"Damn it!"

She barked in a sharp yell. Before she lost the memory of the dream, Veronica lunged for her spell book, racing to the section on dreams to write the scene down before the dream details faded from her completely. As soon as it was finished she hurried herself back to bed, hoping that wasn't the only vision the spell had to give her. It didn't make any sense. Crawling back into bed, the dark witch hoped for a little more information from the dark ones. Soon after settling herself once more sleep had returned.

As the dream state had taken over once more, a vision had appeared to her. She was in the village, she saw Terrance circling over the town square. She looked at the crowded village, she recognized only one person, it was the twit from the forest. Veronica wanted nothing more to do with the vision, but she watched. She then saw the other witch with her. Suddenly she heard a voice.

"You confuse thy enemies with thy friends."

A thought hit her like a tree trunk in a thunder storm. She started scanning the area for the gargoyle, and didn't see him. It meant the premonition was not about Ludwig, he wasn't part of this confusion or vision. That eased some of her worry. She saw it all start to fade away again. She jolted awake from the extremely vivid dream. Once both of her eyes were open and in focus, she grabbed her book and went back to the dream section again. When she had wrote the entire thing out she scratched her head in bewilderment.

"What does it have to do with the amulet?" Veronica asked her empty chamber room.

A couple possibilities struck her so she wrote them down.

The amulet binds or may even blind the truth?

It could be an object that takes possession of it's owner?

Is it cursed in some way?

She closed the book and set it under her pillow. She looked outside her small window. By the sun's middle of the sky position, it was nearly time for her to wake up. She rang the bell for Gina, her competent servant. She needed some strong Witches Brew today. She had to think about this and she had a lesson with Triadia in a few hours. She may know a little something about this talisman issue. There was a knock at the door intruding on her thoughts.

"Miss, it's Gina."

"Oh, yes come in."

The door swung open with a gentle push.

"That was quick, I'd like the strongest Witches Brew we have. It's going to be a long day for me, I can feel it."

Gina nodded and headed down stairs to full fill the request.
