Chapter 5- Ditch the Party for a Movie
"So what do you hate?" Kayden asks when he stops us in front of a door. This wouldn't be the first one we passed, and I'm sure it won't be the last because Lianne's house is huge. Compared to her house, my house seems like a small building, and I'm glad that I don't seem like a rich kid.
"Um, why?" I question, raising a brow.
"Stop being so stubborn and answer."
I frown at his sudden rudeness. "Excuse me?"
He lets out an annoyed groan. "Just what do you hate?" I think about arguing with him further but decide not to when he gives me a glare.
"Okay, okay." I say holding up my hands in mock surrender. I stand there pondering this before saying, "Army related stuff."
He looks at me confused. "Why?"
I shrug. "I just think it's dumb. But if your dream is to become a marine of some sort then sorry."
I know he wants to know why but he doesn't press. "Great," he says with a smile.
He looks around the hallway to see if anyone's there, but when he sees no one, he pushes open the doors and pulls me in, locking the door.
I jump back and glance at him surprised. At least, I think it's him. The room we've entered is so dark that I can't even see my own two feet. "What are you doing?"
"Stay put," his says sounding far away.
Instead of staying put, I move forward and stub my toe on something hard. "Ow!" I shout, reaching for my foot but end up falling backwards onto something that catches me.
Just then the lights flicker on, getting brighter and brighter each second. "Got it!" Kayden says.
I glance down to what I fell on and see a plush red velvet seat. I push myself up into the seat and grip the arm rests. I look down and around myself to see four rows of identical seats. As predicted, a huge screen in the middle of tge room was attached to the wall.
"You couldn't stay put when I asked?" Kayden says in front of the screen.
"Why are we in a movie theater room?" I ask ignoring his question. I ease back into my comfy chair, letting out a sigh of relief.
"Because you said you're not in the mood for a party and neither do I, so movies it is." He gets the screen to play the opening scene as the lights slowly dim once more. I feel him sit next to me, his arm brushing against mine.
"What are we watching?" I whisper even though it's just us in the room.
He puts a finger to his lip and hushes me. "Quiet. You'll see."
I grunt but stay quiet. As the movie progresses, I learn the title of the movie is MAX and surprisingly, it's a cute movie. At the end of it, I have newly found respect for marines and so forth and I know Kayden knows this because he's smiling smugly.
"Oh shut it," I say with a laugh."But i definitely like that movie."
He smiles and stands up, reaching out a hand to me. "Come on, let's go."
"Where?" I ask raising a brow.
"Out to the party. I'm now in the mood and it's about 10 right now." He looks at me expectantly like I should know something about the current time. I give him a look, shaking my head and raise my hands as if asking 'what?' He sighs. "That's when people are all most likely drunk and doing crazy stuff. Now come on."
This time he doesn't wait for a response and reaches for my hand and pulls me up. We exit the room and tread downstairs where the party is possibly close to it's highest peak. People are playing pool, watching intently to see who'd win and lose. In between this, girls are grinding on the two competitors bodies.
We veer outside to where things are pretty hyped. At the bar people are playing beer pong, multiple glasses sitting next to each person. On the grass people are dancing to the music being blasted from the speakers.
Kayden's face lights up and I can't tell if it's from the fairy lights or from the whole scene. He's about to spin me onto the floor with the others when I back away. "What's wrong?" He asks.
"Nothing. I'm going to find my sister and brother--make sure they're okay," I say quickly then disappear into the crowd.
I found Kiana by the pool sitting on the guy's lap on a lounge chair by the pool, indulged in a deep make out. I flee and look for Norven. i'm only making sure they're safe and not totally wasted, but knowing Norven he probably will only be slightly drunk and with multiple girls.
I don't have to walk far to find him, though. He's in the Jacuzzi wearing only his boxers with his arm slung around Lianne and some other girl's, but they're not the only ones' in it. Four other girls are soaking in there with their own bikinis staring dreamily at my brother.
"Oh my gosh, Norven," I say slapping his shoulder lightly.
He looks up at me smiling. "What's up, sis?"
"Who is she?" One of the girl's sneer.
"His sister." I say with an eye roll. "He kind of just said that."
"Hey easy," Norven says, "so what's up?"
I shake my head. "Nothing, just checking up on you and Kay, but I'm positive you're fine."
He laughs and I smile. "All good here." He turns back to his party but then twists back to me. "Wait who are you with?"
I shrug, swatting my hand to the side as if i was trying to kill a fly. "Just one of the neighbor's."
His face grows suspicious but his words sound nothing of it. "Alright. If you're with Kayden be careful. I've heard he's a player."
I roll my eyes. "Then you two would be great friends." I spin around to leave.
"Hey!" Norven shouts.
I smile and keep walking, not seeing the person turning in front of me until a cool liquid touches my skin at the bottom of my crop top. It's smells bad in my nose and I realize it's beer. No way is this coming off.
"I'm so sorry, I--" A familiar voice says, lunging for napkins to help clean the beer off me. He keeps muttering apologies as he hands me napkins, not looking at me at all.
"Jeremy," I say calmly but he doesn't hear me. "Jeremy!" I shout causing him to look up.
"Oh, Nova," he lets out a sigh of relief, "I'm sorry. I'm such a klutz. I wasn't even looking."
I hold up my hand for him to stop. "I swear it's fine don't worry about it." I take the napkin and start drying off the liquid falling down my leg. "What are you doing here?" I ask him.
"You mean the party?" Jeremy asks. I nod. "Everyone is invited to Lianne's big party. The whole school is here."
"Oh. Well in that case, who are you with?"
He looks around nervously and whispers something but I can't hear it over the music.
"What?" I ask loudly.
"Friends," he answers just as loud.
"No girlfriend?" He gives me a crooked smile and shakes his head. "Really?"
He raising his right hand and says, "I swear I have no girlfriend."
I raise my brows in surprise. "Wow I thought you did because your brother--"
He cuts me off, his smile fading. "You mean Kayden?" I nod sheepishly. "We're nothing alike," he spats.
"Oh, sorry--" I say but he interrupts me.
"Wait," he says holding out his hands. "Were you going to him just now?" He doesn't wait for me to answer, "not you too," he mumbles to himself.
"What?" I ask. What does he mean 'not you too?'
"He's not someone you want to get with, Nova. He uses girls," Jeremy says, angrily.
"I don't know, he seems sweet." I whisper honestly.
Jeremy rolls his eyes. "Yeah, whatever." He pushes past me and leaves.
I sigh in frustration. Why was Jeremy so mad at me? We barely know each other, he has no right to accuse my opinions on his brother. I feel eyes watching me and look up to see Kayden staring at me from across the sea of dancing bodies.
