Part 12: The Simple Days
~Two Months Later~
Peeta's P.O.V.
Katniss would never agree with me, but she is an amazing mother. She thinks I'm the better parent out of the two of us. But somehow, I just know that's not entirely true. Whenever she is with our daughter, I see a whole different side of her. It's somewhat familiar because she cared for Prim in a similar way. But in her attitude, I can also sense something completely new. Something softer. Something.. Beautiful. I caught her one afternoon, in a daze as she watched Aster pick dandelions in the meadow. Nothing could distract her, not even my heavy footsteps coming from behind her. She was startled at first as I placed my hand on her shoulder. But soon relaxed and gave me a quick smile.
"I love her so much, Peeta." She said with a tone that was nearly desperate.
"I know you do, Katniss." I said to her and gave her shoulder what I hoped was a reassuring rub.
She took a long pause before saying anything else. I could tell she was pondering something.
"Do you think she'll ever love me as much as I love her?" She asked.
Almost as if on cue, I see our girl run up to meet us. Katniss bent down to catch her in her arms, as she did I noticed a flower in Aster's hand. It wasn't a dandelion. Like the ones I watched her pick. But a,
"It's a Primrose, Mommy! For you!" Aster stated proudly.
I could see the tears welling in Katniss's eyes as she smiled. "Thank you, sweetheart. What is this for?" She asked her happily as she took the Primrose from Aster's hand.
"Because I love you." And with that, she wrapped her arms around her mother's neck. Embracing her with all her might.
As she did, I took the opportunity to whisper in Katniss's ear,
"I think she already does."
I love to dream about this afternoon. I feel relieved when I get it instead of a nightmare. I feel small fingers poking my back.
"Daddy. Pst! Daddy, wake up." I hear Aster whisper.
I roll over and sit up. "Yeah, Ast?" I ask and yawn.
"Can we go play today?" She asks quietly.
I look at the clock. "Yes we can, Aster. Maybe in a little bit. Mommy is still asleep." I say.
"Okay." She says and has her cute sad look.
"We'll go make breakfast. How about pancakes?" I ask and rub her chin.
A big, bright smile appears on her face. "Yay!" She says,
"Will you go get the things out for me?" I ask.
She nods. "And keep quiet. It's a little bit early for Mommy to be up." I say softly and kiss her head.
"I will." She whispers and puts her little fingers in front of her lips, and has a smile.
She runs out of our room and I hear her small feet go down the stairs. Not too far behind the paws and claws of Daisy and Apollo follow. I look over and find Katniss still asleep peacefully. I brush some of her long dark hair out of her face. I lean down and kiss her forehead. I see her smile in her sleep. She breathes deeper and curls up into the pillow.
I get out of bed and get dressed. I leave my room and close the door quietly. I go downstairs. When I go into the kitchen, the sight of my little girl at the sink warms my heart.
"What are you doing Little Flower?" I ask her.
"Meshuring, Daddy!" She says,
I laugh a little. I go and get the cup from her.
"Can you get the flour and eggs?" I ask.
"Uhhu!" She says with a smile.
I go to the cupboard and get out the sugar, baking powder, sugar, vegetable oil and salt. I get the bowl that Aster got out and mix the dry ingredients.
"Here you go, Daddy!" Aster says and puts the flour on the island. She gets on her step stool.
"Thank you, Flower. Want to stir them around?" I ask.
"Yep!" She says,
I hand her the whisk and she stirs. I spay a pan and turn on the stove.
"All done!" Aster beams.
"Thank you, Flower. I'll take that." I say.
I pour the batter on the stove. I cook the pancakes and hold Aster's hand when she wants to flip them.
"Will you wash some fruit, Flower?" I ask her.
"Sure Daddy!" She says,
I set some batter in a smaller pour on the pan. I put them on a plate for Aster. I get out the chocolate spread.
"Here's the fraoot, Daddy!" She says and hands me the bowl.
"Thank you." I say.
I set the fruit in the spot for Aster.
"What's that, Daddy?" She asks.
"You tell me." I say and set the plate in her seat with a smile.
"It's a bear! Thank you Daddy! I don't want to eat it." She says,
"Well if you don't, then Mommy or I will." I say and move my fork over to her plate.
"No!" She cries and pushes my hand away.
"Okay, I won't. I promise." I say and laugh a little.
"Good! It's my bear!" She says and gives me a face.
"But what if I want the bear?" I hear Katniss ask.
I look up and see her in the kitchen doorway. I smile at her.
"Not this one, Mommy! Get your own!" Aster says and starts to eat, so we won't take hers.
Katniss and I laugh a little. She comes over and helps me finish cooking. She kisses my cheek.
"Morning, you." She says softly.
"Morning." I say.
She wraps her arms around me and rests her head on my shoulder.
"Sleep well?" I ask.
"Sorta." She says,
"Nightmare?" I ask.
"No. I wasn't feeling good when I woke up." She says,
"Hmm. I'm sorry." I say.
"It's alright. It went away." She says,
"Maybe see your mother if it returns." I suggest.
"I will." she says.
She grabs a plate and gets her breakfast. I join my girls when I finish cleaning up. We enjoy our Saturday morning together as a family.
"Do you want to help me in the garden today, Aster?" Katniss asks her.
"Sure Mommy! Only if Daddy will help too!" She says,
"I will. Since I don't work today." I say.
"Go put your plate in the sink and then go get dressed. Alright, Flower?" Katniss says.
"Okay Mommy!" She says,
She clears her plate and runs up to her room.
"Peeta, I have to tell you something." Katniss says sounding sort of serious.
"Okay.. Is everything alright?" I ask.
She smiles and nods. She reaches into her pocket and pulls something out. She slips to me. "You're going to be a daddy again, Peeta." She says.
I am in shock. The test is positive. "We-We- We're going to be parents again... Real Or Not Real?" I ask.
A big smile spreads on her face and a few tears fall. "Real." She says.
"This.. is amazing. Aster will have a little brother or sister." I say.
"She'll be excited. When do we tell her?" She says.
"We better tell her first. Before the world finds out again." I say.
She laughs a little. "Maybe we tell her in a special way. But with everyone else too. Not the world." she says.
"So.. you mean don't tell Effie." I say.
She rolls her eyes. "We can tell her too. Just keep her in 12 for the next nine months so she can't tell anyone." She jokes.
"Do you know how long you are yet?" I ask.
"Just a month. I hope that no one can tell yet." She says.
I look her over. "I can't yet. So, we're good." I say with a smile.
She smiles too. We hear the feet and paws racing down the stairs. Then our wild bunch enters the kitchen.
"I'm ready Mommy!" Aster says.
"I see you are." She says and sets her on her lap.
Katniss stands up and carries Aster to the backyard. I get my shoes and Katniss's boots. We spend our simple day doing simple things. Enjoying time with the people who love me most.
