10. "The Things I Do For You, Steve Rogers."
Steve found Sharon once we got to the hotel. I went to go find Sam to allow the two of them to have their time to talk. I was sure Steve had some questions to ask her.
"How's he holding up?" Sam asked once I found him.
"He's managing," I said. "He's taking it real hard."
"I'm sure."
"Thank you for going with us, I'm sure it means a lot to him."
"Glad to be here for some moral support."
I smiled. "You're a good person, Sam Wilson."
Sam's face dropped, and I looked where his eyes did. My stomach tightened.
Someone had detonated a bomb at the UN building in Vienna.
Natasha's there. Oh no. The live footage on the TV made me want to get sick.
"Get Steve," I gasped to Sam.
"I'll be right back." He touched my shoulder briefly before dashing off.
The damage brought me back to the damage Wanda and I had unintentionally done in Lagos. Only what we had done wasn't on purpose. This...someone was not happy about these Accords.
The more the news broadcasted breaking details, the more I felt sick to my stomach.
"Kiara!"
I paled as I turned; Sam had retrieved Steve and Sharon. She was on the phone.
"A bomb hidden in a news van ripped through the UN building in Vienna," the TV anchor rattled off. "More than seventy people have been injured. At least twelve are dead, including Wakanda's King T'Chaka. Officials have released a video of a suspect who they have identified as James Buchanan Barnes, the Winter Soldier—the infamous Hydra agent, linked to numerous acts of terrorism and political assassinations."
Steve and I looked at each other. Unless Hydra got their hands on Bucky, there was no way...there was no way that he would've done this. What reason would he have unless his handlers got a hold of him again?
"I have to go to work," said Sharon before leaving.
"I guess that means we need to as well," I said aloud. We had been trying to find Bucky ever since the fallout at S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ. He'd saved Steve's life after he had nearly beaten the crap out of him under Hydra's brainwashing. Steve had wanted to find him ever since, Sam had even enlisted himself to help find Steve's lost friend.
Now, here he was, under a very harsh spotlight.
Something doesn't feel right. If he wanted to go into hiding...
The last look I had seen in Bucky's eyes was not one of future murder sprees or terroristic acts of violence. Then again, we had no sightings of him until now. There was all that time unaccounted for, events that we may not know about that may be behind this.
* * *
It was almost as though Peggy's funeral took place days ago when in fact it was only hours.
Sam, Steve, and I travelled to Vienna. Sam opted to hang around near a coffee shop, I went with Steve to get a closer look at the scene.
Currently, fire crews were hosing down the building. I thought about helping out by pulling the fire out, but in fear of causing more panic, I decided to let them be. A red and white chopper flew overhead. This was far worse than Lagos.
Steve and I kept a distance from the scene, him in his classic cap and dark glasses disguise. I recognized a red mane of hair—Natasha was alive. Some silver lining in this mess, I supposed. Steve phoned her while I kept a lookout just in case anyone happened to want to, I don't know, arrest us or something.
"Are you saying you'll arrest me?" I heard Steve ask. I kept my ears locked on the conversation. "If he's this far gone, Nat, I should be the one to bring him in. Because I'm the one least likely to die trying."
"So, that sounded like it went badly," I noted as he hung up. "She tell you to back off and let the 'authorities' handle this?"
"More or less."
"You're not gonna do that, are you?"
"Do you need to even ask?"
"Do you really think you've got a chance at getting to Bucky before police do?"
"With some help, yeah, I do."
I breathed through my nose. "The things I do for you, Steve Rogers."
"If it were Todd or Aria who was doing this, wouldn't you want to get to them first?"
I rolled my tongue over my lips. He wasn't wrong.
We went back to the coffee shop to find Sam. We approached him at a counter.
"She tell you to stay out of it?" asked Sam. He decided to mimic Steve in his disguise. "Might have a point."
"He'd do it for me."
"Nineteen forty-five, maybe. I just want to make sure we considered all our options. The people that shoot at you usually wind up shooting at me."
Sharon arrived at Steve's other side. "Tips have been pouring in since that footage went public. Everybody thinks the Winter Soldier goes to their gym. Most of it's noise. Except for this." She slid Steve a file. "My boss expects a briefing, pretty much now...so that's all the head start you're gonna get."
"Thank you."
"And you're gonna have to hurry. We have orders to shoot on sight."
I knew for a fact super soldiers were not immune to bullets—Steve had proven that went we took down Hydra at S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ. Bucky had been the one firing the bullets at him.
If anyone got to him before us, they only had one way out for him: in a body bag.
