Anywho that's how I stumbled upon this fic. It was originally posted on fanfiction.net, but I read it on AO3.

This is hands down one of my favorite Muse fanfics. You don't need to be a fan of the band, as it's an AU. However, the concept of the work is loosely based on their songs. The lead singer is a huge conspiracy theorist, and a lot of their songs have sci-fi themes, and I've noticed that many fanfics for Muse fall into sci-fi, including this one.

I really don't know how to explain the plot of this book, it's been a while since I've read it and it's very complex. I think the official summary is a good one, as it's hard to say much without giving it away. Basically, there's a strict set of rules in the town that he moves to, and the people who are natives are definitely a bit off. He meets Matt, who is part of this underground group called Resistance, and he finds himself getting in too deep time and time again with Matt and the Resistance. It's very dystopian-esque and is a FANTASTIC work. 

It didn't really make me cry, but it made me sit there and have an existential crisis at 2am as I lied in the darkness staring at my ceiling wondering why humans were put on Earth.

Also the Muse song of the same title is one of my FAVORITES by them, I've been listening to it non-stop recently, I think it might be my favorite song on that album! It's just so gahhhlfhalsh
