A long, spiky shriek echoes from down the school hallway and everyone turns to see what could possibly be happening, only to notice that Ron Stoppable is running away from one of the cheerleaders; her pom-pom in hand and ready to throw. He passes you by your locker, shouting, "Hey, (Y/n)!" before dashing down the stairs with the cheerleader hot on his heels.
For everyone else, their response is either to shake their head or ignore the commotion but you instead chuckle. Had it been any other week, you might have been worried for your best friend but knowing what is taking place this Friday night kept the humor alive. It was the week of the school dance and, by the looks of it, Ron was getting his third rejection.
When you make it downstairs, you just happen to see Ron getting hit by the cheerleader's pom-pom before she storms away. As you reach the last step, your best friend sees you and smiles awkwardly as he rubs the area he had just taken a beaten.
"I'm guessing that was a no?" You smile.
"You don't have to look so happy about it." Ron says, quickly checking his pockets to make sure that Rufus, his pet naked mole rat, was unharmed.
"I think I have every right to be. I was the one you were taking to the dance, remember?"
Ron lets out an awkward laugh that sounds between a groan and a wheeze. Placing your hand on his arm, you give him a soft, playful squeeze.
"It's fine, Ron. We already talked about this. You know I'm just messing with you."
"Yeah, right."
But to be completely honest, you had just lied to your best friend. It wasn't fine. Last year, after some convincing, Ron had taken you to the school dance and you had one of the best nights of your life. You and Ron had agreed that you would take each other to the dance the next year, which is now this Friday, but then a week before Ron had suddenly wanted to take someone else. And she definitely didn't want to go with him.
"You should really ask someone else, Ron." You say, walking with him to his next class.
"No way! She's just having fun with me, that's all. Right, Rufus?" Ron asks, and his pet naked mole rat salutes him, "She'll fall at my feet eventually. It's just a matter of time."
"Sure, Ron."
"What about you? I haven't heard you ask a single guy yet. Don't tell me that you're not going this year."
"No, I'm going. I'm just being selective."
"Oh, right."
"Serious! You never know, Ron. He might be right around the corner."
And just like that, as you turn the corner with your best friend you accidentally impact with another student. Whoever you just hit into was in a hurry, as the motion got you falling to the floor like a chopped tree.
"Woah, (Y/i)! You okay?" Ron asks.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't see you!" Says the person responsible for your aching butt.
When you look up, you are immediately frozen still. Those are the most mesmerizing eyes you have ever seen and they're looking directly at you. The owner, a boy student, crouches beside you while Ron crouches at your other side, but you probably wouldn't have noticed without him asking if you were okay.
"That's fine." You say to the student, "No harm, no foul."
"I really should have been looking where I was going. Really, I'm sorry."
He stretches his hand out to you and you're about ready for your Aladdin moment, but there's no magic carpet ride. Although, you could plead that it felt like you were flying through the air when he knocked into you. Despite the lack of magic, you take his hand and he helps you to stand on your feet.
"Thanks." You say sheepishly.
"All good." He chuckles, "You'd think I'd notice a girl as beautiful as you."
All that comes as a response from you is a high-pitched, bumpy laugh; like you were trying to sing while driving over rocky terrain. The bell cuts the moment in two and he says goodbye, walking around you as you watch him go.
"(Y/n)?" Ron asks, waving his hand in front of your face.
"Huh?" You jump, looking over at him, "Oh, sorry. Yeah. Anyway, I'm definitely going to the dance."
***
"Success!" You shout, running up behind Ron and jumping on his back.
In a frenzy of worry, he holds onto you so that the two of you don't topple onto the concrete ground.
"W-what?" Ron asks, trying to look over at you.
You hop off of him and then hold onto his shoulders, rocking him back and forth.
"He said yes!"
"Who said yes?"
"Wyatt!"
"Wyatt?"
"Yes, the guy who bumped into me yesterday, remember?"
"Oh, right... he said yes to what exactly?"
"Taking me to the dance, you melon."
You swear you felt the air shift. If you had been psychic, maybe you would have understood why you suddenly felt as if Ron had just collapsed within himself, but you can't read minds. Yet, you can read facial expressions and how Ron looks is not at all what you had hoped for.
"You're not happy for me?" You ask, lowering your hands.
"What? No! No, of course not! I'm happy!" Ron says.
Yet, it isn't convincing. You're not sure if you want to poke around, and find that you don't get the chance when the school bell rings.
"Well, I've got to get to class." You say, turning around.
"Yeah." Ron mumbles.
"Oh, and Ron?" You spin around to look at him, "Thanks. If it weren't for you outing on me this year, I may never have even met the guy."
***
Okay, yes. You definitely had meant your remark to Ron the other day as a bit spiteful. Alright, a lot spiteful but you had every right to be even just the littlest bit nasty. He had promised to take you to the dance this year and he had broken his promise. But even though on the day you felt good about it all, you are beginning to think it may have been too much.
YOU: Are we still going dress shopping 2day? I know u already have a tux but we said we'd go together so that we could be matching.
Text left on read. Fantastic.
YOU: I know we're going with other people but I'd really like 2 match still.
Read. No reply.
YOU: You're wearing blue, right?
RON: Yeah.
YOU: Oh, gr8! So meet me @ the bus stop?
RON: [thumbs up emoji]
Oh, no. You just got hit with the thumbs up emoji. This is bad. This is argumentatively even worse than being hit with a 'K'. But Ron is there waiting for you at the bus stop like he had intended. He doesn't exactly show a willing attitude and lets you talk the way to the shopping centre.
A bit further into shopping, though, Ron does start to act like himself again. He decided to buy a new bowtie so that it could match the dress you bought in its shade, which you told him he didn't have to do but what can you say; Ron Stoppable is a sweet guy.
The rest of the day was filled with ice cream and lame jokes, and making funny faces behind pedestrians in between shop stops. When it was late in the afternoon and you were thinking of heading home and having a movie marathon with Ron, he had gotten a text from Kim and had to shoot off.
YOU: Stay safe x
RON: Always.
***
It was the night of the dance and you were more than excited to be picked up by your extremely cute date. Ron was going past Kim's place first and then was going to meet you and Wyatt at your place. When your date had knocked on your door, you almost swooned at how good he looks. Apparently, you had the same effect on him.
"You look... breathtaking." Wyatt says.
You smile in acknowledgement and point to the corsage in his hands, "Is that for me?"
"Oh, um, yeah."
Wyatt lets out a breathy laugh and puts the corsage delicately around your wrist, then you slide your arm around his and say goodbye to your parents as you two walk out the front door. Down by the footpath come walking Ron and Kim and you smile brightly at them.
"Hey!" You wave.
"(Y/n), you look great!" Kim says, "You too, Wyatt. Very dashing."
"Thanks." Wyatt smiles.
"Ron?" You ask.
He hadn't said a word since you all met up and you were worried that he might be still holding a grudge against you, but the way he looks at you now felt exactly the way you had looked at Wyatt when you first met him. Mesmerized.
"Beautiful, (Y/n)." Ron shakes his head, "You look beautiful."
"Thank you." You smile.
The dance was as crowded as last year but the music was better. They even served more food, which was an added bonus. You had danced to almost every song with Wyatt, and even had a dance battle with Kim and Ron, but opted for taking a rest and drinking some punch for a while. Wyatt and Kim had really knocked it off, which you were happy about. But the one happy face you were so wanting to see was nowhere to be found.
"Hey," Wyatt says as he walks over to you, "looking for something?"
"Yeah, Ron." You reply, "You haven't see him, have you?"
"Actually, he told me he was going to the bathroom a while back. I haven't seen him since, though."
"Right, thanks."
Wyatt pours himself some punch into a plastic cup and you tap your foot quickly as you keep looking around. He stares at you a moment as he sips from his cup.
"Actually," you speak, "I'm going to look for him."
Wyatt nods and takes the plastic cup from your hand, "I understand. I hope things are okay."
"Me too."
You start to walk away but then Wyatt calls out your name and you turn around to look at him.
"Yeah?" You say.
"Tell him how you feel. He's doubting himself." He says.
"What?"
"(Y/n), it's pretty obvious that you like him. He's been your best friend for a long time. I know the look when a guy thinks he doesn't stand a chance, and he's wearing it."
"I'm sorry." You find yourself saying.
"What for? I just danced with the most beautiful girl in school. I'm sorry that I'm not him."
You swear that in that moment, you did get your Aladdin scene because Wyatt just made you feel like the only girl worth looking at. In two big steps, you make your way toward Wyatt and wrap your arms around him in a hug. He almost immediately hugs you back, careful not to spill his drink.
"You're a great guy." You say.
"I try to be." He laughs.
With that, he gives you a nudge of encouragement and you make your way out of the school gym to see if you can find Ron wandering around the hallways. You pass the boys toilets on the first floor and then the second floor, but there's no one in sight except for some girls talking at their lockers or the janitor who honestly should be on a break.
It's when you step outside do you find your best friend. He's got his hands in his pockets and kicking a pebble on the ground as he talks to Rufus on his shoulder. You decide to make your way over to him slowly, just in case you manage to pick up any goss. And you absolutely did.
"He's amazing," Ron says, "why wouldn't she like him? You saw how she froze when they met. It was like she saw Josh Mankey."
Both Ron and Rufus shudder.
"And then she goes and looks so beautiful and I had to make a fool of myself. She's never going to see me as more than a friend. She's got Wyatt now. I'm the loser that doesn't even have a date."
"Oh, man. I totally forgot." You say.
Ron spins around so fast it must have felt like a carnival ride for poor Rufus. You raise your hands jokingly as you step closer to him.
"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you." You tell him.
"(Y/n), hey... uh, how much of that did you hear?" Ron asks, scratching the back of his neck.
"Enough to know that I was completely wrong about how you feel."
Rufus lets out a, "what?" noise as he tilts his head, which makes you chuckle.
"I'm so stupid. I thought you didn't like me as in, you know, more than friends because you wanted to take someone else to the dance. I thought I was the only one who felt that way. But I should've known better."
"You, um... you like me too?" Ron asks hopefully.
"Absolutely, Ron Stoppable. I'm completely head over heels for you."
The smile that breaks out on Ron's face makes you smile just as widely-- like yawn catching, you just caught some of Ron's happiness. You take a step closer to him and he immediately goes back to being a shaking mess. With a soft laugh, you take hold of his hand and comfortingly rub your thumb across his skin.
"I'm nervous too." You say.
Ron smiles again, a quick smile that almost brightens his eyes, and then you lean forward just as he does and the two of you end up bumping noises. With a chuckle from the both of you, Ron stands still as you move forward and you gently kiss him.
This is how last year's dance should have ended. And you're extremely glad it's how your new relationship with Ron begins.
