Hiccup x Reader

You always did everything with Hiccup. You two were always together, even if you were just friends. You would go running, swimming, dancing, and just hang out all the time. But you wanted to be more than friends.

Ever since he found Toothless and tamed him, everyone in Berk loved him. But that's not how it always was.

When he shot Toothless down no one believed him, except you. When Toothless chose not to kill him no one believed him, except you. When he taught him, when Toothless protected him, when they found the mother Dragon and the Nest, when Hiccup tried to explain to everybody that dragons are good no one believed him, except you.

You were always by his side and kept his secret for him. You told no one and whenever the two of you would run off you had to say that you were going for a swim or playing chasey in the forest.

Your mother always loved Hiccup but your father never saw the good in him, as he would always do something wrong in the village. But you always saw his true, pure self.

By keeping Hiccup's secret you had to lie to your parents, the people you loved the most. It hurt you, and when they found out it hurt them ten times worse. You felt guilty but you still helped Hiccup.

You were the one to encourage him to not give up when his father took an army of vikings to go attack the Nest. You had your eyes on him but he always had his eyes on someone else.

Astrid.

You understood why; she was pretty and brave and controlling, not to mention skilled. You on the other hand were a little slack and shy and smart, and you never thought you were pretty. Only your mother does.

But who looks for brains in women anyway? You fell in love with Hiccup because he was such a cute clutz, he was smart and he saw the world differently. He told things as he saw them. He was the brave one.

When you helped Hiccup gain the trust of everyone left at Berk and helped them fly on dragons to the Nest, he was always around Astrid.

She was much nicer towards him now. She would comfort him when he was about to lose it, and she brought his spirits up... exactly like what you've done for him since the start.

In some way you believe that Hiccup doesn't actually see you; that you're invisible or perhaps you're his guardian angel sent to help him. Sometimes you believe your a ghost or his conscience which gets chucked aside whenever Astrid is in view.

But he liked her, and as a good friend you weren't going to get in between them two.

Before long Hiccup had destroyed the mother dragon and the Nest, returned home a hero, and got the girl of his dreams; Astrid.

You remember running up to him to give him a big hug for being so brave but before you could reach him he was already hugging Astrid. When they kissed you had to leave immediately; you couldn't stand there watching them as your heart was being broken.

You were so heartbroken that you decided to give you and Hiccup some space. He already was spending more time with Astrid and you were always helping out around the village.

You didn't just disappeared from his life, though. Some days you would visit him to say hi or help him with his new metal leg, or you would look after Toothless when he would go out with Astrid.

But slowly those small moments with Hiccup diminished until you barely saw him at all.

Everyone grew up. Stoick was growing grey hairs, Tuffnut was beginning to hit on you, you had to look after your dad when he got sick and eventually had to help your mum when he passed away.

But the change that hurt the most was Hiccup. He was ready to become the chief of Berk and had asked for Astrid's hand in marriage, which she accepted. When he would walk around the village you would wave to him but he never saw you. It was like he had forgotten you.

That was until he showed up at your doorstep one day. He came in crying and could barely speak. When he finally calmed down he told you everything.

He had been captured by a man in a mask who turned out to be his mother who he thought was dead, and she was caring for thousands of dragons, as well as an Alpha. Then his mother and Stoick were reunited but then a man called Drago attacked and his father suffered when Drago took control over Toothless, and killed him.

He was broken down. He was shaking and crying and looked like if he could just fall to the ground he would. You helped him of course. Even though he completely ignored you since he proposed to Astrid, you had to help him.

He stayed at your place that night and in the morning he was sitting by the fire talking to himself. He planned on getting revenge on Drago, but you told him that it was best not to attack a man only on hatred.

Instead you told him to rest a few more days then attack. With some convincing he finally agreed. His next words broke you; he called you a good friend.

That's all you'll ever be to him.

That day you helped set up a funeral for Stoick. Unlike Hiccup, Stoick actually took the time to talk to you. He would help you with things around the village and comforted you when your father passed.

Eventually you and him became great friends, and whenever you saw him you would greet him with some viking joke. He always told you how fond he was of you and that it was a shame that you and Hiccup don't see each other anymore.

But what had happened in the past happened and you couldn't change it.

While preparing the funeral you instantly fell into tears, but you made sure that no one saw, especially Hiccup. He was in enough pain as it was, if he saw you crying he wouldn't have the strength to stay strong and would cry too.

You were doing him a favor... again.

At the funeral Hiccup and Astrid and the gang stood at the front. Even though Hiccup had come to you for comfort, you were still near the back with the rest of the vikings.

Once Hiccup shot his arrow the rest fired, and you found yourself shooting your arrow with shaky hands.

You were going to talk to Hiccup again but he was already in Astrid's arms, so you decided to leave and head back home with your mother.

That night you didn't sleep. You couldn't; you cried until the sun rose. You were sad that Stoick was dead, he was so nice to you and you really liked him since the two of you were like siblings, but you were also sad because you had been used.

Hiccup came to you for comfort and you helped him to be brave, yet now he has gone back to his regular self and is ignoring you again. Typical.

The next morning you stayed at home. You had just lost a friend and was being treated like a tissue; only being there if you need it then being chucked away. You had no intention of speaking to Hiccup.

Then again, he's just lost his father and it would be rude to step out of his life and make a fuss at such a time.

After getting dressed and cleaning up you went to open you door and someone was waiting for you on the other side.

Astrid stood there fiddling with some of her fur on her fur coat. Once you opened the door she looked straight up at you and smiled slightly.

"What do you want?" You asked.

You hadn't asked rude, you simply asked her calmly. You were never the one to make enemies, others made you the enemy.

"Can I come in?" she asked softly.

You nodded and stood aside allowing her room to step inside. When she entered your home you closed the door and turned to her giving her your full attention.

"I just... want to see how you're holding up." Astrid spoke.

"I'll be better soon," you begin, "I've been to funerals before. Stoick was like a dad to me but everything ends eventually."

You became teary but would not let the tears fall. Not in front of Astrid.

She nodded but then slowly looked up at you as if her next words would break you, and they almost did.

"I mean about you and Hiccup."

Just the mention of his name made you sad. His name had brought you happiness and wisdom but now it brought you sadness and discomfort.

"I know that he hasn't spoken to you for a while, and I'm really sorry about that bu-"

"Please just get to the point." You say, cutting Astrid off.

Usually Astrid would hurt anyone who cut her off but when she saw you on the verge of tears she knew this was a subject you'd rather not receive.

"I just think that it was unfair on your part and that... well I would like, well I'll be honored, if you would assist me and the gang to go face Drago." Astrid said.

At first you thought she was joking but you saw in her eyes that she was dead serious. Which meant she wasn't going to get no for an answer.

The two of you talked for a while more, mostly on the plan of attack and where to meet at what time, but then afterwards the two of you gradually talked about personal things like what you do during the day, or how you like your fish, or what you plan to do in the future.

It was hard to admit but Astrid was pretty cool. After this one conversation you knew you could never go back; you two were going to be best friends.

So you trained with her the days before the departure to defeat Drago. You were stronger than you thought and Astrid taught you hard, so in a few days you became friends with war.

Once you and Astrid met up with the gang some of them laughed, but Astrid "kindly" reminded them that once they barely had the skill to defeat such a powerful man. She especially had a go at Snotlout as he was snickering, so she aggressively told him that once he was a weakling not able to fly a dragon or wage war on an army.

Soon they accepted you to join them, but most of them didn't want you with them. Except, of course, Tuffnut. He was always near you and trying to show off for you, which ended in horrible disaster.

When Hiccup saw you he froze. It was like he had saw a ghost. Astrid calmed him and asked him what was wrong but he shook the feeling aside and replied saying;

"It's nothing."

Flying over to Drago was hard considering you were all flying baby dragons. You had flown Toothless a couple of times. Twice with Hiccup and three times without him. In some way it was nicer without Hiccup, but you felt bad believing so.

Fighting Drago and his army was hard. You definitely had some battle scars. It became harder when he captured the gang, but you and Astrid fought him off with words, and at one point scared him.

Hiccup of course came to save the day so you fought with vigor. You were trained with the sword well so it was easy to fight, but difficult against other trained swordsmen.

At one point you were trapped but Hiccup rescued you by picking you up and carrying you to a safer part of the location with his dragon. You thanked him and he left immediately to face Drago.

He used soothing words and got Toothless back and then he allowed Toothless to take the lead and fight back; eventually defeating the Alpha and Drago as well.

Once again you were going to run up to Hiccup in victory but he was not in your arms, he was in Astrid's. You couldn't just leave so you had to put up with it until you returned home to Berk.

Once home you cared for most of the dragons and helped out with the rebuilding in the village. It all felt like the first time Hiccup became a hero, but the difference this time was that he became chief.

You were happy for him but you didn't have the strength to speak to him; it would hurt too much.

The gang helped with the village as well and they all grew fond of you when they told you how brave you fought. They helped you around the village and you all became close friends.

Astrid and you spoke more and as time passed you thought you two were sisters. Hiccup spoke to you more seeing as you saw him everyday now with the gang, but he wasn't as warm as he used to be.

He wasn't mean to you or anything, he just felt distant. In some ways you felt even more sad speaking to Hiccup like this than not speaking to him at all. It was painful.

One night Hiccup and Astrid invited you and the gang to join them for dinner at their place. They had moved in together once Hiccup had become chief.

At first you wanted to decline but thought that this opportunity doesn't come easily so you accepted and met at their house at the time they had mentioned.

Dinner was delicious and conversation was pleasant. All was good... until a certain topic was brought up. Stoick.

Everyone decided to have a moment silence for the memory of such a great man. Once the minute was over everyone was sad and Hiccup kept talking about his father.

"He was a good man." You spoke.

You don't know what you said that triggered Hiccup so harshly but his face became red and he shouted at you.

"How would you know? You never took the time to know him!" Hiccup bursted.

"Hiccup!" Astrid spoke at him.

"No it's ok Astrid," you begin, "it's true... except for the fact that I spent most of my days with him!"

Hiccup shouting at you made you shout at him. For the moment it felt good to yell. For the moment.

"Lier!" Hiccup stood up.

"I'm not lying!" You say standing up as well.

"When would my father have spoken to you?"

"What's that supposed to mean?!"

"It means why would my father talk to such a slack, emotional, talking fish bone?!"

"Hiccup!" Astrid yelled with rage.

Suddenly it all became quiet. There was a constant ringing in your ears and you tried so desperately to fight the tears that wanted to fall.

"Look I wouldn't expect you to know anything about real loss anyway." Hiccup said almost in disgust.

You looked up at him and let the tears fall, you didn't care anymore. You picked up your coat and walked out of the house.

"How could you say that?" Astrid spoke.

"Say what?" Hiccup grunted.

"(Y/N) lost her father in death. You can't say she doesn't know real loss when she's been through more than you."

"We've both lost our fathers, how has she been through more than me?"

"Because along the way she lost a friend as well. You."

Hiccup became silent.

Outside it was raining so you put your coat on to stop the cold attaching to your skin. Suddenly the door behind you opened and Hiccup ran out.

"(Y/N)!" he shouted running towards you.

You wanted to keep walking but you felt a pang in your chest everytime he yelled your name. When he stopped himself in front of you, you too stopped.

"What?" You say with tears streaming down your face.

"Look, (Y/N), I'm sorry. I really am."

"No you're not! If you were really sorry you wouldn't have ignored me all these years!"

"But I am sorry! I just... I got caught up finally being with Astrid and then my father was expecting so much of me, and Toothless needed more training and care, and the village constantly needed upgrades I just didn't have the time to speak to you."

"And what about those times when I saw you at the markets? Or flying to new islands with Toothless? What about when you walk past my house every day because that's the way for you to get home?"

Hiccup looked dead. He looked like he wanted to speak but he couldn't.

"Not once did you think about me? About how good of friends we used to be? Hiccup, I bloody loved you!"

Once the last words left your mouth you cursed yourself. How could you say that in front of him? He probably thinks you're pathetic!

"Loved?" he asks quietly.

You didn't dare say another word. You instead looked past Hiccup and walked away, but before you left you heard him say;

"I always loved you."
