Chapter 2: Introduction and Introspections
At last, the day comes and Rita arrives. She is wearing a pink dress, a Mennonite head covering, and pink and purple shoes. Dorcas observes that her dress is too short, and that her shoes are ones Dorcas would not be allowed to wear. I honestly made it this far in life before realizing shoes can be considered inappropriate.
Overwhelmed by the trip and the new family, Rita goes upstairs to rest, and Dorcas observes how she didn't ask permission to rest beforehand. She wonders how her parents will handle Rita, and pauses to pray for their guidance.
Rita comes to dinner with tangled hair, and the family exchanges disapproving glances until she gets the message and brushes it.
Rita finally sees Philip, who is her age, and teases her cousin that he "grew up and got good-looking." The family is stunned, and Philip looks humiliated. Dorcas, via her third-person narration, thinks how girls are supposed to remain sober and keep their eyes downcast around boys and men. She wonders why her father doesn't remind Rita of this, though he does become stern and guide her towards the table.
After eating, they sing and do devotions. Rita happily joins in. Then they take a family walk. The parents discuss chores, and while Rita is nodding, Dorcas sees a reluctant look on her face. Dorcas feels pain in her heart and thinks Dear Lord, please help them regarding her parents.
Rita remarks that Luke can do a lot of work for a little kid, and Mother corrects her and says, "Child." Like okay, what the heck.
When they get back, the two little girls race upstairs, laughing. The parents make them come back and go upstairs again like "young ladies."
Rita unpacks her things, including worldly cassette tapes. Dorcas almost has a panic attack and decides she'll have to tell her parents.
As she climbs into bed, Dorcas feels her heart go out to Rita and she prays that she'll grow full of "womanly grace."
