One More Mission
I stand on a rooftop, waiting. Fury has being using me to clean up his messes and when I refuse, he threatens to kill Mom and Dad. He trusts me enough to send me alone on an elimination mission against my aunt. Fatal mistake on his part. I take out the earpiece and smash it under my boot.
I sit on the roof before hearing a strong voice coming from the SHIELD base. I focus in. I can hear Dad, pleading for Mom's life.
"Fury, please! Nick! Something might've happened! She might've been captured by the DEO, or Cadmus might have made a comeback, or something else! Just let her live, I beg of you." He pleads.
"She has a day to return before your wife's heart stops beating. Tick tock, Mon El, tick tock." Fury replies.
"Hands behind your head and get on the ground. You're coming with us, ma'am." Someone says behind me. I do as they say, and I feel a woman's hand on my shoulder. She's not trying to push down on my bone. She's being gentle.
"I'm sorry about this, Cassidy." She says, pulling me up. She takes my gun and knife. She leads me down to a white van. I sit down as she closes the door. "Why are you doing this? You're a kindhearted person, so why kill for Fury?"
"If I don't, Mom dies. I have no other way. What do you think happened to Karlie Martin, or Mary Jameson. What about Aria Nightshade? Olivia Young?" I start crying. "I never pulled the trigger. I just hide the victim and help them get away. Fury never wanted proof of death."
"Let's get you home." She says. I fall asleep halfway through the drive.
I get up and walk slip into her kitchen for some water. I am so dehydrated from my 24 hour nap. Now I'm ready to kick Fury to China. Quietly, I fill the cup with water and grab a bag of chips.
As I close the refrigerator door, I hear soft footsteps behind me. They must just be my imagination. Alex's phone rings as I walk to the couch. I pick up.
"Hello, How may I help you?" I answer.
"Just stay on the phone, sweetheart, that's how you can help me." A man with a Russian accent says. "I am from an organization called SHIELD, and we have heard stories of your family. I want you to tell me where you a-"
"Not happening. Bye!" I hang up as Alex calls my phone. "Alex? What's wrong?"
"Get out of the apartment! Now! Cas, someone is in there with you. They're trying to drag you back to Fury." She says before hanging up. Someone opens the bathroom door. I run out the front door.
A man pulls into a doorway and cups his hand over my mouth. I try to pull away from him. He is crazy strong for a human. Like, superhuman strength. Unless it isn't superhuman, and it's just a perfect human. I don't want to hurt him. I don't want to hurt anybody. I try to escape his grasp, but it becomes tighter. I try to blast his hand with my heat vision. I miss.
He drops a red sunlight grenade. I close my eyes as it goes off. My heat vision isn't working. Or my strength. I struggle against him. It's around midnight. I have no way to get away or get any sunlight. Only the DEO and SHIELD have access to those grenades.
I notice an 'A' on his shoulder. Great Rao, this can't be happening. I pull away even harder, crying. He pulls me back and shoves me against the other wall. He forces my head sideways and pulls out a small device. It makes a small puncture in my skin as blood spills into a test tube. I hear handcuffs lock around my wrists. I pull away and run. As soon as I reach the bottom floor, an entire unit of soldiers raise their guns to me.
"You have to help me! Someone attacked me upstairs in my aunt's apartment!" I explain before someone makes their way to me. She places a bandaid on the puncture wound.
"Director Danvers, she is not safe here." One of the soldiers says. I start picking the lock on the handcuffs.
"I know, Johnson." She says. She notices the marks on my wrist. "She's my niece, and someone just attacked the apartment, with her in it."
I follow her to her car and get in. She wiped the blood off my neck and looks at the wrist mark. I buckle my seatbelt as she does the same and drives off.
"Who attacked?" She asks, keeping her eyes on the road. "I want a description and possible age."
"He was tall, very muscular, male, and he had an Avengers symbol on his shoulder." I think about him a little more. "He looked like he was in his early 50's."
"So it was Cap?" She asks. I nod. "I'm getting the feeling he's being a double agent. He's helping you and Fury."
"I know it's crazy, but I could've sworn it was him. It was just like him, down to the age." I pause. "What if it wasn't him? What if it was Bucky or another soldier like them?"
"Bucky has been on missions all week, and there is nobody else with their abilities." She replies. I look out the window as she pulls into a parking garage and opens a breach. She pushes me through as it closes. I wake up in a medbay with multiple people looking over me.
"We tried to sedate her, but the needle bent. Just like Kara's skin. Ava, she could be Kara's daughter. Remember her?" She notices my eyes opening. "I should've known. Hey, sleepyhead."
"Welcome back to the real world, princess." Zari says. I get up and my head starts hurting. Flashes of images go too fast to understand. I black out.
Sirens are in the distance. Smoke is coming from the hood of the car. Mom and Dad are coughing. Someone hit and run. Three black cars surround our own. A man on a motorcycle stops.
"Kara!" He shouts. I can barely get up.
The month on the calendar app is February 2021. "I'm okay. We all are."
"Kara," Dad says, pointing at me, "look at Cassidy."
A sharp piece of lead was thrown through the broken window. It bent on my skin. "That's lead. It was obviously aimed at Mon El, but it hit Cassidy."
"It bent." The man finishes. "Get out of the car. All of you need to come with me."
"Fury will never let us near her if we let him know." Mom says. "I'm sorry, Cap. We can't go with you."
"We aren't going to Fury. You three are living in a tiny studio apartment, and I'm giving you an opportunity to move." He says. "Tony and I have been discussing this with Clint and Nat. I think you'll be okay."
"What if we say no?" Dad asks. "Will Fury just stalk us like he did with Clark and Lois?"
"This is off the books. Officially, you two are on a sabbatical and James has already said it's okay." He says. "Do it for your daughter. You can leave at any time."
"We'll do it, just help get Cassie out of the carseat." Mom pushes the door open and stumbles out of the car. The man reaches through the window and pulls me out. He hands me to Mom.
"Cassidy Evelyn Matthews. What a beautiful name." Someone says. I open my eyes as they finish the last word.
I'm still on the Waverider. I'm not in the medbay. I'm with Sara. She looks like Mom. She holds my hands from across the table. "I cannot believe how much you look like Kara."
"I get that a lot." I reply. "How long was I out?"
"Hard to tell, being in the Temporal Zone and all. The breach spit you out right outside the ship as we were boarding. You were going on and on about how someone named Fury was trying to kill Kara. We finally got you to stop when we knocked you out."
"How'd you do that?" I ask.
"Nate threw a few punches at your head." Sara says. "Anyway, Rory had the idiotic idea to use the flasher when you were knocked out, so you had no idea what happened between falling through the breach and getting knocked out."
"And you said no, but he did it anyway." I finish. She nods. "I saw something that I've buried for years."
"We're going to have to let Cisco deal with that." She says as the Waverider arrives in a beautiful city. Central City.
I walk off the ship, waving bye to the Legends. I ignore what Sara said about having Cisco vibe me to that memory. Nora pulls me behind her. "I have to show you this. It's crazy."
Cisco and Caitlin watch her as she pulls me to her own little lab. Once we're in there, she starts typing in a command on her laptop. "I thought the ability for breachers to go past our Earth was impossible, but then I considered that maybe they came here before going there."
"And?"
"They did. I looked for any undocumented people in the facial recognition software, and I found some. Meet the Avengers from Earth 199999." She says as she pulls up the security footage. A breach closing with the Avengers I faced, and then another one opening. Then, they're gone. "I believe they created the technology to open breaches across the multiverse, hence your mother's Earth 38 doppelgänger seeing them, too. Oh right, I never mentioned that. They were there, too. They obviously came before, but in a place with little to no security cameras."
I close the laptop and smile. She's really good with computers and tech, while I can barely type using home row when I'm working. Barry walks in and I snap out of my thoughts.
"We have one more mission: We're saving Kara and Mon El." Barry says before suiting up. I follow close behind him. "Cisco had a feeling you might not have your suit, so he worked with Caitlin to make one."
I walk through the breach a few minutes later, entering the SHIELD facility. The power is out. The guards are knocked out. Mom and Dad are trapped in a cell at the end of the hall. I kick the door down to see an empty cell. I notice a moved tile in the floor. I lift it up to see Mom and Dad, hiding under the floor. No, not hiding. They aren't hiding. Escaping. That's what they're doing. I watch them disappear, not knowing that I'm here.
"Mom?" I ask. They don't hear me. I'm too far up. I sit on the ledge until Barry and Nora walk behind me. "They have no idea I was here."
"Sometimes the world doesn't want us to move forward in a certain way like that. Sometimes it has its way of saying it wants you on a different path." Barry says. "I contacted Alex. She says she's willing to take care of you."
